...Moist Air And Soggy Earth...

SOAKED TO CAPACITY: I have been in weather work for eons and I cannot
remember when the Alabama countryside was as soggy as we are now in
September unless there was a tropical system involved.

But, no tropical system to blame it on. There was a low-pressure area
that formed over the NW Gulf of Mexico that may have been a cousin to
a tropical system. It moved inland a long time ago and has lolly-
gagged in areas west of Alabama forever. This afternoon, the low was
centered over Mississippi and since Alabama is on the east side of the
circulation, southerly winds continue to refuel the atmosphere
resulting in more showers and thunderstorms.

Do not look for much relief from the wet weather until the middle of
next week. Even then we will have some scattered showers and
thunderstorms, but fewer in number. The old thermometer will take
advantage of that and give us some higher afternoon temperatures in
the mid to upper 80s.
Meanwhile, through this weekend and early next week our highs will
mostly be in the lower 80s.

The National Weather Service has a number of Central Alabama counties
under a Flash Flood Watch until midnight tonight. This includes places
like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston. Enormous amounts of rain
have fallen over the area starting mainly on Thursday. It would not
take a great deal of additional rain to set off some flash flooding.
Part of the Cahaba was in flood today and so was Village Creek in West
Birmingham. Before daybreak today, it was raining so hard in Autauga
County that railroad tracks were washed out 5 miles SE of Mountain
Creek. A train was derailed.

BIG RAIN AMOUNTS: Part of NE Jefferson County has received well over
9 inches of rain since Thursday. In the last 30 hours, Birmingham has
received 2.73 inches of additional rain and Tuscaloosa 2.72 inches. We
have an amazing rain surplus now for the Birmingham area. We have
already received 8.30 inches this month and the excess for the year
stands at 9.89 inches. Some other rain amounts in the last 24 hours:
2.06 Bluff Park
1.57 Pinson
1.07 Shelby County Airport

ROAMING: 112 in Death Valley was the hottest in the USA yesterday.
Cold spots this morning 24 at Spincich, Michigan and 28 at Anaktuvuk
Pass, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure did enjoy spending Thursday and
Friday with James Spann at the Southeast States Severe Weather
Symposium. It is an annual event. My Little Miss Molly greets me with
great enthusiasm even if I have gone to the supermarket for 30
minutes. After being gone two full days, I got home close to midnight
last night and she almost took me down. She truly missed me and that
makes me feel good. Of course, I missed her a little bit too. She has
slept at least 10 hours today. On our afternoon walk, she heard a toy
gun and immediately cancelled her bathroom break and headed home. She
stayed hid during the big rain event. Life goes on.

Our Hope In Difficult Times

We all struggle. A family in turmoil, job loss, health issues, a mess we
helped create. We live in difficult times.

Facing tough times is different with Jesus Christ than without Him.
Does that sound too "churchy?" Too easy? Don't be dismayed or misled.

Our Hope In Difficult Times is the current sermon series at Hunter
Street Baptist Church. There is hope. You don't have to struggle alone.

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street, 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in
Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org or call 205.985.7295.

...Wet For The Weekend...

ARRGHHHHHH! No, that's not the sound of a frustrated meteorologist
who is ready for the low pressure system that has outstayed its
welcome to go away. It's Talk Like a Pirate Day!

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: A warm, moist airmass is still in place across
Alabama. Some spots could see a little sunshine this morning, but
rain and storms could develop at about anytime. About 70% of the area
will see some rain, with some folks getting a real tropical downpour
that could cause flooding.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: North Texas is at Alabama (11:20 kickoff at Bryant-
Denny Stadium); a passing shower or thunderstorm is likely during the
game, with temperatures hovering around 80 at kickoff, possibly
reaching the low to mid 80s during the game. Auburn will host West
Virginia tonight (6:45 p.m. kickoff at Jordan-Hare Stadium); that game
will be played under a cloudy sky with the risk of a few showers. And,
UAB is at Troy this afternoon (1:30 p.m. kickoff); showers or storms
are possible during the game with temperatures in the low 80s at
kickoff.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Hey folks, this same pattern may be with us through
much of the week ahead. Showers and storms will be commonplace in the
tropical airmass with these same downpours possible. Look for another
3-5 inches of rain over the next 5 days.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEKEND: A developing trough and approaching frontal
system may trigger widespread showers and storms next weekend before
allowing some drier air to finally move into the
state.

