===================================================================

An unusual thing for July on this Saturday. A slow moving upper level
low over Mississippi is moving east and weakening with time. Ahead of
the low, a large area of light to moderate and sometimes briefly heavy
rain spread across the state during the morning hours. Rainfall
amounts have been generally light, aorund one half inch. But over
western Alabama, radar estimates indicate that a large area of three
quarter inch amounts occurred over Pickens, Tuscaloosa, SW Fayette and
Lamar Counties. Embedded in this area, an area of at least one inch
amounts covered southwestern Lamar County and much of Pickens County.
These amounts will grow into the afternoon, although the main rain
area seems to be shrinking with time.

Back in Mississippi, radar estimates show that some general amounts
over two inches occurred in the Starkville, West Point and Columbus
areas. Columbus AFB received 2.16 inches between midnight and 11 a.m.

SEVERE WEATHER THIS AFTERNOON: Areas south of Birmingham and
Tuscaloosa could see severe weather this afternoon, from southern
Sumter through southern Greene, Hale, Perry and into SW Chilton County
and points south. There is the possibility of a few brief tornadoes.

MOVING AHEAD: The low will track across North Central Alabama through
the evening hours. As the low passes, the precipitation will mostly
come to an end, although there could be a few showers overnight.
Moisture levels will not change with the passage of the low, which
will be key to the forecast.

Look for fog to form overnight, with high humidity, widespread wet
ground, light winds and clearing skies. That patchy fog will burn
off early on Sunday, leaving mostly sunny skies across the area. With
good low level moisture, widely scattered thunderstorms will form with
the heating of the day on Sunday, but coverage will be around 30-40
percent. Skies should clear Sunday night.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We evolve into a fairly typical summertime pattern
by Monday, and stay with it until midweek, with scattered showers and
thunderstorms developing during the late morning and afternoon hours,
diminishing during the evenings. Temperatures will be near normal,
with highs in the lower 90s and lows in the lower 70s. It looks
like things will change for the better again by Thursday, as a deep
trough of low pressure builds over the eastern United States. This
trough will allow an unusual July cool front dawdling down into the
area, accompanied by enhanced chances for showers and thunderstorms.
It looks like the best chances for North Central Alabama will come on
Friday, although the front could waver back and forth into the
weekend, keeping good rain chances nearby. We stay in a moist
summertime pattern into the following week, the week of the 16th also.

VOODOO LAND: As we slide past next weekend, it looks like the
Bermuda High will take up a position more near its namesake island
rather than hanging around just off the East Coast. We should see a
moist pattern with scattered PM storms each day.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is relatively quiet. An area of
disturbed weather off the East Cost shows no signs of development.
Thunderstorm activity associated with the tropical wave approaching
the Lesser Antilles has dissipated.

ON THIS DATE IN 1984: A 90 foot excursion boat carrying employees of
the SCI Corporation on an outing capsized during a severe thunderstorm
on the Tennessee River near Huntsville, AL, killing 11. The disaster
was caused by a microburst. Microbursts are usually associated with
airplane crashes, but they can overturn boats also.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Today's Weather History note relates to a town
that has been in the news a lot this year, after being virtually
destroyed by the first category 5 tornado since 1999, and the first
tornado to be rated as an EF5 on the new Enhanced Fujita scale. But
on this date back in 1987, some weird weather was noted at Greensburg
KS. The temperature was 75 degrees at 7am, soared to 95 degrees at
few minutes later and back to 86 by 8am. Dust devils and strange
clouds reportedly accompanied this strange fluctuation in temperature.
It likely was a heat burst, where rapidly sinking air from a dying
thunderstorm heated by compression, resulting in the rise in
temperature.

===================================================================

Perhaps 7/7/07 will live up to its advance billing as a lucky day, at
least here in Alabama with enhanced chances for showers and
thunderstorms across the area thanks to a slow moving upper low that
will be pinwheeling across the area today.

MUCH NEEDED RAINFALL: Many areas picked up much needed rainfall
yesterday afternoon and last night. I would estimate that about 50%
of the northern half of Alabama received rain. Again, the convective
nature of the activity meant that the distribution was not equal, with
some folks getting some impressive amounts. By early evening, I had
received over two inches at my house in Trussville, while just a few
miles away, J.B. received only one half inch. Meanwhile, less than a
couple of miles from me, a Skywatcher on the Jefferson/St. Clair
County line measured a whopping 3.35 inches.

