...A Nice Sunday...

A good bit of clouds across Alabama on this Sunday as a deep southerly
flow continues around a dominant subtropical high located east of
Florida. This sprawling anticyclone is anchored in place, and as is
often the case, it will act as a shield over the southeastern United
States, keeping the stream of disturbances to our north. In the
battleground between the high and an upper trough over the western
United States, showers and storms will be the rule. This
meteorological tug or war will be the major player in our weather
forecast over the next seven days.

THROUGH TUESDAY: This same basic pattern will continue through
Tuesday across Alabama. A warm, relatively moist airmass is in place
with the strong southerly flow continuing and the boundary just to our
northwest with disturbances zipping along it. On Tuesday, a fairly
potent upper trough and surface low will move out of the Midwest, and
this will give the front a little southward momentum. But until then,
we will continue to see a mix of considerable clouds and some sunshine
this afternoon, Monday and Tuesday. Showers should be limited to
northwest sections today and generally the north half of the state
tomorrow and the next day. Highs will be warm, in the 70s. Overnight
lows will be in the 50s.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: The front will slowly edge towards Alabama on
Wednesday. This will generate increasing rain chances across the
area, especially Wednesday afternoon into the early morning hours on
Thursday. There could be some decent rainfall amounts with this
action. Timing the disturbances is difficult this far out, but
Thursday could be an in between day. Rain and storms should return on
Friday afternoon and night, with showers lasting into Saturday.
Cooler air may arrive Sunday.

MIDWEST ACTION: Severe weather is possible today across parts of the
Midwest down into the Arklatex ahead of an eastward surging cold
front. Areas from eastern Missouri through Kentucky and Illinois into
Ohio are outlooked for a severe threat this afternoon into this
evening. A few tornadoes are possible in the warm sector ahead of the
surface low that is moving toward Chicago. There were seven reports
of tornadoes on Saturday in the southern part of Kansas. In addition,
there were 53 reports of large hail and damaging winds. The threat
moves back to the Plains on Monday, across southern Kansas, Oklahoma
and northern Texas.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: The Milwaukee WI area got an early start on its
tornado season as a tornado formed right over the runway at the
General Mitchell
International Airport and moved northeast toward downtown.
Significant damage was reported, along with 16 injuries, but
fortunately, no fatalities.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Ice falling as it thawed from cables on New
York City suspension bridges caused nightmarish traffic jams as lanes
had to be closed on the five bridges. Falling shards of ice shattered
windshields and caused one injury, in addition to the inconvenience
for commuters.
