....A Few Strong Storms Overnight...

This week features the anniversary of the most significant tornado
outbreak in the history of the United States. On April 3-4, 1974, a
total of 148 tornadoes touched down in a 24 hour period. Alabama was
arguably the hardest hit state, with 77 fatalities of the 319 reported
during the tragedy. If you are like me, I am sure that you have
memories of that terrible night. If you do, please email me your

on Tuesday, the 33rd anniversary of the event.

STRONG STORMS TONIGHT: The upper level system to our west this
afternoon has taken on a negative tilt, meaning that it is oriented
more northwest to southeast than the typical northeast to southwest.
This orientation means a more energetic trough. Severe weather will
continue this afternoon to our west, and reach the western border of
Alabama this evening. There will be some instability, although it
will be dropping overnight, and there will be some shear, so organized
storms will be likely. But the good news is that it will not be a
widespread severe weather outbreak. Just remember, all it takes is
one thunderstorm downburst or isolated tornado to wreak havoc if it is
in your neighborhood, so please keep abreast of the weather.

TONIGHT/SUNDAY: The squall line slowly runs out of steam overnight
and the front becomes parallel with the upper flow. Rain should
continue into the morning hours tomorrow before ending. Rainfall
amounts should average one half to one inch. Areas southeast of the
eventual frontal position may see more storm development on Sunday
afternoon. That appears it will be most likely in the I-85 corridor
of East Central and South Central Alabama. But, the Storm Prediction
Center has much of Alabama in a Slight Risk outlook for potential
severe weather tomorrow.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will see temperatures rebound to well above
normal levels. We will see readings in the middle 80s again with a
good bit of sunshine. By Tuesday, we will begin to see changes in the
overall pattern. Instead of a large ridge of high pressure over the
Southeast, we will see the transition to a large trough over the
eastern United States. Of course, this means a change to cooler
weather. The harbinger of this change will come in the form of a cold
front that will arrive late Tuesday night. We expect widespread
storms Tuesday night and cooler conditions on Wednesday. We will see
widespread readings in the 40s Thursday and Friday morning. There
could even be a few 30s in the normally colder locations.

ON THIS DATE IN 1987: Waterspout moved onshore at Buxton NC on
Hatteras Island during the
early morning hours. Seven people were hurt and $800,000 in damage.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Washington DC was finishing one of its least
snowy winter seasons ever, with only 0.1 inch of snow falling all
winter. This tied the record for least snowfall in a winter season.
