GOOD AFTERNOON: Let me start by saying that forecasting snow in Alabama
has its challenges. And the situation that is unfolding for Sunday night
and Monday is no different. As Brian, so aptly said during this morning's
map discussion on the blog, there are several model runs between now and
then. Having said that, it is an interesting situation.

THE PLOT THICKENS: The numerical weather prediction models have been
consistently painting a picture of moisture moving into cold air over
Alabama tomorrow night and Monday morning. The position of the freezing
line up at about 5000 feet is critical. Temperatures need to be below
freezing at that level for snow to make it to the ground as snow before
melting. The lunchtime run of the NAM still shows that line somewhere in
the I-20 corridor Monday morning at sunrise. At the onset of the
precipitation, temperatures at the surface are expected to be near or just
above freezing. Dewpoints will be in the middle to upper 20s. As
precipitation begins to fall into the relatively drier air, evaporation
occurs. This process removes energy from the air and allows temperatures to
drop a few degrees. This evaporational cooling may allow temperatures to
drop enough below freezing to increase the likelihood of snow. We have seen
numerous cases where this has produced significant snowfall events. The
April 1987 surprise 7 inch snow. A January 1982 event that produced about
four inches in Birmingham. I think evaporational cooling will be involved
with this system.

THE FORECAST: Skies will clear tonight with temperatures dropping into
20s over the area. Sunday should dawn bright and clear with mostly sunny
skies expected for most of the day. Clouds will begin to move in late in
the day and overnight as low pressure approaches from the west.
Precipitation should reach western sections around midnight and overspread
much of the state during the overnight hours. The precipitation may fall as
snow over parts of North Alabama, generally along and north of the I-20
corridor. As a matter of fact, two to four inches of snow may fall in some
locations. Ground temperatures are warm enough to prevent significant
accumulations on roads unless snowfall rates are high enough to overcome the
effect. Winter storm watches may be required for parts of the area by
tomorrow morning.

South of the snow area, the precipitation type will changeover to a
rain/snow mix and then to rain the further south that you go. The system
will be moving quickly, and precipitation should end during the afternoon.
Tuesday looks to be a mostly sunny day. There were thoughts that a
Wednesday disturbance might be accompanied by a little snow, but that looks
unlikely.

A shot of cold air arrives on Thursday, and this shot is followed by a giant
trough of low pressure over the eastern United States that looks like it
will bring us potentially the coldest air of the season.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: The nation was in the midst of the coldest weather
since 1989. The temperature in Waterloo, Iowa final went above zero at 3pm
to break an amazing string of 139 hours below zero that started at 7pm on
January 30th. LaCrosse, Wisconsin also set its record for longest period of
subzero temperatures (144 hours). Baton Rouge, Louisiana recorded their
all-time record high barometric pressure with a reading of 30.82 inches,
while the temperature remained below freezing continuously for 68 hours.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: A huge winter storm pounded the West. Alta, Utah
picked up forty nine inches of snow in four days. Sixty six inches fell in
sex days at Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado As much as seven feet of snow fell
in northern New Mexico over a three day period.

...A Raw Day...

GOOD MORNING: What a difference a day makes. Friday was rather pleasant
after a fogy start, with highs topping out in the 60s in most locations.
North Alabama highs were in the 50s, while Auburn and Montgomery reached
70F. Elevated thunderstorms moved across the state during the evening
hours, producing a few reports of fairly large hail. A carport was damaged
in western Jefferson County. A man was struck by lightning in eastern
Tuscaloosa County near Vance. Fortunately, he survived.

TURN TO COLDER: The thunderstorm activity was occurring ahead of a low
pressure system that traversed the state overnight. Northwesterly winds on
the back side of the low ushered in much colder air. Temperatures today
will not rise very much, if at all. This means that readings will stay in
the 30s over North Alabama all day to the lower 40s over Central Alabama.
It will also be on the windy side, with northwest winds averaging 10-18 mph.

Our surface low is located over West Virginia this morning. The wraparound
moisture on the back side of the low is mixing with the cold air to produce
a few snow flakes over North Alabama. Will not be surprised to see some
lightaccumulations from last night over the Tennessee Valley. Snow flurries
could linger over Northeast Alabama through the day.

