==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: Our weather will be transitioning to a wet pattern over the
next few days as a series of upper level disturbances and surface low
pressure systems begins to dominate our weather. All of the state should
get a good soaking over the next five days, with up to five inches of rain
falling across parts of the state.

TODAY/TONIGHT: A weak stationary front is draped across Central Alabama on
this Saturday afternoon. An upper level disturbance is exiting to the north
of Alabama, leaving us in an area of subsiding, or sinking air, which has
allowed sunshine to return in fairly full force. Fair skies will continue
across the area tonight with lows in the middle 60s.

SUNDAY: The front will head back north as a warm front tomorrow, and rain
and storms will once again overspread the area. The GFS paints a really wet
picture on Sunday. Some of the storms could be strong to severe with
sufficient instability and decent wind shear.

MEMORIAL DAY FORECAST: As we remember those who gave their lives so that
we could enjoy freedom in the world's greatest nation, it looks like it will
be wet. Showers and thunderstorms should be ongoing at the start of the day
with low pressure to the west of Alabama and a series of upper level
disturbances traversing the region. Once again, storms could be strong to
severe with our area in the warm sector of low pressure just to our
northwest.

REST OF THE WEEK: If you believe the GFS model, you would have to think
that Tuesday will be wet as well. You would have to even imagine that we
could be in a setup for severe weather again on Tuesday. That recitation
should begin to diminish on Wednesday. Sunshine should begin to make a
solid return on Thursday, but we will have to leave a slight rain chance in
the forecast.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL WEATHER: If you have planned a trip to the beautiful beaches
of Alabama and Northwest Florida for Memorial Day, you are likely already
there. Today and tomorrow, expect about 40-50 percent coverage of showers
and storms, with most activity occurring during the afternoon and evening
hours. Monday and Tuesday look to be the wettest days, with about 60-70
percent coverage of showers and storms. This same rather wet pattern will
continue through Thursday with improving conditions for next weekend.
If you are heading to the mountains of East Tennessee and North Carolina,
the wettest day will be Monday. Sunday weather actually looks pretty good,
with only isolated showers and storms during the afternoon, increasing a bit
at night.

ON THIS DATE IN 1809: Contemporary newspaper accounts called it a tornado.
The devastating windstorm caused destruction along a 200 mile long and 60
mile wide path across southern Ohio. Numerous buildings were destroyed from
Cincinnati to Clarksburg. Damage was extensive at Marion. Three small
tornadoes were reported at Cincinnati, but we now know that the damage was
mostly caused by a derecho, a widespread and long lived, damaging windstorm
associated with a complex or line or thunderstorms. The word derecho comes
from a Spanish work, which means straight ahead.

...Wet Memorial Day Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Well, I've got bad news and I've got good news. The bad news
is that Alabama will likely experience a wet Memorial Day weekend. What's
the good news. It seems that Alabama will likely experience a wet Memorial
Day weekend.

BREAKING DOWN THE FORECAST: The upper flow over the United States is
dominated by a large, irregularly shaped upper low over the northern tier of
states. Below the low, a fast, relatively flat flow prevails. A couple of
ripples passing to the north of Alabama will nudge a weak cool front through
the area this morning. Ahead of and along the front, a few showers and
perhaps a storm or two will be occurring. Those showers should slide
further south during the day, leading to some sunshine.

Skis should be fair tonight, into the early morning hours on Sunday. Lows
tonight will drop into the upper 50s. Clouds will return during the day on
Sunday, along with increasing chances for showers and storms as our front
comes back north as a warm front.

Low pressure may be in a favorable position on Monday to give us a high
chance of showers and thunderstorms. That is not good news for outdoor
activities, but our forecast is not poured in concrete, and we reserve the
right to modify it at anytime this weekend in favor of better weather
prospects.

If the low is to our northwest on Monday, storms could be strong and
rainfall amounts could be heavy. We will be monitoring these possibilities.
Rainfall may well continue into Tuesday, and amounts between now and then
may well average above two inches.

Skies will clear temporarily Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, but there
are indications that another disturbance will bring showers and potentially
strong storms Wednesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1942: Iowa experiences its latest snowstorm of record. 10
inches fell at LeMars. Afternoon highs did not move out of the lower 30s in
the northwestern part of the state.

