...Rain Wanted...

J.B.'s afternoon forecast package yesterday brought the continued
seriousness of the drought situation across Alabama into very sharp
focus. The rainfall deficits at other stations across North and
Central Alabama are becoming alarming again. Here in Birmingham, we
have been whittling away at a nice surplus we had built up as of about
three weeks ago. Yesterday was the first day with measurable rain at
the Birmingham Airport since the 14th of June. As J.B. pointed out,
Montgomery is now down 9.07 inches for the year, Huntsville 9.60
inches, Anniston 7.25 inches and Tuscaloosa 6.69 inches.

TONIGHT AND SUNDAY: It has been another day of active storms across
Central Alabama. For tonight, showers and storms will continue until
we lose the heating of the day. As on t he past couple of mornings,
we may see more early morning storm development across the area. This
is due to a fairly strong mid-level trough located across the
Mississippi Valley. This trough is trying to cut off into an upper
low. The trough should move eastward by tomorrow. This may allow the
focus for storms to be a little further south across South Central
Alabama tomorrow afternoon.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We should settle into a fairly typical summertime
pattern by Monday, that will be with us the rest of the week.
Temperatures will be on the rise by the end of the week, when we could
see some middle 90s for highs.

COULD BERTHA THREATEN THE U.S. EAST COAST? Tropical Storm Bertha is
some 1,350 miles east of the Windward Islands this afternoon. It is
moving west at about 21 mph. There are
increasing indications that the forecasted weakness in the Atlantic
Ridge may not recurve the storm after all. The Canadian takes it to a
point northeast of the island by next Friday. The GFDL follows
basically the same course, just a little faster, taking the system to
near Bermuda by Friday. The GFS puts it north of the islands by
Tuesday night and has it threatening North Carolina briefly before
turning it out to sea. Just what will happen is up in the air for
now, and will be interesting to watch. The storm has held its own
over 25C water, but that will be warming to 28C by Tuesday and
intensification to a hurricane is likely. After that, the amount of
wind shear it encounters will determine the eventual intensity. The
GFDL has it as a Category One hurricane threatening Bermuda.

ON THIS DATE IN 1805: Admiral Robert Fitzroy, the founder of the
first English weather warning system, was born on this date. A sea
captain for many years, Fitzroy knew the importance of weather for
seamen. Fitzroy divided England and Ireland into three districts and
collected weather observations by telegraph. The reports were
received at Lloyds of London. Not the famous insurance company, but a
coffee house where sea captains congregated. He would go on to refine
the system and begin issuing weather forecasts for the newspapers.
His forecasts kicked off a storm of controversy as his critics claimed
that the forecasts did not have scientific merit. All of the rules he
had deduced from his extensive observations were compiled into The
Weather Book in 1862.

...Another Sky Show Tonight...

I hope that you got to enjoy one of the great
Independence Day fireworks last evening, like Thunder on the
Mountain. In case you didn't, Nature has another planned for
tonight. Not of the meteorological variety, but rather of the
astronomical type. Look to the western sky tonight after sunset, and
you will see a celestial gathering. A slender crescent moon will join
Saturn, Mars and the bright star Regulus. The moon will make a
graceful exit from the gathering after Sunday night, but by Thursday,
Saturn and Mars will make their closest approach in the next fourteen
years.

BERTHA: Bertha is boogying across the Atlantic this
morning, 1,600 miles east of the Leeward Islands. The system has been
traveling over cooler water, so it has not intensified. That same
trend should continue through today, but Bertha will strengthen
slightly before it encounters increasing wind shear early in the
week. A weakness is till expected to form in the Atlantic ridge and
allow the storm to recurve harmlessly out to sea in about three days.
But that is not written in stone. Recent model runs have moved the
storm north of the islands and generally toward Bermuda.

Bertha is the earliest tropical storm to form this far to
the east. I am afraid that the early arrival of a Cape Verde type
storm this early could be an ominous sign for the Atlantic Hurricane
Season. NOAA researcher Stanley Goldenberg has shown that seasons
that have had a June or July tropical storm form in the eastern
Caribbean or Atlantic have all have had at least normal Atlantic
hurricane activity for the year.

CLOSER TO HOME: The same frontal boundary to the north
that triggered the showers and storms on Friday is still to our north
today. It will trigger more showers and storms today across the
area. Some of them could be on the heavy side again, like yesterday.
Be on the lookout for dark clouds building in your area, and take
shelter when they do. Lightning is a terribly killer, and microbursts
can cause wind damage. We will take the rain, however. Expect more
of the same on Sunday.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By Monday, the boundary should wash out
to our north, leaving us in a rather soupy airmass here in Alabama.
Moisture levels will be high through the coming week, and there will
be a chance of scattered showers and storms across the region each
afternoon and evening. Temperatures will be right around normal for
this time of year, with highs ranging between 90 and 92 and morning
lows around 70-72.