WET SATURDAY? The presence of the upper low to the west and a
sagging front to the north today should give us an even better dose of
showers and thunderstorms today. Coverage today should be near 80
percent. Average rainfall amounts will be around three quarters of an
inch with some locally higher amounts over two inches.

SUNDAY: The rain chances diminish tomorrow, but I think they will
still be above normal. Coverage will be about 40-50 per cent
tomorrow. Not bad. We will still take it. With a little more
sunshine, temperatures will once again approach 90.

NEXT WEEK: We ebb back into a fairly typical summertime of scattered
afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms through midweek. The
GFS advertises the development of a strong trough of low pressure over
the eastern part of the country. This will spell another round of
enhanced rain chances in the Thursday-Friday time frame, perhaps
spilling over into Saturday. We can only hope.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Today's Weather History note relates to a town
that has been in the news a lot this year, after being virtually
destroyed by the first category 5 tornado since 1999, and the first
tornado to be rated as an EF% on the new Enhanced Fujita scale. But
on this date back in 1987, some weird weather was noted at Greensburg
KS. The temperature was 75 degrees at 7am, soared to 95 degrees at
few minutes later and back to 86 by 8am. Dust devils and strange
clouds reportedly accompanied this strange fluctuation in temperature.
It likely was a heat burst, where rapidly sinking air from a dying
thunderstorm heated by compression , resulting in the rise in
temperature.

================================================

WE ARE CHEERING FOR RAIN: And it looks as if we finally have
something to cheer about. Showers and thunderstorms formed again late
this morning—this time over the extreme north. They increased in
number by this afternoon, as they begin working their way slowly
toward the SE. Because of their slow movement, it is likely that
several communities in the Tennessee Valley received over an inch of
rain this morning.

We have something else to be encouraged over. We are focusing one of
our eyes toward the west, where showers and thunderstorms widespread
across Central Mississippi were working their way NE. This is part of
the very moist blanket of air that has covered the great State of
Texas far too long. This afternoon the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and much
of Central Texas were getting a break.

BACK HOME IN CENTRAL ALABAMA: We believe that by the time the
weekend is over, many communities in Central Alabama will get about 2
inches of rain. Not everybody, mind you, and some folks could get
more than that. The slow pace of the thunderstorms means that some
communities will get some very heavy rain. With clouds predominating
Saturday, our high temperature should only be about 87. The showers
and thunderstorms will become more scattered in nature by early next
week and we expect high temperatures to return to the lower 90s.

Those thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and last evening, dumped 2
inches of rain at Mobile and Moundville and over 1 inch at Muscle
Shoals Airport.

BEACH WEATHER: Lots and lots of folks are down on the white sand
enjoying an end of a July 4th weeklong holiday. They will have a good
chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday with highs
around 88. There will still be scattered ones Monday and Tuesday, if
they decide to extend their vacation.

THE WEST IN AN OVEN: I am sure that is what a lot of folks felt like
yesterday and again today. One statistic stands out. The 116 in Las
Vegas tied their all-time record high that was last recorded over 20
years ago. Their low this morning was 89. It was 127 in Death Valley
yesterday, 111 in Zion National Park, 120 in Needles. It was 118 at
Henderson just south of Las Vegas and also at the NWS office in
Vegas. However, Las Vegas airport is considered the station for
climat records.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With some thunder boomers again tonight
and tomorrow, Little Miss Molly will spend a lot of time under the
bed. We have a good friend in Hueytown that highly recommends
Acepromazine to give little dogs at such times. Her two small dogs,
Honey and Maxwell, stay calm as a cucumber during storms. We cannot
seem to remember to ask our vet for some when Molly goes in for check-
ups. Started a new adventure this morning. Switching to coffee
straight black. I have never used sugar—just cream. The adventure
lasted 30 minutes. Life goes on.....

...Rain Chances Going Up...

