...Breaking Records...

Saturday was a fifth straight day of 100 degree plus heat across many
sections of North and Central Alabama. Records were broken again at
Birmingham (102F), Pinson (105), Tuscaloosa (105F), Montgomery (106F)
and Anniston (102F). Nearly every major reporting station in the
state was at or above 100F on Saturday. It was the fifth consecutive
day of 100F degree heat in Birmingham, which is significant. More
about that in today's Weather Blog.

WIND CHILL READINGS ON SATURDAY: An almost indiscernible front moved
into South Central Alabama Friday night. It allowed some much drier
air to filter into the northern half of the state. Some slightly
cooler air may have been in the mix over North Alabama, where readings
may have been a couple of degrees cooler. Interestingly, the apparent
temperature was actually no higher than the air temperature in most
cases at peak heating. In actuality, because dewpoints were low, the
actual temperatures were a degree or two lower than the air temp. So,
we actually experienced wind chill on Saturday!

100F TODAY? Our high temperatures have been running just a few
degrees above guidance, so we will continue with that trend today.
Look for readings to again be in the 100-105 range. So add another
day to the streak.

DROUGHT REMINDER: The U.S. Drought Monitor has greatly expanded the
area considered to be under exceptional drought conditions. Almost
all of the northern half of the state is included in the exceptional
drought area. In addition, extreme Southeast Alabama and Southwest
Georgia is also included in an exceptional drought status also. That
may change in about ten days if the tropics cooperate…

DID HE SAY TROPICS? A tropical depression will likely form today or
tomorrow over the eastern Atlantic. This system has a chance to grow
up to become a significant Cape Verde hurricane. By early next
weekend, we could see a strong hurricane threatening the islands of
the Caribbean. It is too early to tell what specific track the
potential hurricane might take, although one plausible scenario
involves a track across the Greater Antilles and eventually into the
Gulf of Mexico. Then it is anyone's guess.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The large high pressure ridge moves around a bit
over the week ahead, but remains in firm control of Alabama's weather.
This means very hot conditions for the week ahead.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Even as Tropical Storm Bonnie was making
landfall near Apalachicola, preparations were being made for Hurricane
Charley. 1.9 million people began evacuating the west coast of
Florida in advance of the hurricane, most of them in the Tampa Bay
area. A mandatory evacuation was ordered for Pinellas and
Hillsborough Counties.

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Saturday August 11th, 2007

UNASHAMED!

Wouldn't it be awful to be ashamed of the most important things in our lives?

Many of us struggle when it comes to standing up for what we believe in.
Like our faith. There are times for all of us when we are tempted to be
ashamed of our faith. Or we downplay our faith so we won't offend someone.

Wouldn't it be great to live unashamed of our faith? Discover what it means
to live unashamed of the gospel and of Jesus Christ in a new sermon series
at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover beginning Sunday, August 12.
Worship and Sunday School hours are 8:05, 9:30 and 10:45 a.m.

...Meteor Watch...

The Perseid Meteor Shower is underway right now. It will peak during
the late night and early morning hours of Sunday night and Monday
morning. We will benefit from a new moon as we view the shooting
stars. For best results, get away from city lights. We could see one
meteor per minute during the peak times. The meteors are particles of
dust ejected from the comet Swift-Tuttle which are burning up about 80
miles overhead as we pass through the debris field. These small
particles, the size of sand grains, up to that of a pea, hit our
atmosphere going 37 miles per second. The streak is white hot
superheated air. The meteors appear to be originating from the
constellation Perseus, hence the name.

MERCURY WATCH: Monitoring the thermometer this morning as a blazing
sun in blue skies heats things up. Conditions were actually kind of
nice this morning, with temperatures in the lower 70s instead of the
middle and upper 80s. Readings were running about the same or a
little warmer than yesterday, when Birmingham peaked at 102F before an
early afternoon storm. Without the storm, how high would it have
gone? We may find out today.

MOVING FORWARD: The heat ridge builds back across the southern United
States as we head into the coming week. This means more temperatures
around the century mark. The high may contract toward the end of the
week, but any relief will be minor, perhaps a few degrees. Convection
will be limited with the strong ridge of high pressure over the area.

TROPICS: An area of disturbed weather associated with a tropical wave
over the northwestern Caribbean remains disorganized this morning.
One of the global prediction models has been bullish on developing a
tropical depression near Cuba, then sending it westward across the
Gulf of Mexico toward Texas. That possibility is still very real. A
strong tropical wave has moved off the western coast of Africa. It is
accompanied by intense convection this morning. There are indications
that this system will become a tropical depression over the weekend or
early next week as it moves westward. By midweek, we will be tracking
a Cape Verde hurricane as it approaches the islands of the Caribbean.
By next weekend, this could be a powerful hurricane threatening t he
Carolinas. Hurricane Flossie in the eastern Pacific may well threaten
Hawaii by
midweek.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Rare Utah tornado struck the downtown area of
Salt Lake City during the lunch hour, leaving one person dead and over
100 injured. The fatality was the first tornado death in Utah in
recorded history. The tornado, rated as an F2, caused extensive
damage to a convention tent adjacent to the Salt Palace, a Wyndham
hotel and the Delta Center. Only four F2 tornadoes have been recorded
in Utah history. 1999 was a memorable year for tornadoes since four
major metropolitan areas were struck, including Oklahoma City, Little
Rock, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City.