TROPICS: Fred's remnants just won't go completely away. The remnant
low will be near the Bahamas Sunday and South Florida Monday. It is
surrounded by dry air, but shear will relax, so there is a chance it
could become a tropical depression. The system midway between the
Antilles and Africa has a better shot at development, although the
global models have not been very bullish on this idea. We could see a
tropical depression form here over the weekend. The Atlantic is
eerily quiet for mid-September and we are grateful.

ON THIS DATE IN 1967: Air Force reconnaissance measures a central
pressure of 923 mb in Hurricane Beulah over the Gulf of Mexico as the
storm threatened the Texas coast. These readings were the second
lowest aircraft measurements recorded up until that time.
Fortunately, Beulah weakened somewhat before she made landfall
landfall between Brownsville and the mouth of the Rio Grande on the
morning of the 20th. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter

...Too Much Rain...

WATERLOGGED: Multiple days of numerous tropical showers and storms
have produced average rain amounts of 2 to 4 inches (since Monday),
but some of the communities east of Birmingham were
inundated with 5 to 9 inches of rain with a six hour period last
night. Some 24 hour rain totals:

Trussville 8.70" (Bob Alvis in the Peppertree Subdivision)
Trussville 7.28" (J.B. Elliott's home in the northeast part of town)
Clay 6.16" (Skywatcher Wally Coker)
Argo 5.29" (Skywatcher John Brown)
Leeds 5.10" (NWS Coop Observer)
Trussville 4.50" (Skywatcher Justin Hindman)
Moody 3.75" (Matt Padget)
Helena 2.47" (NWS Coop Observer)
Pinson 2.41" (NWS Coop Observer)
Birmingham Airport 2.21"

THE DAYS AHEAD: Unfortunately, we see nothing to sweep out the
moisture anytime soon, meaning we will deal with scattered to numerous
showers and storms on a daily basis over the weekend, and all of next
week. The original idea of cooler and drier air moving into Alabama by
the middle of next week is off the table. Like recent days, the rain
won't be continuous, and the sun will peek out at times, but rain is
possible at any hour of the day and night, and the rain could be heavy
at times. Look for more pockets of flash flooding.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The chance of any one high school stadium getting
wet tonight is about one in three, so rain gear is in order. The sky
will be mostly cloudy, and temperatures will hover in the upper 70s
during the games. Tomorrow, North Texas is at Alabama (11:30 kickoff
at Bryant-Denny Stadium); the a passing shower or thunderstorm is
likely during the game, with temperatures hovering around 80 at
kickoff, possible reaching the low to mid 80s during the game. Auburn
will host West Virginia tomorrow night (6:45 p.m. kickoff at Jordan-
Hare Stadium); that game will be played under a cloudy sky with the
risk of a few showers. And, UAB is at Troy tomorrow afternoon (1:30
p.m. kickoff); showers or storms are possible during the game with
temperatures in the low 80s at kickoff.

J.B. RETURNS MONDAY: We have had a blast at Mississippi State
University; thanks to everyone for their hospitality. J.B. and I will
be back in town tonight, and the Miss Molly stories will return in
this space Monday!

...Muggy, Unsettled Weather Continues...

TROPICAL AIR GOING NOWHERE: No major change is expected in our weather
through the weekend. A moisture laden airmass will hang over the
state, meaning a shower or thunderstorm will be possible at just about
any time. On the positive side, there will be a few intervals of
sunshine along the way, and organized severe weather is not expected.
The rain could be heavy at times, however, due to the tropical nature
of the air. A few flash flood warnings could be required over the
weekend, but widespread flooding problems are not expected. No sign of
any serious weather changes early next week.

LOOKING FOR FALL WEATHER: The autumnal equinox is next Tuesday at 4:18
p.m. CDT; that is the day with 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of
darkness, when the sun is directly over the equator. Unfortunately,
the hopes of a shot of cool, dry air next week have faded, and it now
looks like our weather will remain warm and muggy through the entire
week. Showers and storms should become fewer in number during the
latter half of the week.

Auburn

risk of a few showers. And, UAB is at Troy tomorrow afternoon (1:30
p.m. kickoff); showers or storms are possible during the game with
temperatures in the low 80s at kickoff.

