...A Cold Rain...

Very dry air over the northern half of Alabama delayed the onset of precipitation this morning. But the mass of rain was slowly spreading northward before noon and will continue to do so this afternoon and overnight. The rain extends all the way back to eastern Texas where you find a low pressure system along the Texas Coast. This low should move into Mississippi overnight and weaken.

FREEZING PRECIPITATION: With the dry air mass in place this morning over Central Alabama, it was feared that evaporative cooling might allow temperatures to briefly drop to near or just below freezing, setting up the possibility of some freezing precipitation. Sleet was also a possibility, but a nose of warm air just above the surface kept the reports isolated. There still is a chance that there could be freezing rain this afternoon over the higher elevations of Northeast Alabama, in parts of Jackson and DeKalb Counties.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: The rain will end Sunday morning. The airmass left behind will be warmer. Skies should remain mostly cloudy tomorrow, but highs will top out around 60 degrees. It should be dry Sunday night with lows in the 40s. Strong low pressure will be moving into Missouri Monday morning, with increasing southerly winds pulling moisture into Alabama. Highs on Monday will be very nice, with highs around 70. Showers will be possible during the day, but the main rainfall will hold off until late in the day. Rain will be likely Monday night and continue through much of Tuesday. The rain should end by Wednesday. Much colder weather will move in for the second half of the week. Things should be dry through the weekend.

GEMINIDS WATCH: The annual Geminid meteor shower has been intensifying, and researchers say 2009 could be the best year yet. This year's display peaks on Dec. 13th and 14th. The best time to look will be Sunday night, early Monday morning after 10 p.m. One hundred meteors per hour could be observed, emanating from the constellation Gemini.

WEATHERBRAINS: One of our most exciting shows last Monday night as legendary Oklahoma City television meteorologist Gary England joined the cast. This week, the focus is on winter storm preparedness as Patrick Spoden of the National Weather Service Paducah joins us. They just thought they were prepared before last January's crippling ice storm in Kentucky. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THE DATE IN 1967: The snow began just after midnight. By mid-morning, it was falling heavily. By sundown, 26.8 inches of snow was on the ground at Flagstaff, Arizona, located at elevation 7,000 feet on the Arizona Plateau. Another big snow would begin to fall on the 14th, and in just over 24 hours, it dumped another 15.5 inches on the beleaguered city. More snow began to fall around noon on the 16th, with another 9.5 inches adding to the snow totals. The biggest snowfall of the extended snowstorm began on the 18th and did not let up for nearly two days, as a whopping 29.9 inches fell. When all was said and done, a grand total of 83 inches was on the ground, shattering the old record of 68 inches. The unrelenting snows hit the area hard. ...Cold and Rainy Saturday...

It not only felt chilly Friday across the area, but it almost seemed like you could smell snow in the chilly northwest wind. That is not as far-fetched as it sounds, as the trajectory of the airmass was blowing straight across the snowfields to the northwest of Alabama.

LIGHT WINTRY MIX THIS MORNING: We headline this morning's forecast package with a threat of a little bridge icing as a cold rain begin for your Saturday across Central Alabama. With low dewpoints, the initial precipitation that falls will evaporate, and this process removes heat from the atmosphere, allowing temperatures to drop a few degrees. This may allow readings to fall below freezing n spots. Remember that breezes freeze before other road surfaces, and this could lead to some bridge icing early this morning as sleet or a light wintry mix falls. We urge you to check the latest conditions and forecasts before driving early this morning. Temperatures will edge back above freezing in all areas by mid-morning, eliminating the travel problems and leaving a cold and rainy Saturday ahead with periods of rain and highs around 42F. Temperatures will hold steady in the lower 40s through the night.

REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Periods of rain will continue through tonight, tapering off by Sunday morning. There could be a little sun Sunday afternoon, and it will be partly cloudy Sunday night, but clouds will thicken by Monday morning as the next storm system rolls our way.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: The week will start with a nice warm up and highs near 70F. Rain and storms will become likely Monday night into
early Tuesday. Some chance that they could be on the strong side. Clearing and colder conditions by Wednesday will set the stage for a cool remainder of the week. We stay rain free, until, and perhaps through the weekend.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: The Magic City welcomes all the fans of Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M for the SWAC Championship game this afternoon at Legion Field. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. on national TV. Expect a cold rain, which may be steady at times. The temperature at kick off should be around 39 or 40 but slowly rising to about 42 as the game goes on.