...Dog Days End Today...

This will be one of those cases where the thermometer will not agree
with the calendar. Today marks the official end to the Dog Days. The
Dog Days are named for the Egyptian belief that during the period of
time from July 3 through August 11 when the Dog Star Sirius rises and
falls with the sun, that the star added to the heat of the Sun.

ANY RELIEF IN SIGHT? Birmingham's rainfall deficit for the year has
now climbed over twenty inches. Some places are approaching twenty
five inches. No major drought busting rains are in sight for now. We
will see an increase in showers and storms next Friday as a trough
develops over the East Coast and a cool front settles in from the
north. That's about it in the rainfall department.

THE FORECAST: Some drier air has filtered into the northern half of
the state behind a southward moving boundary that pushed through the
area yesterday. This will help lower the heat index values across the
area today and tomorrow. Temperatures will be pushing 100 again, but
the lower dewpoints will keep us below the heat advisory criteria. By
Monday, the heat ridge will be building back in with a vengeance,
pushing the mercury back into the 100F-103F category. We may see some
relief by late next week, as a large upper trough sets up over the
eastern United States and our temperatures go back to normal for
August.

THE TROPICS: We are moving into the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane
Season. The GFS and other models have consistently depicted a
hurricane in the Atlantic next week, moving it north of Puerto Rico
after next weekend and then menacing the East Coast around the 22nd
before heading northward toward the Maritimes. There are still hints
that we will see tropical development over the southeastern Gulf of
Mexico or western Cuba in the next few days. Such a system should not
be a threat to Alabama, likely moving westward across the Gulf toward
Texas. The Canadian model has been very bullish on this idea, and
that model does well on such systems. The GFS has picked up on the
idea, but does not intensify the system into a hurricane as quickly.

EL NINO UPDATE: NOAA reports that sea surface temperatures over the
eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean continue to run slightly below
normal, but still short of the threshold for La Nina conditions.
These neutral conditions are expected to continue through the month of
August. Now, models continue to indicate that La Nina conditions will
return over the next three months. But they have been incorrectly
predicting this consistently of late. So, NOAA predicts a 50% chance
that La Nina conditions will come to fruition over the next three
months. Hopefully it will wait until after the peak of hurricane
season, since La Nina conditions favor tropical development in the
Atlantic.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: A major flash flooding event struck the
District of Columbia as over 6 inches of rain fell during a three hour
period during the afternoon. Over 3000 homes and 50 government
buildings received flood damage because of the stationary
thunderstorms. A Presidential Major Disaster Declaration was
declared. It was the worst flash flooding in the Capital city since
1944.

SLIGHTLY LESS HUMID SATURDAY: A front was working its way southward
across North Alabama this afternoon. About the only change with the
front, is a lowering of the dew points. In fact, during the day
Saturday we may see the dew point drop as low as 66 to 68, whereas it
has been way up in the mid 70s lately. That can make a noticeable
difference in the humidity.
But, that is still not enough to alter the extremely high afternoon
temperatures. The high may back off a bit Saturday and Sunday, but
there are signs the upper heat ridge will fight its way back eastward
early next week and we are calling for a high of 100 on Monday.

When that front forced its way into North Alabama early today, it
plus an upper-level minor disturbance, set off some scattered
thunderstorms that moved toward the SE and they were reaching Central
Alabama at mid afternoon. Around 1:00 p.m., trees were uprooted in
two places near Arab in Marshall County. In Cullman County, trees
were down and there was wind damage to a home in Baileyton. Arab and
Baileyton are not very far apart.

AT THE BEACH: It is that time when more people will take off for the
weekend. A slight drop in humidity will not reach the Gulf Coast
instead, look for temperatures in the low to mid 90s into early next
week with a heat index over 100 at times. There will be some
scattered thunderstorms, but few in number.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Our dear friend, the Gulf of Mexico, is sitting
and waiting for some kind of tropical storm to develop. The sea
surface temperature is unusually high. In fact, even in the deeper
waters of the Central and South Gulf, the temperatures are running 87
to 89. In the more shallow area closer to the Alabama/NW Florida
coast, the water temperature is as high as 90 or 91. There was a
broad trough of low pressure over the Central Caribbean this
afternoon moving WNW at 10 to 15. If any development occurs, it
should be slow.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: I just have to mention this to show you how
unusual the weather can be at times. On this date way back in 1882,
there was frost in the outlying areas of Chicago. There was a brief
snow squall at Sandusky, Ohio and a killing frost at Cresco, Iowa.
The lowest temperature in the USA this morning was 36 at Truckee,
California. In that same state, the hottest yesterday was 112 in
Death Valley. That place is cornering the market for the highest
temperature.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We had some illegal thunder in my tiny
corner this afternoon. We did not exactly expect that. With all the
people here, instead of running to hide under the bed, Little Miss
Molly followed anybody around that was moving. Even though I was as
busy as a earthworm crossing US-280, she kept begging me to pick her
up and hold her. Of course, I obliged—at least for a few minutes at a
time. Since her last haircut, she has been more cold natured. So,
when she gets scared, she also shivers. Life goes on......

