...Moist Air And Soggy Earth...

SOAKED TO CAPACITY: I have been in weather work for eons and I cannot
remember when the Alabama countryside was as soggy as we are now in
September unless there was a tropical system involved.

But, no tropical system to blame it on. There was a low-pressure area
that formed over the NW Gulf of Mexico that may have been a cousin to
a tropical system. It moved inland a long time ago and has lolly-
gagged in areas west of Alabama forever. This afternoon, the low was
centered over Mississippi and since Alabama is on the east side of the
circulation, southerly winds continue to refuel the atmosphere
resulting in more showers and thunderstorms.

Do not look for much relief from the wet weather until the middle of
next week. Even then we will have some scattered showers and
thunderstorms, but fewer in number. The old thermometer will take
advantage of that and give us some higher afternoon temperatures in
the mid to upper 80s.
Meanwhile, through this weekend and early next week our highs will
mostly be in the lower 80s.

The National Weather Service has a number of Central Alabama counties
under a Flash Flood Watch until midnight tonight. This includes places
like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston. Enormous amounts of rain
have fallen over the area starting mainly on Thursday. It would not
take a great deal of additional rain to set off some flash flooding.
Part of the Cahaba was in flood today and so was Village Creek in West
Birmingham. Before daybreak today, it was raining so hard in Autauga
County that railroad tracks were washed out 5 miles SE of Mountain
Creek. A train was derailed.

BIG RAIN AMOUNTS: Part of NE Jefferson County has received well over
9 inches of rain since Thursday. In the last 30 hours, Birmingham has
received 2.73 inches of additional rain and Tuscaloosa 2.72 inches. We
have an amazing rain surplus now for the Birmingham area. We have
already received 8.30 inches this month and the excess for the year
stands at 9.89 inches. Some other rain amounts in the last 24 hours:
2.06 Bluff Park
1.57 Pinson
1.07 Shelby County Airport

ROAMING: 112 in Death Valley was the hottest in the USA yesterday.
Cold spots this morning 24 at Spincich, Michigan and 28 at Anaktuvuk
Pass, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure did enjoy spending Thursday and
Friday with James Spann at the Southeast States Severe Weather
Symposium. It is an annual event. My Little Miss Molly greets me with
great enthusiasm even if I have gone to the supermarket for 30
minutes. After being gone two full days, I got home close to midnight
last night and she almost took me down. She truly missed me and that
makes me feel good. Of course, I missed her a little bit too. She has
slept at least 10 hours today. On our afternoon walk, she heard a toy
gun and immediately cancelled her bathroom break and headed home. She
stayed hid during the big rain event. Life goes on.

Our Hope In Difficult Times

We all struggle. A family in turmoil, job loss, health issues, a mess we
helped create. We live in difficult times.

Facing tough times is different with Jesus Christ than without Him.
Does that sound too "churchy?" Too easy? Don't be dismayed or misled.

Our Hope In Difficult Times is the current sermon series at Hunter
Street Baptist Church. There is hope. You don't have to struggle alone.

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street, 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in
Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org or call 205.985.7295.
