...Fear The Wedge...

Several times a year, Alabama is visited by an interesting weather
phenomenon known as the "easterly wedge," or more affectionately, as
"the wedge." If you had a big brother growing up, you probably were
treated to an occasional "wedgie." You know what I am talking about.
Well, the easterly wedge is sort of a wedgie for weather people. It
causes a pain in the temperature forecast department, as we will see
tomorrow here in Alabama.

SHOWERS AND STORMS: On the weather maps this morning, we
see a stationary front lying along I-59 through Alabama. Winds had
shifted around to the north over the Tennessee Valley and temperatures
were some 7-10 degrees cooler than further to south. At 7 a.m., it was
42F in Crossville, TN and a more springlike 58F in Birmingham.
Showers were mainly north of the front. But looking to the west, we
see a fairly potent upper level system that has just departed the
Dallas area. It was producing showers and storms over eastern Texas,
Arkansas and Louisiana. As it moves eastward, warm air will spread
northward ahead of it, driving the front back toward Tennessee. With
a warm, moist airmass in place, shower and thunderstorms will develop
across Alabama this afternoon and this evening. Rainfall amounts will
be around a third of an inch. Severe weather is not expected,
although you can't rule out an isolated event and warning. Hail will
be the main feature.

THE WEDGE: The wedge occurs when high pressure over the
mid-Atlantic states rounds the top of the Appalachian Mountains and
spills down the front side of that range. This cooler, more dense air
flows through the Carolinas and turned westward across Georgia,
running into eastern Alabama. It means cooler temperatures and often
persistent cloudiness. We will see quite a temperature range on
Sunday, with readings near 50F in Atlanta, 60F in Anniston and 70F in
Tuscaloosa!

THE WEEK AHEAD: Look for springlike conditions Monday,
storms on Tuesday, fine conditions on Wednesday and Thursday, with
more storms on Friday.

FLOODING RAINS: Flooding woes continue over the Ozarks
into the mid-Mississippi Valley, where rivers continue to run in major
flood stage. I was amazed at the high waters around Memphis,
Tennessee as I flew into there on Friday. And more flooding rains are
on the way. Widespread two inch amounts are expected over the next
five days with local amounts in excess of six inches from Arkansas
across much of Missouri into western Kentucky, much of Illinois and
western Indiana.

TORNADOES ON SUNDAY: Tornadoes will be a big problem on
Sunday over parts of Texas and Oklahoma. Looks for some big, long
tracked twisters in this region.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: The head of the Turkemenstan
national weather service, Suhanberdi Bayramov, was fired by President
Saparmurat Niyazov for inaccurate forecasts. In an address to his
cabinet, the President berated the meteorologist for recent forecasts
that called for heat and rain that did not happen. Sounding a lot
like Donald Trump on The Apprentice, Niyazov told the chief weather
forecaster during a cabinet meeting broadcast on television that he
"was fired."

...Showers and Storms Today...

As we get ready to close the books on the month of March
2008 in Birmingham, we find that it has been a dry and slightly warmer
than average month. Temperatures through the first 28 days of the
month have been running a little more than one degree above average.
Rainfall is down around two and one-quarter inches. Our rainfall
deficit for the year will soon be pushing three inches and the
prospects for rain look slim after the next week or so. We will see a
couple of rain chances during the next week, including today.

TODAY: A weak cool front lies just to the north of
Alabama today. The airmass over Alabama is slightly unstable, and
this will set the stage for scattered showers and storms across the
area. A passing upper level disturbance will help enhance those rain
chances, but don't look for anything heavy. Rainfall amounts will
average around one third of an inch. Storms should not be especially
strong either.

SUNDAY: The famed easterly wedge will push into Alabama
from Georgia late tonight and tomorrow. The main effect will be a
temperature gradient from near 60 in the eastern counties to near 70
over western sections of the state tomorrow afternoon. A few showers
and storms will be possible, but rain chances will be less than today.

SEVERE WEATHER SUNDAY: The chance is there for a
significant severe weather episode on Sunday over parts of Okalhoma
and Texas, spreading into Arkansas and Missouri.
Tornadoes will be a threat.

MONDAY: Monday looks like it will be mild and spring
like with temperatures in the 70s under partly sunny skies. There
could be a shower, but it doesn't look very likely.