...Blistering Heat Again Today...

OUR BLISTERING THURSDAY: Lets begin with a look back at some highs
around Alabama yesterday… 105 at Pinson, Alabaster, and Vestavia, 104
at Meadowbrook, Pelham, Columbiana, and East Trussville, 103 at the
Birmingham Airport, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Demopolis, Calera, Shelby
Shores, and Attalla, 102 at McCalla, Dothan, Evergreen, Helena,
Greystone Farms, and Troy, 101 at Cordova, Clay, Vinemont, Decatur,
Muscle Shoals, and Huntsville, and 100 at Albertville. The high of 103
in Birmingham was a new record high for August 9; the old record was
102 set during the long, hot summer of 1980. The last time Birmingham
reached 103 degrees was on July 19, 2000. Tuscaloosa's high of 103 was
also a record for the date.

The heat was even more intense to the east of Alabama; Columbia, South
Carolina peaked at 106 degrees, and the high was 104 in Nashville,
Raleigh, and Charlotte. Atlanta soared to 103. To the west, a judge
has banned schools in six north Mississippi counties from allowing
children to practice football and other outdoor activities between 9
a.m. and 7 p.m. because of temperatures that have soared above 100
degrees this week in the Magnolia state. Chancery Court Judge Mitchell
Lundy made the ruling yesterday after three deaths this week were
attributed to extreme temperatures. The latest death was a football
player from Mount Olive, Mississippi, who collapsed yesterday as a
result of heat stroke while practicing when it was 101 degrees. The
heat index was 110.

HOT, AND DRY: As we have often said here, heat waves and droughts go
hand in hand. Birmingham's rain deficit is now 19.90", and it will be
over 20 inches by tomorrow. Birmingham's rain total for the entire
month of August is 0.01". The rain deficiency for Anniston is 22.76",
while Tuscaloosa needs 24.20" to get back to normal for the year.

THE DAYS AHEAD: Small variations in the placement and strength of the
upper air high, which represents the heat bubble over much of the Deep
South, will determine afternoon highs here during the next seven days.
We will back off projected highs over the weekend by just a few
degrees, but the weather will remain sweltering with highs mostly in
the upper 90s. The warm air aloft associated with the ridge should
prevent afternoon showers and storms from forming; if they do show up
they will be very isolated.

By the middle of next week, the core of the heat should be west of
Alabama, and highs should get back into the low to mid 90s.

TROPICS: While there are no organized tropical systems across the
Atlantic basin, some computer models are trying to develop some kind
of tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico next week. Most likely it
won't impact Alabama because of the heat ridge, but as you know, with
tropical systems anything goes. The sea surface temperatures in the
Gulf of Mexico are still very warm; the water was an amazing 91.2
degrees (F) at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab late yesterday.

TAKE HEART, WE WILL SURVIVE THIS HEAT: We did in 1980 when we had a
major heat wave and so far this one does not compare with 1980.The
worst of our heat in 1980 came in mid-July when Birmingham had over
100 eight days in a row topped by 106 on July 13. We missed the
entire event. We were camping in the high country of Southern Utah at
Duck Creek and we scraped ice on the morning we started home. We had
a resurge of heat in August 1980, when we had 100 or higher 4 days in
a row, including 102 on August 9.

All of this history is not to belittle our current persistent heat.
It is plenty serious, especially so since it is walking hand-in-hand
with one of our worst droughts ever. The NWS in Huntsville issued a
statement this morning that drought conditions were rapidly
intensifying. Cullman, for example, has a deficit of 33.41 inches in
the last 18 months.

The upper-air heat ridge that we watch so closely at times like this
will keep our high temperatures above 100 for the next couple of
days. The ridge recedes to the west over the weekend only to encroach
more toward the east early next week. We could have a resurge of
heat, at least part of next week, so we increased our high for Monday
to 99. One of the models that we lean on the most is painting almost
completely dry weather through August 16. We do not buy that
completely. We could have a few isolated storms.

