GOOD AFTERNOON: Well, we have been talking about the coming cold air for
two weeks now, and it seems all of those predictions are coming true. We
will experience the coldest air since last winter this week as some Arctic
air spills into the Deep South. Preparations should be made for hard
freezes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. It will not be a surprise to
see reports of lows in the teens, especially Tuesday night.

TONIGHT'S WEATHER: Another cold front is racing toward Alabama this
afternoon. It will push through the area during the early morning hours.
It is a dry front, so it will be accompanied only by a few hours of
cloudiness and a tiny chance of a little light rain during the overnight.
Winds will shift around to the northwest overnight and readings will fall
into the upper 30s.

MONDAY WEATHER: Monday will feature a breezy northwest wind that will be
ushering in colder air. Those winds will average 10-20 mph with occasional
higher guests. Skies will be mostly sunny, but temperatures will struggle
to rise through the 40s.

HARD FREEZES AHEAD: Latest indications are that temperatures will fall into
the lower 20s across a wide area of North Alabama Monday night.
Temperatures will be at 25 or below for several hours, resulting in a hard
freeze. These conditions will be repeated Tuesday night and again on
Wednesday night. Readings on Tuesday night will even be a degree or two
colder than Monday night. There will likely be a few minimums in the
teens.

PRECAUTIONS: With several nights of freezing temperatures and at least
three nights with hard freeze conditions, homeowners and industries should
take steps to protect life and property. Tender plants and vegetation
should be protected. Antifreeze levels should be checked. Steps should be
taken to prevent exposed pipes from freezing. Remember to make sure that
pets have proper shelter and adequate unfrozen water supplies. Make sure
you and others have sufficient heat.

BEYOND MIDWEEK: Skies should remain sunny through midweek. Some clouds
will return to the area by Thursday, but skies by then should still be just
partly cloudy. Those partly cloudy skies will continue on Friday in wake of
another cold front. There are indications that our main model, the GFS may
be out to lunch by the weekend. It indicated a less amplified pattern by
the weekend, which is not borne out by some of the other models. They tend
to keep a stronger trough over the Deep South. This would mean colder
conditions than my earlier packages indicated. In fact, one front should
push through unimpeded Thursday night, followed by another one next Sunday.
This will maintain our cold regime.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: The New England Patriots defeated the Miami Dolphins
in driving snow at Foxboro MA. With snow covering the field and New England
in position to kick a game winning field goal, New England Head Coach Ron
Meyer ordered a path cleared for the field goal attempt. The move was
against the rules, but no one stopped him. Place kicker John Smith made the
kick and the Patriots won the game 3-0.