Skies will remain cloudy most of the day, with perhaps some clearing by late
afternoon. But the clearing may wait until tonight. As winds die down and
skies clear overnight, temperatures will drop into the middle 20s in most
locations. A few colder locations might flirt with 20 degrees.

LOOKING AHEAD: Sunday looks to be a sunny but cold day, with highs in the
40s. Then things get interesting for Sunday night into Monday morning as a
low pressure system approaches from the west. There could be a snow threat
by then, as the low passes across South Alabama. The critical snow
thickness line will be right around Birmingham. Precipitation could mix
with or fall as snow late Sunday night into Monday morning. It will make
for an interesting weekend in the office.

WIDESPREAD RAIN TONIGHT: Rain will spread into West Alabama later this
afternoon and become widespread across the state tonight along with a few
thunderstorms. Most of the thunderstorms will be over the southern half of
the state where there is a slight risk of severe weather from about the
Demopolis-Selma-Montgomery-Phenix City area southward.

Meanwhile, colder air will be spilling into the northern part of the state
overnight and by morning you will feel a distinct chill in the air. For some
parts of North Alabama, the thermometer will struggle to get above 40
Saturday. Most of the rain will be out of here by Saturday morning, but some
lingering light rain over the north could briefly change over to snow
flurries before ending. No problems anticipated. Still looks like Sunday
morning will be the coldest and we are sticking to our original 25-degree
low that we have been forecasting for several days.

While Sunday will be mostly sunny, another quick turnaround for Monday as
showers arrive again followed by another change to colder Monday night. Some
parts of the upper south may have to watch very closely for the possibility
of accumulating snow with the Monday system.

SUPER BOWL WEATHER: Of course the game is played indoors, but in Detroit a
significant snow event will occur late Saturday and Saturday night with 5 to
8 inches of snow accumulating. Snow showers will continue on Sunday. It will
be windy with a high only about 29.

BITTER, BITTER COLD: Don't know how many adjectives we need to describe it,
but the temperature fell to 61 below zero this morning at Chandalar Lake,
Alaska with an amazing wind chill of 86 below! In Deadhorse, it was 54
below. Barrow had a wind chill of 78 below.

SCANNING THE HORIZON: Skipping around everywhere...how about 94 for a high
in Harlingen, Texas yesterday? That is 3 degrees hotter than Birmingham's
normal high in July...it was 8 below zero this morning in Thief River Falls,
Minnesota...significant flash flooding in St. Petersburg-Tampa this morning
where 3 inches of rain fell in just a few hours...another monster of a storm
moving in on the Pacific Northwest and south winds may gust as high as 100
mph near the Oregon coast and 65 mph along the Interstate 5 corridor...also,
tons of new snow in the high country where the snow pack is already
enormous.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly does not know that when I
spend quite a bit of time in my weather office, that I am working.
Periodically during the day, she will poke that little tiny nose in the door
and look at me as if I am trying to avoid playing with her. She has that
wistful look in her eye with her tail wagging ever so slowly. I try not to
look at her, because I melt...very nice walk this morning and we met some
new neighbors who had never seen Molly before. Molly reacted to them like
they were long lost friends. They had a real love session with her in the
middle of the walking track. That little ambassador did it again. I sure am
glad that Molly is not a salesdog trying to sell me something. I would go
broke. Life goes on rain or shine, storms or sun.

...More Unsettled Weather...

The weather just won't stay the same and here we go with some more
significant changes over the next several days including a sharp change to
colder over the weekend.

But first things first. After some of this fog and lower clouds lift later
this morning, we will have a partly sunny day. Much of the day should be
without showers, but some scattered ones will start late today. Showers and
some thunderstorms should increase tonight.

On the old backyard thermometer you will see a real change Saturday as
temperatures start going south. Early morning lows should be in the 30s and
afternoon highs will do good to get into the 40s. There will be some
scattered lingering light rain and some of that could be in the form of snow
flurries before all of the precipitation moves out late Saturday morning.

Sunday should be dry with mostly sunshine with lows in the mid 20s. In the
colder valleys, it could be closer to 20.
Some more changes early next week. There are some indications that a
significant snow may come to upper parts of the south on Monday. We do not
think this will include Alabama. Instead, we should have mostly showers on
Monday maybe changing over to snow flurries Monday night, so hang on for a
wild ride.

