...Showers on the Way Out...

Greetings from Florida's Space Coast, where preparations are under way
for Space Shuttle mission STS-119, as the orbiter Discovery gets ready
to head to the International Space Station. I guess that I am a child
of the Space Age. I grew up, as many of you did, enthralled by the
Apollo missions. Spellbound by the fiery launches and glued to the
television set during dockings and reentries. One of my life goals
has been to watch a launch in person, and that may happen tomorrow
evening. At 7:43 p.m. EDT Sunday evening, the 125th shuttle mission
is scheduled to lift off from launch pad 39A at the Kennedy Space
Center. I will be on the beach watching.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS: Light to moderate rain was widespread across North
and Central Alabama overnight. Despite the extent of the rain,
amounts were not excessive. The only places that came close were
over West Central Alabama where Doppler radar estimates paint a three
inch picture between Columbus MS and Ethelsville. One and a half
inches or more may have fallen in an area over southern Lamar and
northern Pickens Counties. Other amounts through 11 a.m. included 0.76
at Birmingham, 0.77 at Tuscaloosa and 0.18 at Anniston. 1.76 fell at
Muscle Shoals. The rainfall for the year at BHM stood at exactly
normal at 11 a.m.

YOUR SATURDAY: A large, but weak surface low was crossing US-78 inn
Northwest Alabama at late morning, heading slowly northeast. It had
the requisite cold front in tow to its south. Ahead of the front,
some moderate to heavy showers were lined up and marching east and
southeastward. Ahead of the low, widespread light rain was
occurring. This feature is the player in our weather for today. Rain
will end from the west as the low and cold front pass your location.
Clouds are thick all the way back to eastern Oklahoma, and a few light
showers were showing up on radar over western Tennessee. It will
remain cloudy into the overnight. There will be a wide range in
temperatures today from around 50 in the east thanks to a bit of an
easterly wedge to lower 60s to the south.

TONIGHT AND BEYOND: The other player in our weather is a subtropical
high over the Bahamas. This feature is blocking the eastward and
southward progression of the cold air to the north. The southern
branch of the jetstream lies across the southern tier of states,
tapping moisture from the eastern Pacific. Disturbances in this flow
will continue to produce waves of rain along the frontal boundary that
will stall over South Alabama. As disturbances slide across in the
flow, waves of rain will spread back across the state. It could be
quite wet again overnight tonight and Sunday night in areas along and
south of the I-59 corridor. I am holding out that we may see a peek
of sun Sunday afternoon, but that may be a pipe dream. Sunshine
should be the rule from Monday right on through midweek. A weak front
will mean a slight chance of a shower on Thursday, but again, the risk
is small.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Dense fog caused a 125 vehicle pileup on I-75
in northern Georgia during morning rush hour. A truck crossed the
median and crashed into several vehicles. Thirty nine people were
injured and four people were killed in the chain reaction accident.
The accident site was about forty miles from the site of a Tennessee
fog-related chain reaction crash that happened in 1990 that killed
twelve people. Fog warning devices were installed after the 1990
crash.

...March Showers...

MARCH SHOWERS: A big lumbering surface low is moving out of
Mississippi and into Alabama on this last winter Saturday of 2009.
The low is moving along a wavy frontal boundary that separates cooler
air to the north from warm and moist tropical air to the south. Rains
were widespread overnight, although amounts were not excessive. As
the low passes, the frontal system will be nudged back to the south,
taking most of the rains into South Central Alabama later today. The
rain should taper off by early afternoon in the I-59 corridor,
although there could be a few showers into the overnight hours as
another wave of rain overspreads South Alabama. Highs today will be
in the middle 50s across the Tennessee Valley, lower 60s across the
I-20 corridor and lower 70s at Montgomery.

SALVAGEABLE SUNDAY? Rain will continue across South Alabama on
Sunday, continuing into Monday as a stronger upper disturbance pushes
into the state from the west, finally sweeping out the rain. Central
Alabama should experience mainly dry conditions tomorrow, although a
light shower is not out of the question. Highs will be seasonable, in
the middle 60s, after morning lows around 50. The day will start out
cloudy, but there could be a good bit of sun in the afternoon.

DRY WEEK AHEAD: Monday will be a pleasant day, with lots of sun and
highs topping out around 70 degrees. Expect similar conditions
Tuesday and Wednesday. By midweek, high pressure will build down the
East Coast into the Carolinas, and as it does, our winds will
increasingly come from the southeast. Showers may re-enter the
picture as a fairly toothless front zips by in the Thursday time frame.