TUESDAY SYSTEM: By Tuesday morning, low pressure will be
passing through the Great Lakes region with a trailing cold front
approaching Alabama from the northwest. Recent model runs have
trended weaker with this system, but it does look like it will have
enough oomph to produce a round of showers and storms across the area
Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening. Nothing to make us
apprehensive about severe weather, as the dynamics will stay well to
the north of Alabama.

REST OF THE WEEK: By Thursday evening, low pressure will
be near Little Rock. This low will take a more easterly track across
Tennessee. As it does, it will spread a weakening band of rain and
storms down into Alabama on Friday. The best rain chances will be
over the Tennessee Valley.

ON THIS DATE IN 1848: Niagara Falls eased to a trickle
during the late afternoon, then was "silent" for 30 hours. This is the
only time in recorded history that both falls stopped flowing. An ice
jam at the neck of Lake Erie and the Niagara River entrance between
Fort Erie, Ontario, and Buffalo, New York, was caused by wind, waves,
and lake currents. Most noticeably absent was the roaring sound of
the absent falls. People even ventured into the Gorge, discovering
relics like weapons from War of 1812.

GOOD CHANCE OF SHOWERS TOMORROW: There is a cold front lurking NW of
Alabama. We think that after it crosses past the Tennessee River that
it will slow down and stall in the vicinity of Birmingham during the
day Saturday. Indeed, by late Saturday, it may have done a U-turn and
started back north. It is for that reason and other reasons that we
believe you will not need a heavy coat any time soon. We are
projecting temperatures above the 70-degree mark almost every day
through the end of next week. Nights will be fairly comfortable.

That front that we are talking about will increase our chance of
showers tomorrow. In fact, we can have some tonight. There could also
be a thunderstorm thrown in, but it does not look like a severe
weather situation. Also, do not look for a reservoir-filling rain
event. We will be lucky to get a half-inch through tomorrow. Our next
main rain event will be about Tuesday of next week. That could be a 1-
inch producer. A cold front is expected to move through Alabama next
Tuesday. That could cause our high temperatures to back off to the 60s
by next Wednesday.

A PROWL IN THE COUNTRYSIDE: I hope you do not mind these daily trips
to other parts of the country and even to other parts of the world. I
am extremely fascinated by geography. I would really have enjoyed
travelling the world with the famous CBS guy, Lowell Thomas, or being
a staff photographer for National Geographic Magazine. Matt Marshall,
our daily reader and contact in Layton, Utah, says that part of his
work area is on the mountains facing south across the Bear River
Valley. He said the visibility was so tremendous a few days ago that
he thought he detected the slight curvature of the earth with the
naked eye…too bad that the wrong places are going to get a lot more
rain. Louisville has already received 8.69 inches in March, more than
double their legal amount, and 15.74 inches. For the year already,
they have received 16.64 inches, a one-half foot surplus…Cincinnati
has been drenched with 9 inches in the last 4 weeks and almost 17
inches for the year…17 below zero in Stanley, Idaho this morning
nestled in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountains…there are tiny slices
of life that you always remember and one of mine was the first time I
drove in to Stanley, the population and speed limit were both 35…24
below zero was the coldest in Alaska at Nuiqsut…and Whittier still has
64 inches of snow on the ground—the most at any regular Alaska
reporting station, except the mountains.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little pal, Little Miss Molly, is so
attached to me that when I neglect her for a day or two at a time, she
sticks to me likc glue. Yesterday and today I could not go into any
part of the house without her shadow right behind me. When I took my
shower this morning, she followed me into the master bedroom, hopped
up on the king-sized bed and would not leave until I came out. I
wonder what her thoughts are. Does she think she is losing me as one
of her best friends or that I do not want to play with her anymore?
Tomorrow she will forget all of that, because I am going to play with
her so much she will beg for mercy. Sure enjoyed hearing James Spann
give a great speech today to the Center Point Fire Department at the
Clay Community Center. Inspired me no end. It was not all about
weather. Instead it was a great challenge to live your life like you
should and be willing to help others. Life goes on.....

..A Few Showers Tonight And Tomorrow...

MOISTURE LEVELS INCREASING: We still believe the day today will be
generally dry across Alabama; any showers should be confined to the
far northern part of the state, near the Tennessee state line.
Otherwise, the weather will remain mild and breezy with a mixture of
clouds and sunshine. Most communities will rise well into the 70s
again today, with a high somewhere between 74 and 78.