ROAMING: Just like mid-summer in South Texas yesterday as the temperature
climbed to a hot 94 at Harlingen...the coldest in Alaska in the last 24
hours was 53 below zero at Nikolai, Noatak, and Point Lay.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Going to spend a whole lot of time today with
my little 9-pound stick-tight pal otherwise known as Little Miss Molly. Even
her initials, LMM, have become famous. We sure did have some fun yesterday
with a large number of ballgames and kick ball. Several pleasant walks
around the walking track. It was ideal walking weather...we have now had
Molly over 3 years and I am going to figure up approximately how far she and
I have walked. I feel sure, if we straightened out the mileage, we would be
in Chicago by now. Every single mile has been a delight. Life goes on.

STORM ALERT 2006: The first edition kicks off tonight at 7 o'clock at the
Bevill State Community College at Hamilton in NW Alabama. Be sure and show
up early if you want a good seat. The entire ABC 33/40 weather team will be
there to meet you and the program is varied and very interesting.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a weather story of more changes which will also
include some very cold temperatures over the weekend.
Showers and some thunderstorms spread eastward quickly across a good part of
the state today. Mobile got some of the heaviest rain-well over 1 inch.
Tuscaloosa received about 2/3 of an inch. Most of the showers had diminished
this afternoon, but there is still a risk of some more showers tonight
especially through the evening.

Much of Friday will be dry, but there may be some more showers at some point
during the afternoon and especially Friday night.

THE COLDER WEEKEND: Windy and much colder weather is expected Saturday with
temperatures hanging around in the 40s most of the day. In fact, it could
drop into the upper 30s over NE Alabama before the day is over. Scattered
light rain will still be hanging around during the morning and there could
even be a few snow flurries up over NE Alabama. No problems expected.

TORNADO IN NEW ORLEANS: If there is any place in the world that did not
need a tornado, it was New Orleans. However, they had two in the area early
this morning. A number of Katrina-damaged buildings were damaged even more
or destroyed. One of the tornadoes touched down on the main New Orleans
Airport causing considerable damage. The official weather observer on the
site witnessed the funnel cloud.

HITHER AND YON-MOSTLY YON: There are so many snow fans in Alabama that we
want to give them some snow depths this morning just to tease them: 100
inches in Farmington Canyon, Utah; 123 inches at Alta, Utah; 76 inches at
Coldfoot, Alaska (I love that name); 52 inches at Never Summer, Colorado at
an elevation of 10,280 feet. Another great name.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Super Bowl in Detroit Sunday, it looks like a cold
blustery time. There will be occasional snow showers throughout the weekend.
The low Sunday 22 with a high of 30.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Out walking Little Miss Molly saw something
interesting. Mr. Earthworm was moseying down the walking track going the
same way we were going. Little Miss Molly almost stepped on him, but she was
so busy looking for her wanna-be husband, Jo-Jo, that she didn't see
him...does that lone worm mean that spring is just around the corner? How
about azaleas blooming in Houston already!...that photograph on the front
page of the Birmingham News this morning really got to me. I asked the
co-owner of Little Miss Molly if we cold call the Homewood shelter and adopt
the little puppy. Hope you saw the picture. It is devastating to know that
so many dogs and cats get euthanized, but I agree that is the best course of
action if people don't care enough to have their pets spayed and neutered.
It is a touching and sober story. Hope everyone will see it and love their
pets even more. Life goes on and we sure do love having Miss Molly along for
the ride.

...Wet Weather Returns...

Wet weather headlines our forecast today for Alabama as rain should become
widespread this morning. A few embedded thunderstorms are possible, but the
air is too stable for any significant severe weather. Rainfall amounts of
one half to one inch are likely before the rain ends this evening.
Temperatures will hold in the 50s much of the day as the rain falls.

A few strong to severe storms are possible today along the Gulf coast of
Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle.
Most of the day tomorrow should be rain-free, but a very deep upper air
trough develops over the eastern U.S., and will drive a strong cold front
through here during the pre-dawn hours Saturday. A shower is possible late
tomorrow or tomorrow night as the front moves through.

