...A Major Transition...

MILLION DOLLAR WEATHER AHEAD: We sure cannot put a dollar amount on
our weather, but undoubtedly our week ahead will feel like a million
dollars. For the hundreds and hundreds of people with flood damage in
Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, the chance to clean up and drain down
will be worth an untold dollar amount.

It seems like we took on a deep blanket of tropical air months ago. Of
course, it was not. It was more like two weeks ago. I told someone
yesterday that I would not doubt it if our ultra-soaked ground might
be seeping through and creating some wet-weather springs in China.

BIG RAIN AMOUNTS TODAY: It has been pouring rain over many square
miles of Alabama today, especially over the north half of the state. A
Flash Flood Watch was posted for about the north half of Alabama and
part of SE Alabama until later tonight. There have been several Flash
Flood Warnings and many communities have received well over 2 inches
of rain. We got one report of 5 inches of rain at Dora in Walker
County. Some roads were also closed in Walker County due to high water.

THE BIG TURN AROUND: This will be the most pleasant change in weather
we have had in months, because it is going to put a complete end to
constant flood problems and heavy rain and also bring us lots of
sunshine, much lower humidity and a real touch of autumn.
That better weather will start tomorrow as a cool front moves through
the state. Actually, we are going to have two cool fronts with the
second one coming through Monday. So, what can we promise? After the
rainstorms move out late today and tonight, we will be sporting dry
weather from Sunday through most of next week.

A big bonus is the much lower humidity and the noticeably cooler
nights. Highs will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. By Tuesday
morning we are projecting a low of 52 and 50 on Wednesday. Some of our
guidance, which we have to use very carefully, has suggested a low of
49 Tuesday and Wednesday. It is almost certain that some of the cooler
North Alabama valleys will drop into the 40s. The dew points will be
in the 40s much of Tuesday and Wednesday and that will help dry out
the topsoil.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Covering for Bill Murray today while he and his
family attend the Alabama/Arkansas game in Tuscaloosa. One of his sons
is a cheerleader. Looks like Tuscaloosa is going to get a break in the
rain by kick off time. Not so lucky down in East Alabama where Auburn
hosts Ball State tonight. Should be a good chance of some showers or
thunderstorms sometime during the game.

NOTES: More signs of autumn. It was 25 this morning in Saranac Lake,
New York and Houlton, Maine and a cold 14 at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska.
Hottest yesterday 110 in Death Valley. Tropical Depression #8 was way
far away in the Atlantic this afternoon with sustained winds of 35
mph. By Wednesday, it is expected to curve even more to the NE—even
more distant from the good old USA.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I saw a TV program this morning about
dogs being trained for military use and that their sense of smell is
more than 10 times greater than humans. They should test Little Miss
Molly. I believe she can beat humans 25 times over. On our walk this
morning, passing a garbage can of a neighbor, Molly was 30 feet
beyond, turned her head sniffing and ran back and thoroughly examined
the garbage can as high as she could reach. I went over and sniffed
and could not detect anything. Molly has been in seclusion most of the
day after one peal of thunder. Life goes on.

...Wet Saturday...

SHOWERS AND STORMS: Drier air is on the way, but first, we will deal
with a rain and storms across Alabama today. An approaching cold
front impinging on our warm and moist airmass will produce showers and
storms today. Look for a line of storms to push through the state at
some point today. Rainfall could be heavy, presenting the threat of
local flash flooding in some areas. Some of the storms could be
strong as well, with wind damage being the primary threat.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama will host Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. at Bryant-
Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. A few showers and storms are likely
during the game with a kickoff temperature near 80 degrees. Fans
should note that some of the large grassy parking areas will be
unavailable because of all the recent heavy rains. Take this into
consideration if you are planning to head to the game. This evening
Auburn will host Ball State at Jordan-Hare Stadium at 6:00 p.m. Rain
is likely at times during the game with a kickoff temperature in the
mid to upper 70s. And, UAB is at Texas A&M tonight for a 6:00 p.m.
kickoff; the weather at College Station will be mostly cloudy with
only a tiny risk of a shower during the game. The temperature should
be in the low 80s at kickoff.

DRIER WEATHER AHEAD: Sunday will feature clearing skies across North
Central Alabama. It will still be warm, with highs in the 80s and a
fresh westerly wind. Humidities will not drop very much until Monday,
when the main cold front will arrive. This will finally lead to some
fall-like conditions by Tuesday that will remain in place through
Thursday. By Friday, another approaching front will bring back a
chance of showers and storms that will be with us through Saturday.

