....A Few Strong Storms Overnight...

This week features the anniversary of the most significant tornado
outbreak in the history of the United States. On April 3-4, 1974, a
total of 148 tornadoes touched down in a 24 hour period. Alabama was
arguably the hardest hit state, with 77 fatalities of the 319 reported
during the tragedy. If you are like me, I am sure that you have
memories of that terrible night. If you do, please email me your
recollections at bill.murray@theweathercompany.com. I will post them
on Tuesday, the 33rd anniversary of the event.

STRONG STORMS TONIGHT: The upper level system to our west this
afternoon has taken on a negative tilt, meaning that it is oriented
more northwest to southeast than the typical northeast to southwest.
This orientation means a more energetic trough. Severe weather will
continue this afternoon to our west, and reach the western border of
Alabama this evening. There will be some instability, although it
will be dropping overnight, and there will be some shear, so organized
storms will be likely. But the good news is that it will not be a
widespread severe weather outbreak. Just remember, all it takes is
one thunderstorm downburst or isolated tornado to wreak havoc if it is
in your neighborhood, so please keep abreast of the weather.

TONIGHT/SUNDAY: The squall line slowly runs out of steam overnight
and the front becomes parallel with the upper flow. Rain should
continue into the morning hours tomorrow before ending. Rainfall
amounts should average one half to one inch. Areas southeast of the
eventual frontal position may see more storm development on Sunday
afternoon. That appears it will be most likely in the I-85 corridor
of East Central and South Central Alabama. But, the Storm Prediction
Center has much of Alabama in a Slight Risk outlook for potential
severe weather tomorrow.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will see temperatures rebound to well above
normal levels. We will see readings in the middle 80s again with a
good bit of sunshine. By Tuesday, we will begin to see changes in the
overall pattern. Instead of a large ridge of high pressure over the
Southeast, we will see the transition to a large trough over the
eastern United States. Of course, this means a change to cooler
weather. The harbinger of this change will come in the form of a cold
front that will arrive late Tuesday night. We expect widespread
storms Tuesday night and cooler conditions on Wednesday. We will see
widespread readings in the 40s Thursday and Friday morning. There
could even be a few 30s in the normally colder locations.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Waterspout moved onshore at Buxton NC on
Hatteras Island during the
early morning hours. Seven people were hurt and $800,000 in damage.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Washington DC was finishing one of its least
snowy winter seasons ever, with only 0.1 inch of snow falling all
winter. This tied the record for least snowfall in a winter season.

...Storms Tonight...

For two weeks, I have been watching the weather models for my good
friends David and Ina Mae Sher. Their beautiful daughter Melanie is
getting married tonight. The wedding is outside, so they have been
understandably concerned. Funny thing is, the GFS from 14 days ago is
right on track. I initially said it would be warm and balmy, with a
nice southerly wind and a chance of late night storms. Of course, we
had to spice things up with a mid-week scare that the storms would be
centered on the wedding. Luckily, not so.

NATURE'S AIR CONDITIONING: Our little impressive backdoor cold front
really provided some excellent conditions Friday afternoon. I was
standing on 6th Avenue about 3 p.m. thinking this is one of those days
that is close to perfect in Alabama. The mercury was a comfortable 70
degrees with a refreshing easterly wind. We'll take it.

MORE OF THE SAME: Today looks to be nearly a carbon copy of today,
with a good bit of stratocumulus in the relatively cool, relatively
moist easterly flow. The strong March sun will burn off some of the
clouds by afternoon, allowing for some sunshine. Temperatures should
warm into the middle to upper 70s. The clouds should thicken by late
afternoon, and then an approaching cold front will set the stage for…

STRONG STORMS: Fairly strong low pressure is on the Kansas/South
Dakota border this morning. This low is weakening slowly as it moves
northeast. It will pass into Iowa and then Minnesota during the day.
A cold front will push our way, and instability levels will be strong
enough to support a few strong storms tonight. The rain should enter
West Alabama during the evening hours and progress eastward overnight.
The storms will be accompanied by some heavy rain, as well as small
hail and gusty winds. Widespread severe weather is not expected. The
rain and storms will weaken as it slowly edges eastward through the
morning hours. Hopefully it will go slowly enough to allow for some
decent rainfall amounts. We are calling for one half to one inch on
average across Central Alabama. That is welcome news since we are now
over nine inches below normal for the year. .

LOOKING AHEAD: Monday looks dry, but the old front will come north
with a chance of showers on Tuesday. Another cold front will arrive
Tuesday night, with a chance of showers and storms. Then we will go
into a cooler pattern. We might even see some lows in the 30s in the
normally colder locations next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1962: Seventeen people were killed by a tornado at
Milton, Florida, It ranks as one of the three deadliest tornadoes in
Florida history. The F3 twister killed seventeen people and injured
one hundred. Damage was estimated at $1.5 million.