WEATHERBRAINS: Episode 202 may have been the best one ever. Oklahoma City weather legend Gary England joined us for a frank and fun discussion about big events in Oklahoma, the effect of the economy on his station's weather operation and is famous run-ins with the NWS when he was young. Are you ready for winter storms. Find out on this week's episode with Patrick Spoden of the National Weather Service Paducah. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1962: Citrus growers in Florida experienced their worst freeze of the century as temperatures dropped to as low as 12F. When temperatures reach 28F, ice crystals begin to form inside the fruit. Citrus production was cut nearly half in the following year from 113 million boxes in 1961-62, but dropped to 55.1 million boxes in 1963-64. Over two million trees were killed by the freeze. ...An Uncomfortable Weekend...

WET IS THE WORD: Not only wet, but a bone-chilling rain at that. There are a number of things that we need to watch closely. The onset of precipitation and what the temperature will be at that time is our main concern.

As it stands now, we look for a slight chance of light rain mixed with light sleet very late tonight and toward daybreak. The early daylight hours of Saturday will be the most questionable time. The rain may mix with light sleet or even some light freezing rain early in the day, but eventually to all rain later Saturday morning and afternoon.

There is another factor we need to consider. After some very cold temperatures last night and this morning, the infrastructure is already chilled, so it will not take very much light freezing rain to cause some slick spots. We do not really think it will be a major problem, but if you are out driving very early tomorrow, pay close attention to the temperature.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: Saturday will be a chilly, unpleasant day. A moderating trend will set in Sunday with early morning lows in the mid 40s and afternoon highs in the mid 50s. Temperatures will feel spring-like on Monday reaching the lower 70s, but do not take it for granted very long. There will be some showers on Monday and possibly even a thunderstorm. Those will linger through much of Tuesday morning and it will be turning sharply cooler. By Wednesday, Thursday and maybe even Friday mornings we will be back down into the low to mid 30s at night.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The Annual SWAC Championship Game will be at Legion Field Saturday afternoon between Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M. Kick off is at 1:00 p.m. on national TV. Expect a cold rain, which may be steady at times. The temperature at kick off should be around 39 or 40 but slowly rising to about 42 to 45 as the game goes on.

THE 2010 HURRICANE SEASON: Yes, that is a long time ahead, but Dr. William Gray and his associates at Colorado State University realize that. However, they did issue a preliminary outlook and it indicates an enhanced season with 11-16 named storms, including 6 to 8 hurricanes and 3 to 5 major hurricanes. There is a chance of 1 major hurricane striking the U.S. mainland, about a 52% chance. There is a 40% chance of a hurricane moving ashore along the East Coast and from the Florida Peninsula westward to the south tip of Texas. The hurricane forecast for the season just ended was way off, so do not get too concerned yet.

ROAMING: Again this morning, 51% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover--less than 3% a month ago today. 21 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours at Herman in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Low temperatures this morning: 25 below at Big Piney, Wyoming and 20 below at Northway, Alaska. A very warm 89 in Miami yesterday. A nice note from Gary Petti who used to be the MIC at NWS in Birmingham and now retired north of Tampa. He says he has only turned the heat on twice in November and none so far in December.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I truly believe that Little Miss Molly is 90% back to normal. She is back to her old routine, which includes finding me in the house and glaring at me until I play ball. Often she will already assemble the balls where I can start throwing them easily. If I do not act fairly quickly, she goes to slinging the balls all over the living area and running berserk. I will catch up playing with her this weekend and we will take a number of walks. I need the exercise anyway. Life goes on. J. B. Elliott

...A Cold, Wet Start To The Weekend...

COLD AIR STAYS IN PLACE: We are projecting another cold, dry day for Alabama with a partly sunny sky and a high in the mid 40s following a significant morning freeze. Clouds will thicken tonight in advance of another system moving along in the southern branch of the jet stream, which promises to bring wet weather to our state as start the weekend.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: A cold rain will move up into Alabama tomorrow, and we will continue to monitor for any potential early morning precipitation that could fall in the form of freezing rain, which is liquid precipitation that falls when surface temperatures are 32 degrees or colder. The latest model data hints that most of the rain early tomorrow will be over the southern half of the state, then moving up into North Alabama by late morning when temperatures will be above freezing. Just keep in mind anything if any rain does develop early tomorrow, it could mean some scattered bridge icing. Periods of rain are likely through the day with temperatures struggling to reach the low 40s. Rain will continue at times tomorrow night into Sunday, with storm totals of around 1 inch likely. The rain will begin to taper off late in the day Sunday as the lead wave moves on to the east.

