...Warmup Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Greetings from Punta Gorda, Florida. This was ground zero for Hurricane Charley in August 2004. What a cute little downtown. You can still see evidence of the hurricane in buildings that still have to be demolished, but overall, the town was in great shape. They have an excellent city plan that includes a waterfront condo, hotel and shopping development. It was interesting to note that the area has lost about ten percent of its population since the hurricane. We had a great dinner in the historic district, complete with a beautiful sunset.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Skies will be mostly sunny across the area today, with temperatures generally in the upper 50s. Expect clear and cool conditions tonight, although it will not be as cold as the past couple of nights. Most locations will stay above freezing.

THE WEEK AHEAD : Our winds will come around to the south on Monday and the result will be a nice warmup, with daytime readings warming into the upper 60s. Skies will cloud up Monday night, with a slight chance of a shower toward morning. Then the remainder of the week looks wet. Expect a good chance of storms, along with a chance of a storm. The front responsible for the precipitation will stall out over the area and give us more rain chances on Wednesday.

The front will then go north as a warm front on Thursday, and temperatures will soar well into the 70s to near 80 for Thursday and Friday. We will have to keep a chance of showers and storms in the forecast into the weekend, with a warm, relatively unstable airmass in place across the area.
Showers and thunderstorms will become likely on Sunday. Rainfall could be heavy with the slow moving system by then, and storms could be strong to
severe.

ON THIS DATE IN 1929: The town of Elba received an amazing 38.09 inches of rain during a four-week period from February 26-March 26 as every river in the state of Alabama was in flood. Birmingham received 81.82 inches of rain that year, a record that still stands. The annual rainfall total at Seven Hills west of Mobile was a whopping 96.88 inches. Twenty nine people died in the flooding in Alabama.