SPORTS/BEACH WEATHER: There is a big softball tournament in
Montgomery this weekend at Lagoon and Fain Parks. It is sponsored by
the Church of God. It is going to be hot with temperatures 101 to 103
in the afternoons and a heat index over 110. An isolated afternoon
thunderstorm is possible. It will not be long until we will be
issuing college football forecasts. At the beach, there will be a
chance of at least some showers and thunderstorms most days. Probably
the better chance will be tomorrow. It will be hotter than usual with
highs between 91 and 95.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Based on a long history, the hurricane season
peaks around September 10. Although there are a few disturbed weather
areas scattered out across the Atlantic, there is nothing promising
at the time. The National Weather Service issued a revised season
forecast today. It calls for 13 to 16 named storms, including 7 to 9
hurricanes, of which about 3 to 5 will be intense.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is pooped. Three
grandkids can do that. I have not gone on a long walk with the little
girl in three days. I enjoy the break, but I also miss it. She is
sleeping most of the day in some nook or corner. Most of the time,
her curiosity demands that she check into everything that goes on.
She wanders through the house aimlessly following anybody that
happens to walk through. She has been getting in bed close to
midnight and boy does she make up for lost time then. Life goes on
regardless of how much sleep one gets.......

...The Heat Parade Rolls Along...

Yesterday was the hottest day for Birmingham in seven years. The
official high was 102 degrees (based on data from the Birmingham
Airport); the last time we have recorded 102 degrees was on August 18,
2000. Yesterday's high was within two degrees of the record high for
August 8, 104 set back in 1935. The hottest temperature in the state,
based on official observations, was 103 at Anniston, Montgomery, and
Pinson. The high was 102 not only at the Birmingham Airport, but also
at the Shelby County Airport in Calera, and at Tuscaloosa.

HEAT OUTSIDE ALABAMA: Other highs in the heat bubble yesterday
included 105 at Columbia, South Carolina, 104 at Richmond, Virginia,
and 102 at Baltimore, Washington, Charlotte, and Louisville. Nights
have been sweltering in Atlanta; the low yesterday morning was 82.
That is the warmest overnight low in any month and Atlanta records go
way back to 1878.

ANOTHER BLISTERING AFTERNOON AHEAD: Unfortunately, the upper air high
responsible for the heat wave goes nowhere today, and temperatures
this afternoon should be very close to the values we saw yesterday
across the state. The high today will be generally in the 98 to 103
degree range. And, also like yesterday, showers and storms that form
during the heat of the afternoon should be over the southern half of
the state, and even down there they will be widely spaced. Ditto for
tomorrow.

OUR WEEKEND: We are slowly backing down the afternoon highs over the
weekend, but only by a few degrees. And, I am not sure too many will
notice much of a difference. But, the core of the intense heat will
begin shifting to the west, and by the middle of next week we expect
afternoon highs back in the low 90s, where we should be this time of
the year. The chance of afternoon storms still looks small on Saturday
and Sunday, but they should begin to return by next week as the air
aloft becomes a bit cooler, and the air a little more unstable.

TOPIC: TROPICS: A tropical wave is moving through the Caribbean this
morning, but upper air winds are currently unfavorable for the system
to gather any serious organization. The rest of the Atlantic basin is
relatively quiet.

BIG STORM IN THE BIG APPLE: Seems that the first tornado in history
struck Brooklyn early this morning. They have never had one. So, it
made weather history in the Big Apple. The NWS surveyed the damage
today and rated it as an EF2 tornado with winds between 111 and 135
mph.

It was a very stormy time between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. The New York
City morning commute was a pure nightmare. Thousands found themselves
going through hours of delays in the sweltering heat with subways out
of service. It was also extremely difficult to get an available taxi.
Buildings were unroofed and numerous trees and power lines came down.
A woman on Staten Island died in a car accident, which officials said
was due to unbelievable driving conditions. Scattered minor injuries
occurred in Brooklyn. JFK Airport measured 3.47" of rain, mostly in
two hours.

SAME SONG, SAME VERSE: It is a song of hot weather for Alabama. Any
way you sing it, it is going to be hot. We invite you to mainly focus
on the expected temperature and not just the wording. We do not
really know when to say hot, very hot, extremely hot, or
exceptionally hot. Much of that is left up to the individual. For
example, when it gets above 70, I consider it quite warm, because I
love cold weather. Please notice on our actual forecast that we are
also mentioning that it will also be humid. It should be obvious that
when we are forecasting 101 and 100, that the humidity will make it
feel much worse. On several days, the heat index will be around 110.

Dry is also part of our forecast. When the temperature gets up around
100 in Alabama on a summer day, you almost can always put a
magnifying glad on the radar and find an isolated thunderstorm
somewhere. Actually, the southern part of the state will have widely
scattered storms, but from Central Alabama northward, few if any
Thursday and Friday and only isolated ones over the weekend. The
ridge aloft, that spells hot weather for us in summer, will be over
us for the next couple of days and then it will recede to the west.
That will let our high temperatures back off at least a couple of
degrees by this weekend.