NEXT WEEK: The active weather pattern continues. Monday will be noticeably warmer as temperatures rise well into the 60s. There will be sufficient moisture to mention a chance of scattered showers Monday, but it won't rain all day and the sun might peek out a time or two. Then, another good rain event is likely on Tuesday with rain and thunderstorms likely. Colder and drier air will follow that rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: A vast snow cover remains from the mountains of Arizona to the Great Lakes. Coldest spot in the nation was Big Piney, Wyoming with 28 degrees below zero. The high in Chicago was only 8 degrees. While less than three inches of snow fell on Buffalo, with winds gusting between 50 mph and 60 mph it was enough to blind drivers, ground flights and force most area schools to close. Frequent thunder and lightning lit up the sky. In Northern Arizona, 25 to 30 elk hunters remained stranded for a fourth day in below-freezing temperatures and searchers worried they were running low on food and heating fuel. The Coconino County sheriff's office said the hunters were trapped by the 2 to 3 feet of snow that fell Monday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: One of the century's worst nor'Easters strikes the Northeast. Hurricane force winds were recorded in several locations and record high tides flooded coastal areas. New York City picked up a wind gust to 93 mph. Flooding closed LaGuardia Airport and the entire subway system in New York was shutdown for 3 hours. The wind was sustained at over 60 mph for several hours at Boston MA. Over 32 inches of snow fell at Worcester MA, which was a record for a single storm there. 37 inches of snow fell at Stanford NY.

...Topsy-Turvey December...

MORE CHANGES AHEAD: All of this changeable weather we have had lately is not that unusual for this time of year. Already this month we have had some real cold temperatures interspersed with good amounts of rain and even some severe thunderstorms.

Tonight our main concern is a widespread freeze. We are calling for an average low across Central Alabama to be around 24. Undoubtedly it will be closer to 20 in some of the traditionally colder NE Alabama valleys.

Clouds will start moving in Friday, especially by afternoon, and it will not be quite as cold as today. We believe the chance of rain will hold off until after midnight Friday night. High temperatures will be in the mid 40s. That is quite a change from today. Early this afternoon it was only in the mid 30s across extreme North Alabama and mostly in the 40s down state.

Saturday is going to be a day that is uncomfortable and one which you would like to skip. We believe we will have a steady, cold rain with temperatures struggling to get to the mid 40s after being in the low 30s early in the morning. A low-pressure area will be developing again over the NW Gulf of Mexico pulling moist air northward into Alabama. There is a chance that cold air will hang on long enough to permit a mix of a little light snow mixed in with the rain over the extreme north. Could even be a few spots of light freezing rain around daybreak—mainly on bridges and overpasses. Saturday will be our wettest day and some parts of the state should get around 1 inch of rain.

WHEN WILL WE WARM UP: That will start on Sunday when it gets up to about 56 in the afternoon with occasional rain. Monday will be a lot warmer with the old thermometer soaring well into the 60s. There will be a chance of showers on Monday and even a chance of a thunderstorm. Another fast-moving cold front will jerk our temperatures back to reality on Tuesday with highs only in the 50s, but there will be a good chance of rain lingering into Tuesday.

ACROSS THE GREAT USA: It is an amazing weather picture across the country, especially this early in the winter. Snow surveys early today, both by measurements and satellite, showed that about 54% of the lower 48 have a snow cover. It was only 3% a month ago. The blizzard that moved out of the west and out of the Rockies several days ago was a historic storm. A solid snow blanket now covers much of the Northern Plains and Midwest. A serious situation in Northern Arizona where dozens of elk hunters are stranded in the deep snowdrifts. This is mainly in Coconino County which encompasses Flagstaff…cold temperatures this morning included 27 below zero at Big Piney, Wyoming, 19 below at the Grand Canyon and 18 below at Northway, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure glad to report that Little Miss Molly is snapping back fast. It was evident yesterday when she saw Dino go by and almost had a nervous breakdown wanting to go out and play. Late last night she even petitioned me for a ballgame. I obeyed, but I limited it to one inning. On our walk this morning, she was completely normal, sniffing a zillion leaves and occasionally leaving a few drops at selected places. Life goes on.

...Cold Air Returns To Alabama...

