...Spring Forward...

GOOD MORNING! If you didn't set your clock ahead before retiring last
night, you better hurry because you are probably late. Daylight Saving Time
began early this morning.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Skies will start out gray in many areas this morning with
low clouds and fog that formed overnight. A warm Spring sun will return
later this morning, pushing temperatures into the lower 80s across the area.
The airmass across Central Alabama will be unstable enough to allow for the
development of scattered showers and storms this afternoon. An approaching
cold front will set up a few showers and storms overnight. These showers
will continue into Monday morning.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Behind the frontal system that will be producing the
showers and storms, significantly drier and cooler air will flow into
Alabama. Skies will be mostly sunny Tuesday and Wednesday, with partly
cloudy conditions expected on Thursday. Temperatures on Tuesday will remain
in the upper 60s after a cool start with readings in the forties Tuesday
morning.
It will be a few degrees cooler on Wednesday morning, with 30s possible in a
few locations. 70s will return for afternoon highs on Wednesday and
Thursday.

Another storm system will begin to affect Alabama on Thursday, with
increasingly breezy conditions. A few showers will arrive in western
sections during the evening, and become likely across the area during the
overnight hours. Showers and storms will continue into part of the day on
Friday. Temperatures will remain in the 70s for daytime highs and 50s for
overnight lows as we head into the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines began to come to
life. The eventual series of eruptions in June would be the most violent
volcanic eruption of the twentieth century. Despite the organized
evacuation of nearly 200,000 nearby residents, 900 people would still die.
42,000 homes on the island of Luzon were destroyed.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME BASEBALL? Are you ready for some baseball? Major
League Baseball kicks off its 162 game regular season Sunday night with a
game between the Indians and White Sox and follows it up with several games
on Monday starting around noon. And what a great week weather wise for the
start of baseball...

EXTREME MAKEOVER: My forecast package requires an "Extreme Makeover" this
morning. The front that brought us the showers and storms last night is
still with us, draped across North Central Alabama. Showers and even a few
thunderstorms were ongoing across eastern sections, roughly from Jefferson
County on east along I-20 early this morning. Those showers and storms will
continue to sink slowly southward today. Areas south of I-20 will
experience decent chances of rain and storms today, while areas behind the
boundary will be mainly dry. Clouds may hang tough for the better part of
the day, with the best chances for seeing a little sun increasing as you
head northwestward. Temperatures will climb back into the middle to upper
70s for the most part.

TONIGHT: The front should continue to lose steam as it presses further
south. Showers and storms should die out over South Central Alabama this
evening with most areas experiencing a quiet night precipitation wise.
Overnight readings will be centered around 60-62 degrees.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow will start off gray as low clouds and fog form once again
overnight tonight. But the sun should make an appearance earlier and the
mercury will soar nicely in the lower 80s in many locations. The airmass
over the state will be a little unstable tomorrow, so showers and storms
will be scattered across the area.

NEXT SYSTEM: Another in a series of low pressure systems will pass to our
north late tomorrow and Monday. This will brush a front across the area
starting late tomorrow night. We will see another round of showers and
storms at that time. Temperatures will be in the 70s on Monday. It looks
like drier and cooler air will arrive starting Monday night, with some spots
seeing the 40s Monday night.

WEATHER ALERT: Tuesday looks like a nice day with lots of sunshine. But
temperatures in the overnight model runs look to be cooler that expected
earlier, so we will buy this idea and lower readings in that time frame.
The sun is pretty much undefeated this time of year, however, so I would
look for the mercury to rebound a bit more than those bytes and bits expect,
so we might get to issue a Perfect Weather Warning for Wednesday and perhaps
Thursday. Next rain chance: Friday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Mother Nature played a cruel April Fools' Day joke on
the Northeast. A cold rain changed over to heavy wet snow in eastern
Massachusetts as cold air filled in behind a storm system. Boston recorded
25.4 inches of snow, their greatest 24 hours total ever. There have been
bigger snowstorms, but not bigger 24 hour totals. If it had not been for
several changeovers from snow to rain during the event, the total might have
well been over three feet. Trees were already beginning to leaf out and the
heavy, wet snow caused thousands of them to fall.