TROPICS: Tropical depression number 8 formed in the eastern Atlantic
Friday afternoon. By the time you read this, it may have become a
tropical storm. If so, you will be reading about Grace. The system
will move over cooler water over the next couple of days and it will
begin to encounter some serious shear. The system will likely be torn
to shreds by Monday. Needless to say, TD8/Grace will probably be
short lived.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains is the podcast that's all about
weather. This week the panel will talk with tornado and lightning
researcher Tim Samaras. Also, dog trainer Yolanta Benal will make a
quick appearance to help us understand how to make our dogs more
comfortable when storms are nearby. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com
or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1950: A Blue Moon occurs when a full moon occurs
twice in the same calendar month. It doesn't look any different from
any other full moon, it is just called a Blue Moon. But on this date,
major forest fires in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada spread a
large smoke pall over Canada, the Eastern United States and Western
Europe, causing the moon to actually appear blue. The pall was so
thick that the sun was visible to the naked eye without discomfort
through a lavender colored sky. Follow my weather history tweets on

...Record September Rainfall?...

GREAT WEATHER NEXT WEEK: Old Mother Nature has treated us like a pop
whip taking us from rain and thunderstorms to a brief respite with dry
weather then back to more thunderstorms. But we do have what I
consider some great news down the road.

We have had at least two days generally rain free. That was crucial to
have, because it permitted swollen streams all around the state to
drain down somewhat. The Tombigbee River was still slightly above
flood stage in the Demopolis area this morning, but it was thawing.

Only a few showers were in progress around Alabama early this
afternoon, but a line of thunderstorms over Mississippi was
approaching the NW corner of Alabama. NWS/Memphis posted several Flash
Flood Warnings for some NE Mississippi and SW Tennessee counties. A
Flash Flood Watch was in effect for much of Middle Tennessee and the
NWS/Huntsville posted a Flash Flood Watch for the Tennessee Valley
counties in Alabama.

While there will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms at times
tonight, we believe the main batch of showers and thunderstorms will
occur Saturday as a cool front gets closer to the state. They should
diminish Saturday evening, but rain could be heavy at times Saturday.

GREAT WEATHER AHEAD: Clouds should move out during the day Sunday as
the humidity drops and we should have mostly sunshine Monday and
Tuesday and possibly Wednesday. The humidity will be noticeably lower
with high temperatures ranging from 78 to 82 and night-time lows as
cool as the mid 50s by Tuesday morning. After the Saturday storms, we
see little or no rain for most of next week. That will give us about 5
days to get rid of some of the high water.

MOUNDVILLE: Several West Alabama counties got some of the worst of
the recent flooding including places like Bibb, Hale and Greene
Counties. The Moundville Times reported that there was flood damage to
one of the Indian mounds at the Moundville Archaeological Park. Those
mounds have been there for ages and I remember nearly freezing to
death when I was a kid in an Easter pageant at sunrise on Easter
morning. The Moundville Times office was also flooded when water came
in from the parking lot.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: There is about a 1 in 4 chance that a shower or
thunderstorm will occur for high school games tonight with the better
chance at some of the North and West Alabama stadiums. Alabama will
host Arkansas for a 2:30 kick off. There is a good chance of showers
and thunderstorms at some point during the game. It should be near 80
at kick off. Auburn hosts Ball State for a 6:00 p.m. kick off. Some
rain is likely with near 78 at kick off. UAB travels out to East Texas
to play Texas A&M for a 6:00 p.m. kick off. They should have dry
weather and near 80 degrees.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is logging a lot of
sleeping hours. She may be storing up sleep because she heard me say
there would be thunderstorms tomorrow. We rearranged our living area
to where she can have the entire back of the couch as a lookout point.
She sure did thank us. Now it is impossible for anybody or any dog to
go along the walking track without getting a vigorous protest from
Molly for invading her territory. Life goes on.

...Wet Tomorrow; Dry Next Week...

SCATTERED SHOWERS TODAY: A warm, moist airmass remains over Alabama
today, and with the daytime heating we expect to see scattered showers
and thunderstorms on radar by the afternoon hours. Temperatures will
reach the mid 80s, and the chance of any one spot getting wet this
afternoon or tonight is about one in three.