A plume of deeper moisture will move into Alabama from the west today,
and a surface front at the same time will approach from the north.
This combination should lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms
statewide, with most of them firing up this afternoon and tonight. The
chance of any one neighborhood getting wet today is about one in
three, and the heavier storms will bring heavy downpours and lots of
lightning. Most of the showers and storms will come from about 1:00
until 9:00 p.m., but in this kind of airmass we really can't rule out
a morning shower in spots.

THE WEEKEND: We will forecast a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms tomorrow with a copious amount of moisture in the lower
part of the atmosphere, coupled with the front to the north, and a
disturbance just west of Alabama in the upper atmosphere. This could
be a day of beneficial rain for many communities, with average amounts
of one inch. Some places could see more than that where stronger
storms develop. And, the moist air will linger on Sunday, so we will
maintain the chance of scattered showers and storms, especially during
the afternoon hours. Between today and Sunday, some spots might even
see around three inches of rain. That is a real blessing for a state
that remains in a serious drought.

AT THE BEACH: There will be scattered showers and storms along the
Gulf coast from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores over the weekend,
but a few intervals of sunshine between the showers. The high along
the immediate coast will be from 86 to 89 degrees. No problems with
tropical storms or hurricanes as the Atlantic basin remains quiet.

DROUGHT MONITOR: Birmingham's official rain total for the year is
11.91", and the deficiency is a whopping 17.91". Not a drop of rain
has been measured so far in July. The rain deficit for the year is
21.76" at Tuscaloosa, and 20.41" at Anniston. On the positive side,
the Birmingham Water Works reports that Lake Purdy is now at a safe
level again, just below 78 percent of full pool. Lake Purdy is a major
supply of drinking water for Birmingham, and is located between Leeds
and Cahaba Heights. It is located on the Little Cahaba River.

BIG TIME HEAT: Yesterday's high in Las Vegas was 116 degrees; Phoenix
soared to 115. Triple digits were seen as far north as Spokane,
Washington and Salt Lake City, Utah, where both cities reported 101
degrees. The hottest place in the nation was Death Valley, California
with an amazing 127 degrees. That is only seven degrees away from the
all time record high for the U.S., 134 degrees, recorded there on July
10, 1913. Death Valley is the lowest spot in the Western Hemisphere.

ALABAMA RAIN: Afternoon storms over northern Hale County produced
2.32" of rain at Moundville yesterday afternoon. A shower in Walker
County brought 0.37" to Carbon Hill.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Even though this is summer, there are times when
a cool front is brave enough to try to cross into our territory.
Sometimes they make it, but more often not. They give up and sit down
somewhere north of Central Alabama. It is questionable how far south
the current front will get. We are going to make an assumption that
it will do good to reach the Birmingham area. It might even stall in
the Tennessee Valley. For heaven's sake, you ask, what does all that
mean? It means an improved chance of getting some showers and
thunderstorms over the next two or three days. We will also be
watching for some extra moisture spreading into the area from the
Wetlands of Louisiana and Texas. There are indications that the upper-
level low, that had parked over Texas, may move NE somewhat and pull
in some moisture with it. One weather prog has it centered over North
Arkansas late in the weekend.

We do not expect many showers and thunderstorms for the rest of today
and tonight. Some scattered ones were forming, mainly over the west
and SW. Parts of SW Alabama have received some good rain amounts the
last two days, including over 3 inches at Mobile. Brookley Field,
near downtown Mobile, was drenched with 2.70 yesterday alone.

The chance of getting wet looks better starting later tomorrow and
extending through the weekend. During the next 4 to 5 days, some
parts of North Alabama could get as much as 2 inches of rain. Across
Central Alabama, it would be more like 1.50.