...Snow In Our Forecast?...

GOOD MORNING: We have been monitoring computer models for the past few days trying to confirm what we were seeing.. The weather models kept trying to depict a huge Arctic airmass heading southward with a strong low pressure system in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. We now believe that the consistency of the model runs indicates that we will experience a major snowstorm here in Central Alabama in the next ten days. It is too early to be specific...because it is April Fools Day….

APRIL 1: Sorry...couldn't resist that one. Seems like I don’t usually get to forecast on April Fools Day. In reality, snow is the furthest thing from reality in the days ahead. In fact, temperatures will be above 80 Sunday and Monday and in the comfortable 70s for much of the coming seven days.

WEEKEND FORECAST: Most areas will get off to a cloudy start this morning in the wake of a weak front that produced some fairly strong showers and storms late yesterday afternoon and evening, especially over the Tennessee Valley.. Sun should return, at least partially, today, with temperatures warming well into the 70s. Expect a repeat performance tomorrow, just a little more sunshine and a little warmer.

THE WEEK AHEAD: But clouds will be on the increase again by late on Sunday with a few showers and storms brushing North Alabama late Sunday night into Monday morning.

Some drier air will filter into Alabama by Tuesday, leading to dry conditions through midweek. A weakening area of showers and storms will limp our way on Friday.

Temperatures will remain above normal for the foreseeable future, with 80s returning by the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: The Baltimore Orioles postponed their opening day-game against the Kansas City Royals because of cold weather and high winds. This was the second time in a row that the Orioles home opener was postponed. Orioles opening day was canceled only one other time, in 1972 at Memorial Stadium.

A WARM WEEKEND: We sure do not see any threat of frost any time soon and temperatures are going to be well above normal for at least a week. There will be a slight cool down by Tuesday, but it should be a perfectly comfortable day. There is a chance that some parts of Alabama will reach the mid 80s Sunday and 80 to 83 on Monday. Otherwise highs will be well up into the 70s and lows mostly in the lower 60s.

NOW ABOUT RAIN: As a cold front edges closer to the state, scattered showers and possibly some thunderstorms will occur tonight and Saturday morning. We believe that the main energy in these storms will be to the north of Alabama. We have not mentioned a chance of severe storms this far south. However, during the night there is a chance that there could be a few strong storms mainly north of the Birmingham area. The surface low is far to the north.

VIOLENT WEATHER: Lots of severe thunderstorms and several tornadoes from Oklahoma to Nebraska yesterday, including one in the Omaha area. We saw the fairly unusual situation to where the Texas Panhandle had warnings at the same time they had blowing dust. You could even see the dust swirls on doppler radar. You could also see some smoke swirling around from more wildfires in the Texas Panhandle. In that area, hundreds of acres of grassland have been burned in the last couple of days. They experienced a major wildfire event just a couple of weeks ago. It is estimated that as much as 400 acres burned yesterday and about 10 homes were destroyed.

FRIDAY WRAP UP: Sure enjoyed speaking at the Birmingham East Rotary Club at noon. Thanks to Glenn Slye for arranging the program. My part was a tongue-in-cheek look at the weather, which is my nature...a violent tornado occurred on this date in 1933 across Jones, Jasper and Clarke Counties in Mississippi...it was an F4 that killed 37 people and injured 170...651 inches of snow has fallen this winter at Kirtwood in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains of California...well over 500 inches has fallen in places like Alta, Utah...big snow melt underway in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest and already causing some flooding….on this date in 1954, it was 108 degrees at Rio Grande City, Texas, hottest ever in the USA for the month of March.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One of the most pleasant things about Little Miss Molly is watching her wake up every morning. She goes through a ritual of stretching, yawning, moaning and groaning. Now she has developed a habit of pulling herself along on her tummy to the little bell on the back door which is a signal, “I need to go to the bathroom.” Very pleasant walk this morning. Molly and I have walked so much that we can almost automatically tell the temperature by stepping outside. This morning we could tell the dew point was up quite a bit...same mockingbird was in the top of the same sassafras tree singing at the top of his voice. We love music...a nice e-mail from a lady who lives on Neely-Henry Lake. They have seen cardinals for a couple of weeks and yesterday she saw the first hummingbird since last fall. She put out food for the little creature. She just loves to watch the hummingbirds. They have had as many as 15 on one feeder. Life goes on and spring has sprung.