BIG TIME FLOODING EVENT: A cluster of tropical showers and storms
developed over the Birmingham metro late yesterday with very little
movement. There were multiple water rescues, and dozens of reports of
serious flooding across Jefferson and Shelby Counties. The total at
J.B. Elliott's home in Northeast Trussville was 6.63". Our Skywatcher
in Argo reported 5.29" of rain; other totals included 4.71" at Clay,
3.32" at Odenville, and 2.47" at Helena. Buck Creek was brief
overflowing Alabama Highway 261 in Helena, and major flooding reported
in Argo in Northeast Jefferson County
with almost one foot of water into businesses on Main Street.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm
development is not expected through early next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1752: The hurricane of 1752 was one of the most
devastating in Charleston's history. Although the number of lives lost
cannot be determined, a contemporary Boston press report, based on a
ship's officer's account, estimated that ninety-five people were
drowned. The maelstrom, which also struck surrounding areas, had many
long-term effects.

...Parade of Tropical Showers...

GREETINGS FROM STARKVILLE: J.B. Elliott and I am at the annual
Southeast Severe Storms Symposium on the campus of Mississippi State
University. This afternoon's sessions are mostly for broadcast
meteorologists; I spoke on the future of media meteorology. Tomorrow
will be an all-day event with a series of presentations, including one
by our own Dr. Tim Coleman. I am covering for J.B. today and tomorrow
(writing this from the symposium on my MacBook), so no Miss Molly
stories until Monday!

WET AT TIMES THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Alabama's weather simply won't
change much through the weekend; very moist air will continue to cover
the state, and a stacked low (both at the surface and aloft) will
continue to spin away to the west, keeping the weather unsettled for
the foreseeable future. Like recent days, the sun will peek out at
times, the rain won't be continuous, but a tropical shower is possible
at any hour of the day or night, and the rain could be heavy at times
due to the copious amount of moisture in place. A few flash flood
warning could be required, but widespread flooding is not expected.
Afternoon highs will be mostly in the low to mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Unfortunately, our hopes for cooler and drier air next week
are fading. Earlier this week, global computer models had suggested a
deep, long wave upper trough over the eastern U.S. by the middle of
next week, but now all models agree that the upper trough will be
limited to New England and the eastern part of Canada, which will keep
that cooler and drier air to the north.

So, we will maintain a decent chance of showers and storms for the
first half of the week, then becoming more scattered by Thursday and
Friday. As an upper ridge begins to build, it looks like we might
reach the mid to upper 80s late in the week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Showers are possible at high school games across
Alabama tonight and tomorrow night, so rain gear will be in order.
Temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 70s for the games.
Saturday, Alabama will host North Texas at Bryant-Denny Stadium in
Tuscaloosa (11:30 a.m. kickoff). Showers and storms are likely during
the game, with temperatures generally around 80 degrees. Auburn hosts
West Virginia at Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday night (6:45 p.m.
kickoff)... showers are possible during the game with temperatures in
the 75 to 79 degree range. UAB is at Troy Saturday afternoon (1:30
p.m. kickoff); showers or storms are likely during the game with
temperatures in the low 80s at kickoff.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: The Hurricane Bowl. The college footbll game
that didn't happen. University of Alabama football coach Bill Curry
made the decision not to fly his team to College Station, Texas to
play Texas A&M as Hurricane Gilbert moved acros the Gulf of Mexico.
The storm later moved into Mexico. At what would have been gametime,
viewers on ESPN watched as the announcers sat in an empty stadium
awash in beautiful blue skies and hot temperatures. The game would
eventually be played in December, and Alabama would win.

...An Ocean of Humidity...

NEW DAY, OLD FORECAST: Weather maps look very familiar this morning. A
stacked low (surface and aloft) is spinning away over the Ark-La-Tex
region, and vast amounts of moist air are being transported into
Alabama, setting the stage for more unsettled weather in the days
ahead. We will once again forecast a good chance of occasional showers
and thunderstorms statewide today, with a few heavy downpours possible
in this tropical air. The rain won't last all day, but it could rain
at any time.

The synoptic scale pattern will change very little through the
weekend, meaning we will have to maintain a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms on a daily basis through Sunday. The sun will peek out a
few times each day, and afternoon highs will be mostly in the low to
mid 80s. While widespread flooding is not expected, a few flash flood
warnings could be required.

NEXT WEEK: Same routine early next week, with scattered to numerous
showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday. Some global computer
models have been advertising a potential setup for strong to severe
thunderstorms across the Deep South Tuesday as a deep upper trough
forms west of the state. That will push a cold front through here
Tuesday night or Wednesday, and should finally bring a break in the
humidity with cooler nights during the latter half of the week.