STILL LOOKS WET MEMORIAL DAY: Although we will get some showers and maybe a few thunderstorms over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday, it still looks like our better chance of showers and storms will be later Sunday night, but especially Monday and Monday night. A weak cold front will push down to our south Saturday and start back northward on Sunday. We think Saturday and Sunday will get by with only a few showers or storms.

By Monday, a low pressure system will be approaching the state from the west. It will eventually pass across NW Alabama Monday night. Rainfall could be heavy at times Monday and Monday night. We believe that Central Alabama, from this whole weather system, will get approximately 2 inches of rain, with over 1 inch of that occurring on Monday. The showers should taper off by Tuesday afternoon.

We don’t see any abnormally warm weather for the next five days or so. High temperatures should be very close to normal.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Only a few showers here and there on Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms will increase some on Sunday and they will be more numerous Monday and Tuesday. High temperatures 82-85 and the water temperature in the lower 80s.

FAR AND WIDE: Let’s always remember our military personnel every day of the year, not just on Memorial Day. It’s not exactly comfortable where our troops are in Iraq. The normal high temperature for Baghdad is 106 in June and 109 in July. That city, with a population of millions, gets virtually no rain from June through September. They are expecting a high of 105 tomorrow and 98 on Sunday. Basrah should have a high of 109 Saturday. In Afghanistan, Kabul will have highs in the 70s...back home in the USA, it was 114 in Death Valley yesterday and 23 this morning in the west edge of Yellowstone National Park. That was 4 degrees colder than Alaska’s coldest temperature of 27 at Wainwright...one more note about the devastating tornado on this date in 1997 at Jarrell, Texas. That tornado was so strong that it’s what I call and “earth scraper.” Not only were homes totally destroyed, the debris was picked up and carried away. Stretches of paved highway were rendered bare of asphalt. Brian Peters was one of the members of a survey team later and he can tell you some graphic stories.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: What’s a person to do when his feet have just touched the floor and he hasn’t even had time to get dressed and put his shoes on when a certain little 9-pound creature has other plans. She doesn’t understand that I would appreciate just one cup of yummy coffee before playing with her. I was in the bathroom washing my hands. I left a tiny crack in the door. Little Miss Molly pushed the door open just wide enough to kick her soft ball in there for me to see. It was her clear cut instruction that it was time for a sunrise ballgame. I yielded. Then we went for a walk...there is a sassafras tree along the walking track that has to be the upscale condominium for the bird world. We get a lot of flak every time we walk under that tree. They don’t like intruders from down on the cheap street (Molly and I), but we don’t care. Life goes on.

...Memorial Day Probably Wet...

Not a great deal of confidence in our forecast for Saturday and Sunday, but the forecast for Memorial Day is looking more and more like it will be wet. Maybe not an all day rain, but it should be our best day for showers and thunderstorms over the next several days. A few of those could be strong.
Look for dry weather today. Some showers and possibly a thunderstorm will occur mostly on Saturday morning as a cool front moves through the area.

That front will stall south of Montgomery Saturday and start back northward as a warm front. This will bring us some more showers and storms on Sunday, mostly during the afternoon and night. By Monday, a low pressure system will be approaching the area from the west enhancing the showers and storms.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Only a few showers today. Scattered showers and maybe a thunderstorm Saturday. The best chance will be Sunday and Monday. High temperatures over the weekend and through Monday and Tuesday should be between 82 and 85. The water temperature along the coast is in the lower 80s.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: 114 in Death Valley was yesterday’s hottest. They should have 111 today...it will be below freezing this morning in the Northern Rockies...in Boston, it will be a bit warmer today at 58 and even warmer on Saturday with 72...this May has been one of the coldest on record in Massachusetts...just about all sunshine today and Saturday in Baghdad with highs near 105. In Afghanistan dry weather this weekend with highs near 75 in Kabul.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Subbing for James Spann this morning, so I will throw in a brief Molly episode. We did a lot of walking yesterday and last evening, but most of the walks were uneventful. Sure is a lot of varmints out already. We met at least 5 unusually long earthworms strolling casually down the walk. Molly sure did want to gobble them up, but I saved their lives. Looking for more play time with the little girl today. She treasures it. Life goes on.

...Warmer Days Ahead...