...Showers Could Show Up Tonight...

Clouds will increase across Alabama today in advance of a major storm system
which produced a number of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes yesterday
across the nation's mid-section. Thankfully, the main dynamics will pass
well to the north of Alabama today as the system heads toward the Great
Lakes.

The trailing front, which will weaken with time, will approach Alabama
tonight and should bring a band of scattered showers and thunderstorms.
While there is a small chance of a shower late this afternoon, the bulk of
the showers will come tonight, mainly after 9:00 p.m. We don't expect any
problems with severe weather, and the rain probably won't be all that heavy.

THE WEEKEND: The front will stall out and fizzle out over North Alabama
tomorrow. We will mention just a few widely scattered showers tomorrow, but
many Alabama communities will be dry. Pretty much the same story on Sunday;
just a small risk of a shower during the afternoon. Highs this weekend will
be mostly in the 76 to 82 degree range, about 10 degrees above normal for
early April in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: Another weak front will bring a chance of scattered showers or
storms on Monday. The middle of the week should be dry, and temperatures
will remain above normal for early April in Alabama.

A WARM DAY: Tuscaloosa, Pinson, and Dothan soared to 82 degrees yesterday.
Anniston reached 80, and Birmingham's high was 78.

SPRING FORWARD: Don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour tomorrow
night before you go to bed; we go on Daylight Saving Time Sunday at 2:00
a.m. The sunset time Sunday evening is 7:08 p.m.

MORE WARM AFTERNOONS: Not much change in our thinking about daytime
temperatures across Alabama. Every afternoon should see the thermometer top
out somewhere between 78 and 83 over the next 7 to 9 days. The warmer
temperatures will be Sunday and Monday.

The precipitation side of the forecast is not quite as definite. We
should stay dry tonight and most of Friday. We believe the best chance of
showers and some thunderstorms will be later in the afternoon Friday, but
more so Friday night. The Storm Prediction Center has about the NW 1/3 of
Alabama under a slight risk of severe weather late tomorrow. We did not
mention it here in Central Alabama, but we will take a closer look at that
tonight or tomorrow. Still looks like the better chance to our north.

Saturday should also have some scattered showers or possibly a
thunderstorm. We think those will thin out greatly on Sunday, but show up
again Monday afternoon and evening. A cold front will still try to reach
this area later Saturday, but it has little chance of moving through the
state. Instead, it will go back north as a warm front Sunday leaving us in
the warm sector over the weekend. See our day-by-day forecast.

SEVERE WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center was expecting a
significant outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes this afternoon
and tonight. The areas mainly affected are NW Arkansas, Southern Iowa,
Central and Eastern Kansas, Central and Western Missouri, SE Nebraska,
Central and Eastern Oklahoma.

WEATHER NUMBERS: 92 in Laredo was the national hot spot
yesterday...20 was the low this morning in the lower 48 in Ely, Nevada and
Lake Tahoe...41 below zero was the coldest in Alaska at Chandalar Lake where
the wind chill dropped as low as 52 below zero ...San Francisco has
experienced rain on a record 24 days this month...one of the lowest
temperatures in Alabama this morning was 34 in Ft. Payne. Most lows were in
the 40s...Birmingham gets precipitation on an average of 117 days each year.
Compare that to Phoenix with only 36...Marble Bar in West Australia once had
a heat wave so severe that the temperature was 100 or hotter on 165 days in
a row.