CHILTON COUNTY TORNADO: A small, EF-0 tornado touched down briefly
yesterday in the Lomax community, just north of Clanton. The tornado
had a width of only 30 yards, and the damage path was 2/3 miles.
Damage was minimal; just a few downed limbs and some damage to a metal
shed. This small spin-up was in a tropical rain band, much like the
spiral bands we experience with a tropical storm that has moved inland
from the Gulf. In yesterday's case, the low (both at the surface and
aloft) is west of Alabama, around Shreveport, and although it was
never a tropical storm, or even a tropical depression, the impact is
very similar. And, these kind of small tornadoes are almost impossible
to detect on radar due to their low topped nature and short life.
There was no tornado warning during yesterday's event.

TROPICAL DOWNPOURS: Some of the heaviest rain yesterday was over
Northeast Alabama during the day, and Northwest Alabama at night. Our
Skywatcher in Northeast Etowah County, in the small community of
Scrougeout, reported 2.66" yesterday and a storm total of 3.80".
Nearly stationary storms last night were responsible for some flooding
over Winston, Lawrence, Colbert, Franklin, and Lauderdale counties. In
Haleyville, a car was nearly submerged in water along Airport Road
near Posey Field. A few roads were closed over Lauderdale county for a
while last night due to flooding. To the south, Montgomery County was
under a flash flood warning for a couple of hours; the official rain
total at Danelly Field was 1.52".

...Tropical Showers Continue...

STORMS FALLING IN LOVE WITH ALABAMA: Yes, this is better than a
drought. I believe most anybody would agree with that. We got a clear
indication this morning from Vic Bell, the 33/40 Skywatcher for
Scrougeout in NE Etowah County. He has already received 54.38 inches
of rain this year as compared to only 26.79 at this same time in 2007
during our first-class drought.
It looks like the good rain events will continue, at least through the
weekend with showers and thunderstorms prominent every day and even
numerous at times. The latest guidance that tries to help us with rain
amounts is pointing to around 3-4 inches of additional rain between
now and late Sunday. The plus side to all of this is the more friendly
daytime temperatures, mostly in the low to mid 80s. It appears that
the Friday night high school football games may have to really watch
for some showers. We will have a more complete forecast in the
editions tomorrow both for Thursday and Friday night high school games
and Saturday college games.

WHY ALL THE RAIN: This is tropical in nature. A low-pressure system
formed over the NW Gulf and never became a formal tropical depression,
but as it moved inland it pulled a tremendous amount of deep tropical
air into Alabama, so that is what we are dealing with now. That low
was centered over Arkansas today and there was also a low-pressure
area aloft. It appears that the surface low will not move much. In
fact, it may meander around a bit and still be over Louisiana Friday.

WHEN WILL ALL THIS END: We are looking for some cooler air to reach
Alabama early next week and by the middle of next week we should have
some low temperatures in the lower 60s with highs only in the mid 70s.
One of our models points to a low of 58 next Wednesday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is low potential for the remnants of Fred to
reach tropical storm strength again. He was way out in the open
Atlantic. Over in the Eastern Atlantic there is another broad area of
low pressure. Development of that will be slow. The big thing in
tropical news is Hurricane Ivan that made landfall near Gulf Shores at
2:10 a.m. five years ago today. Winds were estimated to 130 mph and
Gulf Shores and Pensacola were hard hit. I spent the entire day at the
33/40 Weather Office doing frequent radio updates and helping update
the BLOG. Literally thousands of trees were uprooted and 90 mph winds
were reported as far north as Demopolis. Amazing rain amounts with
Birmingham receiving a record 9.81 inches.

ELSEWHERE: We had a report from Columbus, Mississippi of 8.50 inches
of rain yesterday and overnight, including 3.25 inches since midnight.
Around the USA, 103 was the hot spot in McAllen, Texas and lowest this
morning 33 at Bryce Canyon, Utah and 28 at Eagle, Alaska. Frost is
forecast for Caribou, Maine tomorrow night with a low of 30.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The thunder was so faint that I could
not hear it, but Little Molly (with her sonar ears) did pick it up and
she started shaking in bed late last night. Again this morning, a very
faint distant thunder and she hid behind my easy chair in the corner
of the living area. I had to really coax her to go outside for her
bathroom break. In fact, I had to wave a treat at her. Even then she
was very conscious and as soon as she did her duty she did a 180 and
headed back home. Life goes on.

...Keep The Umbrella Handy...

A BLANKET OF MOIST AIR: Surface dewpoints will remain generally in the
70 to 75 degree range across Alabama, about as high as they get as a
very moist airmass is parked over our state. The moist air is being
pulled northward by a stacked upper air and surface low west of here,
over Northeast Louisiana. This feature will simply drift around that
same region for the next days, meaning our weather won't change much
through Friday. We will continue to highlight occasional showers and
thunderstorms through Friday, with potential for heavy rain at times
with the heavier tropical downpours. While we are not expected
widespread flooding problems, a few flash flood warnings could be
required along the way. And, showers could come at just about any hour
of the day or night in this kind of air.