SHOWERS RETURN: A weakening cold front will a chance of showers to
Alabama tonight and tomorrow. The front will stall out somewhere
around Birmingham tomorrow, and then slowly dissipate as it moves
northward tomorrow night and Sunday. This is not expected to be a big
rain event; most spots will receive well under one-half inch of rain,
and no severe weather is expected. A few thunderstorms could be
involved, but with the upper air support pulling away, they should
remain well under severe limits. Away from the showers, we might see a
few intervals of sunshine tomorrow, pushing temperatures into the low
70s.

SUNDAY: At this point the chance of rain on Sunday looks small,
although a few rogue showers might pop up in isolated spots. There
will be some clouds around, and cold air damming (CAD) will set up
along the eastern slopes of the Appalachian mountains. This "wedge"
effect will push cooler air into Alabama from the east, and most
likely we will see quite a range of daytime temperatures. The high
Sunday should be in the low 70s near the Mississippi border, but close
to 60 near the Georgia border in that wedge.

NEXT WEEK: We are still looking at two potential rain events next
week; one Tuesday (April 1), and another one at the end of the week on
Friday (April 4). Unfortunately, the computer models have trended
weaker with both systems, but we have to remember that historically
some pretty robust weather systems have blown through Alabama during
the first week of April. Hopefully one, or both will bring some decent
rain to Alabama.

ANOTHER TORNADO ANNIVERSARY: Today is another Palm Sunday tornado
outbreak anniversary; this one came on March 28, 1920. Thirty-eight
significant tornadoes hit the Midwest and Deep South states. The
outbreak left over 380+ dead, 1,215 injured. Many communities and
farmers alike, were caught off-guard, as the storms moved to the
northeast at speeds that exceeded 60 mph in some cases. Most of the
fatalities occurred in Georgia (201+), Indiana (56), and Ohio (55),
while the other states had lesser amounts. According to Thomas P.
Grazulis, head of the Tornado Project, the death tolls in the southern
states on Palm Sunday 1920, could have easily been much higher, since
the deaths of non-whites were omitted as a matter of official state
protocol, even when it came to fatalities from natural disasters.
However, U.S. Weather Bureau would change this in the 1950s, when all
deaths, regardless of race, that was attributed to severe weather were
recorded by federal government policy in every state.

SHOWERS ENTERING THE PICTURE: The forecast for the next two or three
days is not an easy one, but we invite you to check the day-by-day
forecast for the details. The reason it is not easy is that a cold
front is expected to push down into North Alabama and it is difficult
to say where it will eventually stop and head back north. It probably
will not even reach Birmingham. We think it will be in the vicinity of
Cullman at some point later Saturday. That will still give Central
Alabama the best chance of getting some scattered showers and
thunderstorms Saturday, especially during the afternoon, but we will
see some widely scattered ones Friday afternoon and Friday night. We
may have a few lingering showers on Sunday, but Monday looks dry. As
slightly cooler air pushes in from the east, our high on Sunday should
back off to the upper 60s, otherwise look for low to mid 70s. Beyond
the weekend, it looks like a much better chance for showers and
thunderstorms about next Tuesday.

TRAGIC DAY IN OUR PAST: On this day in 1994 on a Palm Sunday, 42
people died and 320 were injured in an outbreak of tornadoes in the
Southeast. This included 26 tornadoes in Alabama, Georgia and the
Carolinas. The main tragedy in Alabama was the Goshen United Methodist
Church when a tornado struck during the morning worship and 20 people
died in the church including the daughter of the pastor.

THE DROUGHT STORY: For the first time in quite a while, there is no
longer a D4 drought category (Exceptional Drought) in Alabama, but 78%
of the state is still under a drought designation, including 33%
described as Extreme Drought. Chris Howard, with the Alabama
Department of Environmental Management in Montgomery, sent us a 15-
year study of Montgomery rain amounts. This covered 1993 through 2007
and only two of those years were wetter than normal. The total rain
deficit for that 15 years was 112.80 inches—over 9 feet of lost rain.
That is almost a two-year supply.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: We are concerned about expected rain amounts
from NW Louisiana and Arkansas up the Ohio Valley of 3 to 4 inches in
the next 5 days…all of that has to go down the Ohio and Mississippi
Rivers…cold spots this morning, 6 below at Embarrass, Minnesota and 31
below at Nuiqsut, Alaska…wind chill 50 below over North Alaska…I would
have to wear a light coat…still blows my smaller than average mind
that if you overlayed Alaska on the lower 48, it would stretch all the
way from just south of San Francisco to Jacksonville, Florida…overall,
this past winter was the coolest for the lower 48 since 2001…the
Northeast had its fifth wettest winter on record.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A nice e-mail from Moundville yesterday
refreshing my memory that one year in the life of a dog is equal to 7
human years. That means my Little Miss Molly is about 38 years old.
Maybe that is why she slept until 10:30 this morning. However, I sure
cannot tell any difference in her energy level. She would put the
Energizer bunny to shame. Also, a note from Hoover about a gentleman
losing his closest friend, his dog. I will mention that later after I
get permission from him. Life goes on.......

