Temperatures will warm nicely across Alabama today. Following a frosty
start, most communities will wind up in the mid 60s this afternoon with a
good supply of sunshine. Clouds will return quickly tonight, and we will
bring in a chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow as a quick moving
weather system passes through. Rainfall amounts of around 1/2 inch look
likely tomorrow, but severe weather is not expected.

A stronger storm will spin up over the Deep South on Friday, and another
round of showers and storms is likely Friday afternoon into Friday night. We
will be watching for the potential for strong to severe storms, especially
over east and southeast Alabama.

WEEKEND CHILL: A shot of much colder air invades the state on Saturday.
There will be lots of moisture wrapping around the back side of the big
storm system, and clouds will probably hang tough much of the day as
temperatures hold in the 36 to 43 degree range much of the day. Some light
rain or light snow seems very possible in the colder air. And, a strong
northwest wind will make the weather feel even colder.

By Sunday morning as the sky clears, temperatures should reach the mid 20s
as far south as Birmingham, with readings closer to 20 in the colder valleys
across North Alabama.

ALASKA COLD: The mercury has been well below zero in Fairbanks most of
January. The last day with a maximum temperature above zero was on January
12 when the high was 2 above. The high was above zero on only two other days
in the month (Jan 2 and 8). Yesterday's high was 20 below, following a
morning low of 26 below.

UKRAINE COLD: A total of 589 people have died in the Ukraine in the last 2
weeks due to exposure from severe cold.