AT THE BEACH: For the remainder of the holiday week, high
temperatures will be 90 to 92. There will be some afternoon showers
and thunderstorms each day, but none of the days will be an all-day
rain.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The suspicious area way out in the Atlantic does
not look as promising now. It is getting into an area more unfriendly
for tropical development. We will keep an eye on it, but only one eye.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Corpus Christi an amazing 3.31 inches of rain
in the last 24 hours bringing their total for the first four days of
July to an amazing 14 inches. Houston got over an inch yesterday. In
Tulsa, there was 2.61 inches—another area that needs no rain. Are we
looking at some record heat in the Desert Southwest? Reno could break
their all-time record today. It was 126 in Death Valley yesterday and
it should be hotter today. They hold the all-time record for the USA
of 134. That could possibly be in jeopardy. Even Flagstaff, in the
North Arizona high country, had a record 96 yesterday. Cool spot this
morning was Stanley, Idaho with 42.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly at sacked out at
11:00 last night stretched out across the foot of the bed and already
sound asleep. Kaboom! Three times someone set off some fireworks
across the hedgerow from our house. That little girl stood straight
up, dove off the bed, ran into the other bedroom and scooted under
the bed. That is her favorite hiding place, when thunderstorms,
fireworks or vacuum cleaners are anywhere nearby. I vacuumed the
entire house yesterday, so she spent quite a bit of time under there.
Tried to console her, but live goes on.....

...Afternoons Getting Hotter..

Look for hotter afternoons across Alabama for the next several days;
we expect the temperature to peak somewhere between 90 and 95 degrees
on a daily basis through the weekend. The chance of rain for the
northern half of the state today will remain small, as a relatively
dry airmass remains in place. Most of the showers and storms should
remain over the southern half of the state, although a few widely
scattered storms could show up over the western third of the state as
well.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: A surface front is slowly drifting down in
our direction, and that could serve to enhance the chance of scattered
showers and storms by tomorrow afternoon. A few might even drift down
into the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama tonight. In
addition to the surface front, the disturbance that has been over
Texas is forecast to weaken, but move in our general direction. This
means that we will have a much better chance of scattered showers and
thunderstorms tomorrow through Sunday. As usual, rainfall distribution
will be uneven, but some spots could receive one to two inches on
these three days. There will be some decent intervals of sunshine
along the way, and afternoon highs will remain generally in the low to
mid 90s.

Next week, a moist, maritime tropical airmass will linger across
Alabama, and the daily heating process should lead to scattered,
mainly afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Another words, pretty
routine weather for July in Alabama.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The tropical wave in the Atlantic, about 1000 miles
east of the Windward Islands, is hanging on by a thread this morning.
Most of the deep convection around the wave has vanished, but the
feature is still identifiable as it moves steadily to the west. Very
dry air in the path of the system should prevent it from growing into
a major system, and it could dissipate before it reaches the Lesser
Antilles. Elsewhere, the Atlantic basin remains rather quiet at this
time.

AT THE BEACH: You will have to dodge scattered showers and
thunderstorms along the coast through the weekend, but there will be
intervals of sunshine each day. Afternoon highs along the immediate
coast will be in the 87 to 90 degree range, and the sea surface
temperatures remain in the mid 80s. Our SKYCAM site at the Phoenix
All-Suites in Gulf Shores yesterday recorded only 0.02" during the day
thanks to a passing shower. Heavier rain fell to the west, where
Mobile picked up 1.73". Mobile County was under a flash flood warning
at one point during the early afternoon hours.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The Desert Southwest continues to sizzle. Highs
yesterday included 114 at Las Vegas and 116 at Phoenix. The hottest
temperature in the nation was 126 degrees at Death Valley, California.
West Yellowstone, Montana dropped to a frosty 32 degrees early
yesterday morning.

THERMOMETER WILL RISE AGAIN: Another relatively pleasant day across
Alabama and it is good that it came on July 4. Not only do we have
drier air over North and Central Alabama, but the afternoon
temperatures are more user friendly. Most temperatures were in the
80s this afternoon, although some places over on the west side of the
state could reach 90 before the day is over. For the remainder of
this afternoon and this evening, we believe any showers or
thunderstorms will be limited to about the south third of the state.
This bodes well for fireworks displays this evening.

