...Rain Set To Return...

We had expected a good bit of high cloudiness across Alabama today, but clouds have been thicker than we anticipated. This has led to less sunshine than we might have hoped. This has held back temperatures, with noon readings still in the 40s across Central Alabama. A few spots may make 50 degrees today, but that is looking less and less doubtful. Winds are light.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: In the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, we find a trough over the western two thirds of the country. Alabama and the Southeast is under a deep southwesterly flow. As the trough moves east this week, it will be or next weathermaker, with two disturbances giving us rain chances over the next 72 hours.

DISTURBANCE ONE: As disturbance number one swings into Missouri tonight, accompanied by a surface low, showers will lift start lifting through Louisiana and Mississippi. We will be mostly cloudy overnight, with lows in the upper 30s on average. Showers will begin moving into the state late tonight. You could see a shower as you head to work or school. Showers will be mostly likely through the morning, but are possible through the afternoon. The front will settle to our south Monday night.

DISTURBANCE TWO: By Tuesday morning, the front will be coming back to the north in response to developing low pressure over Louisiana. This low will spread more rain into Alabama during the day. Meanwhile, a much stronger low will move out of the Rockies into the Plains states. As this low move northeastward into Illinois Tuesday night, a cold front will push into Alabama from the northwest, bringing along with it a line of storms, some of which could be strong. Rainfall amounts will average two inches through Wednesday morning. Blustery and cooler weather for Wednesday. Thursday looks partly cloudy and cool. Rain returns late on Friday.

WEATHERBRAINS: Have a question for weather legend Gary England? Email it to us at email@weatherbrains.com. We will also have tips for dog owners whose pets don't like storms from dog trainer Jolanta Benal. Listen to the show at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains and you could win a Christmas present for your favorite young weatherfan. We will be giving away a copy of Eric Pinder's new children's book: A Cat in the Clouds.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Ignoring the calendar, which said that the North Atlantic Hurricane Season was officially over, Tropical Storm Odette formed in the western Caribbean Sea. The fifteenth named storm of the season, Odette was the first December Atlantic tropical storm since Tropical Storm Lili in 1984 and the first December named storm ever in the Caribbean. A year later, Odette would become a subtropical storm in late November and last into early December. 2005 saw Epsilon form on November 29th and last into December, becoming the post official season hurricane since Lili. That same year, Tropical Storm Zeta formed on December 29th and lasted into 2006. There were no December tropical storms in '06, but Olga formed in December 2007. 2008 was free of December storms. Will we have one this year. It looks doubtful.
