KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...An Ocean of Humidity...

NEW DAY, OLD FORECAST: Weather maps look very familiar this morning. A
stacked low (surface and aloft) is spinning away over the Ark-La-Tex
region, and vast amounts of moist air are being transported into
Alabama, setting the stage for more unsettled weather in the days
ahead. We will once again forecast a good chance of occasional showers
and thunderstorms statewide today, with a few heavy downpours possible
in this tropical air. The rain won't last all day, but it could rain
at any time.

The synoptic scale pattern will change very little through the
weekend, meaning we will have to maintain a good chance of showers and
thunderstorms on a daily basis through Sunday. The sun will peek out a
few times each day, and afternoon highs will be mostly in the low to
mid 80s. While widespread flooding is not expected, a few flash flood
warnings could be required.

NEXT WEEK: Same routine early next week, with scattered to numerous
showers and thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday. Some global computer
models have been advertising a potential setup for strong to severe
thunderstorms across the Deep South Tuesday as a deep upper trough
forms west of the state. That will push a cold front through here
Tuesday night or Wednesday, and should finally bring a break in the
humidity with cooler nights during the latter half of the week.

CHILTON COUNTY TORNADO: A small, EF-0 tornado touched down briefly
yesterday in the Lomax community, just north of Clanton. The tornado
had a width of only 30 yards, and the damage path was 2/3 miles.
Damage was minimal; just a few downed limbs and some damage to a metal
shed. This small spin-up was in a tropical rain band, much like the
spiral bands we experience with a tropical storm that has moved inland
from the Gulf. In yesterday's case, the low (both at the surface and
aloft) is west of Alabama, around Shreveport, and although it was
never a tropical storm, or even a tropical depression, the impact is
very similar. And, these kind of small tornadoes are almost impossible
to detect on radar due to their low topped nature and short life.
There was no tornado warning during yesterday's event.

TROPICAL DOWNPOURS: Some of the heaviest rain yesterday was over
Northeast Alabama during the day, and Northwest Alabama at night. Our
Skywatcher in Northeast Etowah County, in the small community of
Scrougeout, reported 2.66" yesterday and a storm total of 3.80".
Nearly stationary storms last night were responsible for some flooding
over Winston, Lawrence, Colbert, Franklin, and Lauderdale counties. In
Haleyville, a car was nearly submerged in water along Airport Road
near Posey Field. A few roads were closed over Lauderdale county for a
while last night due to flooding. To the south, Montgomery County was
under a flash flood warning for a couple of hours; the official rain
total at Danelly Field was 1.52".