Our days are gradually getting shorter. We are losing about a minute
and 40 seconds of daylight each day. The sun is now setting about 19
minutes earlier and rising about 27 minutes later than it did on our
longest day.

TROPICAL WEATHER: When Hurricane Dennis came ashore in July 2005,
there were 41 fatalities and almost $2 billion in property damage.
Our next named storm will be Dean, but there is no action at all now
in the Atlantic Basin to suggest tropical formation.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: I am glad I was not in New York City for the
morning commute. Extensive flash flooding and even a tornado warning.
There was property damage in some parts of the city with numerous
trees down, several homes unroofed and some structural damage. At JFK
Airport, 3.47 inches of rain, mostly in about 2 hours. Nearby Newark
got over 3 inches. 110 in Death Valley was the hottest Tuesday. A
subfreezing 29 this morning at Stanley, Idaho, as picturesque a town
as you will ever see. New Hampshire has only 10 counties as compared
to 67 for Alabama. That should make warning responsibility a bit easier.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Was very glad to hear from Melissa
Smith this morning. It has been 1 year since their dog, Munchkin, was
lost in Birmingham. She and her husband Barry made numerous trips
from their home in Tuscaloosa back to Birmingham to search all over
the place. There was a massive outpouring of volunteers, but Munchkin
is still missing. In June, they adopted a 10-month old part Lab puppy
named Gracie. Gracie and their other dog, Alex, quickly became great
friends. I sure am glad they made that decision. That will be good
for all of them. We still wish them the best of luck that Munchkin
will show up one day. If Little Miss Molly were to vanish, I would
not sleep for a year. Life goes on.......

...Dog Day Afternoon...

Come on, October. I am not sure you can find many fans of August
weather in Alabama, and what we are experiencing this week is the
primary reason why that is the case. Yesterday, the official high in
Birmingham was 100 degrees; nine degrees above the "normal" high of
91, and within a few degrees of the record high for August 7 (103 in
1935). Dewpoints remained in the 70 to 75 degree range over much of
the state during the peak of the heat, making the afternoon very
oppressive, and sending heat index values above 105 in spots.

Unfortunately, the weather won't change much today, tomorrow, and
Friday as an upper air high overhead goes nowhere. The warm air aloft
associated with the system should keep a lid on most developing
showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. We sure can't rule out a
shower or storm in a few spots with this kind of heat, but they
should be few and far between, and most Alabama communities will
remain dry as a bone. Afternoon temperatures will rise into the 98 to
102 degree range in most places, and heat index values will exceed
105 at times. Just use your common sense and stay cool as best you
can in this kind of hot weather pattern.

RECORD HEAT? We would have to reach 104 degrees today to tie
Birmingham's record, and that is unlikely. The record high today and
yesterday was set during the summer of 1935 in the midst of a decade
that featured seriously hot summers not only across the Deep South,
but across much of the nation. This heat wave, while very
uncomfortable, doesn't have much of a chance to go into the record
books.

WEEKEND PEEK: The weather will stay excessively hot on Saturday, but
we believe the heat levels will begin to slowly back down by Sunday
and the first few days of next week as the core of the heat bubble
shifts to the west of Alabama. Still, highs will be in the 90s.

WE NEED RAIN: Birmingham's rain deficiency has grown to 19.67", and
that figure should exceed 20 inches by the time we reach the weekend.
The rain deficit for both Tuscaloosa and Anniston is well over 20
inches. And, unfortunately we really don't see much hope for a major,
widespread rain event for the next seven days. Isolated afternoon
showers and storms won't help the situation much, and a large part of
North-Central and Northeast Alabama remains under an exceptional
drought.

HEAT PARADE: Highs around Alabama yesterday included 101 at
Montgomery, Evergreen, and Pinson, 100 at Birmingham, Anniston,
Tuscaloosa, Troy, and Muscle Shoals, and 99 at Huntsville. Elsewhere
across the Southeast U.S., highs included 102 at Columbia, South
Carolina, 101 at Louisville, Kentucky, and 100 at Nashville, Tennessee.

NOT HOT EVERYWHERE: From the Sacramento Bee: "Don't tell Al Gore, but
global warming is taking a holiday in Sacramento this week. The
maximum temperatures Sunday and Monday set records each day -- as the
coolest "highs" for the dates since record-keeping began in 1877.
Forecasters credit a deep marine layer and a potent low-pressure
trough with funneling the cool air this way."

THE EVIL OLD THERMOMETER: We might as well grin and bear it. We must
stand up and fight this heat and humidity for the rest of the week. A
bit of good news by the weekend. We expect high temperatures to back
off a few degrees. It will still be way to uncomfortable.