A CHILLY DECEMBER DAY: Yesterday's official daytime high in Birmingham was 63 degrees; we figure temperatures today will be about 20 degrees colder as Polar air drops into Alabama, coming the vast snow pack to the north. Tonight promises to be one of the coldest nights so far this season; we are projecting a low of 25 degrees, but some of the colder spots across North Alabama will be closer to 20, maybe even reaching the upper teens. During the day tomorrow our weather stays dry, but clouds will increase and temperatures will stay cold, with a high in the mid 40s.

WET WEEKEND: Yet another impulse in the southern branch of the jet stream will bring rain to Alabama as the weekend begins. A cold rain will begin tomorrow night, and we have some concern there could be a window for some freezing rain during the early morning hours Saturday. Freezing rain is simply liquid precipitation that falls when surface temperatures are at or below 32 degrees, this in turn produces ice on exposed surfaces. While we don't expect a serious problem for now, just be aware there could be a little light bridge icing early Saturday morning, especially north of Birmingham.

The rest of the weekend will be wet with periods of rain Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be a raw, cold, and wet day with a high only in the 40s, but we should reach the 50s Sunday as a southerly flow takes over. Rain totals over the weekend should be in the one-half to one inch range, and we don't expect any problems with severe weather this time.

NEXT WEEK: We will have a brief break from the rain on Monday, but the next system promises to bring another round of rain to the state by Tuesday and Tuesday night. Colder air follows on Wednesday and Thursday.

DIGGING OUT: Wisconsin declared a state of emergency yesterday, shut down government offices and also activated the National Guard after the epic storm system dumped up to 17 inches of snow across the state. The state of Iowa was also pretty much shut down, at times visibility was near zero yesterday morning with blowing snow and sub-zero wind chill index readings. Snow plows were pulled off the roads for part of the day because visibility was so poor and the storm was so bad that they weren't making much of a difference. Even the military Humvees were having trouble, and large truck drivers were also getting stuck in the snow. A man who was found behind the post office in Yale, Iowa died en route to hospital. He had been there for at least a couple hours.

ACROSS THE FROZEN TUNDRA: Coldest place in the nation yesterday was the community of Sixth Crossing, Wyoming with 37 degrees below zero. That is considerably colder than Alaska's coldest temperature of 14 below, recorded at Northway. Fargo, North Dakota never saw zero yesterday; their high was -2.

...Staying On The Cool Side...

KEEP YOUR COATS HANDY: We are going through a period for the next four days where we will not have much mild weather. It will be at least sweater weather and maybe some heavier coats, especially during the early mornings. We expect upper 20s by daybreak tomorrow with lows in the mid 20s by Friday morning, near freezing Saturday morning, but closer to 40 by Sunday morning. High temperatures will be in the mid 40s, but warming a bit to the mid 50s by Sunday.

OUR NEXT RAIN: We simply do no need another drop of rain. We could do without a single drop for the rest of this year and still be in real good shape. However, we expect a cold rain to start Friday night and continue off and on Saturday. This will not be a heavy rain event like we experienced yesterday. The total for the rest of the week may be ½ to 2/3 of an inch. Here are a few rain totals from the storms yesterday and last night:

5.06 Millport

7.12 Hartselle

6.47 Double Springs

6.44 Addison

1.65 Clay/Pinson (Womack Road)

1.00 Roebuck

Flash flooding became a real problem last evening and overnight. Some of the worst flash flooding seemed to be in Hartselle and other parts of the Tennessee Valley. At one time, water was up to the hoods of the automobiles in South Lamar County.

Not only was flooding a problem, but high winds became a problem. We do not have reports of a confirmed significant tornado, but there were numerous trees that came down, along with power lines, as strong winds due to a deep low-pressure area gusted around 50 mph frequently. It is most likely atop some of the ridges in North and Central Alabama that gusts reached between 60 and 70.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: According to the morning USA Snow Survey, an amazing 56% of the lower 48 has a snow cover. That is unusual even for mid-winter. A month ago today, only 3% had snow…blizzard conditions raged across the SW, the Rockies, the Plains and into the Midwest during the last few days. The intense low has moved into the NE today and most of the blizzard problems are in places like Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa…16 inches of new snow at French Island, Wisconsin, 31 inches at Pagosa Springs, Colorado…how would you like to be on Monarch Pass in Colorado where it was 9 below zero with west winds gusting to 62 mph and a wind chill or 46 below…Berthoud Pass was reporting gusts to 69 mph…looking at the mean old thermometer, it was 34 below zero this morning at Fairfield, Utah and 38 below south of Tensheep, Wyoming. What a name…it was 14 below at Northway, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We greatly appreciate the outpouring of concern from our readers about Little Miss Molly being sick yesterday. I will answer all of those e-mails. They made us feel good. Little Miss Molly seems to be on the mend, although still rather lethargic and quiet and getting a lot of sleep. She also takes sun baths every morning by our front door where the sun comes through the window. She will move with the sun. About 2:00 this afternoon, there was a sudden outburst from her because little Dino was passing by on the walking track. That is the best signal yet that she is getting better. Cannot do without her for sure. Life goes on.