THE WEEKEND: Still nothing to bring in drier air, so we will have to
dodge
showers and a few thunderstorms over the weekend. The showers might
be slightly fewer in number as the old tropical low becomes broad and
diffuse, but no doubt it will rain at times both Saturday and Sunday.
Away from the showers, there should be intervals of sunshine, and
highs will be in the low to mid 80s. We will put out our first weather
forecast for the football games
tomorrow morning.

NEXT WEEK: Sure looks like the pattern is changing next week; most
global models develop a long wave upper trough over the eastern half
of the nation early in the week, which will drive a rather sharp cold
front down this way by Tuesday morning. Cooler and drier air will
follow the front on Wednesday, and it sure looks like we will be down
in the 50s by daybreak Thursday. Maybe even some upper 40s for the
colder spots across North Alabama.

FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY: The center of Hurricane Ivan moved on shore near
Gulf Shores around 300 AM on Thursday, September 16, 2004. Maximum
sustained winds at landfall were estimated to be near 130 MPH, with a
minimum pressure of 943 millibars. Hurricane Ivan will compare with
the worst hurricanes to ever to affect the Alabama Gulf Coastal Region
since 1900, including Frederic in September 1979, Opal in October
1995, and the September 1926 Hurricane. Hurricane Ivan moved inland
maintaining hurricane strength to near Uniontown (Perry County) around
11 AM. Ivan was downgraded to a Tropical Storm at 1 PM CDT as it was
approaching Centreville (Bibb County). Ivan then tracked across the
Birmingham Metropolitan Area between 4 and 8 PM. Ivan remained a
Tropical Storm until reaching northeast Alabama, where it weakened to
a Tropcial Depression around 10 PM.

Ivan produced estimated maximum winds of 60 to 80 mph generally
southwest of line from Prattville to Livingston. A few spots may have
reached 90 mph in this area. Most other locations across central
alabama had estimated maximum wind speeds of 50 to 60 mph, with a few
isolated spots reaching 75 mph. Tree and power line damage was
extensive.

...More Showers and Storms...

A SEA OF HUMIDITY: Feels like a sauna bath out there on the great
Alabama countryside today. The humidity is high and it will stay that
way for several days. The very moist air is not only at the surface,
but upper air soundings from Birmingham this morning show that the
very moist air is almost 20,000 feet deep.

All of this translates to more showers and thunderstorms. The tropical
low that moved out of the Gulf of Mexico was centered along the
Louisiana/Mississippi border between Monroe and Natchez this morning.
It will slowly move further north and maybe NE. It is a lazy low-
pressure area, not moving very much at all. The latest projections
keep it almost stationary for the next 24 hours. In an air mass of
this type, it is not difficult to forecast showers and thunderstorms,
but the timing is another story. With moist air still moving inland
from the Gulf, clusters of showers and thunderstorms spread northward.
this means that the rain will not be continuous, so there are times
when we can get several hours break.

The storms yesterday set off some flash flooding in Tallapoosa County
with several roads covered with water in Camp Hill where there was
2.49 inches of rain. Some other notable rain amounts:

3.35 Robrtsdale
1.20 Evergreen
1.15 Jasper
1.42 Falkville
1.62 Huntsville
1.88 Montgomery
2.24 Mobile

We still expect somewhere between 2-4 inches of rain. It may be more
like 2-3 inches. We think the most prominent showers and thunderstorms
will continue off and on through at least Thursday, thinning out a bit
on Friday and becoming more scattered by Saturday. This is going to be
a long drawn out event and we will have to keep mention of showers and
thunderstorms at least through next Tuesday.

TROPICAL: Shazam! We all of a sudden have three disturbed areas at
the same time. A large area was from the SE Bahamas NE to near
Bermuda. Upper-level winds are unfriendly. Nearly halfway across the
Atlantic, the bones of Hurricane Fred are still hanging on. Conditions
could become slightly favourable for redevelopment. James will be
rooting for him. Finally, in the far East Atlantic, another disturbed
area and development, if any, will be slow.

DROUGHT BUSTING: The sudden onslaught of substantial rain across Texas
can be credited to the same weather system that has given us rain. It
is amazing that as much as 10 inches of rain has fallen in part of
that area in the last 7 days. However, a week of rain does not a
drought break, but it helps. For example, Corpus Christi has received
5 inches of recent rain, but still 13 inches deficit for the year.