TONIGHT'S FIREWORKS: The chance of an isolated shower or storm is so
small, that we took it out of the forecast. Official sunset is 8:01,
but it does not get totally dark until later and I believe most of
the fireworks kick off around 9:00 p.m., including Fire on the
Mountain in Birmingham. By that time, the temperature should be a
relatively comfortable 80 degrees. Bad news for parts of the
northeast. A Tornado Watch is posted for this afternoon for places
like Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: This is July—our leading thunderstorm month of
the year. Even though we are still in a major drought, we cannot rule
out a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. We will mention
an isolated storm late in the day Thursday. After that, all the way
through the weekend, we are looking for scattered mostly afternoon
and evening showers and thunderstorms. This is not expected to be a
widespread rain event, so do not look for much drought relief. A weak
cold front is expected to sneak into the upper part of the southeast
Friday morning. Even though there is a welcome sign at the Alabama/
Tennessee border, the front will be hardly noticeable, even if it
does get into North Alabama.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The low-pressure area 1,200 miles east of the
Southern Windward Islands has become better defined. There is still a
chance of tropical development until it runs into unfriendly upper-
level winds in the next couple of days.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Corpus Christi has already received 12.14
inches of rain for the first three days of July. An additional 3.44
inches overnight at Georgetown in South Texas, 1.53 inches at San
Antonio and 2.02 at the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport. A blistering 121
degrees was forecast this afternoon and tomorrow in the vicinity of
Hoover Dam. It was 119 in Death Valley yesterday and 118 at Bullhead
City, Arizona. Extremes across Arizona included the 118 at Bullhead
City and 39 this morning at Grand Canyon Airport.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: On a day like this, I do a lot of
thinking of the past and how thankful I am to live in this great
country. I am thankful that I was able to work in weather since the
days of kudzu and have had great supervisors for the entire run.
Thankful for loads and loads of good friends. And, oh, yes, there is
a certain little 9-pound animal named Miss Molly that has really
given me tons of enjoyment for nearly five years. She always keeps a
step ahead of me. Last night I took a power nap and did not awaken
until 11:00 p.m. That meant she had a later than usual outdoor
bathroom break. She realized she had missed a ballgame, so when I
went to bed, she had jumped up on my bed, curled up on my pillow with
one of her balls. I got the message and we played ball until our
tongues were hanging out. Life goes on.....

...A Mostly Dry Fourth of July..

Relatively dry air covers much of North Alabama this morning; meaning
that most backyard barbecues and the big outdoor fireworks shows won't
be bothered by showers or thunderstorms. While we can't totally rule
out the risk of a few showers or storms on radar around here this
afternoon, they should be few and far between across the northern
counties of Alabama. The best chance of a shower or storm will come
over the southern quarter of Alabama, where a decent pool of moist air
lingers. We are forecasting a high today somewhere between 90 and 94
degrees for most neighborhoods. Tomorrow's weather should be about the
same on a statewide basis.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Moist air should drift northward late this
week, and with the approach of a surface front we expect a general
increase in the number of afternoon showers and thunderstorms Friday
through Sunday, but they will be scattered and rainfall distribution
won't be very even. Afternoon highs will remain mostly in the low 90s
over the weekend, about where we should be in early July in Alabama.
That surface front should stall out just north of here before having a
chance to bring any big change to drier air.

TROPICS: A tropical wave continues moving through the open Atlantic,
about half-way between the coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles.
There is some chance this system could become a tropical depression in
coming days, but it will be fighting a large area of very dry air that
currently covers the Atlantic basin, so rapid development is not
likely. If by chance this thing becomes a tropical storm, the name
will be Chantal (we don't name them, we just forecast them!).

AT THE BEACH: You will have to dodge a few scattered showers and
storms on a daily basis
along the Gulf coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores, but there will
be some decent intervals of sunshine along the way. Afternoon highs
along the immediate coast will be in the 87 to 90 degree range, with
low 90s inland. The sea surface temperature remains mostly in the mid
80s.

A NICE BREAK FROM THE HEAT: Clouds lingered much longer than expected
yesterday across Alabama as low level moisture was trapped in a zone
about 2,000 to 6,000 feet off the ground. The clouds kept temperatures
very comfortable for a July day in Alabama; the high at our SKYCAM
site atop Lookout Mountain, overlooking the city of Gadsden, was only
78 degrees. The high at Fort Payne was 81, and Birmingham's high was
88 degrees.

SEVERE WEATHER IN MOBILE: A severe thunderstorm produced major damage
at a Walmart in Mobile around 2:30 yesterday near the intersection of
I-65 and Dauphin Street. Six people were injured and taken to local
hospitals; the injuries were not believed to be life threatening. A
number of people captured images of a small tornado coming from the
base of the thunderstorm in the area. The storm was only briefly
severe, however, and there was no warning in effect at the time.

