...Northwest Flow...

Are you just loving this weather? Dewpoints in the 50s in early
August? Sunny skies. No storms around. A light northerly breeze?
Sure, temperatures are warm out there this afternoon, but humidities
are low, so it actually feels comfortable.

THAT OLD NORTHWEST FLOW: The northwest flow giveth, and it taketh
away. While famous for its generally fine weather, it is also known
for throwing batches of thunderstorms our way. We can imagine that
happening in this forecast, perhaps as early as late on Sunday Then
again early in the week. And this unusual upper level pattern looks
like it might be with us for much of the coming week, so we will have
to keep storms in the forecast just about every day, since timing
these ripples in the atmospheric flow is tough. Temperatures will be
at or just below normal depending on the daily cloud cover and
rainfall prospects.

RECORD LOWS BY MORNING: The direr air allows for not only comfortable
humidity readings, but also for comfortable morning lows. Expect a
repeat of this morning's lows on Sunday morning, except that it might
even be a degree or two cooler. This means that we will be
approaching record territory by morning. Temperatures will be in the
upper 50s early Sunday across North and Central Alabama. The record
low at Birmingham for August 10th is 60F. We will be close. Other
record lows for tomorrow morning wil include 56F at Anniston, 60F at
Tuscaloosa and 62F at Montgomery.

CHECK ON THE TROPICS: No real threats in the tropical Atlantic at
this time. We could see development along our old front off the South
Atlantic coast of the U.S., but it might not even become tropical and
it would most certainly head out to sea to the northeast. The
Intertropical Convergence Zone of the eastern Atlantic is becoming
quite nervous and the GFS hints that a tropical cyclone will form by
midweek between Africa and the islands of the Caribbean. Recent model
runs have depicted this system brushing the Leewards before the system
meanders toward Florida as a rather insignificant system. But a
hundred different scenarios will ensure over the next few days as this
situation unfolds.

REPEAT OF 2004-2005? A persistent trough of low pressure in the mid-
levels of the atmosphere up at about 18,000 feet has been parked just
off the East Coast of the United States for awhile now. That is the
important steering level for tropical cyclones. It is unclear what
will happen as we head into the second half of August, but let's hope
the trough stays in place as much as possible. NOAA has updated their
season forecast: 14-18 named storms, 7-10 hurricanes and 3-6 major
hurricanes. A persistent easterly flow will steer disturbances off
the coast of Africa. Sea surface temperatures are warmer than the
normal. Weak wind shear will allow systems to strengthen.

ONE YEAR AGO: Alabama continued in the midst of a major heat wave
and drought. The 103F at the Birmingham Airport was the hottest in
the Magic City since August 19, 1999. It was the third straight day of
100 degree readings at Birmingham. It was 103F at Tuscaloosa (a
record) and 105F at Pinson. Montgomery topped out at 104F. A large
part of the northern half of the state continued in an exceptional
drought, the highest category on the drought scale.

...Oh, What A Beautiful Morning...

There's a bright golden haze on the meadow, There's a
bright golden haze on the meadow, The corn is as high as an elephant's
eye, An' it looks like it's climbin' clear up to the sky. Oh, what a
beautiful mornin', Oh, what a beautiful day. I got a beautiful feelin'
Ev'rything's goin' my way. Certainly in the weather department.
Well, maybe everything except that stuff about the elephant's eye and
climbin' to the sky. But this morning's clear skies, low humidities
and near record low temperatures are wonderful…

RECORD LOWS BY SUNDAY MORNING: The record low for this
morning at Birmingham is 54F, so that record is safely intact. But
the record for August 10th in the Magic City is 60F, and that could be
in some jeopardy. Other records for Sunday morning include 60F at
Tuscaloosa, 62F at Montgomery and 56F at Anniston. The normally
cooler spots will likely be well into the 50s. Quite refreshing for
August in Alabama.