DID YOU KNOW: that a couple of years ago, the head of the
Turkmenistan national weather office was fired by the country's president
for inaccurate forecasts? Oops!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have played so much ball with Little
Miss Molly the last few days that I feel like a pitcher for the New York
Yankees. Some have gone extra innings. The little girl never gets enough.
Only thing, after fielding the ball and bringing it back to me 5 or 10 times
in a row, she then wants me to chase her all over the house and snatch the
ball from her...the birds were singing so loudly this morning that we heard
them before we stepped outside. We saw our first robin and our first
cardinal of the year...that same mockingbird was perched in the top of the
same tree running his mouth constantly. Maybe he was trying to direct
traffic..we also met two worms coming down the track and I was able to pull
back on Molly's leash before she scooped them up...yuck...Life goes on.

...The warm-up Continues...

Afternoons will continue to warm-up across Alabama during the next few days.
We are forecasting highs in the upper 70s today, and some communities over
in West Alabama might even reach the low 80s. The air remains relatively dry
and we don't expect any rain.

ON THE MAPS: A significant outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes is
possible today across the nation's mid-section, in the broad area from
Dallas to Chicago. This major storm will move northeast, toward the Great
Lakes tomorrow. We will introduce a chance of a shower tomorrow afternoon,
but showers and a few storms are more likely tomorrow night as the front
trailing from the Great Lakes storm system approaches. Once again, severe
weather and heavy rain is not likely here with the main upper air support so
far to the north, and weakening wind fields both near the surface and aloft.

THE WEEKEND: The weekend still looks mostly rain-free. A brief, stray shower
is possible Saturday morning, but the sun should break our by Saturday
afternoon. Then, on Sunday, we will mention an outside risk of a stray
shower during the afternoon. But once again, most Alabama communities will
have very little rain over the weekend. Temperatures will remain warm, with
highs in the upper 70s and low 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Another weakening front might bring a few scattered showers on
Monday afternoon, but again no severe weather or heavy rain is expected. No
sign of any cold air; temperatures next week will be above normal for early
April in Alabama.

DON'T FORGET: We go on Daylight Saving Time (DST) this weekend, set your
clocks AHEAD one hour late Saturday night!

SPRING IN THE AIR: One of those Chamber of Commerce days across Alabama
today and we will have another one tomorrow and most of Friday. In fact, the
warm afternoon temperatures will continue for the foreseeable future. We do
not even see a significant cool down for the next 7 to 9 days and that is
about as far as we can be reasonably accurate.
A stalled front was draped across Central Alabama this afternoon.
Dew points are much lower over the north than down south, so the cooler
temperatures tonight will be over NE Alabama.
OUR NEXT CHANCE OF RAIN: The chances tomorrow look so slim that we
have taken it out of the forecast. Another cold front will be trying to
invade our territory this weekend. We think now that showers on Friday
across Central Alabama will hold off until late in the day. Our better
chance of showers, along with a few thunderstorms, will be Friday night. All
evidence points to the greatest energy from this system passing to the north
of Alabama, so we do not believe we will have a severe weather threat with
this. For a time we thought most of the weekend would be dry, but we have
reintroduced some showers as that next front stalls across Central Alabama.
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: Weather people are always glad to get new
weather information. We are pleased to see that we now get hourly reports
from Gulf Shores on the Alabama coast from Jack Edwards Airport.
DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME: Excuse me for editorializing a bit here, but
I just do not like DST. It starts at 2:00 Sunday morning. You will need to
set your clocks ahead one hour. DST will stay in effect until the last
Sunday in October. Next year, DST will take up more of the year starting the
second Sunday in March and ending the first Sunday in November. World
weather data flows using Universal Time This means that we will have one
hour less time to prepare all of our forecasts.
THREE DOT STUFF: Two days ago there was 15 inches of snow on the
ground atop Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains. This morning they reported
zero, which means 1/2 inch or less...the only tornado in the entire USA
yesterday was in Central California...minor damage...over 5 inches of rain
in the last 24 hours in SE Texas and nearly 5 inches in Ventura County,
California...40 below zero this morning at Chandalar Lake, Alaska, no global
warming there for today...coldest in the lower 48 was 9 at Truckee,
California.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Yesterday, every time I walked Molly
it was full speed ahead. I spent most of the walk yanking back on the leash.
This morning it was just the opposite. Extremely casual. We took forever. It
was a beautiful walk with blue sky and great visibility...there are 4 homes
on the upper side of the walking track where real Molly fans live. She
always plops down in their backyards, ears alert and tail slowly wagging
hoping they will come out and pat her on the head or give her a tummy
rub...more birds singing this morning than we have heard yet. One
mockingbird, perched in the top of a small barren oak tree, was singing
continuously. Using my imagination, I thought the bird was singing "Yellow
Rose of Texas" or the "Tennessee Waltz" but he changed to rap...life goes on
and it goes better with the birds serenading.

