...A Nice Sunday...

GOOD MORNING! Clouds hung tough over Alabama on Saturday resulting in quite
a range of temperatures across the state. With a deck of low overcast at
Tuscaloosa, temperatures slowly climbed through the 60s like at most other
locations across the state. But when the clouds broke just before 3 pm, the
mercury got a quick boost to the afternoon reading of 76F there. Montgomery
also reached 76F, but all other central Alabama reporting stations were in
the 60s.

SUNDAY WEATHER: Today will start off a lot like yesterday, with extensive
clouds across most of the area. Those clouds will break up by late in the
morning, and sunshine will warm temperatures in most locations into the 70s.
As the cyclonic circulation moves further away from Alabama, Monday should
feature more sunshine and a warm up. In fact, temperatures will be above
normal through midweek, with dry conditions prevailing. A disturbance
passing to our north might cause a shower or two Thursday and Friday and
drop temperatures back just a notch. . High pressure will build in after
that, giving us a nice weekend.

RECORDS: The 8,08 inches of rain that fell at Allentown, PA was a record
for the date. Another 3.65 inches of rain fell at Washington's National
Airport, bringing their two day total to over seven inches.

IN THE TROPICS: Depression Number 22 met a premature demise last night as
all of the convection around the center weakened. The remnants still have
the potential to become a significant low pressure system later in the week
as it bumps up against strong high pressure that will be blocking it to the
north.

A note about 2005: if STD#22 becomes STS or TS Vince, it will be the
earliest the 20th named storm has formed. The only other 20th named storm
formed on October 26, 1933.

A TRIBUTE: One of the most famous weathermen in American history passed
away on this date in 1954. You might have heard of him, but I bet you
didn't know he was from Alabama. His name? Grady Norton.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Clouds are holding tough across Alabama this afternoon,
although western sections got some sunshine, especially early. A fresh
northerly breeze is blowing around low pressure over the Carolinas. Some
low clouds will form again late tonight Sunday promises to be a pleasant
day after a cool start. Partly sunny to partly cloudy conditions will
continue for the most part all week. A disturbance to the north of Alabama
might set off a few showers Wednesday.

TROPICS: Subtropical depression #22 formed in the Atlantic southeast of
Bermuda. It is expected to become a subtropical storm, and could acquire
tropical characteristics (e.g. a warm core circulation) during the next two
days as it moves generally west northwestward. It could be an eventual
player in weather for the Northeast United States. When it reaches storm
strength (either subtropical or tropical) it will be called Vince.
Elsewhere, there are no other significant disturbances.

2005 HURRICANE SEASON: We have already seen 19 named storms in the Atlantic,
rapidly approaching the record of 21 set in 1933. There have been 10
hurricanes. There were 10 in 1933. The record is 12 in 1969. There have
been 5 major hurricanes this year, the same as in 1933. The record for
major hurricanes is 7 set in 1950.

WARM, WET DAY IN THE EAST: A tropical airmass ahead of a strong cold front
is resulting in lots of warm and wet weather along the East Coast. Several
daily rainfall records were set on Friday, including: Washington's National
Airport with 3.63 inches, 3.5 inches at Dulles Airport, 2.28 inches at
Baltimore, 1.39 inches at Caribou and 3.97 inches at Harrisburg PA.

A major flooding event is setting up over much of the East Coast today. The
amount of moisture available to produce rainfall in running 400%-500% above
normal. This moisture is impinging on a strong frontal boundary that lies
just to the west of the coast. Numerous waves of low pressure are rippling
along the front, producing lots of heavy rain from the Carolinas to New
England. Numerous flash flood watches are in effect. The Yankees/Angels
Division Series game in New York City looks to be in jeopardy today because
of the rains.

Daily high records were not in jeopardy yesterday, as clouds and rain kept
down the maximums, but many daily record minimum temperatures were set this
morning. The low at Roanoke, VA was 68F. It was 64F in Blacksburg, VA.
Other records included Lynchburg 67F, Danville VA 69F, and Blacksburg, WV
with 64F. It was 74F in Columbia SC, and 69F in Albany NY.