..Showers Return By Saturday...

ARTICLE: Mild afternoons will headline our forecast today and tomorrow
as afternoon temperatures peak in the 73 to 78 degree range. While we
will be scattered clouds around from time to time, expect a decent
amount of sunshine, with a good breeze out of the southwest averaging
10 to 20 mph. Moisture levels will begin to increase tomorrow, and we
will introduce the chance of a shower tomorrow night, especially north
of Birmingham, as a cold front moves into the state from the north.

A FEW WEEKEND SHOWERS: That front will settle into North-Central
Alabama on Saturday, going stationary and ultimately dissipating with
little upper support. But, the presence of that front will mean a
chance of scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm Saturday and
Sunday. Once again, we don't expect any really heavy rain, no severe
weather, and no all day wash-out. Just keep in mind you will have to
dodge a few showers both days.

NEXT WEEK: It is beginning to look like we will have a shot at some
beneficial rain Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night as a fairly strong
short wave passes over Alabama. Looks like a setup for at least one-
half to one inch, and a few strong thunderstorms will be possible as
the air becomes rather unstable. Another rain event shows up at the
end of the week, but the latest medium range model guidance hints the
system early in the week could be the stronger of the two.

TIME TO PLANT? We are now past the average date of the last freeze,
March 23. However, we can have cold snaps deep into April, so there is
no way to guarantee that we have seen our last freeze. Having said
that, we see no chance of frost during the next seven days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes impacted the
Southeast U.S. on Palm Sunday. Forty-two people were killed in the
outbreak and 320 were injured. A total of 26 tornadoes ripped through
Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, causing $107
million in damage. The most significant tornado of the day first
touched down near Ragland, in St. Clair County. It moved northeast,
into Calhoun and southern Cherokee County, striking the Goshen United
Methodist Church during their morning worship service. A total of 20
people died in the church; most of them were participating in an
Easter drama that was going on at the time the tornado destroyed the
church building. The daughter of the church minister, four year old
Hannah Clem, was among those killed.

Perhaps the most tragic part of the story was that a tornado warning
was issued for southern Cherokee County at 11:27 a.m.; exactly 12
minutes before the building was destroyed at 11:39. But, those in the
church never heard the warning. A storm survey by Tim Marshall showed
that an interior hallway in the church could have provided adequate
shelter for all 150 occupants had they sought shelter there. Another
reminder of the importance of having a NOAA Weather Radio at every
church in Alabama.

NO FROST ANYTIME SOON: We got a delayed report that the low
yesterday morning at Grantley in NE Alabama was 15. That made it the
coldest spot in the state. Not nearly as cold this morning. A few lows
included 28 in Muscadine, 32 in Munford, 33 in Black Creek, Anniston
and Montgomery and 47 at Birmingham Airport.

NOW ABOUT THE FUTURE: Looks like an extended period of mild to warm
afternoons and pleasant nights. Starting tomorrow high temperatures
will be consistently in the 70s, possibly all the way through the
middle of next week.

Our rainfall deficit is creeping back upward. As of today, Birmingham
was showing a deficiency of 2.24 inches since January 1. Our total for
the year so far is 12.38, however, last year on this same date we had
only received 6.57 inches, so at least we are off to a better start.

Brisk SW winds will be bringing in some moisture over the next
several days. We think showers will hold off until Friday night.
Probably our best chance of getting some showers and thunderstorms
will be on Saturday. It does not look like a long drawn out
significant rain event this time. We believe that the bigger amounts
of rain will be over the north third of the state, especially the
Tennessee Valley. This is due to a cold front trying to work its way
southward. It may not get into Central Alabama until about Saturday or
Sunday.