SATURDAY: All of Alabama will experience a sharp change to colder weather
beginning Saturday. Temperatures will hover in the 37 to 43 degree range
most of the day with an icy northwest wind. A surface low pressure area is
forecast to move from near Mobile to Eufaula to Augusta, GA, and that
feature has the potential to bring some light rain as far north as I-20
during the day. As the cold air deepens, we might even see a few snow flakes
before the precipitation ends Saturday afternoon. If snow flakes do fall,
we don't expect any accumulation since the ground is relatively warm, and
the precipitation should be light.

We will drop well down in the 20s early Sunday morning as the sky becomes
clear.

STORM ALERT 2006: Our annual severe weather awareness tour begins tonight in
Hamilton. The show begins at 7:00 at Bevill State's auditorium; be sure and
get there early to get a seat. There is no admission charge!

MUCH COLDER BY THE WEEKEND: But before then we have some more big changes
in the weather and some of those changes are not sealed in stone. Clouds
will increase tonight with a few showers reaching West Alabama before
daybreak. Here in Central Alabama, rain will become more widespread during
the day Thursday and we could also have a thunderstorm. The rain should
taper off Thursday night. Friday should give us a break from a lot of rain,
but we will still have a chance of a few showers and maybe even a
thunderstorm increasing again Friday night. Extreme South Alabama may be
under a slight risk of severe weather during this timeframe.

Much colder air will start pouring into the area late Friday night and
Saturday. We are using 43 for a high, but the temperature may be actually
falling, especially during the afternoon. Part of Saturday will be wet, but
the rain will gradually end late in the day or during the evening. The rain
could change over to snow flurries or light snow before ending. This is
especially true up over the northern counties where it is not out of the
question for a dusting of snow on some of the ridges.

However, this all depends on the path of a low pressure area that we think
will track across South and Central Alabama during the day Saturday.
Finally, we should have sunshine on Sunday with lows in the mid 20s. Some of
the colder valleys could be in the low 20s.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: 83 at McAllen and Ft. Stockton, Texas was the warmest
yesterday...lows this morning were near zero at Gunnison, Colorado and 47
below
zero at Point Lay, Alaska...at Birmingham Airport, the month of January
averaged over 8 degrees per day warmer than normal. Amazingly 19 days had
highs 60 or better and 5 days had 70 or warmer...if we do not get some much
colder weather in February, we could have a big invasion of bugs...Phoenix
completed 105 days in a row without a drop of rain yesterday. The official
forecast does not mention any rain at all for the next 7 days.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I get a lot of e-mails about Little Miss Molly
and they are all appreciated. Saundra and Buddy Ingram in Marion gave me
permission to use their story of owning 10 dogs and 2 cats. Saundra tells me
that "most are rescues of one sort or another. Several were found along the
roads and others were given to us or were from the SPCA or other shelters.
Our oldest dog is 14 or 15. Our oldest cat is 16. All are spayed/neutered.
We rescued our youngest dog from the side of the road this past summer and
he should be a little over one-year old now." Saundra says she wished others
would take care of their animals like they do. She said if even 80% of the
population that owned pets would spay/neuter, we would have no over
population. The Ingrams truly love their animals and they are like children.
Thanks to the Ingrams for letting me use their story. Life goes on.

Temperatures will warm nicely across Alabama today. Following a frosty
start, most communities will wind up in the mid 60s this afternoon with a
good supply of sunshine. Clouds will return quickly tonight, and we will
bring in a chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow as a quick moving
weather system passes through. Rainfall amounts of around 1/2 inch look
likely tomorrow, but severe weather is not expected.

A stronger storm will spin up over the Deep South on Friday, and another
round of showers and storms is likely Friday afternoon into Friday night. We
will be watching for the potential for strong to severe storms, especially
over east and southeast Alabama.

WEEKEND CHILL: A shot of much colder air invades the state on Saturday.
There will be lots of moisture wrapping around the back side of the big
storm system, and clouds will probably hang tough much of the day as
temperatures hold in the 36 to 43 degree range much of the day. Some light
rain or light snow seems very possible in the colder air. And, a strong
northwest wind will make the weather feel even colder.

By Sunday morning as the sky clears, temperatures should reach the mid 20s
as far south as Birmingham, with readings closer to 20 in the colder valleys
across North Alabama.

ALASKA COLD: The mercury has been well below zero in Fairbanks most of
January. The last day with a maximum temperature above zero was on January
12 when the high was 2 above. The high was above zero on only two other days
in the month (Jan 2 and 8). Yesterday's high was 20 below, following a
morning low of 26 below.