SPRING BREAK FORECAST: Showers through Monday night along the Gulf
coast, with a few washout periods in store. But things will improve
quickly starting Tuesday. Highs will be in the 60s through the
weekend, edging back into the 70s for the remainder of the week. Gulf
temperatures are still a little chilly, in the upper 60s to lower
70s. If you're heading to see the Big Rat in Orlando, it looks fine.
80s through Monday, then a slight shower chance on Tuesday, and fine
70s the rest of the week. Heading west to ski? A few showers after
midweek, likely rain in the lower elevations, a mix in the ski
regions. Some of the Colorado resorts expecting 40s by day this week,
likely leading to some spring skiing conditions.

STORM OF THE CENTURY: On Sunday morning, March 14, 1993, Birmingham
was still buried under thirteen inches of snow. The thirteen inches
was a record for twenty four hours, a single storm, any month and is
the deepest snow cover on record here. Under crystal clear skies with
a deep blanket of snow that night, the mercury plummeted to a record
March reading of 2F. As the powerful storm system roared up the East
Coast, it wreaked havoc over a wide area. Hurricane force winds were
recorded at Boston. A foot of snow fell in the Megaopolis of the
Northeast. Over 200 people died and damage totaled $6 billion, making
it the costliest extratropical storm in history.

...Rain Will Be Increasing...

A WET 36 HOURS: Quite a variety of weather around Alabama this
afternoon. The cool front pushed all the way to the Gulf Coast and
stalled, but warm air was exerting its authority over the south part
of the state this afternoon. In fact, while it was near 80 in
Evergreen, it was only in the low 40s over the NW corner of the state.
Along that stalled front, a low-pressure area was developing over the
NW Gulf of Mexico. By daybreak Saturday, the low should be over
Central Mississippi and by late Saturday up in Tennessee. This is
going to give us extensive rain starting tonight and especially so
Saturday and Saturday evening. Some of that rain will last after
midnight Saturday night, but ending early Sunday morning. Another
disturbance might bring some more rain to South Alabama on Monday. We
think most of that will be south of the Birmingham area. Tuesday looks
like a model spring day with mostly sunshine and highs in the low to
mid 70s.

THE AMOUNT OF RAIN for Central Alabama could be close to 2 inches for
the next 36 hours. The North American model with had been advertising
2.50 inches for us has backed off to a total of 1.53 inches. So far
today, most of the rain has occurred over the northern third of the
state, mostly from Birmingham northward. Heavier amounts were over the
NW part of the state. Rain will be increasing tonight as the system
gets better organized and rain will be rather extensive on Saturday.
We do not foresee any unusually cold weather for at least the next
week. It is getting that time of year when a major cold air outbreak
will be an exception.

16 YEARS AGO TODAY the Blizzard of 93 was about over as the giant
storm moved toward the NE. Next morning the temperature was 2 above
zero at Birmingham Airport with about 13 inches of snow on the ground.
A lot of information about this great storm has been posted on the ABC
33/40 Weather BLOG.

GOING TO THE BEACH you will find mild weather continuing for the next
several days with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. They will have
a good chance of showers over the weekend, but thinning out greatly by
Tuesday.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE that when a tornado struck Great Bend, Kansas in
November 1915 that a farmstead was totally wiped out killing the two
persons who lived there. Amazingly, five horses became airborne and
were carried a distance of one-quarter mile. All of them were unhurt.

ROAMING AROUND NORTH AMERICA we find temperatures as low as 25 below
at Atqasuk, Alaska. In the lower 48, it was 14 below at Hibbing,
Minnesota. Warmest yesterday was 87 at Plymouth, White Springs and
Orange Springs—all in Florida.

MY TINY CORNER OF THEWORLD: She did it again. Little Miss Molly found
her way into the master bathroom yesterday and attacked the toilet
paper. She did that once when she was real young. I gave her a very
light spanking the first time and she slithered under the bed and
stayed for an hour. Chuck Biddinger later gave her two rolls of toilet
paper for her birthday and she would not touch it. Yesterday she had
shredded so much toilet paper that I could hardly step over it. There
were 3-inch drifts. I could not scold her because I do not know
exactly when she did it. I guess she was trying to have a flashback to
her childhood. Still love her and life goes on.

...A Good Soaking...

WET IS THE WORD: Beneficial rain is likely for much of Alabama during
the next 48 hours as a wave of low pressure moves along a stalled
front over Central Alabama. Periods of rain are likely today, with the
rain becoming more widespread tonight and tomorrow. A few
thunderstorms could be involved tomorrow, but severe thunderstorms are
not expected with a stable airmass in place. Flooding is not expected
to be an issue since the rain won't be extremely heavy at any one
given time. Many Alabama communities will see two inches of rain
between now and Sunday morning, with isolated amounts to three inches.