Following an unusually cool day yesterday, a warming trend begins across Alabama today, with most places reaching the mid 80s this afternoon. We will maintain a dry forecast through tomorrow, although moisture levels will slowly rise.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND: As the moisture supply continues to increase, we will be dodging a few showers and thunderstorms over the weekend. Scattered showers and storms should form on Saturday and Sunday, perhaps becoming more numerous by Memorial Day. Daytime temperatures over the weekend will top out in the 82 to 86 degree range, and there will be some fairly decent intervals of sunshine in-between the showers.

NEXT WEEK: Moist air will stay in place across Alabama and the deep south well into next week, which could very well keep our weather wet and unsettled for a while.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of sunshine today and tomorrow, but look out for a few passing showers and storms over the weekend. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s, and the sea water temperature is running right at 80 degrees along the Alabama Gulf coast.

A COOL MAY DAY: A new weather reporting station in Crossville, in DeKalb county northeast of Gadsden, reported a high of only 72 yesterday. Fort Payne’s high was only 73.

A COLD MAY DAY: Boston’s high yesterday was only 46 degrees, a record low maximum temperature for the date. Based on data through yesterday, this is the third coldest May on record in Boston, where records go back to 1872.

ROAMING: The hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 112 degrees. Severe storms produced wind damage over parts of east Texas yesterday afternoon.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: Lets begin with a look at low temperatures across Alabama this morning:

Fort Payne 45
Cullman 46
Crossville 46
Ashland 47
Talladega 48
Pinson 49
Birmingham Airport 54

The weather doesn’t get much better than this in late May in Alabama; lots of sunshine, low humidity, and temperatures below normal. Most places will not reach 80 today thanks to a cool and very dry airmass that dropped into the state yesterday. Tonight will be another cool one as the mercury drops well down in the 50s in most places.

REST OF THE WEEK: Temperatures and humidity levels will slowly rise tomorrow and Friday, and enough moisture could be in place for a few isolated showers late Friday afternoon. But for now the chance of one spot getting wet is so small we will leave it out of the forecast.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: We will be in the process of making the transition from dry weather to wet weather during the holiday weekend, and we will slowly phase in the opportunity for rain. A weak cold front will ease through the state on Saturday, becoming stationary Sunday over the central part of the state. We will mention the chance of a few showers both Saturday and Sunday, but no wash-out is expected. On Sunday the best chance of showers should be south of Birmingham as drier air tries to slip into north Alabama temporarily behind the front.

It still looks like the best coverage of showers and storms will come on Memorial Day, as an upper trough approaches Alabama from the west.

WET WEEK? The computer models continue to advertise relatively wet weather for Alabama and the deep south much of next week, with a deep moisture pool in place and a slow moving upper trough passing through. Looks like there will be a decent chance of rain every day in the May 30-June 3 time frame. Hopefully this will bring some beneficial rain to the state; Birmingham’s rain deficit remains over five inches (5.20” to be exact).

AT THE BEACH: Lots of sunshine each day through Friday, with afternoon temperatures in the 80 to 85 degree range. A check of the sea water temperature earlier today at Pensacola showed 80.8 degrees at 8:00 a.m. Scattered showers and storms will begin to increase along the coast over the weekend, especially Sunday and Monday.

SOUTH ALABAMA HEAT: The mercury soared to 97 degrees at Mobile yesterday, thanks to unusually dry air over the Port City. Pensacola also reached 97 yesterday, a new record high (the old record was 96 in 1941).

NEW ENGLAND COLD: Temperatures in Boston will stay in the 40s all day today with periods of rain. Mt. Washington reported 32 degrees at 8:00 this morning!

...Very Pleasant Weather...

Picture perfect weather will headline our forecast package for today. Maximum available sunshine, low humidity, excellent visibility, and cooler than normal temperatures. Most places will see a high in the 77 to 81 degree range today with a gentle breeze out of the north.

The dry air stays in place for the rest of the week, so we should remain rain-free through Friday with a gradual day to day warming trend.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: We should begin the holiday weekend with dry and warm weather on Saturday, but a weather system in southeast Texas could trigger a few showers by Sunday afternoon. Showers and storms will be more likely on Memorial Day as the system moves eastward along the Gulf coast.

There are indications that a fairly deep pool of moist air will hang over Alabama much of next week, meaning relatively wet weather in the May 30-June 3 time frame.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of sunshine in the days ahead along the Gulf coast. A few scattered showers and storms will show up over the weekend, with rain most likely late Sunday and Monday. Daytime temperatures will rise into the low to mid 80s, and the sea water temperature was up to 81 degrees at Pensacola late yesterday.

