GOOD AFTERNOON: Many thanks to JB for sitting in for me last night so that
I could go to the Baltimore Orioles/Seattle Mariners game at Oriole Park in
Camden Yards. It was a fun game and I had seats on the Club Level for the
group I was entertaining The O's won behind a masterful pitching
performance by Daniel Cabrera. A good time was had by all.

IMPORTANT FORECAST: Weather is important for almost every event. But there
are a few forecasts a year that dramatically impact the lives of literally
hundreds of thousands of people and move economies a point or two here in
Birmingham. City Stages, the Bruno's, they both come to mind. And then
there is Talladega. Over one hundred thousand people will make the
semi-annual pilgrimage to Talladega. And the forecast is a difficult one.

THE FORECAST: Expect a mix of clouds and a little bit of sun today with a
slight chance of a shower. There is about a one in four chance your
location gets wet. The models differ on the amount and coverage of rain
overnight. One is nearly dry, one gives us a good soaking. So we will call
for a good chance of rain tonight. It will be quite breezy through Sunday
afternoon, and a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect.

Sunday looks like a rather chilly, cloudy, damp day with a cool east wind.
There will be a few showers at times, but the days does not look to be a
washout, which is good news for race fans.

Our current weather system falls apart through by Monday, but we stay in a
pattern that gives us a few showers from time to time through Tuesday when a
cold front tries to slide into the area. Nicer weather prevails for
Wednesday and Thursday behind the front, but rain chances begin to increase
again by the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: The Bay of Bengal is shaped like a funnel. At the
tip of the funnel lies the impoverished nation of Bangladesh. When tropical
cyclones sweep up the bay, the waters rise dramatically as they are forced
into the narrowing headwaters. Some of world deadliest disasters have been
the result of devastating tropical cyclones there. Warnings were urgent on
this date in 1991 as Tropical Cyclone 2B swept up the Bay of Bengal. Over
100,000 people evacuated to storm shelters. The storm pounded coastal
region for over 9 hours with 146 mh winds and a 20 foot storm surge. The
government of Bangladesh reported that 140,000 people had died and asked the
World community for $1.4 billion in aid. Under criticism, official would
admit that the number was inflated and it caused some nations to refuse or
reduce their disaster relief efforts.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was
felt across a wide area of the Southeast. The tremor, centered just east of
Fort Payne, Alabama, rattled parts of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, northeast
Mississippi, Kentucky, South Carolina and North Carolina. The earthquake
very nearly was the largest ever recorded in Alabama, behind an October 1916
tremor that measured 5.1 on the Richter scale. Dishes crashed from shelves,
items fell off walls, bricks fell from chimneys and windows cracked, but
damage was relatively minor. Hundreds of calls came into 911 dispatch
centers across the ara within minutes after the earthquake. The event was
not terribly unusual, although rare. Two minor faults like across parts of
northwestern Georgia and earthquakes occur there about every 10-20 years.

...Not Much Rain Today...

Not an easy forecast for the remainder of the weekend. The old storm system
to our west is trying to throw us some curves. There are still indications
that a complex of showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf Coast may cut off
some of our moisture supply for tonight and Sunday.

If that happens, we will not get as much rain as originally expected. At one
time, we thought much of Alabama would get 1 to 2 inches of rain and some
places over 3 inches.

And we have another player on stage-the old wedge. With a deep storm system
approaching from the west and a high pressure area bulging down the Atlantic
Seaboard, we could very well see easterly flow from Georgia keeping our
temperatures down, especially on Sunday. In our forecast late yesterday, we
lowered the Sunday high to the mid 60s. It could even be lower than that. If
you were to be atop Mt. Cheaha in East Alabama Sunday, you might even need a
sweater or light jacket. There is a chance that temperatures, atop the
mountain and in other places like Roanoke and Heflin, could hang out in the
upper 50s.

THE RAIN SITUATION: Not much today, although some scattered showers could
appear by this afternoon. There is a better chance tonight. There is also a
good chance that most areas will see rain on Sunday. At times it may be just
plain rain instead of showers and there could be some drizzle also. This is
race weekend at Talladega. Today looks decent with a good chance of no
interruptions. Sunday could be a different question, but it should not be an
all day rain.

BEYOND SUNDAY: Afternoons will gradually become milder with highs Monday
through Wednesday in the mid to upper 70s. There is still a chance of
showers on all three of those days.

ELSEWHERE: The worst weather Saturday was in the Southern Plains. Parts of
Central Texas were under a moderate risk for severe weather.