ON THIS DATE IN 1871: Following a major summer drought, the town of
Peshtigo, Wisconsin was destroyed by a massive firestorm in just ten
minutes. The fire raced northward into Michigan. Nearly 1200 people died
in the Peshtigo Fire, including 600 in the town itself. The Peshtigo Fire
is the deadliest fire ever in American history. Other fires raged in parts
of Wisconsin, Michigan and other Great Lakes states, including the Great
Chicago Fire. More about the Chicago Fire in today's Weather Talk.

...Cloudy Start...

GOOD MORNING: Nineteen named storms so far in this extremely busy North
Atlantic Hurricane Season. And we still have over seven weeks to go. Some
interesting facts about the season so far in this weekend's forecast
packages. Like the fact that only three times have there ever been two Cat
Five hurricanes in the same year.

IN THE TROPICS: There is activity in the tropical Atlantic this morning,
but nothing is threatening to become serious at this time. There is a low
over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but it shows no signs of becoming a
tropical cyclone for now. There is a tropical wave east of the Windward
Islands, but any development of this system would be slow to occur. Look
for what is currently a non-tropical low northeast of the Leeward Islands to
gradually become a subtropical and perhaps a tropical storm as it moves
northwestward. In either case, it would be Vince, the twentieth named
storm. The GFS develops it into a formidable system by late in the week.
By Friday, it could be a real wind maker just east of Cape Cod. It could
affect eastern Maine.

OUR WEATHER: Cloudy start to the day with wraparound clouds around a low
over the Carolinas. There could be a little light rain this morning, but
sunshine should emerge by afternoon, over western sections first.
Seasonably cool conditions tonight will be followed by nice conditions for
much of the coming week.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: SMU will be at Legion Field to play UAB this evening.
It should be about 65 at kick off cooling to the upper 50s by the end of the
game. Dry weather.

ON THIS DATE IN 1837: The remnants of Racer's Storm moved off the South
Carolina coast and headed back into the open Atlantic where it intensified.
Off Cape Hatteras, the paddlewheeler Home was sunk. There were only two
life preservers onboard, a tragedy that prompted Congress to make the law
requiring all American boats to have one life preserver onboard for every
passenger.

AUTUMN FINALLY GETS HERE: Yes, we know, the official arrival was
earlier, but now you can tell it on the thermometer. This afternoon the cold
front marking the leading edge of the cooler air was near Montgomery and up
into East-Central Alabama. We have two things working on our weather today:
not only is the cooler air fighting its way southward, but tropical air is
moving up from the Gulf of Mexico over the south and east part of the state.
Rain was rather extensive this afternoon in areas east of I-65 and some of
it was locally heavy. Alexander City had already received 1.40 inches of
rain by early this morning.

As the cooler air edges its way southward, the rain over East
Alabama will gradually be removed, but some of it could linger into early
Saturday morning. After that, we look for generally dry weather through the
middle of next week with very pleasant afternoon temperatures and cool
nights. Lows will be consistently in the 50s, although we could have some
upper 40s Sunday morning in some of the North Alabama valleys.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games this evening, the kick -off
temperature will be in the 50s over the NW half of the state and in the 60s
in the east. Most of West Alabama should be dry, but games east of I-65 may
be played in some rain. For college football Saturday, SMU will be at Legion
Field to play UAB. It should be about 65 at kick off cooling to the upper
50s by the end of the game. Dry weather.