The rain should begin to move out of here Sunday morning, and some
clearing is possible by Sunday afternoon as drier air arrives. Next
week looks very nice, with mostly dry conditions and seasonal
temperatures. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the 70s, with early
morning lows in the 40s and 50s.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of questions about weather on the Gulf Coast in
coming days with a number of Alabama school kids in spring break next
week. For today, tomorrow, and Sunday, the sky will be mostly cloudy
with a good chance of showers and a few thunderstorms. Afternoon highs
will be in the 65 to 70 degree range, and the sea water temperatures
along the Central Gulf Coast are running in the mid 60s. A few showers
will remain possible on Monday, but the rest of the week looks dry. On
the immediate coast, highs will remain in the upper 60s due to the
influence of the cooler ocean water, but temperatures inland will
reach the 70s.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS: If you are headed to Gatlinburg, expect a
soaking, chilly rain today, tomorrow and Sunday with afternoon highs
in the 45 to 50 degree range. A few lingering showers are possible
Monday, but Tuesday and Wednesday will be dry with highs in the 50s. A
few scattered showers could return by Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1993: The great Blizzard of 93 was winding down across
Alabama, but the storm was still raging up the Atlantic coast.
Birmingham's official snow total was 13 inches… tremendous snowfall
amounts occurred in the Appalachians. Mount Leconte in Tennessee
recorded an incredible 60 inches. Mount Mitchell in North Carolina was
not far behind with 50 inches. Practically every official weather
station in West Virginia set a new 24 hour record snowfall. Further to
the north, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania measured 25 inches, Albany, New
York checked in with 27 inches, and Syracuse, New York was buried
under 43 inches. Boston recorded a gust to 81 mph, the highest wind
gust at the location since hurricane Edna in 1954. Numerous cities in
the south and mid Atlantic states recorded their lowest barometric
pressure ever as the storm bottomed out at 960 millibars (28.35
inches) over Chesapeake Bay. 208 people were killed by the storm and
total damage was estimated at 6 billion dollars -- the costliest
extratropical storm in history.

...A General Soaking For Alabama...

A GOOD CHANCE OF WIDESPREAD RAIN: We will soon be getting into the
growing season across Alabama. Winter and early spring rains are
always welcome to get the topsoil in great shape for spring planting
and growth. We should get that in the next three days and some of the
rain amounts will be locally heavy. One of our weather models, called
the NAM, is hinting for 2.35 inches in the Birmingham area by late
Sunday. That seems quite reasonable and some places may get more than
that.

HERE IS WHY WE ARE GETTING THE RAIN: The cool front that pushed into
Alabama yesterday stalled down in extreme South Alabama near the
coast. In fact, it has hardly affected temperatures down south where
Dothan was reporting 80 early this afternoon while the NW corner of
the state had 39. A low-pressure area was developing along that
stalled front off the Texas coast this afternoon. That low will move
east and will be causing widespread rain from East Texas all the way
across Alabama. By Saturday morning, the main low will be over South
Mississippi. The sequence of events for Central Alabama calls for
intermittent light rain tonight. The rain becomes steadier tomorrow.
Our heaviest rain will most likely come Saturday and Saturday night
when showers will be numerous at times and possibly a thunderstorm
thrown in. Even on Sunday, the rain will be steady at times, but
Monday should bring a decrease in the amount and how widespread it is.
For the next several nights, our low temperatures should be in the 40s
and over the weekend our highs should be in the low 60s.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Afternoons will stay warm with highs between 68
and 72. Showers will begin increasing Friday afternoon and become
numerous at times Saturday, Saturday night and Sunday. Not much
sunshine.

THE BLIZZARD OF 93: This is the 16th anniversary of the Blizzard of
93 that brought devastating problems to Alabama. The worst of the
weather came late in the night on March 12 and especially after
midnight when thunder snow was involved and the lightning was an eerie
green. Record amounts of snow in many areas with very high wind
causing big drifts. Check out the ABC 33/40 Weather BLOG where James
has posted a lot of good information. Either late tonight or early
tomorrow morning, I will also post a long list of official snow
amounts from all around the state.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Some mid-winter type cold air over the Upper Midwest
sent the temperature to 35 below zero this morning at Embarrass and
Babbit in NE Minnesota. There is 25 inches of snow on the ground at
Babbit and 30 inches at International Falls, Minnesota. In Alaska, the
coldest was 17 below at Barter Island, but the wind chill at good old
Deadhorse was 46 below. The temperature was 33 below zero at Inuvik in
NW Canada with a wind chill of 48 below. Texas has been very dry for
the last several months, but in the last 24 hours Dallas/Ft. Worth was
drenched with 2.78 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This has been another one of those days
when I have had zero chances of playing ball with Little Miss Molly. She
knows that for sure and on all five trips through the living area to
get coffee today, she has given me a stern look. That makes me feel
guilty and she will get a big game this afternoon plus a lot of
loving. It is a routine over and over every single day, but I love it.
Life goes on.

...Wet Weekend Ahead...