...Much Colder Air Arrives Tomorrow...

A CALMER DAY: Following a round of heavy rain and strong to severe thunderstorms last night, our weather today will be much calmer as a slot of dry air works into the state from the west. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny, with temperatures reaching the low 60s during the midday hours. A gusty west wind of 10 to 20 mph will continue throughout the day.

A SHARP CHANGE TO COLDER: A blast of cold air, coming across the vast snow pack over the Midwest U.S., will arrive in Alabama tonight. We are projecting temperatures to be down in the upper 20s at daybreak tomorrow, followed by a high only in the mid 40s tomorrow afternoon. Mid 20s are possible by daybreak Friday as the cold air continues to settle into the state.

OUR NEXT RAIN: The next impulse moving through the strong southern branch of the jet stream will push rain into Alabama Friday afternoon and Friday night. It will be a cold rain, and parts of the state will be flirting with 32 degrees late Friday night. But for now we don't expect any icing problems, just rain. And, the rain will continue into at least a part of the day Saturday.

OUR WEEKEND: Saturday looks raw, cold, and wet with periods of rain. Temperatures won't get out of the mid 40s with low clouds holding in place all day. Sunday promises to be brighter and a little warmer with a high in the mid 50s.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: While the weather looks dry on Monday, yet another wave in the southern jet stream will bring another chance of rain to Alabama Tuesday, followed by more cold air Wednesday. The general pattern looks cold and unsettled for much of the nation through the rest of December.

BIG TIME WINTER STORM: Much of the nation is buried under a big snow pack in the general area from Denver to Milwaukee. A foot or more of snow was expected in parts of Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph was expected to create snow drifts of 8 to 15 feet. In Oklahoma, Interstate 40 was closed for about 25 miles between Clinton and Elk City due a layer of ice, which also extended back into the Texas Panhandle around Amarillo.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24 hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...A Stormy Time...

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT TONIGHT: I have been in weather a few years (a big few) and I do not believe I have ever seen so many counties in the USA under winter storm threats--all the way from the Rocky Mountain West to New England. More about that later, but now I need to focus my thoughts on Alabama where we will have a severe weather threat late today and tonight. The Storm Prediction Center has all of the state under a Slight Risk.

The threat has become a little more serious as things evolved today. This includes the possibility of some tornadoes. It appears that the better chance of that would be over about the south half of the state. However, it is an evolving story, so we must watch everything closely.

A very complex low-pressure system over the SW will grow even stronger and move steadily toward the NE. By daybreak tomorrow, it should be centered near Chicago. It will be pulling a cold front eastward, which will move into our state early tomorrow, possibly even late tonight. Here is how we believe things will shake out for Alabama:

Windy tonight, in fact some gusts over 30 mph at times. Thunderstorms will become numerous at times with locally heavy rain and some of those storms may become severe. The thunderstorms will end early Wednesday followed by clearing and we look for much colder weather Wednesday night. Thursday will probably be our prettiest day with mostly sunshine, but sharply colder. Highs will struggle to get out of the mid 40s with early morning lows in the upper 20s. Even colder Friday morning with lows in the mid 20s. More clouds will be moving in during the day and a cold rain will arrive either late in the day or Friday night.

Saturday looks to be one of those days that the Chamber of Commerce does not brag about. Rain may become widespread with highs only in the upper 40s.

HOW MUCH RAIN FROM ALL THIS MESS: Somewhere between 1 and 2 inches in the storms tonight and about another 1 inch on Saturday. This will continue to swell our rain total for the year, which is already at 67.33 inches, almost a 17-inch surplus.