Look for an increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms
tomorrow thanks to an upper trough passing just north of Alabama. The
rain won't last all day, and there could be a few peeks of sunshine,
but on the other hand a few strong storms will be possible along with
heavy downpours. Some localized flooding problems are possible due to
the saturated nature of the soil. Then, drier air finally moves into
the state on Sunday with a partly sunny sky. The air won't be cooler
initially, in fact Sunday will be quite warm with a high in the mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: A secondary cold front will pass through in dry fashion
Monday, and that will finally bring noticeably cooler air on Tuesday.
We expect lows down in the 50s early Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
morning. Some of the colder spots around here might even reach the
upper 40s by daybreak Wednesday. Humidity levels will be low, and we
will have a welcomed chance to dry out. Looks like the next chance of
rain will come at the end of the week on Friday, or the following
Saturday with an approaching cold front.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The chance of any one high school football stadium
getting wet tonight is about one in four, with the best chance coming
over the western half of the state. We recommend taking rain gear just
in case a shower or storm pops up. Temperatures will be in the upper
70s at kickoff. Tomorrow, Alabama will host Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. at
Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. A few showers and storms are
likely during the game with a kickoff temperature near 80 degrees.
Then, tomorrow evening Auburn will host Ball State at Jordan-Hare
Stadium at 6:00 p.m. Rain is likely at times during the game with a
kickoff temperature in the mid to upper 70s. And, UAB is at Texas A&M
tomorrow night for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff; the weather at College Station
will be mostly cloudy with only a
tiny risk of a shower during the game. The temperature should be in
the low 80s at kickoff.

TROPICS: A tropical wave is in the far eastern Atlantic, just
southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. It is some potential for slow
development in coming days, but most likely this one will turn north
into the open Atlantic without threatening any land area. The rest of
the Atlantic basin remains very quiet. The hurricane season will end
at the end of November.

DID YOU KNOW? September is a month with a wide range of temperatures.
The hottest temperature on record during the month in Birmingham is
106, measured on September 5 and 6, 1925. Coldest during the month is
37, which was seen on September 30, 1967.

...Record September Rainfall?...

In September 1906, Birmingham recorded 13.19 inches of rain. So far,
9.76 inches of rain has fallen at the Birmingham Airport in September
2009. That is enough to move us into sixth place in the pantheon of
September monthly totals.

HOW MUCH MORE RAIN? We could easily see another two inches of rain
between now and Sunday or Monday across Central Alabama. If that
happens, September 2009 could move into second place, just ahead of
2004, when Hurricane Ivan caused Birmingham's record single day
rainfall. Showers and storms have been limited today over eastern
sections of the area, thanks to an easterly flow of more stable air.
Over western Alabama, there are better chances for showers and storms,
especially close to the Mississippi border since that region will be
closer to the upper low to the west.

TURN TO STORMY AGAIN: The pesky upper low will finally weaken and
start moving east over the next couple of days. We will see an uptick
in thunderstorms across the area on Friday and the stage is being set
for a stormy day on Saturday with the chance for some severe weather.
There are some factors that may limit the severity, but with a little
instability, strong to severe storms will be likely Saturday afternoon
and evening. Not good for football games across the state…

FOOTBALL FORECAST: The chance of any one high school football stadium
getting wet tonight and tomorrow night is about one in three, with the
best chance coming over the western half of the state. We recommend
taking rain gear just in case. Temperatures will be in the upper 70s
at kickoff. Saturday, Alabama will host Arkansas at 2:30 p.m.
Tuscaloosa. Showers and storms are likely during the game with a
kickoff temperature near 80 degrees. Then, Saturday evening Auburn
will host Ball State at Jordan-Hare Stadium at 6:00 p.m. Rain is
likely at times during the game with a kickoff temperature in the mid
to upper 70s. And, UAB is at Texas A&M Saturday night for a 6:00 p.m.
kickoff; the weather at College Station will be mostly cloudy with
only a slight risk of a shower during the game. The temperature should
be in the low 80s at kickoff.

NEXT WEEK: Frontal system pushes through late Saturday, but there
could be a few showers/storms n Sunday, especially south of
Birmingham, until the front gets clear of the area. We will keep a
slight chance of a shower/storm in the forecast for Monday before
drier air moves in for real Monday night. The rest of the week looks
beautiful.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Hurricane Rita made landfall around 2:30 a.m.
CDT just east of the Louisiana/Texas border between Sabine Pass and
Johnson's Bayou as a Category Two storm with top winds of 120 mph. A
shadow of its former Cat 5 self, the Category Three storm still
brought a devastating storm surge to the coast of Southwest Louisiana
and Southeast Texas. Houston dodged a bullet, as over 2.5 million
residents evacuated in advance of the hurricane. The hurricane killed
6 people and did $9.4 billion in damage.

...Summer-Like Weather Continues...

LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEEK: We finally have a break in this muggy,
wet pattern next week, but before we get there will have more rain to
deal with at times. Today will be similar to yesterday; the best
chance of showers and storms will be over the western side of the
state, but we can't rule out a few scattered showers over East Alabama
as well. There will be intervals of sunshine, and temperatures will
rise into the mid 80s this afternoon. Pretty much the same story
tomorrow; mixed sun and clouds with a risk of scattered showers and
thunderstorms, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours.

STORMY SATURDAY: The upper low that has been parked over the nation's
heartland for the past few days will open up into a trough and pass
just north of Alabama, and this should bring a marked increase in the
number of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday. While it won't rain
all day, a few strong storms are very possible with heavy rain, and
some localized flood problems could develop. The chance of showers and
storms will extend into Saturday night. Then, on Sunday, drier air
begins to move into North Alabama. We will hang on to some risk of a
stray shower, mainly Sunday morning, but the sky should become partly
sunny.

Another front will pass through on Monday, perhaps kicking off a
shower or two in scattered spots, followed by a nice surge of cooler
and drier air that should mean rain-free weather for Alabama Tuesday
through Friday of next week. Highs will drop into the 70s on Tuesday,
with lows down in the 50s by early Wednesday and Thursday morning.
Some of the normally cooler valleys across North Alabama could even
reach the upper 40s. This will be a very refreshing change for a
waterlogged state.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The chance of any one high school football stadium
getting wet tonight and tomorrow night is about one in three, with the
best chance coming over the western half of the state. We recommend
taking rain gear just in case. Temperatures will be in the upper 70s
at kickoff. Saturday, Alabama will host Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. at
Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Showers and storms are likely
during the game with a kickoff temperature near 80 degrees. Then,
Saturday evening Auburn will host Ball State at Jordan-Hare Stadium at
6:00 p.m. Rain is likely at times during the game with a kickoff
temperature in the mid to upper 70s. And, UAB is at Texas A&M Saturday
night for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff; the weather at College Station will be
mostly cloudy with only a slight risk of a shower during the game. The
temperature should be in the low 80s at kickoff.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: While the Birmingham metro escaped the rain much of
the day, tropical downpours prompted flash flood warnings for a number
of counties in the Tennessee Valley yesterday morning, and Lamar
County in Northwest Alabama was placed under a flash flood warning for
a while last night.

...We Dry Out A Bit...

Our beloved J.B. Elliott is having some oral surgery done today, so I
get the privilege of sitting in for him. So no Miss Molly story
today, although I guess I could tell some great stories about our 13
year cat named Fluffy. Has to be the best cat ever. I wonder if she
and Miss Molly would get along…

HIGH PRESSURE HELPS OUT A BIT: The Bermuda High is flexing its
muscles today and ridging over into eastern Alabama. This will allow
for fewer showers and storms over the eastern half of the state.
Storms have been more numerous over western sections, especially the
Northwest corner of the state where a flash flood warning was in
effect for Lawrence County at early afternoon. This pattern should
remain in place on Thursday for the most part. If you find yourself
under one of these tropical downpours, rainfall will still have the
potential to be heavy, but we don't anticipate the kind of flooding
problems we have seen over the past few days.

FRONT BY THE WEEKEND: Things will start to move by the weekend as
the big upper low to the west opens into a trough and lifts out. This
will push a front our way. Rain chances will be a little better on
Friday, and it looks like we will deal with a good chance of showers
and storms Saturday or Saturday night, into Sunday morning. The exact
timing is still up in the air, but suffice to say there may be some
showers around for the football games Saturday at Tuscaloosa and
Auburn. UAB is away this week. There may be a few lingering showers
early Sunday, but we finally will realize a little of the promise of
fall by Monday and next week.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic continues quiet. The GFS has been
trying to spin up a tropical
cyclone near the Antilles around the first week of October, sending it
toward the Bahamas before curving it northward.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 191: Robert Henson, author of the Rough Guide
to Climate Change appeared as the Guest WeatherBrain on Monday night
and answered questions and gave his opinion about the controversial
issue. James and Tim gave him a hard time and it was a spirited
debate. Download the show at www.weatherbrains.com or subscribe on
iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains and you could win a copy
of the book next Monday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Four named tropical cyclones were going on in
the Atlantic basin simultaneously, one of only five times that has
happened since the modern satellite era of tracking storms began in
1960. Hurricane Karl was about 1,000 miles southwest of the Azores,
moving over the open waters of the North Atlantic. Hurricane Jeanne
was approaching the Bahamas, on her way to a rendezvous with the East
Coast of Florida. Tropical Storm Lisa was about 1,000 miles west of
the Cape Verde Islands. Tropical Storm Ivan had regenerated after the
most unlikely of courses that carried the storm through the Caribbean,
to the Alabama/Florida coast, across the Appalachians and back over
the Atlantic southeast of North Carolina. From there it looped back
across Florida and re-intensified over the Gulf of Mexico. As amazed
forecasters and bewildered coastal residents tracked this "Son of
Ivan" tropical storm, it headed toward the Texas/Louisiana border.