ENCOURAGING CHANCE OF RAIN OVER THE WEEKEND: Cooler air from the
east forced its way westward across Alabama today. It is known as the
wedge. Temperatures were a lot cooler as compared to yesterday,
especially over the east half of the state. It was more than 20
degrees cooler in Birmingham than yesterday. Around 2 o'clock this
afternoon, it was only 60 degrees atop Mt. Cheaha. This made the day
much more comfortable than the record highs in the mid and upper 80s
Thursday.

While that news is welcome, it is by far not the most important
news. We are encouraged now that our chance for some beneficial rain
over the weekend is for real. In fact, we believe that many parts of
the state will get some amounts of between ¾ and 1 inch and some
places could get more late Saturday night and through Sunday morning.
It is also encouraging that another round of showers and
thunderstorms will arrive later Tuesday an increase Tuesday night.

A BIG COOL DOWN NEXT WEEK: A strong high pressure system will be
pushing a cold front through Alabama Tuesday night. This will bring a
significant cool down and highs by the middle of next week will only
be in the 60s. By around Thursday morning, we may see 40s for a low
and even some upper 30s in the valleys.

SEVERE WEATHER: Severe thunderstorms were pounding Texas today,
including some significant flash flooding. The central part of that
state was under a moderate risk. For Saturday and Saturday night, the
NWS has a slight risk of severe weather eastward as far as Louisiana
and Mississippi. We believe that Alabama can escape with little or no
risk, because our main showers and thunderstorms will arrive very
late Saturday night extending through Sunday morning. We could have
some strong storms. We will watch it.

AT THE BEACH: Most of Saturday will be dry, but showers and
thunderstorms will start Saturday night becoming numerous late
Saturday night and Sunday. There is only a slight chance of showers
on Monday and Tuesday. High temperatures will be consistently in the
mid and upper 70s.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Way back in 1884, a very scary black tornado
struck Howard, South Dakota. It became famous because it was the
first tornado ever photographed in the USA. Hottest in the USA
yesterday was 90 at Albany, Georgia, Crestview, Florida and Edinburg,
Texas. It was 1 below zero this morning at Rawlings located on I-80
in South-Central Wyoming. It was 16 below at Eagle, Alaska. 225
inches of snow on the ground at Eagle Crest, which is a ski area near
Juneau.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am off tomorrow and I am thinking
about dragging Little Miss Molly out of bed at daylight to go on a
long walk and then have a vigorous ballgame with her. That would
surprise her, because she often has to beg for the ballgames. I
wonder sometimes how it would be to exchange places with Little Miss
Molly. I would have to have a rope around my neck (leash) every time
I went outside. I would have to beg, at times, for a bathroom break.
Getting more concerned about the dog food situation. Going to watch
that very, very closely. Life goes on.....

...Rain Returns to Alabama Sunday...

The temperature soared to 87 degrees in Birmingham yesterday, breaking
a 79 year old record (the old record high for March 29 was 85 degrees
set in 1928). That was also 17 degrees above the normal high for the
date, and it tied the warmest temperature so far in 2007 (we also
reached 87 degrees on March 25). Montgomery and Dothan were the
warmest spots in Alabama with a summer-like 89 degrees.

A COOL CHANGE: A nice wedge of cooler air flow into Alabama from the
east today, and we expect afternoon temperatures to be at 10 to 15
degrees cooler. Along the Georgia border, places like Centre, Heflin,
and Roanoke probably won't make it out of the 60s today, while we are
expecting a high somewhere between 70 and 75 for the Birmingham metro
area. There will be some clouds with the cooler air, but at this point
the chance of any significant rain looks extremely
small.

THE WEEKEND: Still looks like the main chance of rain over the weekend
will come on Sunday.
Tomorrow will be dry with a mix of sun and clouds; the afternoon high
will be somewhere between 78 and 81 for most locations. Then, on
Sunday, we will highlight a good chance of showers and thunderstorms
with our long awaited upper trough moving into the state from the
west. The best energy associated with the trough will pass well to the
north of Alabama, and with weakening dynamics we don't expect a major
problem with severe weather. The good news is that one-half inch of
rain looks likely for the northern half of the state on Sunday, which
isn't exactly a drought-buster, but it should settle the dust and the
pollen for a little while.

NEXT WEEK: The computer models are continuing to trend toward a drier
scenario for Alabama on Monday, but another chance of rain and
thunderstorms is ahead for Tuesday night and Wednesday morning as
another cold front moves into the state. At first glance that looks
like another setup for about 1/2 inch of rain. And, some pretty chilly
air should drop into the state after that round of rain; there is some
hint we might have a chance of frost during the early morning hours
around April 6-7 as some Polar air drops into the Deep South. Way too
early to be specific, of course.

DRY DRY DRY: This is the driest start to a calendar year on record
(records go back to 1894) in Huntsville... the total rainfall since
January 1 is only 6.46". Birmingham is not faring much better; the
total at the Birmingham Airport for 2007 is only 6.57", which is 8.82"
below normal. The total for the month of March is only 1.01". We
typically receive over six inches of rain during the month of March.