...Mild Weather In The Days Ahead...

Generally speaking, our weather should be somewhat uneventful for the next
two weeks as the primary storm track for now is running from the Great
Plains to the Great Lakes. This will leave Alabama in a pattern with above
normal temperatures and below normal rainfall through mid-April. We see no
big chance of severe storms, flooding, or freezing temperatures for a while.
Not bad at all for March and April.

SHORT TERM: We will rise well into the 70s today and tomorrow with a partly
sunny sky. There is just a slim risk of a shower around here tomorrow
afternoon.

A band of showers and storms will move through sometime between 4:00 p.m.
Friday and 4:00 a.m. Saturday. The chance of severe weather at this point
looks pretty small with the primary dynamics lifting well to the north of
Alabama and weakening wind fields. Rainfall amounts of around one-half inch
are a good bet.

THE WEEKEND: The weather should be dry and mild on both Saturday and Sunday
with partly sunny days with afternoon highs in the mid 70s. There is a
decent chance the dry weather will last into the first part of next week.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals were on the light side across Alabama
yesterday. Measured amounts included .11" at Anniston, .10" at Harpersville,
and .09" at Riverchase.

SKYWATCH: Looks like much of the nation's mid-section will have a
significant risk of severe thunderstorms and a few tornadoes tomorrow; in
the general area from Dallas-Fort Worth to Chicago during the afternoon and
evening hours. A few isolated severe storms are possible later today from
West Texas northward to southern Nebraska.

MILD IS THE WORD: Lot of difference in the temperature this morning
across Alabama as compared to the past week. While we will still have some
fairly cool nights, look for every single day to be mild for at least the
next week to ten days. In fact on some of those days, the old thermometer
might shoot for the 80-degree mark.

Rain prospects are not that clear cut. A weak cold front was pushing
across North and Central Alabama this afternoon with no major effect on the
temperature. That should keep us dry through Wednesday. Even on Thursday,
the chance of a shower late in the day is small.

It still looks like our best chance of showers with some
thunderstorms thrown in will be late Friday and Friday night. All the
evidence we can gather today points to the stronger storms passing to the
north of Alabama. The Storm Prediction Center in their experimental outlook
has the NW half of Alabama under a slight risk Friday. We are not so sure
that will happen and until clarification occurs we omitted the mention of
severe in the forecast for Friday. We may have to change that later, but
areas much further to the north of Alabama will have the best chance of
that.

THE HURRICANE SEASON: Yes, I know, it does not begin until June 1
and goes into late Autumn, but this is going to be a very anxious season.
All evidence points to another active tropical storm and hurricane season.
Can you imagine the tragedy if another hurricane or so were to strike
Florida and the Northern Gulf coast. We must remember that even a Category 2
would be a serious matter along the Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama coast. So
many structures that survived Katrina are still weakened and so many folks
are living in temporary quarters, such as small FEMA trailers. We invite you
to go into the 33/40 web site and click on Weather Brains. All of us
discussed that at length in this week's edition. Featured was a lengthy
interview with Max Mayfield by David Black and he is also quite concerned.