BIG WEATHER EVENTS: Every single county in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire is under various winter weather advisories and warnings. A lot of those warnings are for raging blizzards. I do not remember seeing that before. The National Weather Service in Des Moines is calling this an epic winter storm. Extremely high winds gusting to 50 or 70 mph with tons of snow will create huge drifts. In Iowa, the drifts may reach 15 to 18 feet and that is fairly typical from where the storm came out of the West. 52 inches of snow at Wolf Creek Pass, Colorado. Flagstaff, in Northern Arizona, got 20 inches of new snow and up to 4 feet in the mountains of Southern Utah…cold temperatures this morning included 33 below zero in Havre, Montana, 8 below at Northway, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We have had Molly over 7 years and she has never been sick until last night when she was sick all night. We were so concerned that we headed to see her vet at the Argo Animal Clinic this morning and we are glad we did. It seems to be a respiratory problem and she had the early signs of pneumonia. She upchucked about 8 times during the night and the vet said it was coming from her lungs. She seems to be feeling some better this afternoon. We cannot stand to see her not being her old self. Life goes on—much more enjoyable when Little Miss Molly is herself.

...Severe Storms Possible Tonight...

ACTIVE WEATHER: A vigorous storm system will lift out of the Southwest U.S. today, bringing a wide variety of inclement weather to the continental U.S. during the next 48 hours. To the north, a major early season snow storm will blanket the nation in the general region from Denver to Chicago; winter storm warnings are up for these states. Here across the Southern U.S., we will deal with the warm sector issues, including the possibility of severe thunderstorms.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Winds will increase out of the south today, gusting to 25 mph at times, and potential for gusts to 35 mph on the ridges. Periods of rain are likely, and maybe even a few thunderstorms by late afternoon. As the main system approaches tonight, there will be a window for strong to severe thunderstorms, especially for the southern two-thirds of the state. The greatest risk of severe thunderstorms will come from about 7:00 tonight through 3:00 a.m. tomorrow, with the highest probabilities along and south of U.S. 278, or south of a line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden. Forecast wind profiles suggest that few isolated tornadoes are possible, in addition to storms with damaging straight line winds. Like most cold season severe weather threats, the biggest limiting factor is the degree of instability, or the ability of air parcels to rise freely through the atmosphere. We recommend that you be near a good source of weather information tonight in the event that watches and warnings are needed.

In addition to the threat of severe weather, the rain could be heavy at times. We are projecting rain totals of 1 to 2 inches statewide, with isolated amounts over two and a half inches. For now we don't expect any serious flooding issues.

REST OF THE WEEK: The rain will end early tomorrow, and the sky will become partly sunny with a high in the low to mid 60s. Then, sharply colder air will invade Alabama tomorrow night, and Thursday will be cold and dry with a high only in the mid 40s. Clouds return Friday, and for now it looks like a cold rain will fall on Alabama Friday night into Saturday. Temperatures could be cold enough to support some sleet or freezing rain Friday night, but for now we will just mention nothing frozen in our forecast. We will get tonight's system out of here and be able to deal with that end of the week system with more clarity tomorrow.

OUR WEEKEND: Saturday looks like a raw day, with cold and wet weather along with daytime temperatures in the 40s, but Sunday should be drier with returning sunshine and a high in the low 50s.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Flagstaff, Arizona was under a blizzard warning last night; their snow total by this morning was expected to be in the 18 to 24 inch range. The big snow storm will impact cities like Denver, Omaha, Des Moines, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Detroit during the next 24 hours; all of these cities are under winter storm warnings.

...December Rolls Along...

HEADED FOR WET WEATHER: We had some cold temperatures over the weekend. The old thermometer dropped as low as the upper teens in some of the valleys of NE Alabama. Quite a bit of sunshine Sunday, but now we are headed for some more foul weather. Remember, this is December and the weather never stays the same for very long. We expect some rain to reach Central Alabama, mainly after midnight. Widespread rain for tomorrow. Mixed in with that will be a few strong to severe thunderstorms late Tuesday or Tuesday night. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has posted a Slight Risk for tomorrow and tomorrow night for most of Louisiana and all but the extreme north sections of both Mississippi and Alabama. Probably the better chance will be late in the day and Tuesday night. We will watch that closely and we can zero in on the time window better by tomorrow morning.