FORECAST RATIONALE: Double barreled high pressure centers are near
Paducah, Kentucky and Lynchburg, Virginia this morning. This high
pressure and an anomalous northerly flow aloft are responsible for our
fall like weather. The northwest flow is a double edged sword for us
in Alabama. It can give us fine or foul weather, depending on your
perspective. It can mean fair weather, generally mild temperatures in
summer and low humidity. But it can also trigger thunderstorm
complexes well to our northwest that migrate towards us here in
Alabama. The GFS model has been persistent in depicting the
development of such a complex later today that will slide our way
tomorrow. It could bring a powerful complex of storms to parts of the
state during the late afternoon and overnight. That northwesterly
flow should be with us for much of the coming week. This means the
possibility of more showers and storms until the end of the week.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is relatively quiet at
this time, but I think that is about to change. A non-tropical low is
forecast to develop in the western Atlantic on the frontal boundary
that pushed off the South Atlantic coast yesterday. The Intertropical
Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, is going to be on the nervous side for the
next few days over the eastern Atlantic. The global models hint that
at least one, perhaps two tropica cyclones could form over the
Atlantic between Africa and the islands in the coming week. Initial
indications are that they could move north of the islands. The
Bermuda High is expected to be fairly far to the east with a trough
over the eastern U.S. as you know. This would tend to protect the
U.S. mainland. These may be the first volleys in a series of systems
that will develop over the Atlantic through the second half of the
month into next month as we enter an active time in the tropics.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: The temperature reached 100F for
the first time in history in Britain as Europe continued to bake in
its worst heat wave ever. The thermometer registered 100F at Heathrow
airport to set the all time record for the country. Germany also
broke its high temperature record with a reading of 105F at Roth in
Bavaria. The Pope asked people to pray for rain as wildfires
blackened parts of Italy, Portugal and other European nations.

...More Rain Early In The Week...

A TOUCH OF SEPTEMBER: When I stepped outside early this morning to
pick up my most valued morning paper and again at midday to get the
mail, I took an ultra deep breath of nice fresh air. I briefly closed
my eyes and had a flashback to DeSoto Falls and DeSoto State Park, a
drive up the Paint Rock River valley or sitting on the deck at the
restaurant at Mt. Cheaha State Park and looking at all the autumn
scenery. Then I slapped myself and now I am back to reality, so we
will discuss the weather at hand.

Yes, yes, yes, I know 63 percent of you (my estimate) love summer
better than any other time. I respect your opinion. But at least there
was a nice touch of September this morning and our relatively
comfortable temperatures will continue through the weekend. Indeed,
the dew point (one of our main indicators) will stay in the 50s all
day tomorrow when so often in August they are in the 70s. We look for
near total sunshine all of Saturday and most of Sunday. The old
thermometer is going to dip into the upper 50s in some of those
traditional cool spots in NE Alabama
tonight, so enjoy. The weather will do a fairly quick turn around.

NEXT RAIN: Moisture will quickly return to the area. Some models say
a few showers will show up Sunday night. I chose to ignore that, but
there will be a nice return of showers and thunderstorms on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday. There is a decent chance that this will be a
good rain event and here in Central Alabama some places may get
between 1 and 2 inches of rain between Monday and Wednesday.

STORMS YESTERDAY: Lots of damage, but no major structural damage. It
was mostly trees and power lines in a number of counties. Some big
rain amounts, too. We list five of the heavier amounts:

1.83 Riverchase at the ABC 33/40 Studios
2.53 Daphne near the coast
3.10 Fairhope
1.60 Scrougout in NE Etowah County
1.43 Bessemer

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: New England and the Northeast are having a very wet
year with frequent intrusions of thunderstorms and even a few
tornadoes and flooding rains. A big glob of thunderstorms moved into
Maine early this morning dumping nearly 4 inches on Durham and 3.20 at
Saco. Numerous roads were closed. Over on the coast, the famous L. L.
Bean complex was taking on water. Hottest temperature in the good old
USA yesterday was again in Death Valley with 119. Chilly spots this
morning were Hibbing, Minnesota with 42 and 35 at several locations in
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am looking for a nice break tonight
and Saturday with no thunderstorms looking over my shoulder. This
evening, I am going to sit down in front of the TV with a pot of
coffee and enjoy the opening of the Olympics. I will be sure and take
Molly on a forced bathroom break before it begins. Then I will cuddle
with her and, during commercial breaks, even have a 3-minute ballgame.
Big ballgame scheduled with her tomorrow.ames was real considerate to
include a Miss Molly category on the 33/40 Blog. I try not to abuse
it, but this will be very special. The loss of a pet is not like a
family member. It is still very hard.

