...Much Colder Air Arrives Tomorrow...

A CALMER DAY: Following a round of heavy rain and strong to severe thunderstorms last night, our weather today will be much calmer as a slot of dry air works into the state from the west. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny, with temperatures reaching the low 60s during the midday hours. A gusty west wind of 10 to 20 mph will continue throughout the day.

A SHARP CHANGE TO COLDER: A blast of cold air, coming across the vast snow pack over the Midwest U.S., will arrive in Alabama tonight. We are projecting temperatures to be down in the upper 20s at daybreak tomorrow, followed by a high only in the mid 40s tomorrow afternoon. Mid 20s are possible by daybreak Friday as the cold air continues to settle into the state.

OUR NEXT RAIN: The next impulse moving through the strong southern branch of the jet stream will push rain into Alabama Friday afternoon and Friday night. It will be a cold rain, and parts of the state will be flirting with 32 degrees late Friday night. But for now we don't expect any icing problems, just rain. And, the rain will continue into at least a part of the day Saturday.

OUR WEEKEND: Saturday looks raw, cold, and wet with periods of rain. Temperatures won't get out of the mid 40s with low clouds holding in place all day. Sunday promises to be brighter and a little warmer with a high in the mid 50s.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: While the weather looks dry on Monday, yet another wave in the southern jet stream will bring another chance of rain to Alabama Tuesday, followed by more cold air Wednesday. The general pattern looks cold and unsettled for much of the nation through the rest of December.

BIG TIME WINTER STORM: Much of the nation is buried under a big snow pack in the general area from Denver to Milwaukee. A foot or more of snow was expected in parts of Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph was expected to create snow drifts of 8 to 15 feet. In Oklahoma, Interstate 40 was closed for about 25 miles between Clinton and Elk City due a layer of ice, which also extended back into the Texas Panhandle around Amarillo.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24 hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.