...Humid With Scattered Storms...

FALL OR SUMMER? The autumnal equinox was yesterday at 4:18 p.m. local
time, but our weather will feel more like summer for the rest of this
week with very warm and humid conditions continuing. While there will
be occasional intervals of sunshine, we will also maintain the risk of
scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. The best chance of
showers will come during the afternoon and evening hours, and we
believe the most numerous showers and storms will be over the western
half of the state. While a few heavy downpours are possible,
additional widespread flooding problems are not expected through
Friday. Afternoon temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80s, about
five
degrees above average for mid to late September in Alabama.

WEEKEND FORECAST: A deep upper trough that has been over the nation's
mid-section will open up as a trough, and pass just north of Alabama
on Saturday. This should bring a marked increase in the coverage of
showers and storms as we begin the weekend. We will be on the lookout
for flash flooding problems, and the Storm Prediction Center has
outlooked roughly the northern half of Alabama for the potential for
severe thunderstorms during the day Saturday. Yet another Saturday
when you will need rain gear for the college football games in our
state. But, by Sunday, drier air will creep into the northern half of
the state, and we will mention just the chance of a lingering shower
Sunday, mainly during the morning hours.

A CHANCE TO DRY OUT: A secondary front will pass through Alabama
Monday, which might kick off a shower or two, but following that front
the weather looks excellent for the rest of the week. The middle of
next week will feature sunny days, clear nights, cool mornings, and
low humidity. Just what the doctor ordered for a waterlogged state.

HOW WET? It has rained in Birmingham on 16 of the first 22 days of
September, and we had measurable rain for 9 consecutive days,
September 13-22. The rain total for the month is 9.50″. We do need a
break.

SEPTEMBER SNOW: Additional 12 inches of snow expected in parts of the
Rockies last night. Already, Conifer, Colo., had 11 inches on the
ground last night. At least 3 inches of the white stuff fell in parts
of the foothills west of Denver. Freezing temperatures were expected
this morning as far south as Flagstaff, Arizona.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...More Showers And Storms...

OVERDOSED WITH RAIN: No way to escape the fact that the flash flood
damage in Alabama is going to amount to a huge chunk of change—well
into the a millions of dollars. This includes widespread flooding of
lowlands, crops, pastures and homes. A number of roads were completely
washed out and bridges will have to be built. We can only hope that
the recovery can get well underway without too much of additional rain
aggravating the problem.

However, we cannot guarantee that. This afternoon showers and
thunderstorms were increasing to the west of Alabama and moving
eastward. They had become numerous over Louisiana and South
Mississippi. Those were all moving toward the NE. Others will be
developing.
These showers and storms may not be quite as numerous as on previous
days, but they will be potent enough to dump some very heavy rain. The
storms yesterday dumped some very heavy amounts in parts of the state.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: We believe that by Thursday and Friday there
will be a drop off in the number of showers and thunderstorms. By
Saturday, however, a weak front will be asking to move into NW Alabama
with a low-pressure area along the front over South Louisiana. This
will increase the number of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama
for the second Saturday in a row. By early next week, especially by
Monday and Tuesday, slightly cooler and drier air will greatly reduce
the number of showers and storms and we will have low temperatures in
the mid 60s and maybe as low as the upper 50s by the middle of next
week. Highs will back off to the low and mid 80s.

ATLANTA: The Atlanta tragic flash flood story has been well covered
by the TV news channels and other news outlets. A neighbor has a
friend in Atlanta and he advised that in one place the flood waters
submerged a school all the way up to the roof and it will be a total
loss. Tragically there were several drownings in the Atlanta flood.
There was also one in NE Alabama. In Etowah County, a man drowned
after he slid into a pond off a muddy bank. The bank collapsed under
his feet and he fell in. Divers found him about 2 hours later.

RIGHT ON TIME: On the first day of autumn, a snow situation in
Colorado and a new winter storm will affect other parts of the Rockies
tonight and tomorrow producing as much as 12 inches of snow in the
North Colorado mountains. Yesterday 11 inches accumulated at Conifer
and 9 inches SW of Evergreen, Colorado. Low temperatures this morning
included 20 at Big Piney, Wyoming, 21 at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska and 23
at Leadville, Colorado.