ROAMING: A tornado touched down yesterday in the community of O'Keene,
Oklahoma yesterday. Rainfall totals yesterday included 1.42" at
Oklahoma City and 1.69" at Goodland, Kansas. Hottest places in the
nation yesterday were Crestview, Florida, Albany, Georgia, and
Edinburg, Texas... all three cities reported a high of 90 degrees.

GOOD CHANCE OF RAIN LATE IN THE WEEKEND: Another warm afternoon
across Alabama as temperatures were getting well into the 80s. Before
the day is over, a few locations may have near record highs for March
29. But take heart, cooler air arrives tomorrow. It is the old wedge
effect that we love to see occasionally, however it is difficult to
forecast. This happens when cooler air pushes down the Atlantic
Seaboard and then westward across South Carolina and Georgia into
Alabama. We sometimes call it a backdoor cold front. This should
bring us at least a 10-degree drop in temperature Friday. Over on the
east edge of Alabama, the temperature may have trouble getting above
70. In fact, I will go out on a limb somewhat and say that the high
atop Mt. Cheaha tomorrow will be about 66. There is a slight chance
of a few light showers with that transition, although we did not
include them in the forecast. At 2 o'clock this afternoon,
temperatures were only in the 50s over much of South Carolina and
even some 40s in parts of North Carolina. There is a chance that our
75 forecast for tomorrow for Central Alabama may be a bit too warm,
but that can be adjusted later.

FINALLY, SOME CRITICALLY NEEDED RAIN: There are increasing
indications that much of Alabama will get some beneficial rain late
in the weekend. It still looks like Sunday will be the target day for
the best chance of rain and the biggest amounts. If we had to say so
now, we think that the best chance of rain will be from mid to late
morning Sunday through much of Sunday night. Across Central Alabama,
the total rain from the entire system could be somewhere between ½
and 1 inch.

TORNADO OUTBREAK: An amazing 65 tornado reports yesterday and
overnight from the Texas Panhandle straight northward to extreme
Western Nebraska. That number will be reduced, because it is near
certain that some of the reports were about the same tornado. At
least 4 people were killed, including 2 at Beaver, Oklahoma and 1 at
Holly, Colorado in the extreme SE part of the state.

AT THE BEACH: Generally pleasant temperatures all the way through
next Tuesday with highs around 78 along the edge of the water, but
lower 80s inland. Most of Friday and Saturday will be dry, but there
will be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, then
generally dry from Monday through next Wednesday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A real bona fide blizzard over the Northern
Rockies in the last 24 hours. An amazing 58 inches of snow fell in
the last 24 hours at Hobbs Park, Wyoming. That is an elevated remote
station. 42 inches fell at Townsend Creek in the same state. The wind
gusted as high as 62 mph at Buffalo in Eastern Wyoming during the
period of heavy snow. In the Texas Panhandle, a tornado actually
moved across an automated weather facility knocking it out of
service, but not before recording a 3-second gust to 127 mph.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Spring is bursting out all over. Even
the Old Crow Motel, which is the tallest tree on our walking track,
looks healthy. It is a dilapidated old tree and we know it cannot be
around many more years. It is one of the favorite locations for Miss
Molly and me when out walking, because there is a wide open area
where she can run and play. Dogwoods are exploding. I think Little
Miss Molly might be a weather girl at heart, because she wants to be
up at all hours. A midnight ballgame last night wound her down, so
she could sleep. Life goes on.....

...Record Warmth Likely Today...

The record high for today in Birmingham is 85 degrees, set 79 years
ago in 1928. That record is very much in danger as the March heat wave
rolls along; we are forecasting a high of 87 today, which is seventeen
degrees above normal for March 29. An upper level ridge will keep the
sky mostly sunny with only a few fair weather cumulus clouds around.

COOLER AIR ARRIVES TOMORROW: A nice surge of cooler air will move into
Alabama from the east late tonight and tomorrow; this air originated
over Eastern Canada, and has been moving down the eastern side of the
Appalachian Mountains. Daytime high temperatures tomorrow will drop
into the 70 to 75 degree range, and some communities near the Georgia
border might not make it out of the 60s. There will be some scattered
clouds around, but no rain is expected.

THE WEEKEND: A strong upper trough, now over the Rocky Mountain
states, will approach Alabama over the weekend and will finally bring
a decent chance of some rain to the state. The system will take its
time in moving to the east, and it now looks like the best chance of
showers will come late Saturday night and into Sunday. At the moment
it looks like rain totals of 1/4 to 1/2 inch will be possible, and the
severe weather risk looks minimal with weakening upper support and
marginal instability values.