A HOT DAY IN MAY: A dry north wind helped push temperatures well into the 90s over southwest Alabama yesterday, Mobile soared to 97 degrees. Other highs included 93 at Evergreen, 94 in Dothan, 93 in Montgomery, and 91 in Tuscaloosa. In contrast, the high yesterday at Desoto State Park, atop Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama, was only 78. The national hot spot yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 111. The high in Las Vegas was 103.

MISS MOLLY ON VACATION: J.B. Elliott, the Alabama weather legend, is taking
a couple of days off, so no Miss Molly stories until Thursday. We don't own
a dog or cat. the big deal in "my little corner of the world" is the end of
baseball season. Our seven year old son plays in the "machine pitch" league
at a local ball park, and his team is in the championship game that will be
played Thursday night. I am one of those "dugout dads" that tries to
maintain order and provide motivational speeches when needed. This has been
an interesting year, the team won the first seven games, then hit a slump
losing four out of five, but they have come back big, winning every game
since then with a big run through the tournament. These are great memories
for a father and son; ones you carry with you for the rest of your life

BACK TO BUSINESS: A nice surge of cooler air moves into the state tonight.
We expect the mercury to drop into the 50 to 55 degree range by daybreak
tomorrow, with upper 40s possible in some of the colder spots. Tomorrow will
feature ample sunshine, low humidity, and very comfortable temperatures for
late May in Alabama. Most places won't even reach the 80 degree mark.

REST OF THE WEEK: For now, we will maintain a rain-free forecast on Thursday
and Friday, with lots of sunshine and only a slow warming trend.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Looks like we will start the weekend off rain-free on
Saturday, but wet weather should return before the weekend is over. A few
showers could show up by Sunday, with showers and storms more likely on
Memorial Day. There are indications in the longer range models that much of
next week will be relatively wet, which is not necessarily bad news.
Birmingham has a rainfall deficit in excess of five inches for the year, and
hopefully that will present an opportunity to get some good soil moisture in
the ground.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of sunshine for the central Gulf coast for the rest of
the week; any showers will be very widely spaced. Daytime temperatures will
peak in the 80 to 85 degree range, and sea water temperatures remain close
to 80 degrees. There will be scattered showers and storms along the coast
over the coming holiday weekend, but nothing at this point to suggest a
wash-out.

SOUTHWEST HEAT: Intense heat has claimed at least 12 lives over the part
four days across the deserts of Arizona, mostly along the Mexican border.
Most of those that died were illegal immigrants. The hottest places in the
nation yesterday were Bullhead City, AZ and Death Valley, CA with 113
degrees. Phoenix reached 106, while the high in Tucson was 105.

ALABAMA HEAT: Mobile soared to 94 degrees yesterday. The mercury reached 93
at Evergreen, 92 at Troy, and 91 at Selma.

DID YOU KNOW? The hottest temperature on record in Birmingham is 107
degrees, recorded on July 29, 1930. Statewide, the hottest temperature on
record is 112 degrees, recorded at Centreville on September 5, 1925.

...Lower Humidity; Cooler Nights...

Rain-free weather will continue across Alabama through mid-week. Drier air will continue to flow into the state today, meaning lower humidity levels and fairly comfortable temperatures. Even cooler air arrives tonight, and by daybreak tomorrow temperatures will drop into the 50 to 55 degree range over the northern half of the state. Some of the normally colder spots might even reach the upper 40s.

Temperatures tomorrow will be below normal for late May despite total sunshine; temperatures will peak only in the upper 70s. Thursday will be dry and pleasant as well. We have mentioned a chance of isolated showers on Friday as a weak front slips into the state, but widespread rain doesn’t look likely.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Any showers that form on Saturday and Sunday should be very widely spaced; most places will be rain-free with temperatures reaching the low 80s. A few showers and thunderstorms are likely by Memorial Day as an fairly strong upper air trough approaches from the west.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of folks are southbound now that school is over for most systems. A few scattered storms will form along the coast today, but tomorrow and Thursday should be mostly sunny. Daytime temperatures will rise into the low 80s, and the sea water temperature is running near 80 degrees along the Alabama coast.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham’s rain total 2005 is still under 20 inches, 19.05”, which is five inches (5.05” to be exact) below normal.

