ALABAMA ONE CALL
KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Showers Ahead...

A weather tug of war will highlight our forecast as we head through
the coming week. A strong subtropical ridge of high pressure will
continue to be anchored off the East Coast of Florida. This high
pressure system will keep the main weather zone to our northwest
through at least Tuesday.

DECENT START TO THE WEEK: A strong southerly flow around the high
pressure system continues over Alabama and the Deep South. We are
starting the day off with a good deal of clouds across Alabama, along
with some patchy fog over southern sections. The clouds will break up
gradually during the day, allowing for some sun. This will send
temperatures soaring again into the middle and upper 70s. Tomorrow
may actually feature more sunshine, and we could touch 80 degrees in
many locations.

MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: A strong upper level disturbance will pass
around the periphery of the high pressure ridge on Wednesday. As it
does, the frontal boundary will try to surge into here. There is
still a lot of conjecture as to how far south it will make it. It
looks reasonable that it could make it to south of Birmingham before
stalling. We should see showers and perhaps a few storms Wednesday,
followed by a bit of a break on Thursday, but more showers will arrive
on Friday. The rain will last into Saturday, and it looks like the
front may hang around into Sunday, with more showers again by then.

SPRING BREAK SNEAK PEEK: The beaches of Alabama/NW Florida will see
a couple of wet weather systems during the week of the 14th-22nd, as
will Gatlinburg. Orlando will see a warm start, but an extended
period of wet weather through much of the week. Washington DC looks
wet and cool. Heading west to ski? Mostly dry with one chance of a
big snow, around Monday the 16th.

MONTGOMERY'S JASMINE HILL GARDENS OPENS FOR SPRING: The beautiful
Jasmine Hill Gardens in Montgomery will open on March 13th so that the
public can enjoy a gorgeous display of spring color along with the
trademark Greek statuary. The Three Graces is a new stunning marble
copy of the goddesses from Greek Mythology. The twenty acre gardens
will be alive with beautiful tulips and bulbs mixed with winter
annuals and camellias that will be joined by azaleas, dogwoods,
wisteria, hydrangeas and other flowering trees and shrubs through the
month of March. Public tours will start this Friday and run through
Sunday May 17th. www.jasminhill.org.

ON THIS DATE IN 1960: Destructive cold temperatures occurred across
Alabama and Georgia. The cold affected fruit crops and most
vegetables. Low temperatures over these regions were in the single
digits in the north, low teens across central portions and mid to
upper teens in the south. These temperatures were cold enough to wipe
out any fruit crops that had reached the blooming stage. At 20
degrees even Peaches at the first pink stage of development will have
50% percent losses while at 15 degrees, as much as 90% losses are
likely. Most of the Alabama peach crop was destroyed that year by the
freeze.