AROUND THE WORLD: Much of Northern Brazil gets over 80 inches of
rain per year. Almost all of that drains into the Atlantic by way of
the amazing Amazon River and its tributaries…we are quite concerned
about another potential heavy rain event where it is definitely not
needed. From about Little Rock across the south half of Missouri and
up the Ohio River Valley projected amounts for the next five days
between 3 and 4 inches. Not good news at all…NWS/Salt Lake makes a
specific forecast every day for Mirror Lake nestled in the western
part of the Uinta Mountains. Yep, we have been there too. Their high
for tomorrow should only be 28 and low tomorrow night 4 with snow…Kim
Sexton will be glad to know that there is still 67 inches of snow on
the ground at Whittier, Alaska…sure enjoyed our conference call with
LeeAnn Allegretto at the NWS Caribou, Maine last night. We will try to
check often, but they have already received 186 inches of snow this
season—the most of all time…94 in Death Valley was the USA hot spot
yesterday…cold spots this morning 3 above at Land O Lakes, Wisconsin
and 38 below at good old Deadhorse, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have lived my entire life in this
state, seemingly before Columbus discovered America, but I have never
driven along County Road 18 branching off of Alabama Highway 9 between
Center Point and Piedmont. You follow CR18 to Gnatville and you can
get a good look at Weisner Mountain, elevation 1,894 feet to the west…
again, today, poor Little Miss Molly has been neglected by me. A trip
to St. Vincents East this morning followed by lunch and finishing the
weather work and I have to hit the road again this afternoon. Tomorrow
I will do double duty. I cannot describe how her disposition changes
when I go through the living area to get a cup of coffee and she
throws a ball at me, I put down my coffee cup and have a high
intensity game with her. It is absolutely the highlight of her life. I
suppose she will still want to be playing ball when she gets to be 15
years old, which is about equal to 80 years old for humatoids. Life
goes on and I hope it will be extra long with my little 9-pound
pal........

..Afternoons Turn Mild...

THE WARMING TREND CONTINUES: Another delightful early spring day is
ahead for Alabama, with ample sunshine and a high close to 70 degrees
for most communities. The warming trend continues through the rest of
the week, with mid 70s likely tomorrow and Friday. With a south to
southwest low level wind, moisture levels will slowly increase but we
will not mention any significant chance of rain through Friday with
just a few scattered clouds from time to time.

OUR WEEKEND: A weakening cold front will move into North Alabama
Saturday, and will bring the chance of a few showers and possibly a
thunderstorm, but with the lack of good dynamics, we won't expect any
heavy rain, severe weather, or an all day wash-out. Rain amounts on
Saturday will be generally a quarter-inch of less for most places, and
the sun should peak out from time to time. The front will wash out as
it moves northward Saturday night, and it looks like most of Sunday
will be dry with just the chance of a few isolated showers.

RAIN OPPORTUNITIES NEXT WEEK: We could use some good rain events since
the rain deficit for 2008 is now 2.24" in Birmingham. Looks like we
will have at least a chance at some beneficial rain on Tuesday of next
week, and then again on Thursday. At first glance it looks like the
second system (the one due in here around Thursday April 3) will offer
the best hope at rain amounts of over one inch. For now neither system
shows any sign of producing a significant severe weather threat, but
it is simply way too early to be specific. And, we must remember we
are getting into the core of our spring tornado season, so we will
have to watch any weather system that approaches our state this time
of the year.

LONG RANGE: At this point, we don't see any sign of any more freezing
weather for the next 7 to 10 days, but we caution you that freezing
temperatures have been recored in Birmingham as late as April 23.

DID YOU KNOW? At any given moment, there are 1,800 thunderstorms in
progress somewhere on the earth--amounting to an average of 16,000,000
storms and 25,000,000 lightning strikes each year. An average of 67
people per year are killed by lightning in the United States - a
higher death rate than tornadoes (65) or hurricanes (16), and those
are only the documented cases. Since 1959, Alabama ranks 12th in the
nation in lightning deaths (101 people).

MISSISSIPPI RIVER FLOODING: Flooding continues across the lower part
of the Mississippi River; in Baton Rouge, the river is forecast to
crest at 39 feet on Tuesday April 8, 4 feet above flood stage. At 36
feet, river traffic and industrial activity on the river side of the
levee will be curtailed. A foot higher and the river would lap at the
top of the lowest spots of the levee on the campus of Louisiana State
University.

A GOOD WARMING TREND: The old thermometer is in a recovery mode.
After a substantial freeze last night, especially for so late in the
season, a warming trend was already underway this afternoon as winds
shifted around to the south. They will continue out of the south or SW
into the weekend bringing us mild afternoons and comfortable nights.
Indeed, by tomorrow we expect the high to be near 70 followed by the
mid 70s Thursday through Saturday.