THE ALABAMA STORY: And the story is one of change and possibly some
good news that the wet weather system is slowing down and we may not get as
much rain as earlier expected. Saturday looks mostly dry, although some
showers could show up later in the day. However, the better chance of
showers and maybe a thunderstorm will hold off until some point Saturday
night.

On Sunday, there could be a shower at almost any time, but not an
all day rain. There will also be some scattered thunderstorms. The mean old
weather models have backed off considerably on the extent and amount of rain
over the weekend. There is still some indication that a complex of
thunderstorms will move east along the Mississippi and Alabama-NW Florida
coast Sunday, which could rob some of the inland areas of moisture.

Also, we do not see a complete drying out for early next week, with
a slight chance of showers on Monday and Tuesday.

WEEKEND TEMPERATURES: For people at the Talladega Racetrack, highs
on Saturday will be in the mid 70s. There is a chance that some slightly
cooler air will be pulled westward from Georgia and keep highs on Sunday in
the upper 60s. We don't see any unusually warm weather for the next 5 to 7
days with most highs in the 70s.

LAST NIGHT'S CHILL: Won't see too many more cool morning like that
until next Fall. Here are a few lows around Alabama this morning. A more
complete list is on the ABC/3340 Weather BLOG.

37 in Hamilton and at Cullman Airport
38 in Black Creek
39 in Heflin and DeSoto State park
40 at Pinson and Centreville
41 in Ft. Payne and Ashville
42 in Jasper, Livingston, Crossville, Alabaster
43 in Wadley, Anniston, Alexander City
44 in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery
46 in Birmingham

FRIDAY NOTES: 16 was the coldest in the lower 48 this
morning at Marquette, Michigan...93 was the hot spot Thursday at Ft.
Lauderdale and at Pecos in West Texas...a moderate risk of severe weather
posted today for parts of Central Texas. A slight risk will shift further
eastward Saturday and by Sunday, a slight risk for much of Mississippi.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Wish me luck in Rook tonight. Our team
is about 600 points behind for the year. We only play one game that runs all
year. I need to shoot the moon tonight which will help us quickly gain 500
points...out before sunrise this morning and the chill sure did feel good.
The Old Crow Motel looked great silhouetted against the early light of
dawn...that old lady looks better than she did last year with more foliage
and healthier leaves. Little Miss Molly sure enjoyed her morning walk, but
for some reason she upset dogs from one end of the walking track to the
other. On the other side of the walking track, a new dog lives with Jo-Jo
and he has the strangest bark. It is a long lonesome howl which ends with a
quick high note like he has the croup. That sets off other dogs. This
morning the dogs, along with the birds, made me think I was at a square
dance. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns Over The Weekend...

If you enjoyed the day yesterday, you should love our forecast today. Lots
of sunshine with a nice warm-up. After a chilly start, most communities
should reach the upper 70s this afternoon. But, enjoy the day because we
will have rain to deal with at times over the weekend.

WET WEEKEND: Actually, we now believe much of the day tomorrow will be dry.
A shower is possible during the afternoon, but rain and storms will become
widespread tomorrow night. For now it looks like the air will be too stable
for any major severe weather threat, but rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are
likely.

While we still think the rain will begin to taper off by midday Sunday, we
still can't rule out some rain Sunday afternoon. So, take the rain gear if
you are headed over to Talladega for the big race (the Aaron's 499).

WEEKEND WEDGE? Much cooler will be moving into Georgia from the east by
tomorrow night, and some of that cool air could reach the eastern half of
Alabama over the latter half of the weekend. It could be that places like
Anniston and Talladega have highs only in the low 60s on Sunday, while
Tuscaloosa and Demopolis reach the mid 70s. I would not be totally surprised
if some communities near the Georgia border wind up with highs only in the
upper 50s on Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like we need to hang on to a chance of showers early next
week on Monday and Tuesday as the upper air low slowly fills to the north of
us, and a weak surface front hangs around. Rain should be especially
widespread or heavy, however.

ROAMING: National hot spots yesterday were in Florida, where Fort Lauderdale
and Vero Beach reached 93 degrees.

DOWNHILL FOR WEEKEND WEATHER: Another great day weather-wise for
Friday, but after that we go skidding downhill. It looks now that Saturday
morning will continue to be dry with showers and thunderstorms arriving
later. They could even hold off until late afternoon, especially over on the
east side of the state.

During this episode of foul weather, the most numerous showers and
thunderstorms will be Saturday night through Sunday morning. Sunday
afternoon is still a big question mark. This is important because of race
weekend at Talladega. We cannot rule out showers and some storms continuing
Sunday afternoon, even though we think the strongest ones will be Sunday
morning.