MAY HEAT: Lubbock, TX reached 100 degrees for the first time this year yesterday. Phoenix reached 106, and Death Valley, CA soared to 113 degrees.

ANOTHER DECENT COOL DOWN: You won’t exactly need your sweater, but nighttime temperatures are going to be very comfortable for most of this week. Thanks to some drier and slightly cooler air spreading into Central Alabama tonight, lows by morning will be near 60 with some upper 50s in the valleys. Wednesday morning lows will be in the lower 50s and we could hear of temperatures as low as 48 in places like Bridgeport, Valley Head and Hamilton. Daytime highs won’t be bad. We expect 80 to 83 for the rest of the week.

WE DO NEED RAIN: We had hopes of some beneficial rain with this cold front. A big family of thunderstorms moved across Oklahoma and Arkansas overnight, but they fizzled out this morning over Arkansas. An outflow boundary from those could set off some showers and storms this afternoon, but we think most of them will be south of Birmingham. In fact, the Storm Prediction Center placed South Alabama under a slight risk of severe weather this afternoon and this evening roughly from Demopolis, Montgomery and Auburn southward.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: Still another cold front will arrive Thursday night or Friday morning. This could bring some widely scattered showers and storms. We introduced a few for the Friday forecast, but most of those again will be south of the Birmingham area.

BLISTERING HEAT: The thermometer should sizzle out around 114 degrees this afternoon at Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley—very appropriate names. Las Vegas was expecting 106 and Phoenix 104 to 109. This is record or near record heat for late May. Let’s join all those folks in hoping that this is not a bad omen for the coming summer...on the bottom side of the thermometer, it was a chilly 27 this morning at McCall, Idaho...those big storms had mostly wimped out by the time they got into Arkansas, but overnight there were a number or reports of wind damage in Oklahoma, although no widespread significant damage...Eastern Colorado is a hail prone part of the country. A big storm on this date in 1991 produced so much golf ball-sized hail that 8,000 cars and 5,000 homes were damaged in the Denver Metro Area. The hail accumulated one-half foot deep in suburban Aurora!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Played a lot with little Miss Molly over the weekend and because of that she has followed me more closely than ever. I don’t mind. The honeysuckle are ablaze in our tiny corner and when you step outside at night or early in the morning you think you’re in a perfume factory. So what does little Miss Molly do? Being the city inspector, she wants to sniff every single blossom. She even stands on her hind legs and tries to sniff blossoms above her head. I finally get impatient and tug her along...this morning we ran into that same overweight gnat at the upper end of the walking track. I recognized him and I have named him Charlie. I swung widely with my little blue scoop, but missed again. He is a marked varmint. Surely, my little blue pooper scoop will wind up in a hall of fame or a museum like Billy The Kid’s 6-shooters one of these days. It will have notches. Life goes on.

On the maps this morning a cold front is located over Tennessee,
moving southward. Along the front a large mass of showers and storms is seen
over Arkansas. Those storms should weaken and fall apart this morning, but
new storms will form on the front later today. While a few widely scattered
storms are possible for north Alabama, at this time it looks like the best
chance of storms will be over the southern half of the state this afternoon.
Some of the storms that form today could be strong, but the slight risk of
severe storms from the Storm Prediction Center is for the southern counties
of Alabama.

Rainfall amounts here should be relatively light and spotty, with
totals under a quarter of an inch for the northern half of the state. Some
communities could miss the showers completely.

Cooler air drier air rolls in here tonight, and will set the stage
for some very nice weather through mid-week, with sunny pleasant days and
clear cool nights. We will be in the 50 to 55 degree range by early
Wednesday morning.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: For now the weather looks dry on Saturday and
Sunday, but a few showers or storms could return Memorial Day.

AT THE BEACH: A passing storm is possible late today, but the rest
of the week generally looks great, with lots of sunshine on a daily basis
and high temperatures in the low 80s. The sea water temperature off the
Alabama coast is up to 81 degrees now.