WHERE, OH, WHERE IS TAMMY? That non-lady had a mind of her own. Her
roadmap told her to go up the east coast to New England. Instead, she made a
left turn, came across Georgia, curved down across SE Alabama and went out
into the northern Gulf of Mexico. How could she misread so many road signs?
Not much left of her. Further down there is a broad low pressure area near
the SW coast of Florida. It is weakening and tropical cyclone formation is
unlikely. That other broad area of low pressure over the NE Gulf is merging
with a cold front. Part of that is Tammy's remains. No tropical
redevelopment is expected at this time.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: People up along that big river that flows across
extreme North Alabama are probably wearing light coats this afternoon. It
was near 60 degrees with brisk north winds. That is ideal short-sleeve shirt
weather for me...the USA low this morning was 18 at the west entrance to
Yellowstone National Park. Yesterday morning it was as low as 8 above zero
in SE Montana.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I wish you could have peeked in on the
big reunion last night. When I picked up my wife at the airport, we decided
to play a little trick on Little Miss Molly. I walked in from the garage to
the kitchen first as if I were the only one. Little Miss Molly hopped up on
the back of the couch with her tail swishing like a funeral home church fan
waiting for her treat. Judy waited another 30 seconds and stepped in the
garage door. Molly forgot the treat, jumped down off the couch, raced around
into the kitchen at breakneck speed. When she turned the corner, her rear
end skidded out of control and slammed into a cabinet. It sounded like she
was tap dancing on the tile floor. You never saw so much hugging and
cuddling. Earlier in the afternoon, I had asked Molly, "Where is Mommy?" She
immediately looked back over her shoulder at the garage door. Last night
Molly slept all night cuddled in Judy's arms. It was a great homecoming.
Life goes on.

...Weather Changes Are Ahead...

This will be a different kind of day for Alabama thanks to surge of much
cooler riding into the state on northerly winds. Temperatures should remain
in the 60s all day with a cloudy sky and periods of mostly light rain. The
rain will continue tonight at times, mainly along and east of I-65. Then
tomorrow, as low pressure lifts northeast up the Atlantic seaboard, the
clouds should finally move out of the state by midday with clearing by
afternoon. There could be a little lingering light rain early tomorrow over
east Alabama, but the rest of the weekend will be dry.

Temperatures will be very comfortable over the weekend, with highs in the
70s and lows in the 50s. Some of the colder spots Sunday morning might even
reach the upper 40s.

The first half of next week looks rain-free with temperatures at or slightly
above normal values. Looks like our next surge of cool air is about seven
days away.

FOOTBALL: For high school games tonight, some light rain is possible mainly
for games played over the eastern half of the state. Temperatures should be
in the 60s.

UAB will host SMU at Legion Field tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. The sky
should be mostly fair with a kickoff temperature of 68 degrees. The mercury
will drop to near 60 by the end of the game.

TROPICS: A surface low pressure area is over the southeast Gulf of Mexico.
It will move northeast, toward the Florida peninsula today. We will watch
this for signs of organization today. A tropical wave about 900 miles east
of the Windward Islands could develop into a tropical depression in coming
days. Tammy dissipated over south Alabama last night.

PINCH HITTER: J.B. Elliott is taking the day off; the daily Miss Molly
adventure will return tomorrow.

COMPLEX FORECAST: J.B. picked a good day to be away from the forecast
office. Lots of issues to deal with, and several possible pitfalls in the
forecast for the next 38 hours. But, the end result is a big change to
cooler weather for all of Alabama; the coolest temperatures we have seen
since spring.
We are forecasting a high of only 69 degrees tomorrow; if that verifies that
will be our coolest maximum temperature since May 30.

TROPICAL MISCHIEF: We have two tropical systems that will keep the sky
cloudy and our weather wet at times through tomorrow. The broad circulation
of tropical depression Tammy is over southeast Alabama, and will continue to
bring some light rain at times this afternoon.
We will forecast a good chance of rain tonight thanks to a strong cold front
moving through, teaming up with moisture from another tropical disturbance
moving through the eastern Gulf of Mexico. At the moment that new system is
not especially organized, but it is not out of the question that a tropical
storm develops. One way or another, this new mass of moisture will move up
through north Florida, and then up the Atlantic coast over the weekend.

A COOL CHANGE: We should stay in the 60s all day tomorrow with a cloudy sky
and the continuing chance of light rain. The most widespread rain tomorrow
should be over the eastern half of the state, with rain more spotty over the
western counties. There is a chance some of the rain could linger into
tomorrow evening, setting up the possibility of a little rain at some of the
high school football games, especially east of I-65.

THE WEEKEND: A trailing upper air disturbance over Mississippi could very
well keep clouds in place during the day Saturday, but at this time we don't
expect any rain. Sunshine returns on Sunday, and temperatures will remain
very pleasant. Looks like we are headed for the low 50s early Sunday, and if
the sky does indeed clear then some of the colder spots over north Alabama
should dip into the upper 40s.