Another fast-moving cold front will sweep across the area late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. NW winds will be up to 25 mph at times and highs will be in the upper 50s. Could be a little leftover light rain early. Thursday will probably be our nicest day this week with partly sunny weather and highs in the 40s. We will see some more rain late Friday and Saturday.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS: Lots of folks like to go up there in the winter and especially as the Christmas holidays approach. Rain will become widespread by tomorrow afternoon and lingering into Wednesday morning. Mostly sunny and colder weather is expected Thursday and Friday. By Friday morning, the average low will be about 25 with 15 in the high country. By the way, yesterday morning the temperature dropped to 9 above zero on Mt. LeConte with 3 inches of snow on the ground.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: Blizzard warnings for Northern Arizona including Flagstaff until noon tomorrow. SW winds as high as 60 mph will create huge drifts. They are expecting 12 to 28 inches of snow…the morning snow survey showed 42% of the lower 48 states with a snow cover. That is a big increase recently, because one month ago today only 3% was covered…a lot of snow expected over the NW USA also…the cold spot this morning was Big Piney, Wyoming with 23 below zero…coldest in Alaska was 8 below at Arctic Village…the north coast of Alaska is in their long winter night with no sun…Barrow has received 23 inches of snow so far…closer to home, Birmingham Airport has received 67.32 inches of rain this year—an amazing surplus of 17 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has an IQ that goes up 1 or 2 points per day. She has now learned how to give herself a belly rub by dragging herself all the way across the living area carpet, pulling herself with her front paws. That lets her belly get rubbed by the carpet. She has also developed some other habits. She insists on stopping on her walk and meticulously sniffing certain tiny leaves or pieces of straw. This morning she smelled every inch of a little straw that was a foot long and finally left a few drops. She may want to be a puppy hydrologist. She stopped at three houses and cried a bit. She knows that people who live there love her. Life goes on.

...Rain Returning...

An active weather pattern will continue across Alabama and the Deep South for the next 48 hours as a trough over the western states shifts eastward. It looks like much of Central Alabama will pick up around two or more inches of rain by Wednesday morning. There could also be some strong storms Tuesday night. Let's sort out the details.

SHOWERS TODAY: It will be cloudy and cool today with highs in the lower 50s. A few showers will be a good bet as an upper trough passes to our north and a front approaches from the west. Rainfall amounts will be generally light with this first system. Moisture levels will be on the rise tonight and rain will be building to the west of Alabama as the second stronger system gets organized.

STRONG STORMS: Rain will become likely on Tuesday as low pressure intensifies rapidly over the Texas Panhandle and gets ready to move northeast. The strong pressure gradient will lead to increasing winds Tuesday. Rain could become heavy Tuesday afternoon and night. In fact, there could be enough instability for some strong or possibly even severe storms late Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: The front will pass through early Wednesday, leaving a blustery day in its wake with mostly cloudy skies and perhaps a few light showers. Cooler air will be ushered in on the back of strong westerly and northwesterly winds. Temperatures will fall into the 40s during the afternoon and readings will be close to freezing by Thursday morning. Thursday looks partly cloudy and cool, with temperatures possibly remaining in the 40s during the day. Lows will be near freezing Thursday night. Moisture will increase rapidly early Friday, and with the cold temperatures, it could lead to a close call in the wintry precipitation department Friday morning (most likely sleet.) Rain will increase during the day on Friday and temperatures will quickly rise above freezing, alleviating any problems that might occur early.

WEATHERBRAINS: A great lineup of guests over the rest of the month on the podcast that's all about weather. Tonight, Gary England, the legendary Oklahoma City television meteorologist talks about his career and his battles with News Directors and the National Weather Service. Dog Trainer Yolanta Benal also makes a cameo appearance talking about dogs and thunderstorms. Next week, it's our winter storm preparedness show with Patrick Spoden from the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky. He will recount the January ice storm that crippled much of Kentucky and talk about lessons learned. Did you know that the staff of the National Weather Service in Anchorage puts on a daily weather show on Alaskan Public Television? Our very own Todd Foisy is one of the presenters and will also talk about it on the 14th. Another bombshell guest should be confirmed on the 21st along with the famous Joe Bastardi on the 28th. Follow our tweets about the show: we are @weatherbrains at Twitter.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Fog reduced visibility on I-65 near the Tennessee River in North Alabama during the early morning hours on a Saturday. A tractor trailer jackknifed, leading to a chain reaction accident that involved 18 vehicles. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.

...Rain Set To Return...

We had expected a good bit of high cloudiness across Alabama today, but clouds have been thicker than we anticipated. This has led to less sunshine than we might have hoped. This has held back temperatures, with noon readings still in the 40s across Central Alabama. A few spots may make 50 degrees today, but that is looking less and less doubtful. Winds are light.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: In the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, we find a trough over the western two thirds of the country. Alabama and the Southeast is under a deep southwesterly flow. As the trough moves east this week, it will be or next weathermaker, with two disturbances giving us rain chances over the next 72 hours.