HURRICANE FORECAST: NOAA has released their outlook for the 2005
North Atlantic tropical cyclone season that begins officially on June 1st.
The outlook calls for a 70% chance of above normal activity, in keeping with
the above normal activity that has been occurring since 1995. The outlook
calls for 12-15 named storms, 7-8 hurricanes and 3-5 major (category 3 or
higher) hurricanes. Where these storms will form and what land areas they
will affect is uncertain now. It will be an interesting year.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Mid and high level clouds have been overspreading North Alabama this morning from upstream thunderstorm activity over Missouri. Did you notice the altocumulus clouds that were resent around midmorning in the Birmingham area? Those are the old mackerel clouds, or fish scale clouds that we looked for as kids. They indicate increasing mid-level instability. We always believed they meant rain was ahead. Is it?

THROUGH MONDAY: A cold front is pushing toward northern Arkansas this afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms have been lined up along and ahead of this front. Morning storms over Missouri pushed out an outflow boundary that has been moving steadily southward through the morning hours. By early afternoon, it was located over northern Mississippi. As the front edges closer, showers and storms will form and move into North Alabama tonight or tomorrow morning. The models differ in their timing, with the ETA bringing the rainfall in overnight and the GFS holding off until morning. Rainfall amounts should average around 3/4 of an inch.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE? The front will probably be into North Alabama by midmorning tomorrow. Ahead of the front, thunderstorms will intensify with the heat of the day and increasing wind fields over Central and South Alabama. Storms could become strong to severe, with wind and hail being the primary threats.

REST OF THE WEEK: Behind, the front, dry weather will prevail on Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures with this incoming airmass will be a little cooler. Readings on Tuesday morning might dip below 60 degrees and on Wednesday morning might drop into the refreshing middle 50s over parts of North Alabama. Another front will approach on Thursday, giving us a chance of showers and storms again for Thursday and Friday. The front will stall out to our south on Saturday, possibly giving us continued shower chances into the weekend.

RECORD BIN: Record highs across Colorado Saturday: It was 92F at Grand Junction and 89F in beautiful Alamosa. It was 97F in Pueblo and 90F in Colorado Springs. Several records were set across the Lone Star State. It was 97F in Austin, 99 at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, 99F in Waco, 96F in Houston and 92F in Galveston. It was 111F in Bullhead City, AZ.

HEATBURST! On this date in 1996, sinking air from collapsing evening thunderstorms in Oklahoma warmed as it reached the surface, causing a massive heatburst. The heatburst, with its dramatic increases in temperature and severe straight line winds spread across much of southwestern and central Oklahoma during a 6 hour period. Temperatures rose from the low 80s into the upper 90s and low 100s in just a matter of minutes, in the middle of the night! The mercury spiked to 102F in Chickasha and 105F in Ninnekah! Wind speeds in excess of 70 mph were measured with the heatburst, causing widespread wind damage. An estimated 90 percent of houses in eastern Comanche and western Stephens Counties sustained damage. Power was out for three days in parts of Lawton. Total damage: $18 million.

...The Warming Trend Continues...

GOOD MORNING! Saturday was a beautiful day across the area with lots and lots of sunshine and warm temperatures. Today promises to be a lot like yesterday. We had advertised warmer readings for today, and that looks valid, but I don’t think we will see the warmest readings of the year so far anywhere. As sure as I say that, it will be 95 somewhere.

UNCERTAIN TIMES AHEAD: At least in the weather department. The upper flow over Alabama continues to be out of the northwest, which can lead to some tricky forecasts. Such a pattern is typically busy with impulses that can bring in thunderstorm complexes from time to time, so we will be watching for those.

We will also be watching a weak cold front that will be approaching the area from the northwest tonight and on Monday. This front may set off a few showers and maybe a thunderstorm or two on Monday. The Storm Prediction Center has included Alabama in a slight risk outlook area for severe weather on Monday. I guess that is possible. We might have some hail and wind from any storms that fire, especially with the heat of the day added in. Still, the models have really backed off on rain chances through Monday, so we will have to wait and see.

Tuesday and Wednesday look dry at this time, but we will have to monitor that tricky northwest flow. On Friday, another cold front will approach the area, giving us more shower and storm chances. The front may stall across the area on Saturday and Sunday, maintaining those rain chances through much of the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1960: An 8.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of South Central Chile caused a Pacific-wide tsunami.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: A violent tornado destroyed the town of Saragosa Texas. Thirty people were killed and eleven were injured in the town of only 183 people. 85% of the town’s buildings were wiped off the face of the earth. Many of the victims were parents or grandparents of 4-year-old children at a head start recognition ceremony.