RAIN CHANCES HEADED UP: While we won't see much rain around here
today, we do expect a good soaking tomorrow and into the weekend.
Today's rain should be light and spotty, and mainly along and north of
I-20. Totals today should be under a quarter of an inch, and many
places won't have enough rain to measure. The cooling trend will
continue; most places north of I-20 won't get out of the 50s, while
South Alabama could reach the 70s. The sky will be generally cloudy.

A GOOD SOAKING: Rain will begin to become more widespread across the
state tomorrow as moist air runs up and over the shallow layer of
cooler air near the surface. We will highlight periods of rain and a
few thunderstorms over the weekend as a wave of low pressure slowly
moves along the old front, that continues to just hang around here.
Three day rain totals (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) are forecast to
be in the 2 to 3 inch range over the northern half of the state, which
will surely knock out our rain deficiency for 2009 of 0.26". Severe
weather is not expected due to a stable airmass across the Deep South.
Model data suggests that the rain could linger into Monday of next
week, but by Tuesday most all of the rain will be east of Alabama, and
for now the rest of next week looks dry with seasonal temperatures.

AT THE BEACH: A few widely scattered showers are possible along the
Central Gulf Coast today, but most places will stay dry with a few
peeks of sunshine. Scattered showers and storms will be around
tomorrow and over the weekend, perhaps lasting into Monday. Then,
drier air returns Tuesday with a mostly sunny sky, and the rest of
next week should be dry in the general area from Panama City westward
to Gulf Shores. Along the immediate coast, afternoon highs will be in
the mid to upper 60s, with 70s inland. The sea water temperature at
the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 64.8 degrees (F).

SIXTEEN YEARS AGO TODAY: The "storm of the century" brought a
remarkable snow storm to Alabama. The storm has been described as the
most costly non-tropical storm ever to strike the USA doing an
estimated $6 billion in damage. The storm was as strong as a hurricane
in terms of winds and low pressure. The pressure dropped to an
incredible 28.35 inches mercury or 960 mb when then storm was located
over the Chesapeake Bay. I will never forget that Friday night; winds
gusted to hurricane force at our weather center atop Red Mountain, and
snow drifts were almost to the roof of the studio. The official snow
total for Birmingham was 13 inches, the largest snow event on record
for the city. But, some of the southern suburbs reported two feet of
snow. The city was paralyzed for three days, and the temperature
dropped to 2 degrees above zero on the following Sunday morning (March
14). Everybody that was around here at the time has a "blizzard story"
to tell. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime storm for Alabama.

...Thermometers Backing Down...

A WET PERIOD FOR ALABAMA: This time of year we often see quick and
significant changes in the weather because of the transition of a new
season. The old backyard thermometer has been working overtime to
register warm temperatures lately. In fact, it reached 84 yesterday
afternoon in Moundville and 83 in Montgomery. Today a change is
underway. A cold front pushed into NW Alabama before noon and was
pushing SE across the state this afternoon. This is not one of those
bitter changes to colder where you will have to dig out the heavy
coats, but by tomorrow, high temperatures will be some 25 degrees
lower than they were the last few days.

The weather is going to do a balancing act over the next few days and
this could complicate the forecast somewhat. To explain that, the
front will reach the Alabama coast by daybreak. It is expected to
stall very close to the Alabama/NW Florida coast and wait on a low-
pressure area to form along the front on the Central Texas coast. That
low will move to South Louisiana by nightfall tomorrow and will
continue moving generally eastward.

So, what does all this maneuvering mean for Alabama? It will almost
certainly spell periods of rain over the next several days. Some
scattered light rain should spread into Central Alabama tomorrow. The
rain will become more extensive Friday, Saturday and Sunday. One of
our models, the North American Model, suggests 2.54 inches of rain for
Birmingham by late Sunday. One of our other key models seems to think
we could get 3.00 inches by Sunday morning. In our forecast, we are
going to indicate over 1.50 inches between now and Sunday. We could
see some thunderstorms thrown into the mix by Saturday. We do not
think that conditions will be favourable for any severe weather. For
the next three nights, our low temperatures will be in the 40s and
highs will be in the 50s. Up in the Tennessee Valley we could have
some low temperatures between 35 and 40 tomorrow night.

AT THE BEACH: High temperatures mostly around 70 for the next several
days with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly Saturday
and Sunday. Some students are already taking Spring Break.

CONTRASTING WEATHER: Little Rock tied their record high yesterday
with 78 and now a Winter Storm Watch is posted for parts of Northern
Arkansas tonight and Thursday. It will involve freezing rain and
sleet. NWS in Little Rock says there could be up to ¼ inch ice
accumulation, but mainly on elevated objects, such as trees, power
lines and overpasses. This is nothing like their severe ice storm
several weeks ago.