ON THIS DATE IN 1916: Mobile recorded its highest storm
tide ever, with an 11.6 foot surge on the St. Francis Street Wharf.
The tide was a result of the 1916 hurricane that made landfall near
Pascagoula, Mississippi. Water inundated the wholesale district in
Mobile, penetrating four blocks inland from the waterfront. More in
today's Alabamawx.com blog.

HELP US FIND "FOREVER FAMILIES"
FOR ALABAMA'S FOSTER CHILDREN

Heart Gallery Alabama helps find families for the 270+ children
currently in Alabama's foster care system who are waiting for
their "Forever Families."

Heart Gallery, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, recruits professional
photographers to capture the unique spirit of each child. They
interview the children and place their images and voices on a website
(http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com) and in traveling exhibits
throughout the state where prospective adoptive families can learn
more about them. Heart Gallery Alabama has helped find a
permanent home for 70 children.

Statistics show that children with involved fathers are more confident,
better able to deal with frustration, more likely to mature into
compassionate adults and to have a higher self esteem.

We ask that you consider becoming a permanent home for a child.
Or consider making a tax-deductible donation to help our mission.
Any donation will help us find permanent homes for these children.

Please call (205) 445-1293 or http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com

===================================================================

CHANCE OF RAIN INCREASING: Scattered thunderstorms developed over NW
Alabama before noon and a few of those became strong. In fact, the
National Weather Service in Huntsville issued several Severe
Thunderstorm Warnings and Significant Weather Alerts for some
Tennessee Valley counties. Further south, the showers and
thunderstorms were widely spaced, but by early this afternoon they
were hit and miss all the way down to the coast, although only a small
percent of the landscape was affected.

Most backyard picnics were dry today, except maybe in the extreme NW.
For the many locations that will have 4th of July fireworks tonight,
we believe that showers and thunderstorms will be widely spaced and
most communities will not get an interruption. However, a few will, so
watch out not only for the showers, but also the lightning.

OUR BEST CHANCE OF RAIN: Probably Saturday, especially during the
morning and midday. It looks like scattered showers and thunderstorms
can be expected every day even through most of next week, although
they should thin out later in the week. With more showers and
cloudiness, high temperatures should hang around mostly in the mid to
upper 80s with some communities topping 90. We think the hottest days
here in Central Alabama will be Monday and Tuesday with lower 90s.

RAIN SCORECARD: A drought is sneaky in some ways. We may think that
we are doing okay on rain, but when it lets up it does not take long
to drift back into significant rain shortfalls. Here is a list as of
this morning. All of these amounts are deficiencies:

9.10 inches at Montgomery
9.62 Huntsville (one of the driest places)
7.11 Anniston
6.51 Tuscaloosa
8.48 Muscle Shoals

The exception to all of this is Birmingham Airport where the excess as
of today was 1.41 inches, however, that excess is being chipped away
because at one time we were well over 3 inches excess.

NOT SO IN 1916: A dying tropical storm was dumping heavy rain across
Alabama. In fact, two dying tropical storms dumped 20.16 inches on
Birmingham. That is a monthly rain record that still stands.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: The California wildfires are too horrible to think
about. Media reports indicate that 1/2 million acres have burned or
about 100 square miles. Since the fires started several weeks ago, the
total number of fires has reached an estimated 17,000. A lot of those
were ignited by dry lightning.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Tropical Storm Bertha was about 385 miles
west of the Cape Verde Islands out in the Eastern Atlantic. Sustained
winds were around 50. She may grow a bit stronger over the next couple
of days. Along the Alabama/NW Florida beaches, showers and
thunderstorms will be more frequent than usual, especially on Sunday
and Monday. High temperatures 86 to 89.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure hope your dog or cat is not as
frightened of fireworks and lightning as Little Miss Molly. That
little girl slept until 12:00 noon today...the latest she has ever
slept in the almost six years we have had her. I wonder if that little
rascal heard us talking about fireworks and decided she better store
up some sleep ahead of time. Tonight when those neighborhood
firecrackers go off, she will head for one of her many hiding places.
Life goes on and I hope it will be for a long time......

...A Few Afternoon Showers...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA: Time for a long holiday weekend as we pause
and celebrate our great nation's birthday. Today's weather will be
pretty routine for the Fourth of July in Alabama; weather conditions
will be hot and muggy, and we will have the risk of a few scattered
showers and thunderstorms during the peak of the daytime heating
process. The best chance of a shower or storm will come from about
1:00 until 8:00 p.m., and the chance of any one spot getting wet is
about one in five. Most of the showers will be long gone by the time
the fireworks shows begin tonight around 9:00, and the high this
afternoon will be close to 90 degrees.