TUESDAY TIDBITS: While we are enjoying spring-like temperatures,
the wind chill was as low as minus 50 over North Alaska this morning and the
temperatures fell as low as 36 below at Nuiqsut...down in the lower 48, the
coldest was 8 above at the west entrance to Yellowstone Park (or Jellystone
Park as Yogi Bear used to say)...another big storm system in the west...12
to 18 inches of new snow expected in the Sierra-Nevada range...1 to 2 feet
of new snow expected in the higher elevations of the Wasatch Mountains in
Utah and the Western Uintah Mountains. Wind gusts along the ridges could
reach 70 mph.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One thing for sure-we cannot allow
ourselves to get old with Little Miss Molly around. We have to stay young to
keep up with her. Late last night, she was curled up in a tight knot on her
blanket on the couch. Suddenly, she became extremely excited and irritated
and was racing from door to door barking. My immediate thought was that a
bear was coming down the walking track or the CR (Community Rabbit) was
prowling. I picked Molly up and took her outside to see what was the matter.
She was so nervous she was shaking. Turned out to be some kids playing
several houses away. I could not hear anything inside the house, but Molly
has those sonar ears. We decided to go for a walk to get her calmed down.
Very late to bed and very early to rise...so goes life with a little 9-pound
dynamo ruling the roost...but life goes on.

...A Chilly Weekend Ahead...

A weak surface boundary will bring the risk of a few showers across Alabama
today. The best chance of showers for the northern counties will come during
the morning hours, and amounts should be one-quarter inch or less for most
spots.

The sky will clear late today and tonight, and tomorrow should be a dry day
around here with afternoon temperatures reaching the low 70s.
On Thursday, moist air returns and a few scattered showers could show up. To
the west, a significant severe weather episode will be possible Thursday in
the broad area from Dallas/Fort Worth to Chicago, across the nation's
mid-section. That system will be lifting northeast, and will pass well to
the north of Alabama on Friday. The trailing front should give us a fairly
decent round of showers and storms late Friday and Friday night. At this
point the severe weather threat looks relatively small thanks to the
dynamics passing so far to the north.

THE WEEKEND: The Friday night rain should be gone just in time for the
weekend. For now, the weather looks dry and mild on Saturday and Sunday with
highs well up into the 70s.

Another fast moving system will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms
to the state around the first part of next week.

DON'T FORGET: We go on Daylight Saving Time this weekend; we will set our
clocks ahead one hour (yep, we lose an hour of sleep!). The sun will set
about 10 minutes after 7:00 in the evening Monday of next week.

TIDBITS: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 86
degrees. More rain for Honolulu; their total yesterday was 1.16".
Birmingham's rain surplus for the year is still over four inches (4.09").

