...A Cold, Wet Start To The Weekend...

COLD AIR STAYS IN PLACE: We are projecting another cold, dry day for Alabama with a partly sunny sky and a high in the mid 40s following a significant morning freeze. Clouds will thicken tonight in advance of another system moving along in the southern branch of the jet stream, which promises to bring wet weather to our state as start the weekend.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: A cold rain will move up into Alabama tomorrow, and we will continue to monitor for any potential early morning precipitation that could fall in the form of freezing rain, which is liquid precipitation that falls when surface temperatures are 32 degrees or colder. The latest model data hints that most of the rain early tomorrow will be over the southern half of the state, then moving up into North Alabama by late morning when temperatures will be above freezing. Just keep in mind anything if any rain does develop early tomorrow, it could mean some scattered bridge icing. Periods of rain are likely through the day with temperatures struggling to reach the low 40s. Rain will continue at times tomorrow night into Sunday, with storm totals of around 1 inch likely. The rain will begin to taper off late in the day Sunday as the lead wave moves on to the east.

NEXT WEEK: The active weather pattern continues. Monday will be noticeably warmer as temperatures rise well into the 60s. There will be sufficient moisture to mention a chance of scattered showers Monday, but it won't rain all day and the sun might peek out a time or two. Then, another good rain event is likely on Tuesday with rain and thunderstorms likely. Colder and drier air will follow that rain on Wednesday and Thursday.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: A vast snow cover remains from the mountains of Arizona to the Great Lakes. Coldest spot in the nation was Big Piney, Wyoming with 28 degrees below zero. The high in Chicago was only 8 degrees. While less than three inches of snow fell on Buffalo, with winds gusting between 50 mph and 60 mph it was enough to blind drivers, ground flights and force most area schools to close. Frequent thunder and lightning lit up the sky. In Northern Arizona, 25 to 30 elk hunters remained stranded for a fourth day in below-freezing temperatures and searchers worried they were running low on food and heating fuel. The Coconino County sheriff's office said the hunters were trapped by the 2 to 3 feet of snow that fell Monday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: One of the century's worst nor'Easters strikes the Northeast. Hurricane force winds were recorded in several locations and record high tides flooded coastal areas. New York City picked up a wind gust to 93 mph. Flooding closed LaGuardia Airport and the entire subway system in New York was shutdown for 3 hours. The wind was sustained at over 60 mph for several hours at Boston MA. Over 32 inches of snow fell at Worcester MA, which was a record for a single storm there. 37 inches of snow fell at Stanford NY.