Look for high temperatures threatening to push the 100-degree mark
every day. For the next three days, we are listing 99 or 100 here in
Central Alabama. There will be some variation, a bit hotter in
Tuscaloosa and not quite so much so in Anniston. The old heat pump or
air conditioner will get very little rest, because overnight
temperatures are going to hang out in the mid 70s. On most nights, it
will still be in the mid 80s when the 10:00 news comes on. The next
question is the chance of rain. The long dreaded high-pressure ridge
aloft (translation: hot weather) is expected to be in place by
tomorrow. In fact, it may be centered near Birmingham. The next three
days will be our hottest. The chance of a cooling thunderstorm is
almost non-existent for Wednesday and Thursday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The Gulf of Mexico is a lady in waiting. The sea
surface temperature is 86 over almost all of that big body of water.
A tropical system jumps up and down with joy with water that warm. It
is just like a little kid in a candy store or just like me in a Pop-
Tart factory. Despite the warm water, there is nothing going on at
the moment to even hint at development.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Not everybody is running their air conditioner
around the clock. In Sacramento, high temperatures over the weekend
were in the mid 70s. That was their coolest daytime highs since
records started way back in 1877. In Montgomery, the old thermometer
had already reached 101 this afternoon. One of our blog readers
reported a heat index of 111 in Dothan. In 1904, a railroad bridge
near Pueblo, Colorado collapsed after being weakened by a flash
flood. A passenger train fell into the water and 89 people were
killed. While we are crying for rain in Alabama, the National Weather
Service in Ft. Worth had to issue 531 Flash Flood Warnings so far
this year for North Texas. This is almost unheard of.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is experiencing a big
change. With 7 people now living here instead of 2, my little pal is
getting constant attention and not much naptime. She is a creature of
habit and loves to play at almost any hour of the day or night. She
also loves long naps during the daytime, but she is not getting
those. Last night when she finally folded up for the night, her eyes
looked weary and she was completely pooped. It is not that everybody
is keeping her awake. Instead, she is so nosy that she has to watch
anything that is going on whether it is her business or not. Life
goes on with less rest.....

...More Summer Heat Ahead...

Early August in Alabama usually means three things when it comes to
our weather, and all of them start with H: hot, hazy, and humid. That
will be our story for the next five days. The heat will certainly
headline the forecast through mid-week, as afternoon temperatures rise
into the 96 to 100 degree range statewide. Throw in high dewpoints and
relatively humidity levels, and heat index values will approach 110
degrees in spots. Quite frankly, this kind of heat is not going to set
records, and is not really that extraordinary for this time of the
year in Alabama, but it can be brutal if you have to work outdoors. I
won't insult your intelligence and run down a bunch of hot weather
"safety rules" (like drinking water!), but just use your common sense
and take it easy. I will pass along one idea sent to us by many of our
readers; don't forget your pets in this kind of hot weather; they need
cool water too!

We can't rule out a few isolated showers or storms with this kind of
heat, but warm air aloft associated with the upper air high will keep
a lid on most developing storms. The chance of any one spot getting
wet through Thursday is only about one in ten, and most of the showers
will be over the eastern half of the state.

WEEKEND PEEK: Looks like the core of the heat bubble will begin to
move slowly to the west by the weekend, and accordingly we will begin
to back off the forecast high temperatures just a bit by Saturday and
Sunday. Still, we will be in the low to mid 90s over the weekend with
a good supply of hazy sunshine. As an upper air trough develops over
the eastern seaboard, there is some chance that we could see an
increase in the number of scattered afternoon showers and storms, but
the GFS (the primary American global computer model) sure looks dry
for both Saturday and Sunday at this time.

TROPICS: Unfortunately there is no sign of any tropical systems that
will bring beneficial rain to Alabama anytime soon. We do note a
large, organized tropical wave on satellite images that will move off
the coast of Africa today and into the eastern Atlantic.

DROUGHT MONITOR: The numbers don't look good. The rainfall deficit for
Birmingham is now 19.55". The rain deficiency for Anniston is 22.43",
and a whopping 23.81" in Tuscaloosa. Those numbers will only increase
in coming days.

THE HEAT PARADE: Hot spot in Alabama yesterday was Montgomery with 100
degrees. Birmingham's official high was 98. To the east, Augusta,
Georgia recorded a high of 101, and in South Carolina both Columbia
and Florence reached 102 degrees.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: Cool continental air invaded the far northern
part of the U.S. yesterday; at International Falls, Minnesota the high
yesterday was only 68 degrees, which followed a morning low of 47. The
coldest place in the nation yesterday morning was the town of Wisdom,
Montana with a frosty 30 degrees.

A WEEK OF EXCESS HEAT: Sometimes we call this kind of weather triple-
H weather and that stands for hot, humid and hazy. That is the best
way to describe our weather for at least all of this week and maybe
longer. It will be dangerously hot at times, especially in the
afternoon. We are calling for high temperatures for the rest of the
week to be between 98 and 100. On some of those days, the dew points
will be well in the 70s. Translation, the heat index will be much
higher topping out on some days as high as 110. See our day-by-day
forecast for the specifics.