MOSTLY DRY FOR THE FOURTH: You have heard us speak of the
wedge many times over. It is one of those things that can make or
break a forecast and today it pretty much destroyed our high
temperature forecast. The cooler air migrating in from the east
brought some low clouds. We did not expect it to penetrate this far
westward into Alabama. However, it is a nice break from the heat.
Temperatures should start heating up again tomorrow, although not
exceptionally hot. By Thursday, and on into the weekend, highs should
be in the low to mid 90s. We believe that showers and thunderstorms
will be fairly scarce Wednesday and Thursday, maybe increasing some
by Saturday. The further you go into SW Alabama, the better the chance.

LOOKING CLOSELY AT JULY 4: We think the chance of an afternoon or
evening thunderstorm, to spoil barbecue or fireworks, is extremely
small. Almost all areas will remain dry. We look for a high of 91. By
the time the evening fireworks kick off around 9:00 p.m., it should
be a relatively comfortable 78 degrees.

HOLIDAY AT THE BEACH: A much better chance of getting wet along the
Alabama/NW Florida coast than here in Central Alabama—about a 1 in 2
chance tomorrow. High temperatures will be 88 to 90. There will be
some showers and thunderstorms daily on through the weekend. The SST
(Sea Surface Temperature) just offshore is about 85.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Way out in the Central Atlantic, there is a low-
pressure area associated with a tropical wave. It may become a little
better organized. The NHC thinks it could possibly become a tropical
depression in the next day or so as it moves west 10 to 15.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Seems as if that upper air low-pressure area
has taken out homestead exemption over Texas. It is a continuing
story of far too much rain. Corpus Christi got over 9 inches of rain
in 24 hours Sunday and Monday. Ft. Worth got 2.42 inches yesterday.
At the Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport, 12.23 inches of rain has fallen in
the last 31 days and DFW has now built up a 14-inch surplus for the
year so far. Meanwhile, the Birmingham deficit was moving toward 18
inches. At Birmingham Airport, only 11.91 inches so far this year.
Last year we had received 34.50 inches by July 3. There was an 81-
degree range in temperature across California yesterday, from 38 at
Lake Tahoe to 119 in Death Valley. The relative humidity dropped as
low as 1% in the Utah/Arizona desert yesterday. That is almost
unbelievable.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have decided to rename our walking
track to the Miss Molly Autobahn. I never know what to expect. Today
it was full speed ahead, as fast as my little legs could go. All of a
sudden she stops on a dime to do some sniffing. She surely needs a
brake reline job by now. I try to let her be boss on the two half-
mile walks each day. I have had to put on brakes so quickly that my
shoe soles are getting thin. She will stop and sniff every little
part of a weed, taking one or two minutes, and then accelerate like a
rocket as if she is headed for Chattanooga. I am amazed that she can
run with her front feet like a horse, while her back feet are loping
like a kangaroo. I tried that, but I cannot do it. Oh, well, I learn
something every day from that little girl. Just being around her as
relaxing as taking a sedative. Life goes on.....

...Afternoon Storms Thinning Out..