...A Breath of Fresh Air...

THE HEAT BACKS OFF A BIT: Drier, continental air rolls into the
northern half of Alabama today, setting the stage for a rather
comfortable August day. Despite a sunny sky, the high will be only in
the 87 to 90 degree range, and dewpoints dropping to near 60 will keep
humidity values low. And, the dry air will also mean rather cool
nights over the weekend; most places will drop into the low 60s early
tomorrow and Sunday, and there is a good chance the normally cooler
spots will reach the mid to upper 50s. The record low for tomorrow
morning (August 9) is 54 degrees, set in 1976; that record seems safe.
But, the record low for Sunday (August 10) is 60, set in 1953, and we
just might make a run at that. Sure nice to be talking about record
low potential, unlike August of last year when we were making runs at
record highs on a number of afternoons.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Tomorrow will remain dry, but will adjust the
forecast a bit and introduce the chance of a shower or thunderstorm
late Sunday afternoon as moisture returns. Highs over the weekend will
be pretty close to 90 degrees. We will maintain the chance of
scattered showers and storms into the first few days of next week as
another front approaches; this one will probably hang up somewhere
just north of here.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Tomorrow will be a mostly sunny day along the
coast from Pamana City to Gulf Shores, highs along the immediate coast
will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. A few scattered showers
and storms will return Sunday and Monday.

TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE: The Atlantic basin is very quiet, and
tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.
Interesting to note NOAA upgraded their hurricane season outlook
yesterday; they are now projecting an 85 percent probability of an
above-normal season – up from 65 percent in May. The updated outlook
includes a 67 percent chance of 14 to 18 named storms, of which seven
to 10 are expected to become hurricanes, including three to six major
hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher on the Saffir-Simpson
Scale. The forecast team at Colorado State University made a similar
upgrade a few days ago.

STRONG SUMMER STORMS: Quite a storm at our weather office at ABC 33/40
in Riverchase yesterday; the rain total was 1.83"; most of that
falling in only 30 minutes. We also measured a wind gust of 51 mph
from that storm, which would go on to knock down trees and power lines
over the eastern half of Shelby County. Other rain totals yesterday
included .77" at Jemison, .47" at Alabaster, and .41" at Concord. A
strong thunderstorm over Tuscaloosa County knocked down a 120 foot
tower near Echols Middle School in Northport.

EXTREMES: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 119 degrees. Coldest place was Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska with 30
degrees. The high in Fairbanks was only 56 as the Alaska "year without
a summer" continues.

...A Nice Break After the Storms...

LESS HUMID OVER THE WEEKEND: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been in
effect for about the north half of Alabama since late morning. We have
seen a number of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and Significant Weather
Alerts, also, quite a few reports of damage. We have not seen any
significant reports of structural damage. It has been mostly trees and
power lines. Probably an exception is in the Northport area about 1:00
this afternoon when a 120-foot radio tower was blown down. It was
located about ½ mile south of the intersection of Highway 69 and US-82
or about 1 mile ESE of Northport.

These storms have brought an abrupt drop in temperature with many
places in West and North Alabama dropping from the 90s to the 70s in
just a few minutes. It is near certain that we will hear of some 1-
inch rain amounts before the day is over.

One of the main ingredients causing these storms today was a cold
front trying to push its way into the upper part of the Southeast
States. The front was draped across Southern Tennessee this afternoon.
By tomorrow morning, the front should be down in Central or even South
Alabama where it will stall near the coast and start back northward.

Latest indications are that it will come back north quick enough,
bringing Gulf humidity with it, for us to see a few showers or storms
as early as Sunday afternoon. Originally, we thought Sunday would be
completely dry and less humid.