A surface front will stall out over the central part of the state
Sunday, and that will mean some risk of showers into Monday of next
week. Then, another cold front will approach with a good chance of
showers and storms late Tuesday and Tuesday night. Cooler air will
follow that rain by Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

HOW DRY? Birmingham's rainfall deficiency for the year is up to 8.63".
Our rain total since January 1 is only 6.57", and the total for March
is 1.01". We normally receive over six inches of rain during March,
which is the wettest month of the year. Down in Pike County; today
will be the 28th day in a row with no rain for Troy; their last rain
came on March 1 on the big severe weather outbreak day.

WEDNESDAY'S WARMTH: The warmest spots in Alabama yesterday were Dothan
and Pinson with 86 degrees. Birmingham's official high was 83, within
six degrees of the record high for March 28 (89 set in 1919).

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: As of late last night, there were a total of 47
tornadoes reported to the Storm Prediction Center in a broad area from
West Texas to Nebraska. There were reports of several 18 wheelers
flipped over by a tornado at a rest area along I-40 in the Texas
Panhandle, not far from Amarillo. There is a risk of severe storms
again today from Texas northward into the Plains states. Nashville was
soaked by several showers and storms yesterday; their rain total was
1.30". Hottest place in the nation, for the second day in a row, was
Laredo, Texas with 92 degrees.

COOLER AIR FROM THE EAST BY FRIDAY: Nearly ½ inch of rain fell over
extreme NW Alabama during the night, but almost everybody else
remained high and dry. Today was the 27th day with no measurable rain
at Troy in SE Alabama and it was the 12th day in a row with no rain
in Tuscaloosa. The rain deficit across Central Alabama is now about
8.50 inches. This is quite significant. Much caution is advised in
the dry woodlands. Numerous counties in the state are under a no burn
order. Temperatures continue far above normal. The high tomorrow will
be close to 15 degrees warmer than it should be for late March. We
are watching a strong high pressure area centered over SE Canada SE
of Hudson Bay. It is a 1044 mb high, which is as strong as we often
see in winter. Colder air is beginning to press down over the NE U.S.
The high will bulge southward down the Eastern Seaboard and send
Alabama some cooler air from the east by Friday.

WHEN IT WILL RAIN AND HOW MUCH: The sequence of events has slowed.
The chance of any significant rain is nil through Friday. A cold
front will be pushing toward the SE on Sunday. We think our better
chance of rain will be Sunday and Sunday night, however we expect
some showers and maybe a thunderstorm late in the day on Saturday and
Saturday night. We will do good to get about ½ inch of rain from all
of this. I need to correct something that I wrote yesterday when I
mentioned a tornado that destroyed the Goshen United Methodist Church
near Piedmont. It was a Palm Sunday disturbance instead of Easter.

AT THE BEACH: Because the water temperatures over the Northern Gulf
are still relatively cool, high temperatures along the immediate
beach area will be in the upper 70s all the way through next Tuesday.
Inland, just a few miles, they will be in the lower 80s. Little or no
rain until a slight risk on Saturday. Scattered showers and storms on
Sunday and Monday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Buffalo, Wyoming was reporting ¼-mile
visibility and heavy snow and gusts to near 50 mph. That is a big
storm over the Rockies and Northern Plains. Blizzard conditions are
expected in places like Sheridan, Wyoming and snowdrifts could reach
3 to 6 feet. Heavy snow also over other parts of the Rockies. In
Northern Arizona, Flagstaff has received only 47 inches of snow this
season. They should have had 94 inches by today. Cold temperature
this morning 33 below zero at Colville Village, Alaska. An outbreak
of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes possible from NW Texas into
parts of Nebraska this afternoon and tonight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am still dismayed at the dog food
danger situation. I just do not understand how rat poison could have
gotten mixed with so much of the food. I dread the next several
months as more and more dogs and cats do not make it. As far as we
know, we are safe with Little Miss Molly since she never has anything
but dry dog food. Have you ever gone shopping and felt a little
uneasy about so many surveillance cameras? Well, I have a constant
live surveillance camera in the form of Little Miss Molly. She has
eagle eyes and she keeps them focused on me every time I move. I
cannot even go out and get the newspaper and mail without her
pressing her little face to the front door window and watching my
every step. I guess it is good to be loved by a little 9-pound
dynamo. I must admit I like it. Life goes on......

...Only A Few Isolated Showers...

Unseasonably warm weather will continue across Alabama today and
tomorrow, with afternoon temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees above
normal for late March. Look for a high in the low 80s today, with mid
80s likely tomorrow. We will mention the chance of a few small,
isolated showers today as a weakening upper air trough passes to the
north of Alabama. The best chance of a shower will be over the
northern third of the state, and even there the chance of any one spot
getting wet is about one in eight.

TO THE WEST: A strong upper trough will continue to deep today over
the western half of the nation; this will bring lots of snow to the
Rocky Mountain region, and the chance of strong to severe storms to
the Southern Plains this afternoon. This feature will be a big player
in our weekend weather, and should bring our next significant chance
of rain to the state.

TO THE EAST: Much cooler air will be moving southward from New England
in coming days, and a low level easterly flow will steer some of that
into Alabama by Friday. We expect daytime highs on Friday to be about
ten degrees cooler; in the mid 70s. There will be some clouds with the
cooler air, but for now we do not expect any rain on Friday.