Naturally, when we have increasing southerly winds, we think of
moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. The atmosphere is still quite dry
today, but we believe a few showers and thunderstorms will be knocking
on the door Friday night and a better chance on Saturday. Does not
look like an all-day rain event on Saturday and amounts should not be
that heavy.

The dew point across Alabama this afternoon was still very low. The
entire state was under a Red Flag Warning from the National Weather
Service. This means that the danger of woods fires can be critical. It
does not take long for the underbrush and woodlands to dry out. That
Red Flag Warning will be relaxed after darkness arrives.

FROST AND FREEZE LAST NIGHT: There was quite a variation in low
temperatures across Alabama this morning. As we expected, the colder
temperatures were in the valleys and not so cold on the ridges.
Actually, in some of the valleys, it dropped several degrees lower
than we had anticipated. However, across Central Alabama including the
Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/Anniston corridor the forecast was very much on
track. Here is a sampling of the lows:

19 at Muscadine (they were below freezing about 12 hours)
21 Black Creek, Concord/Hueytown, Hamilton
22 Cottondale, Talladega, McCalla, Ashby
23 Mumford, Ft. Payne, Lincoln, Rainbow City, Vigo
24 Coker, Crossville, Centreville, Sylacauga
25 Pinson, Moody, Wadley, Cook Springs
26 Vinemont, Reese City, Alexander City, Jasper, Alabaster
28 Anniston, Tuscaloosa, Cullman, Evergreen
29 Huntsville, Montgomery
31 Birmingham Airport

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Probably the worst flooding at the moment from the
recent tremendous downpours is in Arkansas…the flood crest continues
roll down the Mississippi…cold spots this morning 20 below zero at
Presque Isle, Maine where the winter has been terrific and 29 below
zero at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska…we have a daily reader who loves to
hear about Whittier, Alaska where she has visited and said the scenery
was awesome…they have 68 inches of snow on the ground…in the Great
Smoky Mountain National Park, it was 7 above this morning with 3
inches of snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I know I have written about this
several times, but when I first met Little Miss Molly face to face,
total bonding took place in about 5 seconds. She is that kind of
little girl. I wish you could see the looks on the faces of most of
our neighbors when they are out walking and they see Molly
approaching. They break into a big smile and almost every one pauses,
rubs her head or even picks her up to give her a belly rub. By then,
her little tail is swishing like one of those cardboard funeral home
church fans. Molly cherishes every minute she spends with anybody. I
wonder if she is almost human. Life goes on......

..A Warming Trend Begins This Afternoon...

WARMER DAYS: Following a sub-freezing start, we expect the dry air in
place over Alabama to warm up nicely; we are forecasting a high in the
mid 60s with sunshine in full supply. And, while tonight will be
rather chilly, it will not be as cold as last night and temperatures
will generally remain above freezing.

The warming trend continues for the rest of the week; look for a high
around 70 tomorrow, followed by mid to upper 70s on Thursday and
Friday. Moisture levels will slowly increase late in the week, and a
few isolated showers could show up by Friday afternoon or Friday
night, but for now we didn't mention it in our formal forecast.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A weakening cold front will drop down into Alabama on
Saturday, and will bring the chance of showers and possibly a
thunderstorm in a few spots. However, the primary dynamics will pass
well to the north of Alabama, and with little upper support we don't
expect any really heavy rain. No severe weather is forecast, and the
day shouldn't be a total wash-out. That front will stall out somewhere
around I-20 Saturday night, and a few showers are possible Sunday,
mainly along and south of I-20. Otherwise, the weekend will be very
mild with afternoon temperatures rising well into the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Medium range computer guidance hints at a more significant
storm system in here toward the end of next week, around April 3 or 4,
which could bring a chance of beneficial rain and maybe some strong
storms. But, as you know there isn't much skill in a specific weather
forecast beyond seven days, so that could change.

DROUGHT MONITOR: The recent string of dry days has resulted in an
increased rain deficiency for 2008; Birmingham's total for the year is
12.38", which is 2.04" below average. Other rain totals since January
1 include 14.16" at Anniston and 13.21" at Tuscaloosa.

AT THE BEACH: Beautiful weather can be expected along the Central Gulf
coast through mid-week with mostly sunny mild days and clear cool
nights. Afternoon highs will be in the 68 to 72 degree range, and the
sea water temperature at Dauphin Island late yesterday was a cool 60
degrees. A few showers could show up late this week and over the
weekend, but we don't see a widespread or heavy rain event for the
Gulf coast for the next seven days.

