ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Wet September...

The 2.54 inches of rain that fell on Saturday at the Birmingham
Airport was a record for the date. The monthly total as of yesterday
stood at 8.39 inches. It makes us start to wonder about how September
2009 stacks up against Septembers of the past. It already ranks as
the ninth wettest September in history. You would think that
September 2004 would rank high, with the 9.75 inches that fell in one
day from Hurricane Ivan. It didn't rain much else that month, so it
ranks as the second wettest. The top banana of September rains is the
13.19 that fell in September 1906.

HOW MUCH MORE? It looks like we will see another 2-3 inches of rain
over the next five days, and this could propel the month into second
place for September rainfalls. A broad upper level trough over the
eastern United States will continue to be our main weather maker
through tomorrow, giving as periodic waves of showers and storms at
just about anytime. By Tuesday, a big bowling ball of an upper low
will move into the Central part of the nation, and pressures will rise
over Alabama. This will finally shut off the faucet to a degree and
help us return a slightly more normal weather pattern. It will still
be warm and humid with scattered showers and storms forming during the
heating of the day in the midweek time frame. It should stay that way
until Saturday. But by the weekend, the new upper low will get ready
to move out, only to be replaced by another one that will anchor
itself over the southwestern United States. As it moves out, it looks
like we could see a cold front that would increase our rain/storm
chances for Sunday.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Freeze watches/warnings for parts of Idaho
through Monday morning, including the Upper Snake River Plain and the
Coeur D'alene area. As the days continue to shorten, this type news
will become more common. Fall starts Tuesday.

TROPICS: The tropical wave about 1,000 miles east of the Lesser
Antilles still has some chance to develop but it is increasingly going
to run into more hostile environmental conditions. The remnants of
Fred will move toward the South Atlantic Coast, likely toward South
Carolina. It has never looked good for regeneration of Fred, and it
seems less and less likely as we go through time.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: Robert Henson, author of the Rough Guide to
Climate Change is slated to be the guest WeatherBrain Monday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 1843: The town of Port Leon, Florida cannot be found
on a modern map of the Sunshine State. On this date, a hurricane
inundated the town with a ten foot storm surge. Almost all of the
buildings in the town were destroyed. One person drowned in the town
and at least a dozen people were killed in surrounding areas. The
townspeople voted unanimously not to rebuild the town. The residents
moved upriver to higher ground and established the town of Newport.