NEXT WEEK: At this time we are expecting rain-free weather for most of
Alabama next week, with temperatures near normal for mid-October.

BIG TIME COLD/SNOW: The mercury dropped to 8 degrees this morning at Baker,
Montana, where there is a thick blanket of snow on the ground. Williston,
North Dakota reported 14 degrees, a new record low for the date. Parts of
North Dakota have up to two feet of snow on the ground, and the NWS in
Bismarck reports this is their earliest major snowstorm on record. Parts of
Interstate 94 remain closed through Montana and North Dakota. Ten National
Guard soldiers with heavy equipment were out rescuing stranded people. In
Minot, a shelter also was set up at an old armory. The Minot Air Force Base
required only essential personnel to report for duty.

COMING AT US FROM TWO DIRECTIONS: We will have to look in two
directions to arrive at out forecast for Central Alabama. Off to the east
and SE, tropical moisture will be spreading westward thanks to Tropical
Storm Tammy. Then we look NW to watch the strongest cold front since last
spring. The timing of the front determines how much rain we get. We hope you
will check our day-by-day forecast for the specifics but , in a nutshell,
this is what we look for:

Some showers starting tomorrow. Could even hear thunder. Best chance
during the afternoon and night. The cold front arrives early Friday,
possibly before daybreak. Some showers will linger behind the front, mainly
Friday morning. Sunshine returns Saturday along with cooler temperatures and
much lower humidity. The weekend should feature extremely pleasant autumn
weather. We have lowered our coolest temperature for Sunday morning to 49
which will be our lowest temperature since last spring.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Tammy grew a bit stronger today as
she moved northward off the Florida east coast. She was located about 20
miles NE of Daytona moving NNW at 14 mph with sustained winds of 45 mph. The
center may move into Georgia before continuing her trip up the Atlantic
Seaboard. She is expected to dump a lot of rain all the way from
Jacksonville and Savannah to Portland, Maine.

FLY IN THE OINTMENT: The Extreme SE Gulf of Mexico is looking more
and more mysterious. It may be the first hint that still another tropical
cyclone is forming-the 20th of the season. It will be moving toward the NNE
and into friendlier territory the next couple of days. We will keep two or
three eyes focused that way.

BLIZZARD: Often when there is a change in seasons, the weather can
change in a dramatic way. So, a Blizzard Warning was in effect for part of
Northern Montana today. A foot of snow has fallen in the higher elevations
of the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah..the USA cold spot this morning
was Stanley, Idaho with 15. They have truly cornered the market with that
"honor" this year.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Nice to get a note from Matt Marshall,
a regular reader of our material in Layton, Utah. He reports a low of 34
where he lives in the hills north of Layton. He also says that their cats
often try to awaken them in the middle of the night like Little Miss Molly
did at me at 3:33 am yesterday...there was a wild awakening this morning.
Molly jumped up on my bed around 4:30, walked up and placed her front paws
on my chest. I supposed she was going to woof, woof me awake. Instead she
sneezed right in my face the loudest I have ever heard her and as loud as a
human. It scared the daylights (well nightlights) out of me. I thought
someone had broken in. I yelled loudly. That scared Molly so bad that she
zoomed off the bed and went to the living area to hide. I immediately got
up, got molly and cuddled and loved her to calm her down. She was shaking
from fright. An explosive way to ask to go to her great outdoor bathroom. No
more sleep after 4:30. We took a walk in the cool of the morning. Life goes
on.

...Weather Changes Are Ahead...

Temperatures will remain five to ten degrees above normal across Alabama
today, but a sharp cold front is racing southward through the plains, and
should pass through our state tomorrow night. In advance of the front,
clouds will begin to increase tonight, and we will mention the risk of
scattered showers and possibly a storm tomorrow and tomorrow night. Moisture
along the immediate front will be rather limited, and rainfall amounts
probably won't be all that heavy.

Much cooler air will move into the state on Friday with only a small risk of
a lingering shower early in the day. The weekend ahead looks very pleasant
with highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s, and no significant chance of rain.