RAIN SCORECARD: Birmingham has received 51. 16 inches of rain so far
this year with an impressive surplus of 10.67 inches. Other parts of
the state are okay, but not as well off. In Anniston, the excess for
the year is 4.93 and Tuscaloosa 2.61.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our house is as quiet as a mouse. Only
two of us live here now. Well, it should be three because Little Miss
Molly is as close to being a human as a little dog could be. She has
been storing up excess sleep that she lost during the big thunder-
boomers and the excitement of so many people being here. Last night
she slept all night in our big king-size bed. When I got up at 5:00,
she immediately transferred and seized my recliner and she has been
there for 7 hours. Life goes on.

...Flood Threat Continues Today...

TOO MUCH RAIN: Birmingham's official rain total for the month of
September is now 9.47", pushing the rain total for the year to 51.13",
giving us a 10.64" surplus for 2009. It is likely we will add to that
surplus today as scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will
likely develop statewide. Like recent days, a few heavy downpours are
likely, and additional flash flooding problems are certainly possible.
The ground is completely saturated, and the water simply has no place
to go. Additional rain totals of one-half to one inch are likely
today, with isolated heavier amounts.

WHY ALL THE RAIN: A tropical low moved inland from the western Gulf of
Mexico about ten days ago, then stalling out in the Ark-La-Tex region
west of Alabama. It was not a tropical storm, or even a tropical
depression, so it never got a name. But, the impact was very similar
to a stalled hurricane or tropical storm, much like Tropical Storm
Alberto in 1994, which produced a flash flood disaster over Southeast
Alabama and South Georgia. Alabama has been on the wet side (east
side) of this system, and there has been very little change in the
daily synoptic pattern resulting in some big time, historic rain
amounts for the Deep South.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: We do expect a general decrease in the number
of showers and storms over the latter half of the week. The weather
won't be dry, but we believe the showers and storms will be more
widely spaced as an upper air ridge builds in. This will also mean
very warm afternoons, with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 80s.
The best chance of showers and and storms on these three days will
come during the afternoon and evening hours, or during the peak of the
daytime heating process.

THE WEEKEND: A strong upper trough will pass just north of Alabama on
Saturday, suppressing the upper ridge, and giving us yet another
increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms as we begin the
weekend. Then, drier air will creep into the state Sunday, with the
most numerous showers and storms shifting down into South Alabama.
Then, it looks like most of Alabama will be actually dry for the first
two days of next week. We sure need a chance to dry out.

WILD WEATHER DAY: In addition to major flash flooding yesterday,
tornado warnings were required for some West-Central Alabama counties
for storms in the general area from Livingston to Demopolis. No damage
was reported, however. Some of the most serious flooding during the
day was seen across Greene, Hale, and Bibb counties where a number of
roads were flooded. In some cases, roads were actually washed away in
rural areas.

AUTUMNAL EQUINOX: The fall season officially arrives this afternoon at
4:18 when the sun is directly over the equator; today will feature
roughly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

===================================================================

...Who Would Have Thought It...

NOT A DRY SQUARE FOOT IN ALABAMA: Yes, we knew that any time a low-
pressure system forms in the Gulf of Mexico and moves inland, that it
is a decent rain producer. That low which formed about 10 days ago was
not tropical in nature, but it might as well have been. There were
several other factors, too complicated to describe now, but the low
moved northward at times about the speed of a turtle. Much of the
time, Alabama was on the east side of that low-pressure circulation,
which means we got persistent and deep moist air from the Gulf to
blanket the entire state.

The rest is not yet history. While the torrential rain reached its
peak starting late Thursday, we will still have a good chance of some
more showers and thunderstorms tonight and Tuesday. The recovery
process will begin on Wednesday. We will still have scattered showers
and thunderstorms all the way through Sunday, but just not as
numerous. Long-range guidance shows a decent high-pressure system
settling over the Central Plains by next Monday, possibly pushing some
drier and slightly cooler air into Alabama next Monday and Tuesday.

The thunderstorms last night were memorable because of some of the
worst lightning we have seen in many moons and rolling thunder that
lasted so long that windowpanes would vibrate for several minutes.
Undoubtedly, thousands of dogs were scared out of their wits and spent
a restless night with no sleep.

