...An Uncomfortable Weekend...
WET IS THE WORD: Not only wet, but a bone-chilling rain at that. There are a number of things that we need to watch closely. The onset of precipitation and what the temperature will be at that time is our main concern.
As it stands now, we look for a slight chance of light rain mixed with light sleet very late tonight and toward daybreak. The early daylight hours of Saturday will be the most questionable time. The rain may mix with light sleet or even some light freezing rain early in the day, but eventually to all rain later Saturday morning and afternoon.
There is another factor we need to consider. After some very cold temperatures last night and this morning, the infrastructure is already chilled, so it will not take very much light freezing rain to cause some slick spots. We do not really think it will be a major problem, but if you are out driving very early tomorrow, pay close attention to the temperature.
REST OF THE WEEKEND: Saturday will be a chilly, unpleasant day. A moderating trend will set in Sunday with early morning lows in the mid 40s and afternoon highs in the mid 50s. Temperatures will feel spring-like on Monday reaching the lower 70s, but do not take it for granted very long. There will be some showers on Monday and possibly even a thunderstorm. Those will linger through much of Tuesday morning and it will be turning sharply cooler. By Wednesday, Thursday and maybe even Friday mornings we will be back down into the low to mid 30s at night.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: The Annual SWAC Championship Game will be at Legion Field Saturday afternoon between Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M. Kick off is at 1:00 p.m. on national TV. Expect a cold rain, which may be steady at times. The temperature at kick off should be around 39 or 40 but slowly rising to about 42 to 45 as the game goes on.
THE 2010 HURRICANE SEASON: Yes, that is a long time ahead, but Dr. William Gray and his associates at Colorado State University realize that. However, they did issue a preliminary outlook and it indicates an enhanced season with 11-16 named storms, including 6 to 8 hurricanes and 3 to 5 major hurricanes. There is a chance of 1 major hurricane striking the U.S. mainland, about a 52% chance. There is a 40% chance of a hurricane moving ashore along the East Coast and from the Florida Peninsula westward to the south tip of Texas. The hurricane forecast for the season just ended was way off, so do not get too concerned yet.
ROAMING: Again this morning, 51% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover--less than 3% a month ago today. 21 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours at Herman in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Low temperatures this morning: 25 below at Big Piney, Wyoming and 20 below at Northway, Alaska. A very warm 89 in Miami yesterday. A nice note from Gary Petti who used to be the MIC at NWS in Birmingham and now retired north of Tampa. He says he has only turned the heat on twice in November and none so far in December.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I truly believe that Little Miss Molly is 90% back to normal. She is back to her old routine, which includes finding me in the house and glaring at me until I play ball. Often she will already assemble the balls where I can start throwing them easily. If I do not act fairly quickly, she goes to slinging the balls all over the living area and running berserk. I will catch up playing with her this weekend and we will take a number of walks. I need the exercise anyway. Life goes on. J. B. Elliott