DISTURBANCE ONE: As disturbance number one swings into Missouri tonight, accompanied by a surface low, showers will lift start lifting through Louisiana and Mississippi. We will be mostly cloudy overnight, with lows in the upper 30s on average. Showers will begin moving into the state late tonight. You could see a shower as you head to work or school. Showers will be mostly likely through the morning, but are possible through the afternoon. The front will settle to our south Monday night.

DISTURBANCE TWO: By Tuesday morning, the front will be coming back to the north in response to developing low pressure over Louisiana. This low will spread more rain into Alabama during the day. Meanwhile, a much stronger low will move out of the Rockies into the Plains states. As this low move northeastward into Illinois Tuesday night, a cold front will push into Alabama from the northwest, bringing along with it a line of storms, some of which could be strong. Rainfall amounts will average two inches through Wednesday morning. Blustery and cooler weather for Wednesday. Thursday looks partly cloudy and cool. Rain returns late on Friday.

WEATHERBRAINS: Have a question for weather legend Gary England? Email it to us at email@weatherbrains.com. We will also have tips for dog owners whose pets don't like storms from dog trainer Jolanta Benal. Listen to the show at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains and you could win a Christmas present for your favorite young weatherfan. We will be giving away a copy of Eric Pinder's new children's book: A Cat in the Clouds.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Ignoring the calendar, which said that the North Atlantic Hurricane Season was officially over, Tropical Storm Odette formed in the western Caribbean Sea. The fifteenth named storm of the season, Odette was the first December Atlantic tropical storm since Tropical Storm Lili in 1984 and the first December named storm ever in the Caribbean. A year later, Odette would become a subtropical storm in late November and last into early December. 2005 saw Epsilon form on November 29th and last into December, becoming the post official season hurricane since Lili. That same year, Tropical Storm Zeta formed on December 29th and lasted into 2006. There were no December tropical storms in '06, but Olga formed in December 2007. 2008 was free of December storms. Will we have one this year. It looks doubtful.

...Brrrr!...

This morning will be the coldest morning since March 3rd of this year, when the mercury reached 20F at the Birmingham Airport. By the time all the observations are logged, lows should average 24F or so across Central Alabama. Colder spots will likely bottom out in the lower 20s.

RAIN TO RETURN: An active weather pattern will continue for the next ten days across Alabama and the Deep South. For today, high clouds will be spreading across the area from a developing storm system to our west. Temperatures this afternoon will climb into the lower to middle 50s. Clouds will lower and thicken this evening, becoming cloudy before midnight. Showers will be possible by Monday morning as an upper level disturbance ejects from the western system and passes to our north, weakening as it goes. Expect about a third of an inch of rain from the first system.

STRONGER STORM SYSTEM: By Tuesday, moisture will be concentrating to our west as low pressure forms over the Plains states. This low will become quite intense as it moves toward the Midwest. By Tuesday night, it will be over Missouri and showers and storms will be in progress across Alabama. In fact, showers could arrive as early as Tuesday morning. We could see a couple of inches from this system onTuesday. And with the low tracking further to the north, there is a chance we could see some strong storms, especially Tuesday night. It will become quite windy as well.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: Blustery on Wednesday and turning colder. May not get out of the 40s on Thursday with widespread freezes both Thursday and Friday morning. Rain returns Friday night and Saturday. At least one more inch of rain.

WEATHERBRAINS: He was the first television meteorologist to bring Doppler radar based tornado warnings to the public He appeared in the movie Twister. He is considered the top rated meteorologist in the state of Oklahoma. He has won numerous awards, including two Emmys. Monday night, it will be an honor to have the Director of Meteorology for KWTV in Oklahoma City, Gary England, on WeatherBrains. Keep up with the show all week on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: New York city and much of the Northeast was engulfed in a major winter storm that was dumping heavy snows over a wide area. In the Big Apple, it was the biggest early season snow on record. Central Park picked up fourteen inches of snow, while up to twenty four inches fell in Bronx County at Riverdale. Temperatures in the twenties and winds of up to thirty five mph prompted blizzard warnings. The Boston area even harder hit with up to thirty inches of snow reported at Peabody, just north of the city during the two day storm. The big winner in the snow Olympics was Pinkham Notch, NH, where a whopping fifty two inches was measured. The huge nor'easter responsible for the adverse weather deepened as it moved slowly along the coast, reached a minimum central pressure of 988 mb.
