MILD IS THE WORD: Lot of difference in the temperature this morning
across Alabama as compared to the past week. While we will still have some
fairly cool nights, look for every single day to be mild for at least the
next week to ten days. In fact on some of those days, the old thermometer
might shoot for the 80-degree mark.

Rain prospects are not that clear cut. A weak cold front was pushing
across North and Central Alabama this afternoon with no major effect on the
temperature. That should keep us dry through Wednesday. Even on Thursday,
the chance of a shower late in the day is small.

It still looks like our best chance of showers with some
thunderstorms thrown in will be late Friday and Friday night. All the
evidence we can gather today points to the stronger storms passing to the
north of Alabama. The Storm Prediction Center in their experimental outlook
has the NW half of Alabama under a slight risk Friday. We are not so sure
that will happen and until clarification occurs we omitted the mention of
severe in the forecast for Friday. We may have to change that later, but
areas much further to the north of Alabama will have the best chance of
that.

THE HURRICANE SEASON: Yes, I know, it does not begin until June 1
and goes into late Autumn, but this is going to be a very anxious season.
All evidence points to another active tropical storm and hurricane season.
Can you imagine the tragedy if another hurricane or so were to strike
Florida and the Northern Gulf coast. We must remember that even a Category 2
would be a serious matter along the Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama coast. So
many structures that survived Katrina are still weakened and so many folks
are living in temporary quarters, such as small FEMA trailers. We invite you
to go into the 33/40 web site and click on Weather Brains. All of us
discussed that at length in this week's edition. Featured was a lengthy
interview with Max Mayfield by David Black and he is also quite concerned.

TUESDAY TIDBITS: While we are enjoying spring-like temperatures,
the wind chill was as low as minus 50 over North Alaska this morning and the
temperatures fell as low as 36 below at Nuiqsut...down in the lower 48, the
coldest was 8 above at the west entrance to Yellowstone Park (or Jellystone
Park as Yogi Bear used to say)...another big storm system in the west...12
to 18 inches of new snow expected in the Sierra-Nevada range...1 to 2 feet
of new snow expected in the higher elevations of the Wasatch Mountains in
Utah and the Western Uintah Mountains. Wind gusts along the ridges could
reach 70 mph.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One thing for sure-we cannot allow
ourselves to get old with Little Miss Molly around. We have to stay young to
keep up with her. Late last night, she was curled up in a tight knot on her
blanket on the couch. Suddenly, she became extremely excited and irritated
and was racing from door to door barking. My immediate thought was that a
bear was coming down the walking track or the CR (Community Rabbit) was
prowling. I picked Molly up and took her outside to see what was the matter.
She was so nervous she was shaking. Turned out to be some kids playing
several houses away. I could not hear anything inside the house, but Molly
has those sonar ears. We decided to go for a walk to get her calmed down.
Very late to bed and very early to rise...so goes life with a little 9-pound
dynamo ruling the roost...but life goes on.