When it is this hot, even with limited moisture, it is almost a daily
occurrence that isolated thunderstorms will form during the
afternoon. This is not a time to look for significant drought relief,
because most communities will remain dry and overall the drought will
worsen. Even though we are calling for upper 90s for each afternoon,
some communities will easily reach 100, especially over on the west
side of the state.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The team of hurricane experts, at Colorado State
University in Ft. Collins, backed off a bit on their 2007 seasonal
outlook. They are now calling for 15 named storms in the Atlantic
Basin, including 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes of Category 3 or
higher. The next named storm will be . The Atlantic Basin includes
the Atlantic, Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Very little going on
at this time. A small disturbed weather area was located over the SW
corner of the Gulf of Mexico this afternoon just east of the Mexican
coast. It should move inland later today before it has time to give
us any promise.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: A fireman was struck by lightning on
August 6, 1992 in Sarasota County, Florida. Ironically, he was
fighting a fire that was caused by lightning. He was knocked
unconscious.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 118 in Death Valley as the hottest in the
country Sunday. That famous weather station has been the hottest an
unusually number of days this summer. The low for the country was 31
at Stanley, Idaho in the midst of the Sawtooth Mountains. Over the
weekend, it dropped as low as 39 at Saranac Lake in Upstate New York.
That part of the country has had a wide swing in temperatures so far
this year and a lot of strong thunderstorms.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure did get a kick out of the lead-
off comment from Pastor Tim Lovett at Huffman Baptist yesterday. It
went something like this: "If you tell me you can love everyone
equally, regardless of looks, amount of money, personality,
nationality and religion, you are almost as good as a dog." You
should have seen the broad smile on my face, because a brilliant
image of Little Miss Molly flashed in my mind. There is not a person
in the world that she does not love. In her waking hours, her tail is
wagging almost constantly. I wish I could wag my tail. A thought came
to mind, what if humans had a tail like a dog and in the same
proportion. Can you imagine the swishing and thumping sound at an
Alabama-Auburn game? I assure you I am not losing it. I just have a
vivid imagination. Life goes on even when I get silly.....

...Excessive Heat...

Our current heat wave looks like it will intensify slightly as we head
into this new work week. High temperatures will consistently be in
the upper 90s, with a few 100s thrown in. Dewpoints will be in the
middle 70s a good deal of the time. This will push heat index values
to around the dangerous level of 110F. A temperature of 100F with a
dewpoint of 72F yields a 110F heat index. At 99F, a dewpoint of 73.5F
will do it. A dewpoint of 75F only requires a temperature of 97.5F to
do it.

Things become even more dangerous when nighttime lows don't drop below
75F. This means that things do not have a chance to cool off. When
we see afternoon heat indices of 110F coupled with overnight lows of
75F or greater, heat advisories will be issued. A slew of heat
advisories, excessive heat watches and excessive heat warnings are now
in effect from northeastern Oklahoma through Missouri into Illinois
and Ohio back down into Tennessee and Mississippi.

SOME HEAT SAFETY RULES: Limit your outdoor activities. Take it easy
if you must be outside. Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of
water. If you do not have air conditioning, take a break and head to
the mall or another air conditioned location. Be on the alert for the
signs of heat exhaustion.

ANY RELIEF IN SIGHT: With all of the heat and humidity today and
tomorrow, we will call for the development of these daily isolated,
short lived showers that sometimes grow up to become storms. Coverage
will be very limited, but if you do find yourself underneath one of
them, you will get some heavy rain and sharp lightning. The ridge may
build enough on Wednesday and Thursday to suppress most storm
development, but we will have to wait and see. The re-emergence of an
East Coast trough by Friday will hopefully bring increased shower and
storm chances, especially by the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: Virginia experiences its worst tornado
outbreak ever as 18 tornadoes rip through the state in 5 hours. In
an average year, only six tornadoes are reported in the state and the
worst outbreak prior to this date produced just ten twisters. The
most devastating tornado caused severe damage in the historic part of
Petersburg, then moved on to Pocahontas Island and into Colonial
Heights. Here the storm ripped apart a WalMart store, killing three
people and injuring nearly 200. The F4 twister was the first known
violent tornado in Virginia history. It killed a total of 4 people
and injured 246 along its 12 mile path. Total damages were nearly $50
million. .

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Tropical Storm Barry moved inland on the Gulf
Coast near Fort Walton Beach, Florida around midnight with top winds
of 60 mph. The storm caused $30 million in damage. Heavy rains
spread northwestward across Alabama. Up to 3 inches of rain fell in
the Birmingham area. One of the casualties of the storm was the
N'Sync concert at Legion Field. It was cancelled due to the rain.
Birmingham picked up a wind gust of 31 mph.

