...March Showers...

MARCH SHOWERS: A big lumbering surface low is moving out of
Mississippi and into Alabama on this last winter Saturday of 2009.
The low is moving along a wavy frontal boundary that separates cooler
air to the north from warm and moist tropical air to the south. Rains
were widespread overnight, although amounts were not excessive. As
the low passes, the frontal system will be nudged back to the south,
taking most of the rains into South Central Alabama later today. The
rain should taper off by early afternoon in the I-59 corridor,
although there could be a few showers into the overnight hours as
another wave of rain overspreads South Alabama. Highs today will be
in the middle 50s across the Tennessee Valley, lower 60s across the
I-20 corridor and lower 70s at Montgomery.

SALVAGEABLE SUNDAY? Rain will continue across South Alabama on
Sunday, continuing into Monday as a stronger upper disturbance pushes
into the state from the west, finally sweeping out the rain. Central
Alabama should experience mainly dry conditions tomorrow, although a
light shower is not out of the question. Highs will be seasonable, in
the middle 60s, after morning lows around 50. The day will start out
cloudy, but there could be a good bit of sun in the afternoon.

DRY WEEK AHEAD: Monday will be a pleasant day, with lots of sun and
highs topping out around 70 degrees. Expect similar conditions
Tuesday and Wednesday. By midweek, high pressure will build down the
East Coast into the Carolinas, and as it does, our winds will
increasingly come from the southeast. Showers may re-enter the
picture as a fairly toothless front zips by in the Thursday time frame.

SPRING BREAK FORECAST: Showers through Monday night along the Gulf
coast, with a few washout periods in store. But things will improve
quickly starting Tuesday. Highs will be in the 60s through the
weekend, edging back into the 70s for the remainder of the week. Gulf
temperatures are still a little chilly, in the upper 60s to lower
70s. If you're heading to see the Big Rat in Orlando, it looks fine.
80s through Monday, then a slight shower chance on Tuesday, and fine
70s the rest of the week. Heading west to ski? A few showers after
midweek, likely rain in the lower elevations, a mix in the ski
regions. Some of the Colorado resorts expecting 40s by day this week,
likely leading to some spring skiing conditions.

STORM OF THE CENTURY: On Sunday morning, March 14, 1993, Birmingham
was still buried under thirteen inches of snow. The thirteen inches
was a record for twenty four hours, a single storm, any month and is
the deepest snow cover on record here. Under crystal clear skies with
a deep blanket of snow that night, the mercury plummeted to a record
March reading of 2F. As the powerful storm system roared up the East
Coast, it wreaked havoc over a wide area. Hurricane force winds were
recorded at Boston. A foot of snow fell in the Megaopolis of the
Northeast. Over 200 people died and damage totaled $6 billion, making
it the costliest extratropical storm in history.