THE WEEKEND: At this point it looks like the best chance of showers
and thunderstorms will come
from about 2:00 p.m. Saturday through 4:00 a.m. Sunday. A few strong
storms could be involved, but for now the chance of a major severe
weather threat looks minimal due to the cooler air (more stable) at
the surface, and the better dynamics passing north of Alabama.
Unfortunately the latest models have backed off on the amount of rain
expected; it now looks like the average rain total will be about
one-quarter of an inch, with some spots seeing up to one-half inch of
rain. That won't make much of a dent in our rainfall deficiency for
the year, which stands at 8.44 inches.

PEEKING AHEAD TO APRIL: With most of the state under a fire alert, and
those with allergies really struggling with the high pollen levels, we
have good news in that the upper ridge, which has been keeping us warm
and dry for the last few weeks, really disappears as we get into
April. This should open the door for more frequent rain producing
systems and occasional shots of cooler air. At this time it looks like
we will have a nice window for rain next week in the April 3-4 time
frame.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: A tornado was reported yesterday in Benton,
Louisiana, which is near Shreveport. There were 34 reports of large
hail across Northwest Louisiana and Southwest Arkansas. Todd Foisy,
the ABC 33/40 Online Weather Watcher in Girdwood, Alaska, reported a
high yesterday of 29 degrees with 50 inches of snow on the ground
(that is no mistake!). Todd reports that they have not been above
freezing since February 17. The hottest spot in the nation yesterday
was Laredo, Texas with 91 degrees.

Welcome to The Weather Notebook for Wednesday, March 28, 2007.

The Weather Notebook is a historical database of past significant
weather events. It includes a history of major tornadoes, blizzards,
hurricanes, and everything and anything else related to weather. We
hope you enjoy it, and if you know of a significant weather event we
haven't included, please let us know.

On this day in ..

* 1920 - Major outbreak of tornadoes from Alabama and Georgia to
Michigan. Tornado in Chicago kills 20. Worst in city's history. 50
killed in Alabama and Georgia. West Point GA hardest hit. 20 people
were killed and 300 were injured as an F4 tornado ripped through Will
and Cook counties in Illinois. Total damage was 2 million dollars.
* 1921 - Cold front caused temperatures to plummet 20 degrees in
20 minutes in the Garden State of New Jersey. Temperatures as dramatic
as 55 degrees in 18 hours also observed.
* 1942 - 22 inches of snow in Baltimore MD.
* 1945 - Record heat wave in East. 90 degree temperatures observed
in parts of Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and
Pennsylvania.
* 1955 - Marianna FL picks up one inch of snow for latest
measurable snow in the Sunshine State. Ground was whitened in Panama
City FL.
* 1980 - Although springtime was starting in the Rocky Mountains,
the snow just kept on coming! One foot or more of snow fell over
portions of eastern Colorado, southwest Nebraska, northwest Kansas and
southeastern Wyoming. Winds reached 40 mph and Valentine, Nebraska
received 13 inches of snow. North Platte, Nebraska checked in with 15
inches.
* 1984 - A swarm of 36 tornadoes strikes South and North Carolina
during the afternoon and evening hours, killing 57 people, injuring
1250 and doing $200 million in damage. Many of the fatalities were in
mobile homes. One tornado near Tatum, SC, an F4 on the Fujita scale,
was 2.5 miles wide at one point. This outbreak was the worst in the
area in 60 years.
* 1987 - The second blizzard in less than a week was in progress
across the central plains. 16 inches of snow was recorded at Blue
Hill, Nebraska and 14 inches piled up at Omaha, Nebraska. 12 to 18
inches of snow was common across northwestern Kansas. Winds gusting up
to 70 mph whipped drifts 20 to 30 feet high in some places. The storm
took a great toll on cattle as well.
* 1988 - Severe thunderstorms unloaded hail up to 4 inches in
diameter in the Oklahoma City area. 1500 new cars at a General Motors
plant were totaled. Several large aircraft were heavily damaged at
Tinker Air Force Base. Damage in Oklahoma County alone totaled 35
million
* 1992 - 1.6 inches of snow fell on this date at Syracuse, New
York. This brought the seasonal snowfall total to 162.8 inches, which
set a new all-time seasonal snowfall record for the location. The old
seasonal record was 162.0 inches set back in the winter of 1989-90
* 1996 - Williamsport, Pennsylvania recorded .8 inches of snow on
this day to bring its seasonal snowfall total to 83.9 inches -- the
city's snowiest winter ever.

MAYBE SOME RELIEF BY SATURDAY: About 20,000 acres of woodlands have
burned during our current dry spell. A no burn order continues for 43
of the 67 counties in Alabama, most of them over the western two-
thirds of the state. However, it would be wise to consider
significant fire danger in every county, because every section of the
state has a significant rain deficit so far this year. March has been
unusually dry and it is normally our wettest month.