After the storms end late tonight, look for some very pleasant weather
tomorrow and Saturday. The old dew point, a key indicator of how humid
it is, will fall into the upper 50s by tomorrow afternoon and stay in
the 50s all day Saturday. You will be sure and notice the lower
humidity, especially compared to what we have experienced the last
several weeks. Drier air cools much better than moist air, so we are
sticking with our forecast for lows in the low 60s over the weekend.
An excellent chance that a few of our traditional cool spots in NE
Alabama will have about 58. Broomtown, Scrougout, Ft. Payne and Valley
Head come to mind.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Overall, we must say that Tropical Storm Dolly
brought more good news than bad. She caused a wide swatch of Central
Texas to receive some very beneficial rain with some of it over 5
inches. Elsewhere in the Atlantic Basin, a tropical wave was
approaching the NW Bahamas this afternoon. It was not very exciting
and the National Hurricane Center does not expect for it to develop.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: 119 in Death Valley yesterday was the hottest. That
blistering desert outpost has been a hotspot in the USA more days this
summer than anyone else. Cool spots this morning 42 at Stanley, Idaho
and 32 at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. Anchorage only got up to 65
yesterday and a low of 46 this morning as they continue with an
exceptionally cool summer.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am completely blown away how hundreds
of people have fallen in love with my little puppy, Little Miss Molly,
simply by reading this short story each day. There was an outpouring
of extra emails after I mentioned a person suffering through the loss
of a dog a few days ago. Last night I got the most amazing response to
the column in the entire 5 years I have written it. The email was four
pages long and came from Dothan in SE Alabama. I want to run some
excerpts from it after getting permission. Another gentleman has
already given me permission to run his story. I may get all of this
together and post it on the ABC 33/40 Blog. James was real considerate
to include a Miss Molly category on the 33/40 Blog. I try not to abuse
it, but this will be very special. The loss of a pet is not like a
family member. It is still very hard.

ABC 33/40 E-Forecast

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Morning Edition For Thursday August 7, 2008
===================================================================
ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

Visit http://www.al1call.com for more information.

...Strong Storms Likely Later Today...

WEATHER CHANGES COMING: We actually don't see too many weather changes
around here this time of the year, but it sure looks like a rare
August cold front will have enough push to make it all the way down
into the northern Gulf of Mexico during the next 36 hours. That front
will bring a marked increase in the number of showers and
thunderstorms across our state this afternoon and tonight, and with a
little upper air support involved, we will be on the lookout for
strong to severe thunderstorms. The primary threat with all summer
storms is lightning, but some of the storms could also produce
localized areas of damaging straight line winds, and some small hail.
Most of the showers and storms should come at some point between 3:00
p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Some communities could see over one inch of rain
with the heavier downpours, but rain distribution is not very even
during these kind of summer events.

COOLER NIGHTS AHEAD: As the front pushes deep into South Alabama
tomorrow, drier and slightly cooler air will filter into the northern
half of the state. Even with a good supply of sunshine, we are
forecasting a high of only 89 degrees tomorrow along with lower
humidity levels. The dry air means no chance of rain tomorrow, and the
weekend will be rain-free as well. And, another benefit of dry air is
cooler nights. We should drop down into the low 60s early Saturday and
Sunday morning, and it likely that some of the cooler spots will visit
the 50s. A nice preview of fall here in the hottest time of the year.
Moisture will slowly return next week, and it looks like we will need
to bring back the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms by
Tuesday and Wednesday.

TYPICAL ALABAMA HEAT: The official highs in Birmingham for the first
six days of August (in order): 91, 94, 95, 94, 95, 96. That makes for
an average of 94.1 degrees, which is just about what we expect in
early August. This is usually our hottest time of the year; the heat
slowly fades later this month, and as we get into September. But, we
stress we can have some hot weather in September; in fact the hottest
temperature on record in Alabama was measured on September 5, 1925,
when the high in Centreville was 112 degrees.

TROPICAL UPDATE: Former tropical storm Edouard is in West Texas this
morning, about 170 miles west/northwest of Dallas, and is brining some
very welcomed rain to that part of the Lone Star State. Elsewhere, a
tropical wave is over the Bahamas this morning, and moving west in the
general direction of the Florida peninsula. No significant development
is expected. The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet this
morning.

COLD HAWAII WEATHER: Record low temperatures (in the low to mid 60s)
were reported in recent days in Maui County; light winds allowed
colder air from nearby mountains drained into the lower elevations.

...Thunderstorms Increase Tomorrow...

A PLEASANT WEEKEND WITH LOWER HUMIDITY: We have been treated with
some hot and very humid weather lately. During that time we have had
several episodes of big thunderstorms that gave us some beneficial
rains. Remember last weekend when a tornado threatened Pell City and
another one in Pickens County? Some communities got over 4 inches of
rain in all that excitement.