There is also a risk of some heavy rain during this event. One of
our models paints a strong cluster of thunderstorms near the
Mobile-Pensacola area Sunday morning. If that happens, it could cut down on
the amount of rain inland over South and East Alabama. But you know weather
models-they sometimes change their minds as often as a little puppy. We will
be able to really zero in on the timeline in our Friday editions. (See our
day-by-day forecast.)

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: It is still the one weather phenomenon
that I am most afraid of. Did you know that an average flash of lightning
could keep a 100-watt light bulb burning for 3 months?

MIXED BAG: More than an inch of rain in the last 24 hours in the
Alabama towns of Wadley, Pell City, Ashland, Montgomery...coolest
temperatures in the state this morning: 43 in Hamilton, 45 in Cullman, 46 in
Collinsville and Meridianville, 47 in Jasper, 48 in Huntsville, Vinemont and
Decatur...lowest USA temperature 4 below at Wainwright, Alaska and in the
lower 48 it was 21 at Big Piney, Wyoming...have not checked on Mt.
Washington, New Hampshire in a long time. It was 18 this morning and blowing
snow, 12 inches on the ground, wind chill minus 5, wind gusts to 55.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I want to ignore Little Miss Molly
today in favor of a story from Carla McFarland. I asked permission to use
this story in the hope that it would make us all appreciate our pets more
and treasure our time with them. Carla's cocker spaniel, Brandy, developed a
cancerous tumor the size of a golf ball. It grew to the size of a softball
in two short months. Carla has a great vet and he told her that Brandy would
let her know when it was time to go. About a week ago, Brandy woke up and
put her head under Carla's hand wanting her to pet her. She had never done
that before, because she preferred belly rubs. Carla is sure that it was
Brandy's way of telling her she was ready to go. Carla had read a book
recently called, "Getting Lucky," by Susan Marino. It was a story about a
dog coming to live his last days in a hospice called "Angel's Gate." On
April 21, the Pell City Animal Hospital was loving and compassionate during
Brandy's last moments. Carla will never forget how beautiful Brandy looked
in her box holding her favorite toy. Brandy was buried April 22 at Carla's
parent's farm next to her cat, Max. If Carla's story does not touch us, I
don't know what will. I dread the day when I face that with Little Miss
Molly. I plan to post a longer story on the BLOG.

...A Brighter Day For Alabama...

Beautiful weather headlines our forecast package for Alabama today and
tomorrow. Ample sunshine, highs in the 70s, and cool nighttime temperatures.
Not bad at all. But, more change is ahead for the weekend.

RACE WEEKEND: NASCAR fans will be dealing with some rain at the Talladega
Superspeedway this weekend, but the news is not all bad. Showers and storms
will move into Alabama during the day Saturday as a major storm system winds
up over the middle of the nation.
For now, it looks like the most widespread rain will come Saturday night
into Sunday morning, in the general time frame from 6:00 p.m. Saturday
through 12:00 noon on Sunday. Based on the strength of the system, some
strong to severe storms will be possible across Alabama during this time
frame. The big question is the instability; it remains to be seen if the air
cane become very unstable after dry air settles in here today and tomorrow.
But, it is certainly possible.

The rain should taper off from west to east during the midday hours Sunday,
which means there is a chance the race at Talladega will actually be run on
time.

NEXT WEEK: Clouds could linger into Monday, along with some risk of
scattered light rain. The middle of next week should be dry with
temperatures at or below normal levels for early May in Alabama.

HIGH WINDS: The Tallapoosa County EMA Office reported non-thunderstorm wind
damage at 6:40 tonight 2 miles WNW of New Site. The apparent gustnado
caused extensive damage to a house on Goldville Cutoff Road. Radar and storm
spotters reported showers/sprinkles in the area but no thunderstorm.

GREAT WEATHER NEXT TWO DAYS: After we get rid of all of these low
clouds, fog, showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening, look
for a 180-degree turnaround for our weather tomorrow and Friday.

We can give the credit to a cold front that was pushing its way into
North and West Alabama this afternoon. It is not exactly a speed demon, but
it was bringing noticeably cooler temperatures. All afternoon temperatures
have been hanging out in the mid 50s over NW Mississippi and West Tennessee.

This afternoon, a line of strong thunderstorms formed near the front
dumping locally heavy rain. Those will move on to the east fairly quickly.
By nightfall, most of the showers and storms will be east of the Birmingham
area and they will be ending later this evening over on the east side of the
state. Look for mostly sunshine both Thursday and Friday with cool mornings
and pleasant afternoons. The humidity will be much lower.