GOODBYE FREEZING TEMPERATURES: We had to be concerned for freezing
temperatures for much of the past week and over the weekend. It is likely
that some freeze damage occurred. Here is a quick look at some low
temperatures this morning and they are similar to what occurred also Sunday
morning.
24 at Black Creek with heavy frost (NE Etowah Cty)
25 in DeSoto State Park
27 in Ft. Payne and Crossville
28 in Meridianville
29 in Decatur
31 in Huntsville
32 in Anniston, Tuscaloosa, Albertville, Cullman
33 in Montgomery
The weather pattern is changing. Instead of more unseasonably cold
nights, we are going for a milder trend and you know what that means. We
will, of course, have occasional showers and maybe even some thunderstorms.
Actually another cold front will be trying to move down into Alabama Tuesday
setting off some showers. The front will fizzle out between Birmingham and
Montgomery. We are going to omit showers from the forecast for Wednesday.
That could possibly be a mistake, but we believe the ones that occur will be
down south.
As the front works back north as a warm front, we may see some
afternoon showers on Thursday. The best chance of some showers and maybe
some thunderstorms will be late Friday and Friday night. Meanwhile, our low
temperatures (instead of being in the 20s and 30s) will be in the 40s and
50s and afternoons in the 60s and 70s.
BAD THINGS ON THIS DAY: Here in Alabama a tragic event on March 27
, 1994 which was Palm Sunday. A powerful tornado cut a 50-mile path from
Ragland in St. Clair County over to the Georgia border. It moved through the
Ohatchee area. But the most tragic event occurred at the Goshen United
Methodist Church in Spring Garden when 20 people were killed inside the
church...on this same date way back in 1890, 78 people were killed by a
tornado in Louisville, including 44 in the Falls City Hall building. This
still stands as the most people ever killed by a tornado in a single
building...and finally, on this date in 1964, the Alaskan earthquake. It was
a powerful 8.6 on the Richter Scale.
MONDAY MEANDERING: Deep snow atop Mt. LeConte in the Smoky
Mountains this morning-15 inches worth and they had a low of 10...12 inches
on the ground at Beech Mountain, NC and 6 inches at Mt. Mitchell...cold
temperatures this morning an even zero at Stanley, Idaho in the Sawtooth
Mountains (the mountains really do look like the teeth of a saw)...it was 36
below in Deadhorse, Alaska.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Much, much playtime with Little Miss
Molly over the weekend-maybe a record amount. And guess what? It just makes
her want to play more. I really think that little girl believes I was put on
this old earth merely to play with her in all of her waking hours. Had a
great walk yesterday afternoon. The moment we stepped out the door,
Bridgette was passing by. Bridgette is another Shih-tzu and her grandmother
was walking her. There was lots of loving. A bit later way up the walking
track, a lady saw us pass by and came out to the track with her little
granddaughter to play with Molly. Another big long love session. Overall,
Molly cannot complain about the nice weekend she had. Life goes on.

...Red Letter Day...

GOOD MORNING: Today we remember the Palm Sunday tornado that ripped through the Goshen United Methodist Church near Piedmont. More in a moment...

WARM UP AHEAD: Calm and mostly clear conditions overnight led to more cold conditions with a freeze in a few locations. Those calm winds will pick up out of the south today, bringing in warmer air. Readings this afternoon will warm into the middle 60s for the most part. Clouds will be slowly increasing through the day, becoming cloudy overnight in response to an approaching storm system.

Rain will invade western and northern sections late tonight with showers and maybe a few rumbles of thunder through Tuesday morning as a front settles into Central Alabama. The proximity of that front and a series of disturbances in a moist southwesterly flow will continue the shower chances through Thursday.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEEKND: A more organized storm system will begin approaching from the west late Thursday night. It will spread an area of showers and thunderstorms across the state beginning around lunchtime on Friday. It appears that the system will be weakening as it runs into the brick wall of the subtropical ridge over the Atlantic. Showers should diminish during the day Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: What began as a peaceful Palm Sunday quickly changed to a black day day in Alabama weather history when a powerful tornado ripped through northeast Alabama and northern Georgia. By the time the storm was over twenty-two were dead and ninety-two were injured by the twister. An F4 tornado cut a 50 mile path from Ragland in St. Clair, County Alabama to the Georgia line. The most disastrous damage occurred at Goshen, where the twister struck the Goshen United Methodist Church at 11:37 am. Twenty people were killed at the church, which did not hear the tornado warning issued ten minutes earlier by the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

GOOD AFTERNOON! Greetings from Universal Studios in Orlando. Today, it is a day of roller coasters and thrill rides for me. Always a kid, I guess...