Many Alabamians are gearing up for a big Independence Day celebration
tomorrow, and it looks like most barbecues and fireworks shows will go
on without having to deal with thunderstorms. Now, having said that,
it is almost impossible for us to rule out the chance of a storm on a
July afternoon in Alabama, but drier air slipping into Alabama from
the north means that any afternoon showers and storms though the
mid-week period will be few and far between. And, you know it will be
hot. We are expecting highs in the low to mid 90s today, with mid 90s
tomorrow and Thursday. Parts of West Alabama might even reach the
upper 90s. The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow evening at
fireworks time (around 9:00) is only about one in ten.
LOOKING AHEAD: Moisture levels should slowly increase late in the
week, and scattered afternoon showers and storms may become a little
more numerous by Friday and the weekend. Afternoon highs will remain
in the low to mid 90s. And, we are expecting rainfall and temperatures
to be near normal through mid-July as the most intense heat remains
over the Southwest U.S.
AT THE BEACH: Fairly routine summer weather can be expected along the
central Gulf coast through the rest of the week; about 6 to 8 hours of
sunshine each day with a few scattered showers and thunderstorms from
time to time. The high each afternoon along the immediate coast will
be in the 87 to 90 degree range, and the sea water temperature at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was a very warm 86 degrees. We
should also point out that the Atlantic basin remains quiet and
tropical storm formation is not expected through the rest of this
week.
ONE PERCENT HUMIDITY: Some of the driest air I have noticed in a long
time over the cooking Southwest U.S. late yesterday afternoon. These
observations were taken at 5 pm, MDT:
* Moab, Utah, temperture 104, dew point +1, humidity 1% (yes, 1%!)
* Bryce Canyon, Utah, 87 degrees, dew point -2, humidity 3%
* Grand Canyon Airport (Ariz.) temperature 93, dew point zero, humidity 3%
MONDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals from across Alabama yesterday included .90"
at Inverness, .79" at Roanoke, .78" at the ABC 33/40 Studio in
Riverchase, .61" at the SKYCAM site atop the Daniel Building on 20th
Street in downtown Birmingham, and .45"at Cordova,
ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Some big time rain totals and flooding
problems along the middle Texas coast yesterday; the rain total at
Corpus Christi was 9.86". The total in Houston was 1.11". The crank is
cranking up a notch over the Southwest U.S,; the high yesterday in
Phoenix was 112; hottest spot was Death Valley, California with 119.

STORMS MORE SCARCE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS: It appears that the great
Alabama countryside had more of it getting wet Sunday than any one
day in a long time. Does that mean our major drought is over?
Absolutely not. It will take a whole series of days like Sunday to
really make a great dent in the drought. I still think and almost
guarantee that we will still be showing a rain deficiency when we say
Happy New Year again. A couple of tropical depressions could solve
that, but the mathematical chance of getting two of those this
hurricane season is small.

We actually had a Flash Flood Warning for DeKalb County Sunday
afternoon. As much as 4 inches of rain fell around Ft. Payne. Here
are a few other notable amounts:

2.64 inches at UAH in Huntsville
1.70 Holt Lock and Dam (east side of Tuscaloosa)
1.68 Ashville
2.51 Auburn

We watched on radar Sunday afternoon as a number of outflow
boundaries paraded across the area. Depending on where those slept
overnight could be the main focus of storms later this afternoon and
tonight. We think the better chance will be over Central and South
Alabama, but that is not sealed in concrete, steel or titanium. We do
believe, over the next several days, storms will be scarce. For
Independence Day, we are forecasting only isolated ones during the
afternoon and a high of 94. We should be in the 90s all week.

WEATHER FORECAST TERMS: Even when we are off duty, weather humans
occasionally prowl the world looking for interesting weather. In
doing so, I was reading the official NWS forecast for Deadhorse,
Alaska last week. It said "mostly sunny tonight." That was not a
typo, because they are still having 24 hours of sunlight. When I was
still in the Weather Service, when we had a clear sky and a full
moon, I sure was tempted to say, "Mostly mooney tonight or partly
mooney." I never did get up enough nerve. Enough of this. On to more
serious things. The Dallas/Ft. Worth area still expecting a lot of
showers and thunderstorms. Flash Flood Watch in effect. The forecast
for Gila Bend and Apache Junction, Arizona calling for highs of
115-120 for July 4. Joplin, Missouri received 17.12 inches of rain in
June.

DATELINE: COFFEEVILLE: Kansas, that is. There is a Coffeeville in
SW Alabama. Much of the Kansas city is under water. It is located in
SE Kansas and it is about the same size as our own Albertville. Even
the mayor's home was totally submerged. Making the tragedy more
serious is the 22,000 gallons of oil mixing with the water when the
local oil refinery flooded. That oily water is going downstream into
a large lake in NE Oklahoma.

MY TINY CORNER OF THEWORLD: Even though I weigh 27 times as much as
Little Miss Molly, her influence on me is much greater. The last two
days I have been very busy weather-wise with radio broadcasts and
helping with the Blog. When I finally walked out of my weather office
late last night, she came roaring out of the side room kicking one of
her balls across the living area while she was still holding another
one in her mouth. She blocked my path, looked up and me and smiled
with the ball still in hr mouth. No way I could escape. Huge ballgame
ensued. Life goes on.....