PILES OF SNOW: Caribou, Maine had 32 inches of snow on the ground
yesterday. 186.3 (let me repeat that, 186.3) is how many inches of
snow Caribou has collected this winter. That is an all time record.
Previous was 181.1 inches set in the 1954-1955 season. Their snow
records date back to 1939. If the rest of this snow season is exactly
normal, Caribou will wind up with a season total of 200.8 inches–a
"bit more" that we received in Alabama. In fact, many places in
Alabama didn't even get .8" this season!

AN OVERNIGHT FREEZE: It is a late in the season freeze, but all
means not that unusual. We have had a freezing frost as late as April
23 and we have had mid 20s as late as mid April. In most years, you
could feel safe planting as early as about April 10 to 15. We should
also mention that around this time in 1924, March 24 and 25,
Birmingham was covered with a 7-inch blanket of snow. Down in Central
Alabama at Greensboro, there was the unusual sight of robins and
mockingbirds dancing around in the snow. Were they surprised!

BACK TO THE PRESENT: Would you believe there were a few snow
flurries over part of NE Alabama and NW Georgia in the middle of the
night? Vick Bell, the 33/40 Skywatcher at Black Creek in NE Etowah
County, reported some flurries in the middle of the night. Early this
morning, temperatures dropped as low as 25 at Muscadine in NE Alabama,
27 at Mumford, 28 at Lincoln and Black Creek, 30 in Weaver and Muscle
Shoals, 31 in Huntsville, 32 in Moody, Birmingham and Cullman.

The low temperatures tonight will be similar and, in some cases, a
degree or so lower. Here in Central Alabama we are looking for an
average low of 29. Tonight will be a marked example of temperature
inversions. By tomorrow morning, some of the colder valleys could be
as cold as 25 degrees and the ridge tops more like 35 or even 37. It
is a night when you should protect tender vegetation. By tomorrow, the
high-pressure area will move off to the east and a south wind will set
in. Temperatures will snap back to the mid 60s Tuesday afternoon and
the rest of the week will have 70s. Our next chance of any rain will
be Friday night and not much at that. We do not see any more freeze
threats all the way through the middle of next week.

After a series of storms, seemingly one after the other, our weather
has turned dry again. The Birmingham deficit as of today for the month
of March is already approaching 2 inches. We hope that we are not
drifting back in to a dry weather format for good. We are probably not.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Major, major flooding coming down the Mississippi.
One of the most extensive flood areas now is Eastern Arkansas caused
by the Mississippi and other tributaries. There is an excellent series
of photographs on the 33/40 blog contributed by Dennis DeShazo in the
vicinity of Pocahontas. Flood warnings go all the way down the
Mississippi. The crest at 39 feet is expected in East Baton Rouge next
Monday. If it goes one foot over that, it will spill over the
protective levee and cause widespread flooding on the LSU campus…22
below zero was the coldest in the lower 48 this morning at Presque
Isle, Maine…there is 32 inches of snow on the ground at Caribou and
they have now received 186 inches this season, which is an all-time
record.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: So busy, busy today that I have not
spent one minute playing with Little Miss Molly. When she crawled out
of bed this morning, she went to everyone in the house wagging her
tail and greeting them. I was busy running errands much of the morning
taking my wife to rehab and my granddaughter to work. Our grandson was
injured a few days ago falling face down on the concrete breaking his
nose and chipping a tooth. He is still under the care of a doctor. So,
Little Miss Molly has been shoved aside temporarily. I am going to
play with her this afternoon even if I have to skip a meal. She does
not ask for much…someone once said that there is no psychiatrist in
the world equal to a puppy licking your face. I believe that. Molly
is my psychiatrist, psychologist—you name it.......

..Chilly Monday...

Temperatures will be even chillier today than yesterday across
Alabama. Cold high pressure to our northwest is keeping us in a
fairly stout northerly flow of cool air. This will do two things. It
will limit our highs to the upper 50s today and it will keep dewpoints
nosing down into the lower 20s.

FIRE THREAT HIGH TODAY: This very low humidity, combined with
persistent northerly winds averaging 10-15 mph with present a fairly
high fire threat this afternoon across Central Alabama. Outdoor
burning should be avoided.

