PINCH HITTER: J.B. Elliott is taking the day off; the daily Miss Molly
adventure will return tomorrow.

COMPLEX FORECAST: J.B. picked a good day to be away from the forecast
office. Lots of issues to deal with, and several possible pitfalls in the
forecast for the next 38 hours. But, the end result is a big change to
cooler weather for all of Alabama; the coolest temperatures we have seen
since spring.
We are forecasting a high of only 69 degrees tomorrow; if that verifies that
will be our coolest maximum temperature since May 30.

TROPICAL MISCHIEF: We have two tropical systems that will keep the sky
cloudy and our weather wet at times through tomorrow. The broad circulation
of tropical depression Tammy is over southeast Alabama, and will continue to
bring some light rain at times this afternoon.
We will forecast a good chance of rain tonight thanks to a strong cold front
moving through, teaming up with moisture from another tropical disturbance
moving through the eastern Gulf of Mexico. At the moment that new system is
not especially organized, but it is not out of the question that a tropical
storm develops. One way or another, this new mass of moisture will move up
through north Florida, and then up the Atlantic coast over the weekend.

A COOL CHANGE: We should stay in the 60s all day tomorrow with a cloudy sky
and the continuing chance of light rain. The most widespread rain tomorrow
should be over the eastern half of the state, with rain more spotty over the
western counties. There is a chance some of the rain could linger into
tomorrow evening, setting up the possibility of a little rain at some of the
high school football games, especially east of I-65.

THE WEEKEND: A trailing upper air disturbance over Mississippi could very
well keep clouds in place during the day Saturday, but at this time we don't
expect any rain. Sunshine returns on Sunday, and temperatures will remain
very pleasant. Looks like we are headed for the low 50s early Sunday, and if
the sky does indeed clear then some of the colder spots over north Alabama
should dip into the upper 40s.

NEXT WEEK: At this time we are expecting rain-free weather for most of
Alabama next week, with temperatures near normal for mid-October.

BIG TIME COLD/SNOW: The mercury dropped to 8 degrees this morning at Baker,
Montana, where there is a thick blanket of snow on the ground. Williston,
North Dakota reported 14 degrees, a new record low for the date. Parts of
North Dakota have up to two feet of snow on the ground, and the NWS in
Bismarck reports this is their earliest major snowstorm on record. Parts of
Interstate 94 remain closed through Montana and North Dakota. Ten National
Guard soldiers with heavy equipment were out rescuing stranded people. In
Minot, a shelter also was set up at an old armory. The Minot Air Force Base
required only essential personnel to report for duty.