FLASH FLOOD WATCHES AND WARNINGS: A great part of Alabama continues
under a Flash Flood Watch this afternoon and tonight. Flash Flood
Warnings were numerous over the central and west/central counties this
afternoon. They were highly appropriate. At one point today, the
National Weather Service in Birmingham issued something that I do not
ever remember before. Around 10:00 a.m., the NWS issued a Special
Weather Statement about Life Threatening Flash Flooding across Central
Alabama. It was a very timely and appropriate statement. There are so
many flash flood events overnight and today that it is impossible to
report them all. A typical one was from my home area at Moundville in
Hale County where the EMA reported extensive flooding with numerous
roads closed and water damage to several homes. Some roads were washed
out in West Alabama also.

RAIN AMOUNTS: It is difficult to get a handle on final rain totals
this early, but it is near certain that part of West/Central Alabama
got over 10 inches during the night and this morning. I do not believe
there is a single square mile of dry soil in Alabama. I doubt if you
could stir up any dust driving down a dirt country road at 60 mph.

There was so much rain in Alabama recently that even some of the major
rivers will go above flood stage, including the Tombigbee.

ATLANTA: At least 2 fatalities from flash flooding in West Georgia in
the general vicinity of Atlanta. Late last night while we were getting
flooded, a separate family of thunderstorms moved slowly across the
Atlanta area and caused great problems.

TROPICAL: The entire Atlantic Basin was quiet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little pal, Miss Molly, is totally
exhausted today. She went into total seclusion Sunday afternoon and
did not reappear until this morning. She has about 5 safe spots and
she spent the entire night behind my easy chair by our bookshelves. We
took her to bed, but she refused to stay. So now she is sleeping all
day today and I hope she can get a full night of sleep. It only takes
a faint distant peal of thunder to send her into action. But life goes
on despite the mean old storms.

...Turning Off The Faucet?...

I am beginning to feel like the Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. I will
never complain loudly about rainfall, not after what we went through
in the drought of 2007. It is nice that everything is green and
verdant. But the days and days of rain have become repetitive.
Hopefully, we see some relief coming by the middle and end of the week.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: We continue to see a southwesterly flow across
Alabama and the Deep South this morning. Disturbances in the flow will
trigger more heavy rain and storms. A big trough is dropping into
place in the Plains states and it will cutoff into another big bowling
ball of an upper low. Meanwhile, pressures will build along the Gulf
Coast by midweek, hopefully helping us to…

…TREND TO DRIER: Today looks like it will be another very wet day
across the area. Everyone won't get big rainfall amounts, but a few
spots could see 3-5 inches. Average rainfall amounts will be around
three quarters of an inch. It will be mostly cloudy, but some
sunshine will break through during the day, pushing the mercury to
around 80F. Rain chances will still be high on Tuesday, but they
should begin to back off by Wednesday.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: It looks like rain chances will be ramping up by
Saturday as the upper low weakens and moves out to the northeast
pushing a front our way. Then some drier air may finally arrive.

TROPICS: The remnants of old Fred will reach the East Coast of the
U.S. by Tuesday. No regeneration is anticipated. The other
disturbance that we have been tracking in the Atlantic is encountering
hostile environmental conditions, and development looks increasingly
unlikely. It will track west northwest then northwest, and poses no
threat.

WEST COAST FIRE DANGER: The combination of severe drought and much
above normal temperatures over the western sections of California and
Oregon will lead to an enhanced wildfire risk in that part of the
country this week.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 191: Tonight, the topic is the climate
change. Author Robert Henson wrote the Rough Guide to Climate
Change. He will join the panelists for a lively discussion about the
ins and outs of this controversial subject. Listen to tonight's show
at www.WeatherBrains.com, as well as all of the archived shows. You
can also subscribe to the podcast in the iTunes Music Store. Follow
the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Hurricane Rita strengthened explosively over
the Gulf of Mexico into a Category Five hurricane and became the third
strongest on record with a central pressure of 897 millibars. With
the memories of the Katrina disaster still fresh on the minds of Gulf
Coast residents, highways were jammed with evacuees leaving coastal
sections of Texas and Louisiana. Follow my weather history tweets

...Wet September...

The 2.54 inches of rain that fell on Saturday at the Birmingham
Airport was a record for the date. The monthly total as of yesterday
stood at 8.39 inches. It makes us start to wonder about how September
2009 stacks up against Septembers of the past. It already ranks as
the ninth wettest September in history. You would think that
September 2004 would rank high, with the 9.75 inches that fell in one
day from Hurricane Ivan. It didn't rain much else that month, so it
ranks as the second wettest. The top banana of September rains is the
13.19 that fell in September 1906.