A DRY START: The National Climatic Data Center reports that the first
two months of this year were the driest since such records began back
in 1895. This does not mean that everybody is dry, but they average
the two-month rain amounts from thousands of gauges all across the
country and came up with an average of 2.69 inches for the entire
eight weeks.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have been writing this little segment
for over 5 years and I bet I have received well over 100 e-mails from
people saddened by the loss of their pets. Most of the time I suggest
that they do not wait too long to get another dog. Stephanie Gossett
had to have their two great dogs, Abby and Baxter, put down two years
ago. They thought they were poisoned by anti-freeze, but they found
out later that the dogs died from faulty dog food. She only waited one
month before adopting a 45-pound red Siberian husky that she named
Sophie. She says that Sophie is still a joy and cracks her up every
day. Sophie does like Molly when she prepares a place to lay down by
scratching and then plops her 45 pounds down, which definitely wakes
you up. She takes a Sunday afternoon nap with her on the couch and she
gets more of the couch than Stephanie does. Glad that Stephanie is
enjoying her newer dog. I do not know what I would do if I lost Little
Miss Molly. I could kick myself for going many years without a dog
after we had bad luck with three. Life goes on.

...Cold Front Slips Into Alabama...

COOLING TREND AHEAD: After two days with an afternoon high of 80
degrees, we are looking at cooler weather in the days ahead thanks to
a cold front that will slip into North Alabama today. The cool-down
won't be extremely dramatic; just a gradual trend down for the ole
thermometer in coming days. Due to the front, we expect a few showers
around here today, but rain amounts should be rather light and spotty
due to limited dynamics. Rain totals through tonight should be mostly
under a quarter of an inch; some communities won't have enough rain to
measure. Afternoon temperatures will peak close to 70 today, but
temperatures will fall into the 50s over the Tennessee Valley of
extreme North Alabama as colder air slips into the state.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: Our front will become stationary tonight
somewhere just south of Birmingham. The front will then slowly drift
southward during the day tomorrow, allowing the cool air to move
south. Tomorrow looks like a mostly cloudy and cool with with a high
in the upper 50s. Some scattered light rain is possible, but much of
the day tomorrow will be rain-free. Friday, the front will try to inch
northward as a warm front, and we will forecast periods of rain with a
high in the mid to upper 50s.

WET WEEKEND: A wave of low pressure will move along the old front this
weekend, and will bring more rain to the state over the weekend.
Showers and a few thunderstorms are likely Saturday and Sunday, with
potential for 1 to 2 inches of rain statewide. At this point the
chance of severe weather looks relatively small due to limited
instability values.

NEXT WEEK: Confidence in a specific forecast is low next week due to
conflicting computer model output. The latest guidance hints that
Monday will be dry, but showers return on Tuesday with a rather strong
upper short wave. The latter half of the week looks dry at this time
with seasonal temperatures.

AT THE BEACH: Lots of folks on spring break next week. For the weekend
ahead, expect a few scattered showers and thunderstorms on Saturday
and Sunday on the Gulf Coast from Panama City westward to Gulf Shores.
Afternoon highs will be close to 70, but in the 65 to 68 degree range
on the immediate coast due to the cooler ocean (sea surface
temperatures are only in the low to mid 60s now). A few showers could
linger into the first part of next week, but the latter half of the
week looks rain-free.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the

...Colder Air Waiting In The Wings...

NO REAL WARM WEATHER FOR A WHILE: That is, after today. Temperatures
this afternoon across Alabama had climbed well into the 70s and some
folks will reach 80 before the day is over. Now our attention turns
toward the NW where a cold front was pushing SE through the Central
Plains. It will be helped along by an unusually strong high-pressure
system for this time of year. By late tomorrow, the high will be
centered over South Dakota. This is going to push the cold front into
extreme NW Alabama Wednesday morning and down into the extreme South
by Wednesday afternoon. We should also note that by that time, a low-
pressure area will be forming along the front over South Texas. This
will cause the front to stall along the Alabama/NW Florida coast by
Thursday morning. It will not move much Friday and Saturday as that
low moves east along the stalled front.

So, you ask, what does all this maneuvering mean? It means that we
will be at least 15 degrees cooler tomorrow and rather chilly for
Wednesday night through Saturday night and maybe longer. We think our
lowest temperature will be 40 to 42 across Central Alabama Thursday
morning and Friday morning.

THE RAIN SITUATION: By tomorrow morning, the 0.14 rain surplus for
Birmingham will be wiped out. Later in the day we should have a slight
chance of showers. In the cooler air, we expect intermittent light
rain to continue on Thursday and rain at times on Friday. Our better
chance of rain and the bigger amounts should be over the weekend on
Saturday and Sunday. Projections are that the two-day total should be
approaching 1 inch. We think that the risk of severe weather during
all this should be low.