NASCAR WEEKEND: This is race weekend at Talladega. The last two
model runs have agreed fairly well that the next best chance of showers and
thunderstorms will be mainly late Saturday and Saturday night and into
Sunday morning. Difficult to say if all of the showers will be east of
Talladega by Sunday afternoon, but we think there is a good chance of that.
Looks like a heavy rain event for much of Central Alabama late Saturday
through Sunday morning. High temperatures both Saturday and Sunday at the
racetrack should be in the 70s.

WEDNESDAY WANDERINGS: Thunderstorms to the east of Alabama became
severe this afternoon with a Watch posted mainly in South Carolina...there
were even several Tornado Warnings...1.47 inches of rain at Muscle Shoals in
the NW corner of Alabama overnight...102 degrees at Laredo, Texas was the
USA hotspot Tuesday...coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 10 at Aspen
Springs, Colorado...it was 25 in Denver and 17 out on the Eastern Plains at
Limon. That is quite cold for so late...coldest in Alaska was 2 above zero
at Norutak.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With our recent installation of DSL
internet access, our security people came by today to install a filter,
otherwise we would not know when there was a fire or burglar. After the
gentleman installed it, he tested the system which sets off an extremely
loud alarm. You guessed it-Little Miss Molly almost jumped through the
ceiling. She was so scared she was shaking like an Aspen leaf in the Rocky
Mountains during a brisk wind. We held her and talked to her, but she would
not settle down until the installer left. She knew he was a big
noisemaker...sure did enjoy our walks today. Everything around the walking
track is so lush and green that it almost looks like a rainforest...the
birds seemed happy and Little Miss Molly was as happy as a lark...haven't
seen the CR (Community Rabbit) in well over a week. Sure hope they have not
bailed out on us...we enjoy them and it gives Molly a huge thrill...no crows
or the Community Cat recently either...life goes on.

...Cool with Rain At Times Today...

Cool and wet weather headlines our forecast for Alabama today. With clouds
and occasional rain, temperatures should hold in the 60s all day,
considerably cooler than recent days. While a few rumbles of thunder are
possible, we don't expect any severe weather problems with a stable airmass
in place. Rainfall amounts of about one-half inch are likely for most
communities.

The rain should taper off from west to east this afternoon, and the sky will
clear tonight as much drier air slips into the state. That dry will set the
stage for delightful weather tomorrow and Friday. Ample sunshine, highs in
the 70s.

RACE WEEKEND: NASCAR fans are paying close attention to our weekend forecast
since this is race weekend at Talladega. A few showers or storms could show
up Saturday afternoon as moist air returns to Alabama. Showers and storms
are likely on Sunday as a major storm gets it act together over the middle
of the nation. There is chance some storms on Sunday will be strong to
severe. While it won't rain all day, there could be a shower or storm at
almost anytime Sunday.

Highs over the weekend should be mostly in the mid 70s across Alabama.

LONG RANGE: Computer model data suggests a mean upper air trough over the
eastern U.S. setting up next week, perhaps lasting through the first 10 days
of
May. This would suggest temperatures at or below normal levels for Alabama
and the Deep South.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: The heaviest rain in Alabama yesterday was over the far
southern counties of the state; the total at the Mobile Airport was 0.50:;
nearby Brookley Field measured 0.61" At Evergreen, in Conecuh County between
Mobile and Montgomery, the total was 0.17".

...Storms Develop This Afternoon...

Some big changes coming in our weather during the next 48 hours. We expect
showers and storms to fire up this afternoon over the northwest part of the
state, spreading southeastward during the night tonight as a surface front
moves through Alabama. The Storm Prediction Center maintains a slight risk
of severe storms for this afternoon and tonight, with the primary threat
coming from hail and strong winds. Seems like the best chance of severe
storms will come from around 4:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight.

A COOL CHANGE: Much cooler air settles into the state tomorrow; looks like
we stay in the 60s all day; quite a change from the summer-like days of
late. Rain will continue tomorrow morning, but should end from west to east
during the midday and early afternoon hours.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: We expect delightful springtime weather on these two days
with ample sunshine and highs in the low to mid 70s.

WEEKEND PEEK: We will be dodging some raindrops over the weekend. Since this
is race weekend at Talladega, there is high interest in the rain threat
among NASCAR fans. For the moment it looks like the best chance of rain will
come from around mid-afternoon Saturday through Sunday morning. But, the
timing could change as we approach the weekend. Stay tuned.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total so far this month is 6.88", which has
pushed our rain surplus for the year to 6.74". The Alabama Gulf Coast
remains very dry however; in Mobile the total for the year is only 8.32",
almost 14 inches below normal.

ROAMING: National hot spot yesterday was Laredo, TX with 99 degrees. A
tornado touched down near El Reno, OK late yesterday.