We all know that in the middle of summer with temperatures well into
the 90s and a lot of sun that it does not take long for that topsoil
moisture to escape. We need more frequent showers in summer than in
winter.

Now we have a chance to get another good round of showers and
thunderstorms tomorrow and tomorrow night and extending into Saturday
morning. Later in the day Saturday, we believe that almost all of the
showers and storms will be south of the I-20 corridor.

A POSSIBLE SEVERE WEATHER RISK: Almost always, when weather events
turn toward a break in the heat wave in midsummer in the Deep South,
the lightning in those thunderstorms can be especially ferocious. The
Storm Prediction Center has almost all of Tennessee and Kentucky under
a Slight Risk later today and tonight. Here in North and Central
Alabama, do not be surprised to see some severe thunderstorms later in
the day tomorrow and tomorrow night. In fact, the latest assessment
from the SPC places North Alabama from about Birmingham northward in a
Slight Risk.

AFTER THE STORMS: One of the key ingredients to get the thunderstorms
is a cold front or cool front or frontal boundary that is expected to
push down into North Alabama by late tomorrow. Some of the projections
show it moving as far south as Montgomery before starting back north.
This is a haphazard thing to deal with in the Deep South in midsummer.
There are a lot of cold front graveyards in North and Central Alabama.
Anyway, after chewing on all the information we can find, we are
calling for mostly sunny and less humid weather both Saturday and
Sunday with lower humidity and pleasant mornings. Lows over the
weekend between 64 and 66 here in Central Alabama. I will go out on a
limb and say that some place in NE Alabama will report upper 50s at
some time between Saturday morning and Monday morning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Edouard, of course, is now only a tropical
depression. This afternoon he was located about 70 miles WSW of Dallas
and still moving westward. A small area of showers and thunderstorms,
with a tropical wave, is just east of the Central Bahamas and moving
west 10 to 15. It is in unfriendly territory for the time being. It
could eventually produce heavy showers over part of the Bahamas and
South Florida in the next day or two.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Charlotte Barton in Tuscaloosa is one of
our regular readers. Responding to the column yesterday she reminds me
that she still dearly misses Benji. He died over a year ago. Charlotte
reminds us that dogs are a part of our family also and I fully agree.
Little Miss Molly petitioned for playtime late last night. I was too
busy, so she went on one of the most vigorous energy explosions since
we have had her. She was slinging balls everywhere, reversing
directions on a dime and racing through the house so rapidly that her
tail was sticking straight out behind her. She had to be doing 30 mph.
Life goes on.

...Heat To Break At Week's End...

A little bit of relief is in sight from the very hot temperatures we
have been experiencing. It will come in the form of a trough over the
eastern U.S. that will be setting up shop during the end of the week
into the weekend.

FORECAST HIGHLIGHTS: It was another hot one across Alabama on
Tuesday. Today promises to be a lot like yesterday, except that a
coupe of isolated storms will probably develop this afternoon at the
time of peak hearing. Temperatures today will average around 96
across the area. Hotter readings will be over western sections.
Changes are ahead as we head toward Thursday. The giant heat bubble
that has been locked in over the southern United States from Arizona
to Florida will begin to recede westward. The upper flow over Alabama
and the Southeast will buckle and turn out of the northwest. This
will allow a frontal boundary to approach Alabama from the north
This means scattered showers and storms on Thursday and a fairly good
chance on Friday. The boundary will push down into South Alabama by
Saturday , allowing drier air to flow into the northern half of the
state and allowing for some fairly comfortable humidities by Saturday
night and Sunday.

GOOD BYE ED: Edouard moved inland on the Texas Coast between High
Island and Sabine Pass yesterday morning with top winds of 65 mph.
Storm surge was about four feet. Very heavy rains fell in the area
around Houston, where flash flood warnings were required. Tornadoes
were surprisingly not much of a problem. The rest of the tropical
Atlantic is quiet. The global models are not bullish on any tropical
development in the next few days.

COLORADO STATE HURRICANE FORECAST UPDATED: Researchers Philip
Klotzbach and William Gray at CSU have upgraded their seasonal
hurricane outlook, predicting now we will see 17 named storms, nine
hurricanes and five major hurricanes this year in the Atlantic. This
is an increase from 15/8/4 on their June update. They city above
normal sea surface temperatures and favorable pressure patterns over
the Atlantic as this main reasons for the increase. The long term
average is almost ten named storms, six hurricanes and 2.5 major
hurricanes. A major hurricane is defined as category three or higher.