FREEZE TONIGHT: Every major reporting station across North and Central Alabama was below freezing this morning, with Pinson leading the way in our area at 25F. It was 23F in Fort Payne for the state’s coldest. The same sprawling high pressure system that has been responsible for this current cold snap will be centered just to our north tonight. As our winds will go calm tonight, and with clear skies, temperatures will flirt with the freezing mark again tonight. The model statistics programs are keeping readings about 5-6 degrees warmer than last night, but with low dewpoints and excellent radiational cooling, growers will have to be vigilant for freezing conditions. Freezing conditions will not be as widespread tonight and we won’t see any more for a while.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The warm up will be noticeable tomorrow as southerly winds kick back in across the area. Temperatures will warm into the upper 60s under a warm Spring sun. By Monday evening, high pressure will be stationed over South Carolina with a mild southerly flow bathing the Deep South. A cyclone will be over Iowa, with a cold front trailing back to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. As this system edges east, showers will edge into North Alabama after midnight.

The front will run out of steam as it moves into North Alabama on Tuesday. You can expect showers and a storm or two then.

An unsettled pattern then develops for the remainder of the week, with a series of disturbances sliding across the area in a southwesterly flow Wednesday and Thursday. A strong low pressure moves into the Upper Midwest Friday, pushing a front our way. This will lead to a round of showers and storms by then.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEKEND: Showers and storms may well continue into Saturday as the front runs into stubborn high pressure.

STRANGE FLIGHT: Did you read the amazing story of Matt Suter of Fordland, Missouri? The teenager was sitting in a chair watching television on the evening of March 12th when a tornado struck his mobile home. When he came to, he was over 1,300 feet away in a pasture. Amazingly, he suffered no serious injuries. Because of his lack of injuries, he apparently was blown the entire way.

According to Tom Grazulis of the Tornado Project, this is the greatest distance that a human has been blown through the air by a tornado and survived.

CHERRY BLOSSOM FORECAST: The celebration of Spring began yesterday in our nation’s capital. The blossoms were forecast to enter their peak blooming period yesterday through tomorrow, according to the National Park Service. The 94th commemoration of the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Japan runs for the next two weeks.

SPEAKING OF WASHINGTON D.C.: Varied weather can still happen in late March, as evidenced by the foot of snow that fell in the nation’s capital on this date in 1891. Up to five inches has fallen as late as March 30-31 there.

...Warmup Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Greetings from Punta Gorda, Florida. This was ground zero for Hurricane Charley in August 2004. What a cute little downtown. You can still see evidence of the hurricane in buildings that still have to be demolished, but overall, the town was in great shape. They have an excellent city plan that includes a waterfront condo, hotel and shopping development. It was interesting to note that the area has lost about ten percent of its population since the hurricane. We had a great dinner in the historic district, complete with a beautiful sunset.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Skies will be mostly sunny across the area today, with temperatures generally in the upper 50s. Expect clear and cool conditions tonight, although it will not be as cold as the past couple of nights. Most locations will stay above freezing.

THE WEEK AHEAD : Our winds will come around to the south on Monday and the result will be a nice warmup, with daytime readings warming into the upper 60s. Skies will cloud up Monday night, with a slight chance of a shower toward morning. Then the remainder of the week looks wet. Expect a good chance of storms, along with a chance of a storm. The front responsible for the precipitation will stall out over the area and give us more rain chances on Wednesday.

The front will then go north as a warm front on Thursday, and temperatures will soar well into the 70s to near 80 for Thursday and Friday. We will have to keep a chance of showers and storms in the forecast into the weekend, with a warm, relatively unstable airmass in place across the area.
Showers and thunderstorms will become likely on Sunday. Rainfall could be heavy with the slow moving system by then, and storms could be strong to
severe.

ON THIS DATE IN 1929: The town of Elba received an amazing 38.09 inches of rain during a four-week period from February 26-March 26 as every river in the state of Alabama was in flood. Birmingham received 81.82 inches of rain that year, a record that still stands. The annual rainfall total at Seven Hills west of Mobile was a whopping 96.88 inches. Twenty nine people died in the flooding in Alabama.