RELIEF IN SIGHT: Not too sure how widespread the rain will be. It
appears that Saturday will bring us our best chance of rain and many
communities could get around ½ inch or so. The showers and storms
should extend into the nighttime hours Saturday. The Storm Prediction
Center mentions the possibility of a few severe thunderstorms over
the western two–thirds of Alabama Saturday. However, this is beyond
their normal time for specific outlooks, but it is something that we
will watch.

Meanwhile, temperatures will continue well above normal until
Friday. By Friday, some slightly cooler air will slip into the state
from the east. We call that the wedge effect since the cooler air
comes down the Atlantic Seaboard and presses westward. Our warmest
day should be Thursday with mid 80s. It will be at least 10 degrees
cooler Friday and Saturday.

A TRAGIC DAY IN ALABAMA: It was 13 years ago today on May 27, 1994
when a tornado destroyed the Goshen United Methodist Church near
Piedmont. 10 children, in the middle of an Easter program, were killed.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A snow survey this morning showed that only
8.4% of the lower 48 states had a snow cover. It was 42% at this time
last month. Recent warmth has really played havoc with snow cover.
However, a new storm is dumping heavy snow in the mountains of Utah
and Colorado. There will be thunder and lightning with the snow. As
much as 14 to 26 inches may accumulate in the Wasatch Mountains of
Northern Utah and up to 10 inches in Central Colorado. A Tornado
Watch was posted for this afternoon and early this evening for North
Louisiana and Southern Arkansas. Low temperatures this morning
included 18 at Redmond, Oregon and 24 below zero at Arctic Village,
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was saddened to hear that some
real close friends had to put down their dog, Freckles. We have
received e-mails from several other folks who have had to go through
the same terrible experience. Also dismayed by the unfolding tainted
dog food disaster. I cannot imagine going through with that. We have
only had Molly less than 5 years and the bonding between that little
girl and me continues to grow every day. It has already reached the
super glue status. Since I got home late Saturday night,, Little Miss
Molly will hardly let me out of her sight. That makes me feel real
good. Life goes on and Little Miss Molly makes life more enjoyable
for a lot of people, including thousands of our readers....

...Another Warm March Day...

What should be the wettest month of the year in Alabama is turning out
to be one of the driest. Birmingham's rain total for the month is only
1.01"; during a normal March we expect over six inches of rain. And,
for the year, the rain deficit is up to 8.25". Most of North-Central
Alabama is considered to be in a moderate drought, while the Tennessee
Valley of extreme North Alabama is in an extreme drought. The stubborn
upper level ridge that has produced this kind of weather this month is
holding tight this morning, and will deflect a storm system over Texas
north of Alabama during the next 48 hours. Any showers that form
during the peak of the daytime heat today and tomorrow should be very
isolated; the chance of any one spot getting wet is only about one on
ten.
Temperatures will remain much warmer than normal; look for afternoon
high temperatures between 80 and 85 degrees through Thursday. The
average high for today is 69, so these values are about 15 degrees
above normal. We do expect some cooler air to slip into the state by
Friday and the weekend as an easterly flow develops across the state;
highs then should drop into the low to mid 70s.

NEXT RAIN: Another deep upper trough will move out of the Rockies
later this week, and it looks like this one will squash the upper
ridge across the Deep South, and will bring our next good chance of
showers and thunderstorms by Saturday. For now, it looks like the best
chance of rain will come from about 2:00 p.m. Saturday through 4:00
a.m. Sunday, and rainfall amounts of 1/2 inch are likely, but some
communities might see one inch. We will also have a chance of strong
to severe thunderstorms, but the wedge of cooler air moving in from
the east might reduce instability enough to prevent a major problem.
We will fine tune the severe weather outlook as we approach the
weekend. The sky should clear on Sunday as a dry slot moves into
Alabama.

FIRE ALERT: A total of 43 counties in Alabama are now under a fire
alert, which is issued by the Alabama Forestry Commission. This alert
covers much of Alabama along and west of I-65, including the
Birmingham metro area. To date for the month of March 2007 there have
been 1,041 fires across Alabama with 20,523 acres burned.

THIRTEEN YEARS AGO TODAY: March 27, 1994 was Palm Sunday, and it would
be a red letter day in Alabama weather history. A violent tornado
touched down near Ragland, in St. Clair County, and moved northeast.
That tornado would strike the Goshen United Methodist Church, just
north of Piedmont along Alabama Highway 9, during the morning worship
service. A total of 20 people died in the church, where they were in
the middle of an Easter drama. One of those that died was Hannah Clem,
the four year old daughter of the pastor, Kelly Clem. The people in
the church did not hear the tornado warning for southern Cherokee
County, which was issued 12 minutes before the church building was
destroyed.