PERSEIDS WATCH: The annual Perseids meteor shower will peak next
Tuesday, August 12th. The best time for catching lots of shooting
stars will be during the pre-dawn hours next Tuesday. Experts expect
50-100 meteors per hour at peak. Of course, you will want to be away
from city lights for optimal viewing.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: Virginia experienced its worst tornado outbreak
ever as eighteen tornadoes rip through the state in five hours. In
an average year, only six tornadoes are reported in the state. The
worst outbreak prior to this one produced just ten twisters. The most
devastating tornado caused severe damage in the historic part of
Petersburg, then moved on to Pocahontas Island and into Colonial
Heights. Here the storm ripped apart a WalMart store, killing three
people and injuring nearly 200. The F4 twister was the first known
violent tornado in Virginia history. It killed a total of 4 people
and injured 246 along its 12 mile path. Total damages were nearly $50
million.

...Hope For the Heat Weary...

HEAT BACKS OFF LATE IN THE WEEK: That will be welcome, because we
have had an overdose of hot weather lately. Temperatures soared well
into the 90s again this afternoon with the heat index over 100 in most
places. Do not look for much change tomorrow. We are projecting 96
again for Central Alabama with the afternoon heat index about 105. We
are introducing a small risk of a shower or thunderstorm tomorrow
afternoon or evening. Translation: most places will stay dry.

Our dear friend, the weather models, indicate a frontal boundary
pushing southward and maybe into North Alabama by Friday and Saturday
and coming to a screeching halt as usual. We do not know the exact
place it will stall, but it should drop our humidity just a bit for
Saturday and the high temperatures will back away from such ridiculous
values starting Thursday.

OUR BEST CHANCE OF RAIN: We think that might be on Friday, but we
will see some scattered showers and storms show up as early as
Thursday afternoon and Thursday night. The
combination of more clouds and the scattered storms will permit our
high temperature to back off to about 88 on Friday. That will almost
feel like autumn (teasing, of course).

TROPICAL WEATHER: Edouard moved ashore on the upper Texas coast at 7
o'clock this morning. This afternoon he was moving toward the NW
further inland over SE Texas. He did not reach hurricane force before
making landfall. There were some wind gusts around 65 mph. In some
ways, he is a welcome benefit, because much of that part of Texas is
in severe drought conditions. The eventual rain amounts in places like
Galveston and Houston may exceed 5 inches. This afternoon the rain had
spread as far westward as Austin. Edouard will continue moving
directly through the center of Texas and, of course, weaken along the
way.

SCATTERED OR ISOLATED: I got that question again last Sunday at
church. A gentleman who is very intelligent asked me which term would
indicate a better chance of rain. He said he had wondered that for
many years. I explained that scattered would give you a better chance
of getting wet than isolated. Just goes to show you that we sometimes
assume everyone understands
our terminology.

STORMS LAST SATURDAY: This interesting note from Greg Hollon in his
own words, "I was down on the lake Saturday afternoon when the shelf
cloud came over Cropwell. I have a place on
Logan Martin at Griffith's Bend and had an excellent view as it passed
over the lake. There was a very small area of rotation that had
dropped down just below the cloud, but was not on the ground (I'm sure
you've seen it before). Pretty nasty storm but did not appear to have
a tornado. I'm a private pilot and an Alfa Insurance adjuster so I've
seen my share of bad clouds."

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I frequently receive e-mails from people
that are deeply hurt by the loss of a pet. I wonder how Susan Lollar
is doing after losing her precious little 11-year-old Maltese to
cancer nearly one month ago. He had only been sick for a short time
and passed away in the middle of the night. I want to check also with
a couple near Jasper who lost their precious little Gracie to a
neighbor's large dog (I believe a pit bull) several years ago. It
takes a long time to recover. These e-mails make me spend more time
with Little Miss Molly and treasure the years we have with her. Molly
seems to be in perfect health and coming up on six years old. During
her lifetime, I have learned to speak doggy language to her. She looks
at me like she understands every single word. Her little eyes can
captivate me to do anything (almost) she wants. Life goes on.
