STILL LOOKS WET MEMORIAL DAY: Although we will get some showers and maybe a few thunderstorms over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday, it still looks like our better chance of showers and storms will be later Sunday night, but especially Monday and Monday night. A weak cold front will push down to our south Saturday and start back northward on Sunday. We think Saturday and Sunday will get by with only a few showers or storms.

By Monday, a low pressure system will be approaching the state from the west. It will eventually pass across NW Alabama Monday night. Rainfall could be heavy at times Monday and Monday night. We believe that Central Alabama, from this whole weather system, will get approximately 2 inches of rain, with over 1 inch of that occurring on Monday. The showers should taper off by Tuesday afternoon.

We don’t see any abnormally warm weather for the next five days or so. High temperatures should be very close to normal.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Only a few showers here and there on Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms will increase some on Sunday and they will be more numerous Monday and Tuesday. High temperatures 82-85 and the water temperature in the lower 80s.

FAR AND WIDE: Let’s always remember our military personnel every day of the year, not just on Memorial Day. It’s not exactly comfortable where our troops are in Iraq. The normal high temperature for Baghdad is 106 in June and 109 in July. That city, with a population of millions, gets virtually no rain from June through September. They are expecting a high of 105 tomorrow and 98 on Sunday. Basrah should have a high of 109 Saturday. In Afghanistan, Kabul will have highs in the 70s...back home in the USA, it was 114 in Death Valley yesterday and 23 this morning in the west edge of Yellowstone National Park. That was 4 degrees colder than Alaska’s coldest temperature of 27 at Wainwright...one more note about the devastating tornado on this date in 1997 at Jarrell, Texas. That tornado was so strong that it’s what I call and “earth scraper.” Not only were homes totally destroyed, the debris was picked up and carried away. Stretches of paved highway were rendered bare of asphalt. Brian Peters was one of the members of a survey team later and he can tell you some graphic stories.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: What’s a person to do when his feet have just touched the floor and he hasn’t even had time to get dressed and put his shoes on when a certain little 9-pound creature has other plans. She doesn’t understand that I would appreciate just one cup of yummy coffee before playing with her. I was in the bathroom washing my hands. I left a tiny crack in the door. Little Miss Molly pushed the door open just wide enough to kick her soft ball in there for me to see. It was her clear cut instruction that it was time for a sunrise ballgame. I yielded. Then we went for a walk...there is a sassafras tree along the walking track that has to be the upscale condominium for the bird world. We get a lot of flak every time we walk under that tree. They don’t like intruders from down on the cheap street (Molly and I), but we don’t care. Life goes on.