Worship and Sunday School hours are 8:05, 9:30 and 10:45 a.m.

...Hot Week Ahead...

The mercury was edging toward the century mark across parts of Central
Alabama this afternoon. We will be flirting with the century mark
over the next six days or so as a stifling upper level high pressure
system centers itself over the Deep South, including Alabama. It is a
reasonable expectation to think that we will see Heat Advisories
issued for the excessive heat here in Alabama over the next few days.
The heat advisory criteria here is when two days with afternoon heat
indices are expected to reach 110F and overnight lows stay above 75F.
It is time to start thinking about any neighbors, friends or relatives
who may reside in a non-airconditioned home.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT: Hey! What ever happened to Air
Stagnation Advisories? You don't see those anymore. If we still had
them around, we would be under one now. What we are under is a Code
Orange Air Quality Alert for the foreseeable future. Hope fully we
will avoid going Code Red at some point over the next few days. The
air will be unhealthy for sensitive individuals under the Code Orange
Alert, with ozone the primary pollutant.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Today looks a lot like yesterday on the radar and
satellite. Tomorrow should look a lot like today. I had thought that
we might see an increased chance of storms on Monday based on some
model data, but that idea seems to have vaporized with this morning's
run. In fact, Tuesday looks similar. So, let's call for sunny, hazy
morning, partly cloudy afternoon with hot temperatures and isolated
storms developing by the lunch hour through Tuesday. I think the high
is established enough to suppress storm development by Wednesday and
Thursday, meaning rain chances will be almost nil. By Friday, there
may be enough lift to produce widely scattered storms. The morning
run of the GFS is more bullish on the idea of an East Coast trough by
next weekend. This means that we might see an approaching front by
Saturday and Sunday. Along with that, our shower and storm chances
should be on the rise, hopefully.

ON THIS DATE IN 1783: The Mount Asama volcano in Japan erupted
violently, blowing the top off of the mountain and sending huge
amounts of ash into the atmosphere. Over 1000 villagers were killed
by lava, steam, moiling mud and superheated gases as its pyroclastic
flow engulfed the villages on the northern flanks of the mountain.
Sunlight was blocked over northern Japan for several months, resulting
in a famine that killed 1.4 million Japanese. The Winter of 1783-84
was remarkably cold in the Eastern United States, as noticed by
Benjamin Franklin from Philadelphia.

Although he did not know of the eruption, he did hypothesize that the
cold temperatures were the result of a fog of dust in the atmosphere
over Europe and North America. The cold was so intense that sleds
could cross the Long Island Sound and the harbor at New York was
frozen for 10 days.

...Hot Hazy and Humid...

It was a hot one across Central Alabama on Saturday. It was the
hottest day of the year so far at the Birmingham Airport with a
reading of 99F. Pinson topped out at 99F. Tuscaloosa reached the
century mark with a high of 100F.

CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT: High concentrations of ozone in the
lower atmosphere have resulted in a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for
the Birmingham Metro area.

DROUGHT REMINDER: As if most folks need to be reminded. But our
rainfall deficit in Birmingham is officially now at over nineteen
inches. And it continues to grow. Most water systems have drastic
restrictions in place, so check which rules you are subject to. And
look out for those surcharges. They can be significant.

DANGEROUS HEAT AHEAD: So far, the heat has been uncomfortable. But
now, it is about to become dangerous. Hot temperatures are going to
combine with increasing humidities over the next twenty four hours to
start pushing heat index values toward dangerous levels. By the
middle of next week, a powerful upper level high extending from the
Central Plains states eastward to the mid-Atlantic states will send
the mercury soaring over a wide area including North Alabama.
Temperatures in the upper 90s will be common, with readings at or
above t he century mark likely. Already, the National Weather Service
in St. Louis is worried, with Excessive Heat Warnings posted through
Tuesday and an Excessive Heat Watch for the rest of the week. Other
offices will be following suit, including ours here in Alabama most
likely. The build of heat can be deadly, increasing the chance for
heat related illnesses. People in houses and apartments without air
conditioning will be very vulnerable. Fans will be critical in such
homes. Plan to spend time in an air conditioned location as much as
possible. Give your body a break from the heat. Avoid extended work
outdoors. Wear loose fitting, light colored clothing.

ANY RELIEF IN SIGHT? Isolated storms today. A hint that we may see
a better chance of storms tomorrow as moisture levels rise. Then ss
the upper high builds right in on top of us next week, it may act
unfortunately to suppress the development of those daily showers and
storms. That is not good news. There is some hope that as a trough
of low pressure builds along the East Coast by the end of the week, we
will see an increased chance of showers and storms.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Sun kinked rails can be a problem for
railroads when extremely high temperatures cause welded rail to expand
and buckle. When this happened on this date on the route of the
Empire Builder near Saco, Montana, twelve of the passenger trains cars
derailed, injuring 149 people.