ROAMING: High temperatures in Baghdad around 99 for the next several
days. The worst of their summer is over. 103 the USA hotspot Monday at
Gila Bend, Arizona (pronounced Hela Bend). Chilly spots this morning:
30 Truckee, California and 29 Eagle, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When I took Little Miss Molly out the
front door for her final bathroom break around midnight, I picked her
up and had a little nose-to-nose talk. I warned her to not look for
the varmint that had raced out from between our house and our neighbor
the night before. Low and behold, immediately she raced to between our
houses pulling me like a kite to see what she could find. Whatever it
was, was no where to be seen and I was very happy. Life goes on.

...A Big Wet Down...

TROPICAL DOWNPOURS: We are still looking at a very wet weather pattern
for Alabama and the Deep South for the rest of the week, as a tropical
surface low just hangs around the Mississippi River, somewhere between
Vicksburg and Memphis. The air over Alabama will feature surface
dewpoints in the 72 to 76 degree range, almost like a tropical rain
forest. And, with a decent amount of upward motion in the atmosphere,
we will be dealing with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms on a
daily basis through Friday. These tropical showers and produce lots of
rain in a short amount of time; we are projecting additional rain
amounts of 2 to 4 inches statewide for the next three days. Some spots
could see more, and a few flash flood warnings are certainly possible.
Daytime temperatures will remain below average, with highs mostly in
the 77 to 81 degree range due to the clouds and rain.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The surface low to the west of the state will slowly
dissipate by the end of the week, and we believe showers over the
weekend will become fewer in number. Still, a moist airmass will hang
over Alabama, and a few showers are possible on Saturday and Sunday.
But, we should see at least a few intervals of sunshine with highs
back in the low to mid 80s.

TROPICS: The remnants of Hurricane Fred show up in the middle of the
Atlantic basically with a swirl of low clouds on satellite images, and
regeneration doesn't seem likely at this point. The rest of the
Atlantic basin is quiet for now.

MONDAY'S RAIN: Flash flood warnings were required for Chambers and
Tallapoosa counties yesterday; authorities in Camp Hill reported a
number of roads flooded during the afternoon hours. Rain totals
included 2.24" at Mobile, 2.07" at Huntsville (a new daily record
rainfall total for September 14), 1.88" at Montgomery, 1.68" at
Decatur, 1.35" at Troy, 1.12" at Inverness (SKYCAM), and 1.05" at
Jasper (SKYCAM).

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Hurricane Marilyn strikes Virgin Islands. It hit
the U.S. Virgin Islands as a strong category 2 storm with top winds of
115 mph. The strongest, most damaging part of the storm passed
directly over St. Thomas Island. It caused 8 deaths and $1.5 billion
in damages.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Unusual September Weather...

RAIN IN THE FORECAST EVERY DAY: Supposedly we are getting into what
is traditionally the driest time of the year in Alabama, especially
late September and
October

Not so this week as we have some mention of rain or storms in the
forecast all week and at least some mention of rain into early next
week. We believe that the main
showers and storms producing the biggest amount of rain will be
through at least Wednesday and maybe Thursday. There is still a good
chance of showers and storms on Friday.

HOW MUCH RAIN: The model guidance that tries to give us some estimate
on rain amounts, has varied lately. So often we have to use our best
judgment. Here in Central Alabama, we are looking for rain amounts
between 2-4 inches from tonight through Thursday. Probably the heavier
amounts will be Tuesday and Wednesday when we should exceed 2 inches
for that 48-hour period.

The reason for all the rain is a low-pressure area that formed over
the NW Gulf of Mexico and an upper-level low centered over Texas. The
surface low was over Central Louisiana this afternoon. It will work
its way toward North Mississippi and North Alabama and move little
after that over the weekend. These low-pressure areas that come out of
the Gulf of Mexico are always overloaded with moisture and are always
some our best rain producers. We believe there will be a decrease in
showers and storms over the weekend.

The extensive cloudiness and showers will hold the old thermometer in
check and most high temperatures will be around the 80-degree mark. We
are looking for only upper 70s tomorrow.

DROUGHT BREAKERS: Amazing how extreme drought areas of Central and
South Texas have received so much rain lately. San Antonio has
received 5 inches in the last several days and some parts of the
drought area even more. A number of flash flood reports coming out of
North and Central Texas this afternoon. A wide area extending from
East Texas across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama could
have some flash flood problems for the next couple of days.