UKRAINE COLD: A total of 589 people have died in the Ukraine in the last 2
weeks due to exposure from severe cold.

MORE CHANGES AHEAD: The weather picture is not all that clear (excuse the
pun) for Alabama in the next several days. There will be some changes, but
you may see some additional changes in our forecast in the next 24 to 36
hours. The way it shapes up now is that we look for dry weather tonight and
Wednesday. Some scattered showers will arrive on Thursday. Still a chance of
showers on Friday and maybe a thunderstorm thrown in. If we had to pick a
time, we would say most of those showers including possibly a thunderstorm
would be late Friday and Friday night. Meanwhile, a cold front will come
sweeping through before daybreak Saturday. Saturday should be windy and
colder. We're using 45 for a high, but that could occur during the morning
hours.

There should be some scattered patches of cold light rain during the day
Saturday and we can't rule out some snow flurries late in the day and
Saturday night. Sunday looks like our coldest morning with temperatures well
down into the 20s.
Weather models often leave a bad taste in my mouth. They have flop-flipped
about a deep low pressure area passing just to the NW of Alabama. This
should lessen our risk of any severe thunderstorms in the Friday time frame,
although it is not totally out of the question.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: A few of the low temperatures in Alabama this morning
included 27 at Florence, 28 at Pinson, 29 at Alabaster, 31 at Anniston and
Huntsville, 30 in Tuscaloosa and 32 in Birmingham...the coldest in the lower
48 this morning was 2 below at Crane Lake and Orr, Minnesota...coldest in
Alaska was 51 below at Ft. Yukon...90 degrees sounds like summer and that is
what yesterday's high was in McAllen, Texas...there was no snow on the
ground this morning in Gatlinburg, but up in the mountains, 3 inches of new
snow on Newfound Gap and 8 inches on Mt. LeConte where the low this morning
was 16...3 inches on Stone Mountain in Johnson County in extreme NE
Tennessee...Phoenix going through day 104 in a row with not a drop of rain.
It is an all-time record that will be broken every day until it rains.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Got some quality playing time with Little Miss
Molly late last night and again this morning. In addition to the playing, we
sat on the couch together and did a bunch of loving. She absolutely loves to
have her head and tummy scratched and her back rubbed. She curled up on her
blanket right beside me and I rubbed her for about 30 minutes and she moaned
and groaned with delight. We played chase ball. She rapidly goes and gets
the ball, brings it back to me and slams it down on the floor near my feet.
That is her instruction for me to kick the ball again. When she turns the
corner chasing the ball from the living area into my office, the carpet
changes to a hardwood floor and she often skids for 2 or 3 feet when she
loses traction. Of course, I laugh. She often looks at me with an
embarrassed look when I laugh at her too much, but I cannot help it. Life
goes on.

...A Bright and Sunny Winter Day...

Today promises to be a beautiful mid-winter day, with maximum available
sunshine and temperatures very close to normal levels for the last day in
January. Dry weather will continue tomorrow, and a warming trend begins
tomorrow afternoon as the mercury rises into the 60s.
By tomorrow night, moist air begins to return to the state, and a few
showers could show up during the pre-dawn hours on Thursday. We will
forecast a chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm during the day
Thursday as an upper air impulse moves over the state.

A strong disturbance will move through late Friday and Friday night with
another round of showers and storms. Computer model data is not in good
agreement about the strength of this system, but there is some risk of
strong to severe storms here sometime between 4:00 p.m. Friday and midnight
Friday night if the stronger solutions happen to verify. Rainfall amounts
Thursday and Friday should be between one and two inches for most Alabama
communities.

THE WEEKEND: Following the Friday night thunderstorm action, a very deep and
cold upper trough is forecast to develop over the Deep South, which should
bring sharply colder temperatures on Saturday along with an icy wind.
Temperatures will struggle to reach the low to mid 40s if clouds linger much
of the day as we expect. A few snow flurries might even be found up in the
Tennessee Valley during the morning hours on Saturday.

STORM ALERT 2006: Our annual severe weather awareness tour kicks off
Thursday night in Hamilton at the Bevill State Auditorium. The show begins
at 7:00, and we strongly recommend you get there early to get a seat!