TROPICS: A strong easterly wave will move closer to the Florida peninsula
today, bringing windy and wet weather to places like Daytona Beach,
Jacksonville, and Orlando. There is some chance a tropical storm could form
near the east-central Florida coast tonight or tomorrow, but if that happens
it should move northeast, keeping it out of the Gulf of Mexico. Then, the
system should move up the Atlantic coast bringing more windy and wet weather
to places like Baltimore and ultimately New York City and Boston. At this
point we don't expect the disturbance to impact this part of Alabama.

OCTOBER SNOW STORM: A strong winter storm will produce a large area of snow
today over parts of eastern Montana and much of North Dakota. Warrick,,
Montana measured 6 inches of snow yesterday.

OCTOBER HEAT: Hill City, KS yesterday soared to 93 degrees, tying the record
high for the date. Today's forecast high in Hill City is only 54 as cold
air takes over.

HELP IS ON THE WAY: From the unseasonably warm temperatures, that
is. The highs we are having are 5 to 7 degrees too warm for early October.
The "help" is in the form of a cold front that will move through very early
Friday. Until then, we will still have highs in the mid 80s. By Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, highs will only be in the mid 70s with lows at night in
the low to mid 50s. This means that some of the cooler North Alabama valley
locations may experience some upper 40s.

WHAT ABOUT RAIN: Moisture will be feeding up into Alabama from the
SE. It is somewhat unclear as to how much rain but we don't think it will be
very much. We should have some scattered showers by late Thursday lingering
into then morning hours Friday. Look for mostly sunny weather Saturday, with
a nice north breeze, lower humidity and highs in the 70s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Stan was demoted to a tropical storm
this morning after he moved inland into Mexico. He will still dump much
rain.
A large disturbed weather area near and east of the Bahamas remains
poorly organized. Winds upstairs are unfavorable now but that may change in
the next day or so. A reconnaissance flight scheduled for today was
cancelled but it may be rescheduled for tomorrow. As this discombobulated
system moves westward, heavy rains and gusty winds will spread across the NW
Bahamas this afternoon and tonight and across the Florida Peninsula
Wednesday.
This system may then get into the Gulf of Mexico. The solution after that is
not clear but it appears it will become elongated along the approaching cold
front approaching from the NW. This could dump much rain along the Atlantic
Seaboard. Indeed 6 to 7 inches a possibility near the East Florida Coast and
close to the Georgia-South Carolina-North Carolina coasts.

A BONA FIDE SNOWSTORM: The first one of the season for West and
North Montana, the mountains of North Utah, parts of North Dakota and the
high country of Colorado. Anywhere from 6 to 12 inches.other notes from
around the country...the low in Stanley, Idaho was 20...hottest yesterday,
102, Gila Bend, Arizona.

10 YEARS AGO OPAL: She made landfall late in the day on the NW
Florida Coast between Pensacola and Fort Walton. There was a peak gust of
144 mph at Mary Ester, near Fort Walton. A big storm surge brought extensive
damage to the coast. Opal continued inland passing near Montgomery around 10
pm and to near Anniston by midnight. Literally thousands of trees came down
in Alabama especially over the east half of the state. See a more complete
story about Opal on the 33/40 blog.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: At 3:33 this morning I heard a
"kerplunk" on my bed. It was Little Miss Molly. She walked up my body and
woofed in my face telling me I had to go for a walk. I looked her straight
in the eyes and said, "No, no Molly, time to go night-night again." She
curled up and went to sleep for two more hours...sure will be glad when she
gets her sleeping hours straight...we had a most pleasant half-mile
walk...she made me complete that even before the sun woke up but I don't
mind. I love her and life goes on.

...Another Warm October Day...

The normal high for today in Birmingham is 79 degrees; most communities will
be about 5 to 10 degrees above that level this afternoon as our October
"heat wave" continues. Tomorrow will be warm and dry as well, but we are
advertising some weather changes at the end of the week.