HOW MUCH MORE? It looks like we will see another 2-3 inches of rain
over the next five days, and this could propel the month into second
place for September rainfalls. A broad upper level trough over the
eastern United States will continue to be our main weather maker
through tomorrow, giving as periodic waves of showers and storms at
just about anytime. By Tuesday, a big bowling ball of an upper low
will move into the Central part of the nation, and pressures will rise
over Alabama. This will finally shut off the faucet to a degree and
help us return a slightly more normal weather pattern. It will still
be warm and humid with scattered showers and storms forming during the
heating of the day in the midweek time frame. It should stay that way
until Saturday. But by the weekend, the new upper low will get ready
to move out, only to be replaced by another one that will anchor
itself over the southwestern United States. As it moves out, it looks
like we could see a cold front that would increase our rain/storm
chances for Sunday.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Freeze watches/warnings for parts of Idaho
through Monday morning, including the Upper Snake River Plain and the
Coeur D'alene area. As the days continue to shorten, this type news
will become more common. Fall starts Tuesday.

TROPICS: The tropical wave about 1,000 miles east of the Lesser
Antilles still has some chance to develop but it is increasingly going
to run into more hostile environmental conditions. The remnants of
Fred will move toward the South Atlantic Coast, likely toward South
Carolina. It has never looked good for regeneration of Fred, and it
seems less and less likely as we go through time.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: Robert Henson, author of the Rough Guide to
Climate Change is slated to be the guest WeatherBrain Monday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 1843: The town of Port Leon, Florida cannot be found
on a modern map of the Sunshine State. On this date, a hurricane
inundated the town with a ten foot storm surge. Almost all of the
buildings in the town were destroyed. One person drowned in the town
and at least a dozen people were killed in surrounding areas. The
townspeople voted unanimously not to rebuild the town. The residents
moved upriver to higher ground and established the town of Newport.

...End In Sight?...

One week ago, we were predicting 3-5 inches of rain would fall across
Alabama in the week ahead. By Thursday, not much had happened, as the
main affects of the low pressure system still had not had much impact
in Alabama. That all changed Thursday night as flash flooding struck
several areas. It continued Friday night over western Alabama. Last
night, it was Central and East Alabama. About 80% of Central Alabama
has received 2 or more inches of rain since last weekend. About 25%
of the region has received between 5-10 inches with a small area of 10
inch amounts in northeastern Jefferson County. Not surprisingly, no
part of Alabama is considered to be even abnormally dry on the U.S.
Drought Monitor. That hasn't been the case in quite some time.

ANY END TO THE RAIN? It looks like that we will see a break in our
extended wet period by midweek as our upper flow backs to
northwesterly, allowing drier air to move into the state and pushing
the battle zone to the south. We won't completely clear out, but
showers and storms will become more scattered in the Wednesday and
Thursday time frame. It still will be warm and humid however, with
highs in the 80s and dewpoints in the upper 60s to near 70.

NEXT WEEKEND: By Friday, it appears that rain chances may really go
down, with only isolated storms during the afternoon hours. That same
trend should continue into the weekend with only slight chances of a
storm on Saturday or Sunday.

LONG RANGE: Look for another period of wet weather toward the end of
the month, with a big storm system perhaps bringing a round of severe
weather around October 3rd-4th.

TROPICS: Still is a chance that the remnants of Fred could regenerate
before they reach Florida tomorrow. The chance is very small.
Moderate chance of a disturbance in the Central Atlantic getting its
act together, but the global models don't do much with it.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: We learned on Friday that legendary
severe weather researcher Chuck Doswell will be our guest on the
November 2nd edition of WeatherBrains. Chuck is very outspoken when
it comes to certain issues in meteorology. Other upcoming guests
include Les Lemon, Robert Henson, Eve Gruntfest, Tim Samaras and Gary
England. Follow WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1885: Storm warning flags were flying from the U.S.
Weather Bureau Signal Office at Galveston TX on the morning of the
20th. The winds blew the flag away, which led to confusion as local
residents with telephones called the Weather Bureau office to see why
the warnings had been lowered. The storm moved along the Texas coast
before heading toward its eventual destination: the Florida
peninsula. Highest winds on the Texas coast were gusts to 48 mph at
Indianola TX, a town that would be obliterated by a hurricane the
following year and abandoned.

Our Hope In Difficult Times

We all struggle. A family in turmoil, job loss, health issues, a mess we
helped create. We live in difficult times.

Facing tough times is different with Jesus Christ than without Him.
Does that sound too "churchy?" Too easy? Don't be dismayed or misled.

Our Hope In Difficult Times is the current sermon series at Hunter
Street Baptist Church. There is hope. You don't have to struggle alone.

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street, 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in
Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org or call 205.985.7295.