DRYNESS BECOMES MORE SERIOUS: This has been an unusual month of
March so far. There was violent weather on the very first day and
then it seemed that everything changed. The weather turned dry and
way too warm. Yesterday the high temperature across Central Alabama
was about 13 degrees too warm. Here is a look at the shortfall in
rain so far in 2007.

8.05 inches at Birmingham Airport
9.50 inches at Huntsville
5.71 inches in Montgomery
10.60 inches at Mobile Regional Airport

That may not sound like much, but that is the shortage for less than
three months. We still do not see any widespread soaking rain soon.
Our latest forecast will reflect a few showers showing up at some
point Wednesday and a slightly better chance on Friday. We have been
watching the weather to the east today. A slightly cooler air mass
was trying to push down the Atlantic Seaboard and into the Carolinas
and Georgia. Temperatures were only in the 60s and 70s across parts
of South Carolina this afternoon. Some of that slightly cooler air
could reach Alabama Tuesday. Some parts of East Alabama may not get
above the upper 70s tomorrow. By Friday, we expect upper 70s to be
fairly common across this area.

AT THE BEACH: I suppose some more schools are on Spring Break this
week, since they are not all going at the same time this year. High
temperatures for the remainder of this week will be between 78 and
82. Most days will have more sunshine than clouds. A few showers and
thunderstorms may start as early as Friday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: It is all in a name. Cape Fairweather, in the
coastal area of Alaska, is expected to get 6 to 12 inches of snow
during the next few days with winds up to 40. A lightning bolt can
produce an electrical charge as much as 300 million volts. That is
why I am so afraid when it starts popping. Coldest in the lower 48
this morning was 16 at Houlton, Maine. The wind chill at Deadhorse,
Alaska was 60 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure did enjoy Friday and Saturday
at Mississippi State University for the Annual Severe Weather
Symposium. Lots of great information. A weather person would be a
fool if they did not try to continuously learn something new.
Mississippi State is a beautiful clean campus and well landscaped.
Naturally, we had a bit of chow while over there, including our
traditional Friday night foray to Pap's Place in Ackerman for a big
feast. There were 19 of us. When I got home late Saturday night,
Little Miss Molly was the most excited in the nearly 5 years that we
have been blessed to have her. She only weighs 9 pounds, but she
jumped high off the floor at least 25 times without stopping. By
then, she was out of breath and I grabbed her and we did a lot of
hugging. After her quick treat, she made me play ball with extra
innings—the longest we had ever played. Then she got up in my ex-
recliner for a short nap only to insist on a second ballgame before
bedtime. I love it. Life goes on......

...Summer Like Weather Continues...

How about those temperature readings on Sunday? All reporting
locations in Alabama except for Crossville and Meridianville were in
the 80s. Its more of the same for the coming week as Alabama remains
in a warm weather pattern for early Spring.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: High pressure is centered off the coast of New
England this morning. This easterly flow around the high is
propelling a weak backdoor cold front toward Alabama from the east.
This front will bring a slight chance of thunderstorms to eastern
sections today. The difference in airmasses will not be great, and as
the high shifts eastward, our flow will become more southeasterly with
time. What this means is a continued warm pattern for the coming
week. Moisture levels will be on the increase, and the daily range in
temperatures will lessen. Highs will still be in the 80s, and lows
will edge up into the upper 50s. A disturbance in the upper level
southwesterly flow will bring a chance of a few thunderstorms over
northern sections Tuesday afternoon and evening, but chances will be
relatively small. By Wednesday, dry conditions will prevail again,
except that there might be a small chance of a storm over the
Tennessee Valley.

WEEKEND SYSTEM: By Thursday, a vigorous low pressure system will be
moving through the Dakotas, heading for Canada. This low will spark
active thunderstorms over the Plains states. As the system lifts out
to the north, a languishing frontal system will make the Mississippi
River by Friday morning, accompanied by showers and storms. A
secondary low pressure system will form over the Mississippi Valley
Friday and give the area of rain and storms a little more impetus to
move our way. For now, we expect that it will arrive Friday night,
and give us a chance of rain and storms into early Saturday morning.
Timing is very uncertain with this system for now, and we will be able
to refine the schedule in later forecasts. Recent model runs have
trended a little stronger with this system and we will have to monitor
it for potential severe weather, although that looks more likely to
the north of Alabama at this time.

LONG RANGE LOOK: Things cool off a bit next weekend, more toward
normal levels for this time of year as a big Eastern trough sets up
shop. We slowly evolve out of the trough over the following week, but
things will definitely be cooler than they are around these parts now.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: A U.S. Air Force rocket being launched from
Cape Canaveral in Florida was lost just 48 seconds after it took off
when it was struck by lightning. The flash was generated by the
exhaust plume of the rocket. Lightning researchers regularly trigger
lightning flashes by launching rockets when thunderstorms are present.
The loss was $191 million.

....From Spring Like to Summer Like...