A cold front should pass through here Thursday night or early Friday with a
band of showers, and then a nice shot of cooler air will arrive just in time
for the weekend. We are projecting highs in the 70s, and lows in the 50s by
Saturday and Sunday. For now we will not mention any rain over the weekend,
but our eyes will be focused on the Gulf of Mexico for potential tropical
trouble.

TROPICS: Tropical storm Stan could become a hurricane today, and should move
into the Mexican coast well south of Brownsville, Texas late tonight or
early tomorrow.

A rather vigorous easterly wave moving through the Bahamas this morning is
moving toward the Florida peninsula, and will bring windy and wet weather to
much of central and south Florida through mid-week. There is a chance this
system becomes tropical storm Tammy in the eastern Gulf of Mexico later this
week, but upper air winds should carry the system northeast before having a
chance to impact this part of Alabama.

TEN YEARS AGO: Hurricane Opal made landfall near Pensacola Beach, Florida as
a marginal category three hurricane. The minimum central pressure at
landfall was 942 mb. Maximum sustained surface winds are currently estimated
at 100 knots in a narrow swath at the coast near the extreme eastern tip of
Choctawhatchee Bay about midway between Destin and Panama City. J.B. Elliott
will have much more on Opal on our afternoon discussion later today.

OCTOBER STARTING WARM: The chilly weather of Friday morning was a
flash-in-the-pan and now we are experiencing, once again, temperatures some
five degrees warmer than normal in the daytime and nights about 10 degrees
above normal.

However, we are in for more changes later in the week which will
include a decent chance of rain.

Much cooler air is already stockpiling near the Canadian border and
it will be spreading southward. For Alabama, the cold front will arrive
later in the day Thursday and will reach South Alabama Friday. Behind that
front will be the strongest high pressure system since last spring. This is
good news of you like cooler air.

By the weekend, temperatures across Central Alabama will range from
the pleasant mid 70s in daytime to the cool mid 50s at night.
Our first showers should appear Thursday and possibly late Wednesday
night. The better chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm should be
Thursday night with some showers lingering in the cooler air of Friday
morning.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Stan was over the Bay of Campeche
(which is also the SW Gulf of Mexico) He will probably become a hurricane
before moving inland into Mexico by early Wednesday. Meanwhile, all eyes are
on a large nervous weather area centered a few hundred miles east of the
Central Bahamas. The westward moving tropical wave should become better
organized and eventually a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely.
One of the weather models moves it into the Gulf of Mexico then toward the
NE to near the North Carolina Outer banks by late Friday. Another one sends
it west across the Central Gulf. Translation: Stay tuned.

SIGNS OF THE SEASON: Western Montana should get 2 to 5 inches of
snow tonight above 4,000 feet elevation (which means most of the area.) In
North Utah, the NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Wasatch and part
of the Uinta Mountains for 6 to 12 inches of snow above 7,000 feet by
Tuesday night. USA low this morning, 25 at Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD. Little Miss Molly all mixed up and it
is entirely my fault. I decided to take a 90-minute power nap Sunday
afternoon. I usually wake up automatically without an alarm. This time I did
not wake up until 10:30 pm! I had slept through a Sunday School teachers
class at 5 pm, church at 6 pm and an after-church get-together with friends.
Little Miss Molly must have been ringing the bell and I did not hear her.
When I awoke she was lying in the door of the master bedroom as flat as a
pancake. That is one of her tricks when she gets impatient waiting to take a
walk. So, the rest of the evening included a 10:30 pm walk with Molly
followed by a big ball game and pull-rope, plus some loving and cuddling.
Then I went in my office and worked a bit and Molly took a brief nap. I did
not eat until midnight so Molly was ready for another walk at 1 am. She has
been sleeping much of the day to get back on track. I guess I was guilty of
puppy abuse. She still misses my wife being away and each time we come in
from a walk, she searches the entire house. But life goes on.

...Another Nice October Day...

GOOD MORNING: It was a nice day for yard work yesterday. Lots of yard
work. After being on the road for most of the last thirteen weeks, I was
behind on projects. The digging out process will continue today, with more
nice weather in store.

ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: High pressure over New England continues to give us
an easterly wind flow, keeping moisture levels high. With no triggers to
spark convective development, we should be dry again today. Low stratus
clouds this morning will erode by late morning, giving way to a warm October
sun. Dry conditions will prevail into Wednesday, although clouds will be on
the increase by then thanks to a system in the Gulf. A front will approach
on Thursday, increasing our shower and storm chances. The front will stall
over South Alabama, meaning Friday will be still cloudy and showery. The
weekend looks promising, though.

TROPICS: Stan is back over the water this morning. The storm weakened to a
depression while over the Yucatan last evening, but it will strengthen
steadily, becoming a hurricane again before making landfall on the Mexican
coast late on Tuesday. We will be monitoring a disturbed area of weather
associated with a trough of low pressure east of the Bahamas. Both major
forecasting models bring the system into the Gulf by Tuesday. The GFS model
depicts a very unsettled situation across the Gulf and western Caribbean for
the next several days. In fact, the GFS develops a low over the southern
Gulf by the weekend and lifts it northeast across Florida and into the
Atlantic. Could see Tammy this week.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Hurricane Lili made landfall on the Louisiana coast
near New Iberia. The day before, Lili had intensified rapidly from a
Category Two to a Category Four hurricane as winds rose to 145 mph. At
early evening, the storm seemed to take an ominous northward turn toward New
Orleans, which was not evacuated. The storm weakened steadily during the
night, and max winds fell to 90 mph at landfall. Lili moved ashore about 8
a.m. on west coast of Vermillion Bay, just to the southwest of New Iberia.

GOOD AFTERNOON: October Baseball. It is the best. A Phillies win today
coupled with an Astros loss will force a one game playoff tomorrow. If
Cleveland wins and the Yankees beat the Red Sox today, there will also be a
one game playoff Monday night in Fenway. The Division Series games start on
Tuesday. The Braves will have to wait to see who they are going to play.
The Padres or the Astros. I've got my tickets. Do you? Go Braves!

OUR FORECAST: The airmass over Alabama is unstable enough to produce some
isolated convection this afternoon, but chances look very slim. Skies will
be partly cloudy overnight, with another deck of low stratus forming by
morning, especially over eastern sections. Those clouds will erode by late
morning, allowing for increasing sunshine. Monday and Tuesday look dry,
with partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures continuing.

Wednesday looks a lot like the first two days of the week, but we could see
an increase in showers due to a system moving across the Central Gulf of
Mexico. Check the next section for more details. And then, a cold front
will approach the area from the northwest on Thursday. It should bring
showers and thunderstorms to the area late on Thursday into much of Friday.
Cooler and less humid conditions should arrive for the weekend, but skies
will remain partly cloudy.

IN THE TROPICS: The NHC said goodbye to Tropical Depression 19 on the 10
a.m. advisory. Tropical Depression 20 became Tropical Storm Stan before
making landfall on the eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula this morning.
Stan should weaken temporarily to a depression, but will quickly intensify
after it emerges over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico during the early
morning hours tomorrow. With warm waters, low wind shear and high pressure
aloft, Stan will become a hurricane before making its second landfall on the
Mexican coast about 325 miles south of Brownsville, Texas Wednesday morning.
First notice of an area of disturbed weather 500 miles east of the Bahamas.
Yesterday, the GFS developed this into a major hurricane that would move
through the Bahamas and menace the East Coast of Florida before curving
northward to strike the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The morning runs of
both the NAM and the GFS bring a system into the southeastern Gulf Tuesday.
The NAM is stronger as it crosses southern Florida, but both show a westward
moving tropical storm by Wednesday in the Gulf. Since the GFS goes out
further in time, we rely on it to predict that the storm or hurricane will
meander over into the southwestern Gulf. Stay tuned.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Hurricane Flora moved across the south coast of
Haiti and then meandered across eastern Cuba for the next five days, lashing
the island with winds of one hundred mph or more for one hundred hours or
more. Rainfall amounts were astronomical, with as much as ninety inches
being reported near Velasco. More rain was reported at Guantanamo Bay from
Flora than was reported during the entire year of 1962. Flora is the
second deadliest hurricane ever in the Atlantic, with over 7,000 deaths.
