...Another Warm October Day...

The normal high for today in Birmingham is 79 degrees; most communities will
be about 5 to 10 degrees above that level this afternoon as our October
"heat wave" continues. Tomorrow will be warm and dry as well, but we are
advertising some weather changes at the end of the week.

A cold front should pass through here Thursday night or early Friday with a
band of showers, and then a nice shot of cooler air will arrive just in time
for the weekend. We are projecting highs in the 70s, and lows in the 50s by
Saturday and Sunday. For now we will not mention any rain over the weekend,
but our eyes will be focused on the Gulf of Mexico for potential tropical
trouble.

TROPICS: Tropical storm Stan could become a hurricane today, and should move
into the Mexican coast well south of Brownsville, Texas late tonight or
early tomorrow.

A rather vigorous easterly wave moving through the Bahamas this morning is
moving toward the Florida peninsula, and will bring windy and wet weather to
much of central and south Florida through mid-week. There is a chance this
system becomes tropical storm Tammy in the eastern Gulf of Mexico later this
week, but upper air winds should carry the system northeast before having a
chance to impact this part of Alabama.

TEN YEARS AGO: Hurricane Opal made landfall near Pensacola Beach, Florida as
a marginal category three hurricane. The minimum central pressure at
landfall was 942 mb. Maximum sustained surface winds are currently estimated
at 100 knots in a narrow swath at the coast near the extreme eastern tip of
Choctawhatchee Bay about midway between Destin and Panama City. J.B. Elliott
will have much more on Opal on our afternoon discussion later today.
