ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Who Would Have Thought It...

NOT A DRY SQUARE FOOT IN ALABAMA: Yes, we knew that any time a low-
pressure system forms in the Gulf of Mexico and moves inland, that it
is a decent rain producer. That low which formed about 10 days ago was
not tropical in nature, but it might as well have been. There were
several other factors, too complicated to describe now, but the low
moved northward at times about the speed of a turtle. Much of the
time, Alabama was on the east side of that low-pressure circulation,
which means we got persistent and deep moist air from the Gulf to
blanket the entire state.

The rest is not yet history. While the torrential rain reached its
peak starting late Thursday, we will still have a good chance of some
more showers and thunderstorms tonight and Tuesday. The recovery
process will begin on Wednesday. We will still have scattered showers
and thunderstorms all the way through Sunday, but just not as
numerous. Long-range guidance shows a decent high-pressure system
settling over the Central Plains by next Monday, possibly pushing some
drier and slightly cooler air into Alabama next Monday and Tuesday.

The thunderstorms last night were memorable because of some of the
worst lightning we have seen in many moons and rolling thunder that
lasted so long that windowpanes would vibrate for several minutes.
Undoubtedly, thousands of dogs were scared out of their wits and spent
a restless night with no sleep.

FLASH FLOOD WATCHES AND WARNINGS: A great part of Alabama continues
under a Flash Flood Watch this afternoon and tonight. Flash Flood
Warnings were numerous over the central and west/central counties this
afternoon. They were highly appropriate. At one point today, the
National Weather Service in Birmingham issued something that I do not
ever remember before. Around 10:00 a.m., the NWS issued a Special
Weather Statement about Life Threatening Flash Flooding across Central
Alabama. It was a very timely and appropriate statement. There are so
many flash flood events overnight and today that it is impossible to
report them all. A typical one was from my home area at Moundville in
Hale County where the EMA reported extensive flooding with numerous
roads closed and water damage to several homes. Some roads were washed
out in West Alabama also.

RAIN AMOUNTS: It is difficult to get a handle on final rain totals
this early, but it is near certain that part of West/Central Alabama
got over 10 inches during the night and this morning. I do not believe
there is a single square mile of dry soil in Alabama. I doubt if you
could stir up any dust driving down a dirt country road at 60 mph.

There was so much rain in Alabama recently that even some of the major
rivers will go above flood stage, including the Tombigbee.

ATLANTA: At least 2 fatalities from flash flooding in West Georgia in
the general vicinity of Atlanta. Late last night while we were getting
flooded, a separate family of thunderstorms moved slowly across the
Atlanta area and caused great problems.

TROPICAL: The entire Atlantic Basin was quiet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little pal, Miss Molly, is totally
exhausted today. She went into total seclusion Sunday afternoon and
did not reappear until this morning. She has about 5 safe spots and
she spent the entire night behind my easy chair by our bookshelves. We
took her to bed, but she refused to stay. So now she is sleeping all
day today and I hope she can get a full night of sleep. It only takes
a faint distant peal of thunder to send her into action. But life goes
on despite the mean old storms.
