GOOD AFTERNOON: It is a hot and hazy summer day across Alabama on this
Saturday. Temperatures range between the upper 80s and lower 90s. Skies
are partly cloudy, with a mix of cumulus clouds that have formed in the
lower layers of the atmosphere and some high clouds that are blowing in from
the north. Humidity levels are relatively low with dew points in the lower
60s for the most part. Thunderstorms have found it hard to develop this
afternoon and only a few isolated ones will form.

OVERNIGHT TONIGHT: Fair and calm conditions will be in place tonight, with
lows dropping into the middle and upper 60s.

SUNDAY WEATHER: The NAM model paints the picture of widely scattered storms
developing tomorrow across the area. The GFS keeps things in central
Alabama basically dry tomorrow, but depicts precipitation developing Sunday
night.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: Both models are aggressive in showing the development of
scattered showers and storms on Monday. This trend seems to be related to
increased moisture levels over the area from a deepening southerly flow on
the backside of Atlantic high pressure. It looks like scattered storms will
develop each day during the coming week, mainly during the afternoon and
evening hours. Temperatures will be near season norms, with highs in the
upper 80s and lows right around 70 degrees.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Things are quiet across the country this afternoon.
An upper low over the Southwest has prompted Flash Flood Watches across
parts of Colorado and Utah. Up in Montana, Wind Advisories are in effect as
strong upper level winds mix down to the surface through conduits opened up
by convective currents. It is waterspout season in Florida, and some were
sighted in the Tampa Bay area this morning. One was near Siesta Key and
another offshore from Holmes Beach.

TROPICS: There is a tropical wave moving across the northwestern Caribbean
Sea. It is not expected to develop into anything.

MONSOON: Do you ever say something to the effect, "It is coming a monsoon
out there." Did you know that usage is incorrect? A monsoon is a seasonal
wind pattern. Probably the best known is the monsoon over the Indian
Subcontinent. Most of the year, a dry northeast wind blows across the area.
In summer, those winds shift around to the southwest, bringing copious
amounts of moisture to the area, along with very heavy rains. The Desert
Southwest of the U.S. is on the northern edge of the Mexican or Summer or
Arizona monsoon (pick your favorite name for it.) It begins in Mexico in
late Spring and spreads northward into Arizona and New Mexico generally by
mid-July. Generally, winds in this region come from the west or northwest.
As the season wind change kicks in, those winds shift around to a southerly
or southeasterly direction, brining in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico,
Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean. At Phoenix, the beginning of the
monsoon is defined as three straight days with an average dewpoint of 55F or
higher. As much as 70% of the region's rainfall typically comes during
monsoon season.

...Dry Weather To Continue...

GOOD MORNING: Morning temperatures today are not quite as comfortable today across Central Alabama. But still not bad for July. Temperatures will rise to right around or just below normal on this Saturday afternoon. Clear skies will give way to scattered cumulus clouds this afternoon, but rain chances will be nearly nil.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: Under fair skies tonight, lows will drop into the middle 60s. Sunday appears to be a carbon copy of today, with highs right around the seasonal norm of 90 degrees.

INTO THE NEW WORK WEEK: High pressure will remain in firm control of Alabama's weather through much of the coming week. Moisture levels will be rising and the increased humidity will be palpable. We will reintroduce the slight chance of afternoon and evening storms by Tuesday. Temperatures will be rising, perhaps reaching the middle 90s, and maybe even the upper 90s by midweek.

AIR QUALITY: Air quality levels are forecast to be in the yellow, or moderate category today and Sunday. Only unusually sensitive individuals should be impacted.

TROPICS: Three tropical waves are traversing the tropical Atlantic as we edge closer to the peak period of hurricane activity. None of them appear to be a threat to develop.

SPACE WEATHER: The two giant storms on Jupiter are converging to a tremendous cell merger.
Scientists are eagerly awaiting the results of the collision.

ON THIS DATE IN 1788: Hail piled up to a depth of 34 inches at Canterbury CT. The melting ice caused significant flooding.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: 3 inches of rain fell at Las Vegas NV from a monsoon thunderstorm, most of it in just one hour. The storm was the worst in Vegas in many years, turning streets into rivers, washing away bridges and car and killing two people. McCarran International Airport was closed for an hour. Many tourists took refuge in the casinos along the strip.

SEVERAL MORE DRY DAYS: Nice influx of cooler and drier air into
Alabama overnight. The high pressure area which brought it, will slide
off to our east and SE, but it will keep us dry into the first part of
next week. Finally, as southerly winds increase some widely scattered
showers or thunderstorms will come back into our weather picture about
Tuesday.

Saturday should be another day of mostly sunshine with relatively low
humidity and highs in the upper 80s. The temperature will gradually
heat up each afternoon starting Sunday and by the middle of next week
we could have some mid 90s. Look for another cool night tonight with
lows generally in the mid 60s. We just have to mention some of the low
temperatures this morning, which were extremely pleasant for July.