A blanket of moist air will hang over Alabama tomorrow and Sunday, so
scattered showers and storms will remain in the forecast. Highs over
the weekend will be somewhere between 87 and 90 degrees, and the
humidity will remain rather high, in contrast to the dry continental
air we enjoyed earlier this week. The moist air will stay in place
through much of next week, so the chance of scattered afternoon
showers and storms will remain in the forecast on a daily basis.

WATCHING BERTHA: Tropical storm Bertha in the far eastern Atlantic
should strengthen today, and has some potential to become a minimal
hurricane during the next 36 hours. Computer models continue the idea
of Bertha turning northward into a weakness in the sub-tropical ridge
north of the system, and this will keep the system over open water and
it seems to be no threat to land.

Elsewhere in the tropics, a tropical wave is moving through the
Caribbean this morning, but harsh upper air winds will prevent this
from developing in the short term. Some of the medium range computer
models track this into the western Gulf of Mexico next week, moving in
the general direction of the Texas Gulf Coast. Even with no
development, this might enhance rain and bring flooding potential to
the Texas coastal plain by the middle part of next week;

HOLIDAY WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will
form in the general area from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores
through Sunday; expect about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day with
highs in the mid to upper 80s. Sea water temperatures remain in the
mid 80s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Thousands of evacuated Florida residents would
never forget this Fourth of July as they spent the holiday uncertain
if they would have a home to return to. More than 120,000 people were
ordered to evacuate from homes in Flagler, Brevard and Volusia
counties as fire officials closely watched the winds to see which
direction the wildfires may head next. More than 480,000 acres of land
would be scorched the wildfires and 356 structures would be destroyed
by fire. Damages totaled $270 million. The fires were caused by
extreme drought across the South from Texas to Florida

Please call (205) 445-1293 or http://www.heartgalleryalabama.com

...Humidity Back In Style...

A WARM AND HUMID HOLIDAY: Yesterday the dew point across Alabama was
in the 50s in some areas and even the 40s in places like Birmingham.
This afternoon it was 65 in Birmingham and over 60 everywhere in the
state and even in the lower 70s down south. Translation: that means
moisture has increased rapidly since midday yesterday. Net result: a
few widely scattered showers formed over East/Central Alabama this
afternoon and even a few thunderstorms down in the SE part of the
state. We might as well get used to the higher humidity. Projections
are that it will stay that way even well into next week. We do not see
any major heat conditions as most highs will be in the 87 to 90-degree
range across Central Alabama. That temperature profile could last
through most of next week.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: The weather for tomorrow is of prime interest,
naturally. We look for afternoon highs between 88 and 90 across
Central Alabama. By 8:00 or 9:00 p.m., when most of the fireworks
start, the temperature should be around 78. Rain is the big question.
We are calling for widely separated showers and maybe a thunderstorm
during the afternoon and evening. The mathematical chance of that
occurring right where you are is rather small—probably less than 1 in 5.

BEST CHANCE OF RAIN: There will be an increase in showers and
thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday and some will linger into Monday. We
believe in the 48 hours encompassing all of Saturday and Sunday that
much of North and Central Alabama may get more than 1 inch of rain.
This is not bad news at all. Some areas are getting exceedingly dry.
Rain deficit numbers are between 7 and 9 inches in a number of North
Alabama locations.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL: We do not have space to run a lengthy story on travel
across the USA, so we invite you to check our weather blog where we
have the forecast for a large number of cities. The Storm Prediction
Center has only a small part of the USA under a slight risk of severe
weather for the fourth. It includes the north panhandle of Idaho and
the west half of Montana. That means all of the Montana mountains are
included.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We have a new tropical storm. Her name is Bertha.
She was positioned way out in the Eastern Atlantic at a low latitude
and seemingly going to pass south of the Cape Verde Islands. She was
moving WNW at 14 and should stay on that course for the next 36 hours.
She is expected to get stronger only slowly in the next day or so. The
long-range forecast places her in the mid-Atlantic curving more toward
the NW by next Tuesday and still not at hurricane strength. This
development is quite unusual, in fact, unprecedented for this time of
year. The only other named storm to form this far east so early was in
1966—it was also named Bertha.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Rain where it is not wanted included 3.36 inches at
Grand Rapids, Michigan in the last 24 hours, over 3 inches at Kansas
City and 3.30 at Jefferson City, Missouri. Will it never end? Coldest
temperature in the USA this morning was 34 at Embarrass, Minnesota and
Barrow, Alaska. Coincidence that both of those locations are at the
very north of those two states. 120 in Death Valley was the hottest.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Short on time and space today. I promise
to write more about Little Miss Molly tomorrow, but she got a big jolt
this morning that may prepare her for tomorrow night. Seems like a new
church is being built about 1 mile west of Molly's hangout. A big
blast from there this morning. Our whole house shook. Even my beloved
Apple computer monitor was shaking on my desk. I am going to try to be
available to that little girl tomorrow night when the firecrackers go
off, cuddling her and trying to get her to play ball. Life goes on.