WEATHER RADIO OFFER: ABC 33/40 continues to work with Publix
Supermarkets and Handy TV in this part of Alabama to get an excellent
Midland Weather Radio for an outstanding price of only $29.95. They
have the digital technology so you can choose your counties of choice
that you want to be alarmed for.

ROAMING THE GLOBE: I am impressed by the build up of more very cold
air over the great North Country. The temperature was as low as 49
below zero at Pelly Bay in Northern Canada this morning. Wind chill
warnings were out for as low as 60 below. The coldest in Alaska was 20
below at Ft. Yukon, where it once reached 100 degrees—the hottest ever
in Alaska. In the 48 adjacent states, it was 92 yesterday in Laredo
and 12 below zero this morning in Glasgow, Montana and Williston,
North Dakota. Oklahoma City had 82 yesterday, but they are looking for
29 tonight. Chicago is going to drop from 62 this afternoon to 22
tonight and 13 tomorrow night. As much as a foot of new snow will fall
over the Upper Midwest, such as NE Minnesota. 77 inches of snow on the
ground at Nome, Alaska. With the changing season, the coldest
temperatures in the world will shift to Antarctica. It was 73 below at
Vostok today and they expect 92 below within the next several days.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The biggest gripe I have about Little
Miss Molly is encroachment. She sleeps with us on a king-size bed and
when she curls up in a tightly wound circle to sleep, she takes up no
more room than a small Frisbee. On some nights, like last night, she
roams the bed switching locations. Every time she does that, she turns
around at least 5 times and plops down, shaking the bed. Last night
she kept pushing me closer and closer to the edge and I almost rolled
off. I still love her and sometimes I wake up in the middle of the
night and wake her up so I can give her a belly rub. Lots of moans and
groans. Life goes on.

...Headed for the 80s...

WARM AFTERNOON: If we reach our forecast high of 82 degrees today, it
will be the warmest day so far this year, and the warmest day since
October 15, 2008 when the high was also 82. After some early morning
clouds, the sky should become partly sunny today, and the chance of
rain is so small we won't mention it in the forecast.

TO THE NORTHWEST: We note some very cold air moving down into the
Northern Plains this morning; afternoon temperatures yesterday were
only in the single digits across parts of North Dakota and Montana,
and the leading edge of that air will set the stage for strong to
severe storms today across parts of the Midwest. That cold front will
ease into extreme North Alabama on Wednesday, and will bring a risk of
showers to the northern half of the state by Wednesday afternoon. With
the main upper support lifting northward into Canada, and the front
becoming parallel to the upper air winds, it should become nearly
stationary somewhere across North-Central Alabama by tomorrow night.
If anything, the front will drift southward on Thursday. That means
cooler weather for the northern counties of Alabama on Thursday and
Friday; highs will be in the 55 to 60 degree range, and some scattered
light rain is possible, although rain amounts should remain on the
light side. The sky will be mostly cloudy on Thursday and Friday.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A wave of low pressure moving along our stalled front
will bring a pretty decent rain event to Alabama over the weekend. For
now, it looks like much of the rain will fall Saturday afternoon,
Saturday night, and into Sunday morning. Thunderstorms could be
involved, but at the moment the chance of severe weather looks
relatively low.

NEXT WEEK: Expect a sharp change to colder weather early next week as
a long wave upper trough becomes established over the eastern U.S.;
even some hint at a few snow flakes on model runs for North Alabama
Sunday night and Monday morning. We sure won't mention that for now,
but just be aware that the first few days of next week could be rather
chilly. We should see a moderating trend toward the latter half of the
week, and for now the weather looks mostly dry. Next week is spring
break week for a number of school systems across Alabama. If you are
headed to the beach, we note that the sea water temperature at the
Alabama Gulf coast as of late yesterday afternoon was a cool 63 degrees!

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that
allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm sounds. Every
Alabama home and business needs one!

...Another Warm Spring Day Tuesday...

COOLER BY MIDWEEK: One week ago today there were some patches of snow
still on the ground in many parts of Alabama. Not so today as
temperatures soar well into the 70s and maybe to around 80 in some
places.

Tuesday will be a duplication of today except maybe a degree or so
warmer. It is expected to be dry tonight and Tuesday. Our changing
weather will start on Wednesday. By early in the day Wednesday, a cold
front should be pushing into NW Alabama. It is being pushed SE by a
rather strong high-pressure system over the Northern Plains. It will
set off some showers and possibly even a thunderstorm. Most of those
should be afternoon and night. Temperatures will be about 10 degrees
cooler. As the cooler air gets deeper into the area, highs on Thursday
and Friday will only be in the mid 50s and those at night in the 40s.
We still maintain a chance of rain at times Thursday and Friday. There
will be more clouds than sun the latter part of the week.
Sunday afternoon highs were in the mid and upper 70s in most areas. It
was 80 in Selma and 81 in Montgomery. Livingston had 82.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Powerful Category 4 Hamish may miss the Australian
mainland after all. The big storm was moving SE parallel to the east
coast. Some of the off shore islands, such as Sandy Cape and Lady
Elliot, may not be so lucky. Sustained winds have been over 170 mph at
times.