BACK TO THUNDER AND LIGHTNING: We had an overdose of that last
week, but we must face some more thunderstorms tomorrow and Wednesday.
Nothing at all going on tonight. It should be mostly fair with pleasant
temperatures. We think the best chance of showers and thunderstorms will
start later in the day tomorrow and extending through the night and for a
time Wednesday morning. The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked about the
NW half of Alabama for a Slight Risk of severe weather for Tuesday. As
always, we will watch that closely.

A cold front will follow the storminess and give us some very
pleasant weather and even some chilly nights Thursday and Friday. Indeed, we
are calling for low temperatures in the mid 40s across Central Alabama early
Thursday morning. Places like Hamilton, Valley Head and DeSoto State Park
should not have some low 40s. One of the cooler temperatures in the state
this morning was 48 in Hamilton and Rock Mills. Tonight's lows should be
mostly in the 60s.

LAST WEEK'S HAIL: If that wasn't an overdose of large hail, I don't
know what is. Can't remember that much hail in Alabama during such a short
timeframe. While the biggest hailstorms were in places like Blount and St.
Clair Counties, the largest size hailstone reported was apparently 4.25
inches in diameter (softball size) in the wee morning hours of Friday in
Walker County a few miles WNW of Jasper. No confirmed damage from that. It
may have fallen in an open area.

ROAMING ALL OVER: Had a delightful drive Saturday down into Hale
County where I grew up and, ah, yes, had to include Havana Junction. When I
was growing up there, there were two country stores and a cotton gin. All
three are closed now, but still a delight to go through there. Decoration
Day at our old family church in East Hale County known as
Springhill...again, I am convinced that Bibb County has the most trees per
square mile of any county in Alabama...at midday, Laramie, Wyoming was
reporting 25 degrees with heavy snow. Rock Springs had 29 degrees and 37 mph
winds...3.58 inches of rain at Bridgeport, Connecticut over the weekend...99
degrees at Wink, Texas was the Sunday hotspot in the USA...it was 20 this
morning in Cut Bank, Montana and 13 below in good old Deadhorse,
Alaska...yes, this is the prime severe weather season in the south. A big
outbreak on this date in 1908 when 18 tornadoes touched down from Louisiana
to Georgia. Hardest hit was Hattiesburg where 143 persons were killed.
Mississippi in all had 155 deaths. Most of Purvis, Mississippi was wiped
out...a tornado at Amite, Louisiana was reported as 2.5 miles wide...37
persons were killed in Alabama.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One nice thing about Little Miss
Molly-she doesn't carry a grudge. She pouted quite a bit during our last
severe weather because I had no time to play with her, but yesterday morning
the minute I started playing kickball with her, she was happy as a lark and
all was forgiven. It sure would be nice if we humans were that way...when we
got back from Hale County, she was extra glad to see us because we had been
gone 10 hours and I didn't think she would ever stop jumping up and down
with joy. We spent a lot of time Saturday evening catching up on loving her.
Each walk over the weekend, I let Molly be the boss and she took a record

...Another Warm One...

GOOD MORNING: Boy, was Sunday a special kind of day weather wise? It was
so beautiful driving in the afternoon with the blue sky and green trees and
just enough haze to give the distant hills that kind of gun metal hue that
we love from the Smoky Mountains. A great day.

TODAY: Today looks like another nice one, with lots of sunshine and just a
few clouds. Temperatures will rise in to the middle and upper 80s.
Moisture levels will be slowly rising in advance of our next storm system.
That will allow overnight readings only to fall into he middle 60s.

TUESDAY: The computer models have been slowing down the arrival of our next
storm system. It is a cold front that will be approaching Alabama from the
northwest. Showers and thunderstorms will push into the state during the
late afternoon and evening and push through the area overnight. There is a
chance that some of the storms could be strong to severe.

WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: The slower movement of the next system means that showers
and storms may be with us through the morning hours on Wednesday. This may
also delay the clearing until late in the day or evening. High pressure
will settle into Alabama, giving us fine weather for Thursday and Friday.
It will be cooler behind the front. Highs on Wednesday may remain in the
60s. Thursday will see lower 70s, and Friday will see mid 70s. Lows will
be in the 40s.

WEEKEND: Another cold front will sink slowly into Alabama by Saturday.
This will lead to increasing showers and storms Saturday night into Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1908: In Alabama, a family of tornadoes that produced F4
damage first touched down in Walker County near Dora. It moved into
Jefferson County, where two people died at Warrior. 15 people died near
Albertville in Marshall County. A total of 37 people were killed in
Alabama. It was part of an outbreak of tornadoes that killed a total of 310
people from Louisiana to Georgia.