TROPICAL WEATHER: It is a non-story for today. What was once
Hurricane Fred is only a skeleton low-pressure area in the open
Atlantic. This is an unusual tropical year because long-term records
over many, many years show that tropical storms and hurricanes reach
their peak around September 10.

GLOBAL NOTES: 3.85 inches of rain at San Juan, 3.09 inches at Tyler,
Texas in the last 24 hours. 107 was the hottest in the USA Sunday in
Death Valley. Cold spots this morning 33 at Saranac Lake, NY and
Buckland, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am not sure I should even try to tell
this story, because I am afraid it will not be believed. Last night
toward midnight, I took Molly out the front door for her final
bathroom break. At that instant, a dark black form rushed out from
between our house and our neighbor next door and sped across the
traffic circle. It was not a rabbit, a cat or a dog. It was moving
like a seal or a walrus trying to avoid a polar bear. It was about the
size of Molly and she went absolutely berserk. She was jerking so hard
on the leash trying to get to the thing that I was afraid that she
would hurt her neck. I manually picked her up and held her. Her little
tiny heart was pounding away like a water pump. I have never seen her
so upset and barking so loud. I got the distinct impression that that
little girl was ready to give her life to protect me. We never did
know what it was. A neighbor suggested an armadillo. When I finally
got Molly under control and back in the house, she raced from backdoor
to front door continuously trying to keep watch. Life goes on—scary at
times.

...A Wet Week...

The much ballyhooed wet weather pattern we have been talking about
since late last week continues to come together. Areas west of I-65
in Alabama should see 3-4 inches of rain over the next five days, with
amounts tapering to about two inches on average near the Georgia border.

MAP ROOM: On the weather maps this morning, we find an upper level
low pressure system over eastern Texas, with an associated surface low
just north of Houston. To the east of the lows, a plume of deep
tropical moisture is spreading up into Mississippi and Alabama.
Disturbances rotating around the circulation of the upper low will
help to spark areas of showers and storms that will move northward.
This means a pretty wet forecast through the end of the work week. It
will be hard to time specific waves of precipitation, but it looks
like the upper low or trough will remain across the area until
Thursday. Suffice to say that rain chances will be high through at
least Thursday, running at least 50 percent each day.

HEADING TOWARD THE WEEKEND: The models continue to advertise a more
zonal, or west to east flow as we head toward Friday, and this will
mean a trend to drier conditions. The moisture that is over the area
will still remain, as there seems to be nothing to scour it out.
Scattered showers and storms will stay in the forecast into the weekend.

TROPICS: The remnants of Fred continue to be buffeted by extremely
strong wind shear which is able to tear apart any thunderstorms that
try to get organized. This hostile environment will continue along
the remnant low's tracks. The disturbance in the eastern Atlantic
will encounter decreasing shear over the next day or so, and slow
development is possible.

ONE YEAR AGO: The Chicago area was staggering under a double whammy
of tropical moisture from Pacific tropical storm Lowell and Hurricane
Ike. On the 13th, O'Hare recorded its greatest one day rainfall total
with 6.64 inches in the rain bucket.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 190: Tonight, the topic is the tropics, with
Rob Lightbown, the principal at Crown Weather, which specializes in
the tropics, with a great tropical webpage. Listen to tonight's show
at www.WeatherBrains.com, as well as all of the archived shows. You

the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1928: Residents of South Florida were confused over
conflicting reports about a major hurricane that was pushing northwest
through the Bahamas. The San Felipe Hurricane had already caused over
1,000 deaths in the Caribbean. As they tracked the advisories,
residents believed that the storm was going to pass south of them.
The hurricane would roar over Lake Okeechobee with winds of 130 mph,
swamping the four foot dike around the southern end of the shallow
lake. Towns like Moore Haven, South Bay and Belle Glade were
inundated. A total of 1,836 people died in Florida, making it the
state's worst natural disaster in history. Follow my weather history

...Wet Forecast...

The sure way to make it not rain at a football game is to forecast
rain and then go and purchase $40 rain suits. At least at the Auburn,
Alabama and UAB games yesterday, that was the case. Very little, if
any rain fell at all three locations. Next weekend's games will
feature a continued chance of showers and storms.

LIGHT RAIN INCREASING: Like the Alabama football team yesterday, the
currently highly anticipated wet pattern has been slow to show up, but
it is beginning to control the field. In fact, the pattern that we
expected to develop yesterday was in fact setting up over North
Central Alabama, with overrunning light rain developing now generally
in the US-278 corridor from Hamilton to Gadsden. Heavier showers were
along the Mississippi border.