SEVERE WEATHER BOX SCORE: 2009 tornado fatalities in the USA still
stand at nine. This included 8 in Carter County, Oklahoma on February
10 and 1 in Hancock County, Georgia on February 19. Yesterday was an
active day with 22 tornadoes reported, 90 reports of wind damage and
23 reports of hail. Most of this was across Missouri, Illinois and
Indiana. Keep in mind those reports will be reduced after storm
inspections, because there may have been multiple reports of the same
storm. There was an injury at Red Bud, Illinois when hail shattered a
window in a home. I have never heard of a person being injured inside
of a home by hail. There is a slight risk of severe weather this
afternoon and evening from Central Texas to Southern Illinois.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: 10 below zero this morning at Cutbank, Montana
and 26 below at Arctic Village, Alaska. Coldest in North America was
35 below at Alert in extreme North Canada. An amazing 76 inches of
snow on the ground at Nome, Alaska and 53 inches at Valdez.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The countryside is coming alive. On a
long walk with my little pal this morning, there were so many birds
singing that it sounded like cheering in a football stadium. There was
one bird that followed us for at least ¼ mile running its big mouth
constantly. In my slightly active imagination, I assume the bird was
telling us to move along, that we were not welcome in the community.
The Bradford pear trees are blooming and soon the Old Crow Motel will
struggle back to life. Little Miss Molly sure enjoyed the walk. She
stopped and looked up at that chattering bird for several minutes. We
also met two worms. Life goes on.

...Showers Ahead...

A weather tug of war will highlight our forecast as we head through
the coming week. A strong subtropical ridge of high pressure will
continue to be anchored off the East Coast of Florida. This high
pressure system will keep the main weather zone to our northwest
through at least Tuesday.

DECENT START TO THE WEEK: A strong southerly flow around the high
pressure system continues over Alabama and the Deep South. We are
starting the day off with a good deal of clouds across Alabama, along
with some patchy fog over southern sections. The clouds will break up
gradually during the day, allowing for some sun. This will send
temperatures soaring again into the middle and upper 70s. Tomorrow
may actually feature more sunshine, and we could touch 80 degrees in
many locations.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: A strong upper level disturbance will pass
around the periphery of the high pressure ridge on Wednesday. As it
does, the frontal boundary will try to surge into here. There is
still a lot of conjecture as to how far south it will make it. It
looks reasonable that it could make it to south of Birmingham before
stalling. We should see showers and perhaps a few storms Wednesday,
followed by a bit of a break on Thursday, but more showers will arrive
on Friday. The rain will last into Saturday, and it looks like the
front may hang around into Sunday, with more showers again by then.

SPRING BREAK SNEAK PEEK: The beaches of Alabama/NW Florida will see
a couple of wet weather systems during the week of the 14th-22nd, as
will Gatlinburg. Orlando will see a warm start, but an extended
period of wet weather through much of the week. Washington DC looks
wet and cool. Heading west to ski? Mostly dry with one chance of a
big snow, around Monday the 16th.

MONTGOMERY'S JASMINE HILL GARDENS OPENS FOR SPRING: The beautiful
Jasmine Hill Gardens in Montgomery will open on March 13th so that the
public can enjoy a gorgeous display of spring color along with the
trademark Greek statuary. The Three Graces is a new stunning marble
copy of the goddesses from Greek Mythology. The twenty acre gardens
will be alive with beautiful tulips and bulbs mixed with winter
annuals and camellias that will be joined by azaleas, dogwoods,
wisteria, hydrangeas and other flowering trees and shrubs through the
month of March. Public tours will start this Friday and run through
Sunday May 17th. www.jasminhill.org.

ON THIS DATE IN 1960: Destructive cold temperatures occurred across
Alabama and Georgia. The cold affected fruit crops and most
vegetables. Low temperatures over these regions were in the single
digits in the north, low teens across central portions and mid to
upper teens in the south. These temperatures were cold enough to wipe
out any fruit crops that had reached the blooming stage. At 20
degrees even Peaches at the first pink stage of development will have
50% percent losses while at 15 degrees, as much as 90% losses are
likely. Most of the Alabama peach crop was destroyed that year by the
freeze.

...A Nice Sunday...

A good bit of clouds across Alabama on this Sunday as a deep southerly
flow continues around a dominant subtropical high located east of
Florida. This sprawling anticyclone is anchored in place, and as is
often the case, it will act as a shield over the southeastern United
States, keeping the stream of disturbances to our north. In the
battleground between the high and an upper trough over the western
United States, showers and storms will be the rule. This
meteorological tug or war will be the major player in our weather
forecast over the next seven days.