It has been a pleasant morning across Alabama on this Sunday. In
fact, it has been a downright pleasant week. One of the nicest in
memory. Temperatures this morning ranged from a pleasant 46F at Fort
Payne and Meridianville in North Alabama to 59F at Brookley Field in
Mobile. It was 57F at the Birmingham Airport, 56F in Calera, 52F in
Tuscaloosa and as well in Anniston.

RECORDS TODAY: Temperatures should run a couple of degrees warmer
than yesterday, with many locations showing up on the upper side of
85F by mid-afternoon. Records for the date include 88F at Birmingham,
85F at Anniston and 83F at Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa looks like a
shoo-in to break their record. Anniston quite possibly. Birmingham,
not so much, but maybe.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: High pressure is centered near Knoxville this
morning, giving us the fine conditions. The air mass over Alabama is
relatively dry, giving us the 30 degree range in temperatures. You
can find some soupy air not so far away, however. Morning dew points
over southern Louisiana were near 70 degrees, including 68 at
Lafayette. Skies were mainly clear over Alabama, but were cloudy to
the west over Louisiana and Texas. We will see increasing high cirrus
clouds through the day blowing in the southwesterly flow aloft over
the state. High pressure over New England will drop southward on
Monday, pushing a wedge of cooler air toward us from the east. It is
not a strong wedge, and we don't expect the effects to be significant.
It could trigger a few showers and isolated storms on Monday, but the
chances are small.

REST OF THE WEEK: We stay in a decent southerly flow through much
of the week ahead, with warm temperatures and increasing moisture.
There could be enough lift for some isolated showers as a couple of
weak troughs ripple by in the flow on Tuesday and Wednesday, but
again, no significant rainfall is expected. I would expect some
severe weather over the Plains by Wednesday and Thursday as a low
lifts northeast out of Oklahoma into Missouri. This system will
spread a weakening area of showers and a few storms into Alabama
overnight Friday night into Saturday morning. Some cooler air will
arrive behind the associated cold front that will move through the
state Saturday morning.

ON THIS DATE IN 1901: March 25, 1901 was a stormy morning in
Birmingham, with an early morning tornado at Ensley and another in
Pratt City around 8:30 a.m. that destroyed about 25 homes. But the
main action came at around 9:30 a.m., when people in the city began to
worry about a darkening cloud to the southwest. The gathering storm
formed into a tornado which ripped through a ten block section of the
South Highlands neighborhood. It next targeted the Lakeview district.
It roared through Avondale and into Irondale, where it fell with a
deadly fury. A total of thirteen people died in Birmingham, another
three in Irondale. The tornado ranks as the sixth deadliest ever to
hit Jefferson County. The Birmingham Public Library has an excellent
publication produced by the Collins Shoe Company as a memento of the
disaster. The back inside cover has an ad for Bostonian men's shoes
for $3.50.

...Warmest Day of the Year...

Temperatures across Alabama warmed into the 80s at all major reporting
stations except Crossville and Meridianville. It was easily the
warmest day for far in 2007, besting the 81F recorded on March 12th
and again this week on Friday. It will be even warmer today, with
temperatures running some 2-3 degrees above yesterday. This will be
enough to put us pretty close to the record high for the date at the
Birmingham Airport. Today's record is 88F. Skies will be partly
cloudy.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By tomorrow, a weak back door cold front will be
wedging into Alabama from the east. The front may have enough oomph
to produce isolated thunderstorms during the late afternoon. The main
effect will be a few more clouds and some slightly cooler temperatures
in its wake. Still, we will be running some ten degrees above normal
Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs near 90. A weak trough will pass to
our north on Tuesday, producing a slight chance of showers. We stay
in the broad southwesterly flow aloft into the weekend as an upper low
sets up to the west of us. This will keep a slight chance of showers
in the forecast. A weakening cold front will approach from the more
traditional northwest late Friday night, delivering a chance of
showers or storms through Saturday morning. The front will back
readings off to more normal levels for late March.

SEVERE WEATHER TODAY: A fairly significant outbreak of severe weather
is expected over the upper Midwest later today across parts of
Wisconsin. That area is covered by a moderate risk outlook today.

NOTES FROM ALL OVER: Two significant earthquakes overnight in the
Pacific. One occurred near t he Japanese Island of Honshu. It
measured 7.0 moment. Another near the island of Vanatu in the South
Pacific. It measured 7.3 moment. The Pacific Typhoon Warning Center
in Hawaii was not concerned about a tsunami threat for Hawaii. Team
Louisiana issued a scathing report blaming the Corps of Engineers for
the levee failures that flooded New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
The report blamed the Corps for not following its mandate in New
Orleans and for using outdated geographical information in maintaining
the necessary levee heights. The Corps has issued a statement in its
own defense.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: The town of Elba in South Alabama received an
amazing 38.09 inches of rain during a four-week period from February
26-March 26 as every river in the state was in flood. Birmingham
received 81.82 inches of rain that year, a record that still stands.
The annual rainfall total at Seven Hills, west of Mobile was a
whopping 96.88 inches. Twenty nine people died in the flooding in
Alabama.