YOUR FORECAST: This pattern of persistent light rain over North
Central Alabama may well be the pattern for the afternoon. A similar
pattern will be with us for the next several days. The common thread
will be increasing rain chances as a non-tropical low near Houston
meanders through the Gulf States during the week ahead. It looks
like Tuesday may be the wettest day, with numerous showers and storms
and the potential for heavy rain. But rain chances will be around 50%
or higher each day this week through Friday. It looks like rain
chances will back off a bit as we head into the weekend, but since the
airmass never gets cleared out, scattered showers and storms will
still be around, along with fairly warm and humid conditions.

SO LONG FRED: Hurricane Fred made a hasty exit from the tropical
scene, as expected and was downgraded all the way to remnant low late
last night. That's the ultimate degradation for an aspiring tropical
system. Tough going ahead for the remnants and regenerations looks
very unlikely.

TROPICS: The tropical wave over the far eastern Atlantic will have a
long row to hoe if it is going to amount to anything tropically
speaking. Still, there is a chance, and we will monitor it. The Gulf
low is also in a hostile environment and development looks unlikely.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: Rob Lightbown of Crown Weather joins us
Monday night for episode 190. Have a question for the panel? Write us
at email@weatherbrains.com Download and listen starting late Monday
night at www.weatherbrains.com or on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter

ON THIS DATE IN 1843: The town of Port Leon, Florida cannot be found
on a modern map of the Sunshine State. On this date, a hurricane
inundated the town with a ten foot storm surge. Almost all of the
buildings in the town were destroyed. One person drowned in the town
and at least a dozen people were killed in surrounding areas. The
townspeople voted unanimously not to rebuild the town. The residents
moved upriver to higher ground and established the town of Newport.

...Wet Weather Is The Word...

RAIN WILL BE INCREASING: The weather system that we were depending on
to give us a lot of rain is still on the board, but it has been rather
slow to evolve. An upper low over Central Texas combined with a
developing low in the North Gulf were joining forces to bring a lot of
moist air into the SE states. So far, the most extensive rain with
this system has been to the west of Alabama. There was a lot of rain
Saturday in Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas. Indeed, even the critical
drought areas of Central and South Texas were getting some much needed
rain. They have been in an extreme drought for months. For the second
day in a row, San Antonio got more than 1 inch of rain and yesterday
San Angelo got 2.34 inches and Dallas/Ft. Worth 1.74.

HOW MUCH RAIN FOR ALABAMA: No much yesterday. Light showers were
having a struggle getting on shore into the south part of the state.
That will be changing starting today and lasting at least through
midweek. We still believe that Monday and Tuesday will be our main wet-
weather days. Some parts of Alabama could get 2-4 inches during that
time period. Even as late as Thursday, there should not be much of a
let up in the showers and thunderstorms. We will still be subject to
some showers and storms Friday and Saturday, just not as many.A lot of
this will depend on how the weather map evolves. The low that has been
hanging out over the NW Gulf of Mexico should be centered near the
Louisiana coast by late Tuesday and Wednesday. This will continue to
pump moist air northward into Alabama. A side benefit of the increased
cloud cover and the number of showers means our high temperatures for
much of the coming week will be around 80 to 82. On some days, we may
not even reach 80.

TROPICAL: The National Hurricane Center says that the low we have
been talking about over the NW Gulf of Mexico does not have a
favorable environment for tropical cyclone development. However, this
system should bring locally heavy rain to parts of the South/Central
and SE USA over the next few days. Meanwhile, what was once Hurricane
Fred is now a much weaker tropical depression Fred with sustained
winds down to 35 mph. He is way out in the Atlantic and of little or
no concern to anybody.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The high was only 73 in Dallas/Ft. Worth Saturday with heavy rain. New
Orleans received 2 inches of rain. The hottest in the USA Saturday was
117 in Death Valley. Coldest was 25 at the west entrance to
Yellowstone National Park and 32 in Deadhorse, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I took Little Miss Molly out the back
door for her long morning walk yesterday. She immediately went on full
alert because little Dino was walking along the track right by our
house and those two are lovebirds of the first order. They had a play
session and even kissed. Molly seemed to forget her bathroom duties
and instead wanted to follow Dino all the way. I have never seen two
little dogs so fond of each other in my whole life. Little Dino is
quite a bit younger than Molly and he does not weigh as much, but they
can really do some vigorous playing. Life goes on.