THROUGH TUESDAY: This same basic pattern will continue through
Tuesday across Alabama. A warm, relatively moist airmass is in place
with the strong southerly flow continuing and the boundary just to our
northwest with disturbances zipping along it. On Tuesday, a fairly
potent upper trough and surface low will move out of the Midwest, and
this will give the front a little southward momentum. But until then,
we will continue to see a mix of considerable clouds and some sunshine
this afternoon, Monday and Tuesday. Showers should be limited to
northwest sections today and generally the north half of the state
tomorrow and the next day. Highs will be warm, in the 70s. Overnight
lows will be in the 50s.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: The front will slowly edge towards Alabama on
Wednesday. This will generate increasing rain chances across the
area, especially Wednesday afternoon into the early morning hours on
Thursday. There could be some decent rainfall amounts with this
action. Timing the disturbances is difficult this far out, but
Thursday could be an in between day. Rain and storms should return on
Friday afternoon and night, with showers lasting into Saturday.
Cooler air may arrive Sunday.

MIDWEST ACTION: Severe weather is possible today across parts of the
Midwest down into the Arklatex ahead of an eastward surging cold
front. Areas from eastern Missouri through Kentucky and Illinois into
Ohio are outlooked for a severe threat this afternoon into this
evening. A few tornadoes are possible in the warm sector ahead of the
surface low that is moving toward Chicago. There were seven reports
of tornadoes on Saturday in the southern part of Kansas. In addition,
there were 53 reports of large hail and damaging winds. The threat
moves back to the Plains on Monday, across southern Kansas, Oklahoma
and northern Texas.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: The Milwaukee WI area got an early start on its
tornado season as a tornado formed right over the runway at the
General Mitchell
International Airport and moved northeast toward downtown.
Significant damage was reported, along with 16 injuries, but
fortunately, no fatalities.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Ice falling as it thawed from cables on New
York City suspension bridges caused nightmarish traffic jams as lanes
had to be closed on the five bridges. Falling shards of ice shattered
windshields and caused one injury, in addition to the inconvenience
for commuters.

...Welcome To Daylight Saving Time...

I hate losing that hour of sleep, and we Weather Humans bemoan the
fact that we get the model output an hour closer to forecast deadline
time, but I have to admit that I adore Daylight Saving Time. Note
that it is Daylight Saving Time, and not Daylight Savings Time as I am
naturally prone to call it. But don't forget to make sure that you
have set your clock ahead one hour this morning, or you will be late
for church or whatever appointment you have. Except of course, if
your church has two services, you might end up just being early for
the late service.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: If we were basing the criteria for a Perfect
Weather Warning solely on the afternoon high temperature, today would
qualify, much like yesterday. Highs today will be in the upper 70s
with a decent southerly wind. But sunshine today will be in short
supply, so we will hold off on issuing a warning for today. Still, I
think you will like the final results in the weather department,
despite the mostly cloudy conditions. On the weather maps, an upper
level disturbance is ejecting out of the Southwest, headed toward the
Plains states. A long, snake stationary front is draped across the
middle part of the country. The upper disturbance will push the front
toward Alabama, but a stronger subtropical ridge will keep the
boundary at bay until at Wednesday. A few showers could break out
this afternoon over mainly Northwest Alabama, but rainfall amounts
will be light and spotty at best..

THE NEW WORK WEEK: Monday and Tuesday will still feature the
influence of the strong southerly flow, which will pump in a good
supply or warm and moist air over the Deep South. Highs will continue
in the 70s and overnight lows will be mild, in the 50s. This is well
above seasonal norms for Alabama in March. There will be small
chances of rain both Monday and Tuesday, but again, amounts will be
light and coverage spotty. By Wednesday, the front will make it into
Central Alabama, accompanied by showers and storms and a trend to
cooler. Rain will continue into the weekend if the front hangs
around, but forecast confidence is low.

ONE YEAR AGO: We prematurely rejoiced as snow fell across much of
Central Alabama, including the Birmingham area. We believed for
awhile that the snowless streak at the Birmingham Airport had been
broken. But it turned out that only a trace of snow fell at the
Airport, and that is not considered to be measurable snow. The
snowless streak was orken last week when three inches of snow fell
officially.

ON THIS DATE IN 1909: Brinkley AR was directly in the path of an F4
tornado during the evening. Eight hundred buildings and homes were
destroyed in the town and several entire families were killed. Forty
nine total fatalities were attributed to the twister along its 15 mile
path. Injuries numbered 600. At least six other major tornadoes
touched down in Arkansas that day, killing an additional eighteen
people.