FREEZE WARNING TONIGHT: Those winds will relax tonight as the high
center drifts closer to Alabama. This will allow the mercury to
plummet into the upper 20s to near 30 degrees in many locations
overnight. Hence a freeze warning for North and Central Alabama.
Growers and gardeners should take steps to protect any tender
vegetation that might be damaged by the freeze tonight.

REST OF THE WEEK: Mostly sunny conditions should prevail on Tuesday
and a warm up should begin as our winds shift around to the
southeast. Wednesday looks to be a very nice day, with partly cloudy
conditions and highs back in the 70s. By Thursday, developing low
pressure to the west of Alabama will cause our winds to pick up out of
the south. A few showers may break out to the north of us on
Thursday, and showers will become possible for us on Friday as we find
ourselves in a developing warm sector of the cyclone. Readings both
days will be in the 70s. A line of storms will move through the state
Friday night or Saturday morning. Severe weather does not look like
it will be a problem. High pressure will build in for late in the
weekend and the airmass behind this system will be more Pacific in
nature and will not feature the cold readings we are experiencing now.

VOODOOLAND: There are still signs in the GFS that we will deal with
a couple of major wet weather systems during the first week of April.
If it verifies, parts of Alabama could get several inches of rainfall.

ON THIS DATE IN 1965: "The Governor's Tornado" carved a 13 mile path
across the western part of Atlanta. The tornado was so-named because
it caused considerable damage to the governor's mansion. Hundreds of
expensive homes, businesses and apartment complexes were damaged in
the early morning twister. Total losses were estimated at $56
million. Three people lost their lives and another 152 were injured
by the F3 tornado.

ON THIS DATE IN 1944: Royal Air Force crews flying bombing missions
over Germany encountered the tremendous upper level winds we now know
as the Jet Stream. Scientists at the University of Chicago gave the
name to the high altitude ribbon of high winds in 1947.

..Gorgeous Easter...
A beautiful Easter Sunday is in progress across Alabama today with a
good deal of sunshine and just some high clouds. Temperatures are
cooler than yesterday thanks to cold air advection occurring behind a
barely noticeable cold front that moved through on Saturday.
Temperatures will top out around 60 degrees this afternoon.

FREEZE WARNING: We are already into the growing season here in
Alabama. With cold high pressure building into Alabama, the
possibility exists for freezing conditions tonight and Monday night.
For that reason, a freeze warning has been issued for Central Alabama
for tonight. Readings will drop into lower to middle 30s tonight in
most locations. But in some areas, winds will relax enough to alow for
readings to drop below 32F for a few hours. Agricultural interests
and casual gardeners should take steps to protect any tender
vegetation that might be harmed by the prospective freeze. The same
conditions will exist tomorrow night, with even the potential for a
more widespread freeze by Tuesday morning as winds will be lighter. A
freeze watch is posted for now, but it will ikely be upgraded to a
freeze warning later.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday may be even cooler, with highs in the upper
50s, but a gradual warm up will continue through the week ahead. By
Tuesday, highs will be in the upper 60s and readings will be in the
lower to middle 70s by Wednesday. A pronounced southerly flow will
setup by Thursday in response to a developing storm system over the
Rockies that will be moving out onto the Central Plains. Our moisture
levels will be on the rise and it will feel quite springlike. Mostly
sunny to partly cloudy skies will prevail through Wednesday and it
should be dry. Expect a few more clouds Thursday and Friday, with a
chance of showers reappearing by Friday. Showers and storms will be
likely by Friday night and Saturday morning as that storm system lifts
out, dragging a cold front towards Alabama. Earlier model runs had
hinted that this system might stall over Alabama and wait on a
stronger system later in the weekend, but that idea disappeared on
overnight output. For now, this doesn't look like much of a severe
weather producer for Alabama, but any Spring system has to be watched.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Not much changed since last week in our drought
situation with the weekly Drought Monitor showing 69.0% of the state
in drought conditions. 34.1 percent of the state is still in D3-D4
drought conditions. That area is basically the northeastern third of
the state generally east of I-65 and north of I-85. One piece of good
news: the percentage of the state in D4, the worst drought condition,
is 1.5%, down from 4.2% last week. The D4 area encompasses eastern
Madison and western Jackson County.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: A blizzard across the central and southern
plains. Twenty one inches of snow fell at Pampa, Texas. Winds gusted
to 78 mph at Dodge City, Kansas and Altus, Oklahoma. Forty six
counties in Kansas were declared a disaster area. It is recognized as
the worst blizzard in thirty years in Kansas.
