GOOD AFTERNOON: It has been a nice late Fall day across Alabama on this
Saturday. Good weather to do that last minute Christmas shopping. Skies
were mostly clear across the area, and the anticipated cloudiness has not
shown up yet. Satellite photos reveal a band of clouds over southern
Illinois, Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. This cloudiness is affiliated
with a surface trough that is swinging our way. Temperatures behind the
trough are not dramatically colder, but as you look further upstream, you
find the Arctic air over the Upper Midwest. At noon, International Falls,
MN was reporting 0F with a wind chill of -20F. This air will be sweeping
south behind a strong cold front that will reach Alabama tonight. Skies
should become cloudy, and the front could squeeze out a few sprinkles of
rain late tonight.
SUNDAY WEATHER: Tomorrow will be a good day to stay indoors.
Northwesterly winds will be quite strong, averaging 15-25 mph. There could
be a few snow flurries from time to time, but they will only add emphasis to
the miserable conditions, and should not cause any travel problems.
Temperatures will struggle to rise into the upper 30s before giving up the
ghost and falling back during the afternoon hours. Sunday night promises to
be the coldest night so far this season, with readings falling into the 15
degree range across much of the area. The coldest 2004 reading is 15F on
January 7th of this year. If the temperature falls to 13F, it will be the
coldest since January 29, 2003 in Birmingham. Needless to say, precautions
should be taken Sunday night to protect life and property from the potential
hard freeze.
MID WEEK STORM SYSTEM: Winds will quickly shift back to the south on
Monday, allowing a little moderation in temperature. Readings will likely
stay above freezing Tuesday morning. Moisture levels will also be on the
increase on a strong southwesterly flow and showers will break out Tuesday
afternoon. A low will form over East Texas and head eastward, spreading
some heavy rains into Alabama, along with storms over the southern part of
the state. The precipitation from this event should be liquid, not frozen.
Winds will shift back to the northwest, ushering more cold air into Alabama
by Wednesday night.
CHRISTMAS SYSTEM: Cold air will be in place over the South as a low pressure
system forms in the western Gulf on Christmas Eve. This system will move
ENE across the Gulf to a point south of Pensacola Friday morning. On this
track, it will spread precipitation across a large part of Alabama. If the
cold air is deep enough and there is enough moisture, residents over North
Alabama might awaken to more than presents Christmas morning.
ON THIS DATE IN 1932: The first playoff game in NFL history, which pitted
the Chicago Bears against the Portsmouth Spartans, had to be moved indoors
into Chicago Stadium because of bitterly cold temperatures and heavy snow in
the Windy City. The playing field had to be shortened to eighty yards to
fit in the stadium. The edge of the field ran right up to the walls of the
stadium floor. It looked more like today's arena football than the NFL to
which we are accustomed today.
