GOOD AFTERNOON: Many thanks to JB for sitting in for me last night so that
I could go to the Baltimore Orioles/Seattle Mariners game at Oriole Park in
Camden Yards. It was a fun game and I had seats on the Club Level for the
group I was entertaining The O's won behind a masterful pitching
performance by Daniel Cabrera. A good time was had by all.
IMPORTANT FORECAST: Weather is important for almost every event. But there
are a few forecasts a year that dramatically impact the lives of literally
hundreds of thousands of people and move economies a point or two here in
Birmingham. City Stages, the Bruno's, they both come to mind. And then
there is Talladega. Over one hundred thousand people will make the
semi-annual pilgrimage to Talladega. And the forecast is a difficult one.
THE FORECAST: Expect a mix of clouds and a little bit of sun today with a
slight chance of a shower. There is about a one in four chance your
location gets wet. The models differ on the amount and coverage of rain
overnight. One is nearly dry, one gives us a good soaking. So we will call
for a good chance of rain tonight. It will be quite breezy through Sunday
afternoon, and a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect.
Sunday looks like a rather chilly, cloudy, damp day with a cool east wind.
There will be a few showers at times, but the days does not look to be a
washout, which is good news for race fans.
Our current weather system falls apart through by Monday, but we stay in a
pattern that gives us a few showers from time to time through Tuesday when a
cold front tries to slide into the area. Nicer weather prevails for
Wednesday and Thursday behind the front, but rain chances begin to increase
again by the weekend.
ON THIS DATE IN 1991: The Bay of Bengal is shaped like a funnel. At the
tip of the funnel lies the impoverished nation of Bangladesh. When tropical
cyclones sweep up the bay, the waters rise dramatically as they are forced
into the narrowing headwaters. Some of world deadliest disasters have been
the result of devastating tropical cyclones there. Warnings were urgent on
this date in 1991 as Tropical Cyclone 2B swept up the Bay of Bengal. Over
100,000 people evacuated to storm shelters. The storm pounded coastal
region for over 9 hours with 146 mh winds and a 20 foot storm surge. The
government of Bangladesh reported that 140,000 people had died and asked the
World community for $1.4 billion in aid. Under criticism, official would
admit that the number was inflated and it caused some nations to refuse or
reduce their disaster relief efforts.
ON THIS DATE IN 2003: An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was
felt across a wide area of the Southeast. The tremor, centered just east of
Fort Payne, Alabama, rattled parts of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, northeast
Mississippi, Kentucky, South Carolina and North Carolina. The earthquake
very nearly was the largest ever recorded in Alabama, behind an October 1916
tremor that measured 5.1 on the Richter scale. Dishes crashed from shelves,
items fell off walls, bricks fell from chimneys and windows cracked, but
damage was relatively minor. Hundreds of calls came into 911 dispatch
centers across the ara within minutes after the earthquake. The event was
not terribly unusual, although rare. Two minor faults like across parts of
northwestern Georgia and earthquakes occur there about every 10-20 years.