55 at Cullman Airport
58 in Jasper and Crossville
59 at Decatur, Meridianville, DeSoto State Park
60 at Huntsville and Gadsden Airport
61 at Pinson, Ft. Payne, Muscle Shoals
63 at Clanton and Centreville
64 in Concord/Hueytown
65 in Anniston, Tuscaloosa, Heflin, Alexander City
67 in Birmingham and Wedowee

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave was over the NW Caribbean and has
become a little more active since yesterday. Brisk trade winds were
blowing across the entire Caribbean with some gale-force winds off the
coast of Colombia. Surface pressures remain high and a tropical
cyclone is not expected to form from this.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: This is most unusual for July, but on July 7,
1981 Glacier National Park received 10 inches of snow with 90 mph
winds...lowest in the lower 48 this morning was 35 at Meacham, Oregon
and the hottest Thursday was 115 in (you guessed it) Death Valley...in
extreme North Alabama, there is a beautiful place called Walls of
Jericho. Hurricane Creek spills out of those walls and joins Estil
Fork and then it is known as the Paint Rock River. It flows southward
to join the Tennessee River near the community of Paint Rock...Mt.
Washington, New Hampshire gets an average of 247 inches of snow each
winter...Churchill, Manitoba bills itself as the Polar Bear Capitol of
the World. The temperature was in the 60s there this afternoon, so I
imagine the bears were quite comfortable.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A delightful walk with my little
9-pound pal, Miss Molly, this morning. She is well rested after
getting two full night's sleep, so she forced me into a fast-paced
walk—there was no slowing down. I felt like I was driving a
stagecoach. Despite going as fast as my little legs could carry me
keeping up with her for a full 1/2 mile, there was not one drop of
sweat-speration when we got home, thanks to a nice NE breeze coming
down the U.S. 11 valley and a temperature of about 63. Tired to catch
up on some ballgames with Molly today. She had a quick love session
with James Spann when he came by to solve some of my computer
problems. I think Molly must have slept 18 out of the last 24 hours.
She has it made and the whole world loves her. Life goes on.

...A Comfortable July Day...

Unusually dry, continental air will continue to move into Alabama today
following a rare July "cold" front yesterday. With maximum available
sunshine, the mercury will head toward the 90 degree mark this afternoon,
but the humidity values will be very low, making for an unusually
comfortable mid-summer day in Alabama. The dry air will stay in place over
the weekend, so we expect ample sunshine both tomorrow and Sunday. High
temperatures over the weekend should be in the 89 to 92 degree range, about
normal for this time of the year.

NEXT WEEK: Moist air will begin to return next week, and scattered afternoon
showers and storms will be possible again by Tuesday and Wednesday.

AT THE BEACH: The surface front should push into the northern Gulf tomorrow,
so tomorrow should be a nice day along the coast with about 8 to 10 hour of
sunshine and only isolated showers, mainly offshore. Temperatures should
peak in the mid to upper 80s, and the sea water temperatures remain in the
upper 80s just off the Alabama and Northwest Florida Gulf coast. The water
temperature at Pensacola Beach last nightr was 87.6 degrees (F).

TROPICS: We will watch the old front in the northern Gulf this weekend; that
is a favored area for tropical depression development this time of the year.

Elsewhere the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet with only a few weak waves.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: As usual, the distribution of rain was uneven across
Alabama. In Birmingham, there was not enough rain to measure. But, Muscle
Shoals reported 1.56". Other totals included .63" at Demopolis and .45" at
Mitchell Dam (near Clanton).

COOLER NIGHTS—LESS HUMID DAYS: Many places in North and
Central Alabama were left high and dry today, while other areas
received downpours. A cold front (maybe we should say cool front) had
pushed into Central Alabama this afternoon. Near the front, a line of
thunderstorms developed across the central part of the state producing
lots of lightning and heavy downpours. Meanwhile, along the Tennessee
border, the dew point had dropped as low as 59 with brisk north winds
over 20 mph at times and clear skies.

The front will continue to push southward and eventually settle in
along or just south of the Gulf Coast. Even Mobile may feel some
slightly lower humidity by Saturday. Here in North and Central
Alabama, it is going to be mostly sunshine through Sunday with
noticeably lower humidity and pleasantly cool nights. Even the high
temperatures will back off to the 88-92 range. Nighttime lows will be
mostly in the mid 60s, but do not be surprised to hear of some upper
50s in the North Alabama valleys. Not bad for July, which is
traditionally the hottest month of the year. We must mention these
rainfall amounts for the last 24-36 hours to celebrate with folks that
got some good rain:

2.14 in Muscle Shoals
1.20 in DeSoto State Park
0.95 in Collinsville

TROPICAL WEATHER: Clouds and showers over the NW Caribbean and West
Cuba and the Florida Peninsula were being caused by an upper level low
pressure trough. No tropical development.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: An irony in names. An F5 tornado devastated
Storm Lake, Iowa on this date in 1893...we have never heard of a low
temperature above 90 in Alabama, but on July 25, 1936 in an
unprecedented heat wave, the low was 91 at Lincoln, Nebraska and the
high reached 115. During that killer heat wave, numerous Lincoln
resident slept outdoors on the grounds of the state capitol. Remember,
there was very little or no air conditioning...afternoons are finally
getting shorter in Alabama. There is a lag time for that after the
summer solstice...unfortunately, animals cannot protect themselves
during severe weather. On July 5, 1891, a severe hailstorm killed 16
horses at Rapid City, South Dakota...lowest temperatures in the USA
this morning 24 at Truckee, California and 28 at Barrow, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Great half-page story and photograph in
the Birmingham News this morning about the legendary Miss Melissa's
Café in Moundville...even though I was raised near Moundville
(downtown Havana Junction, to be exact), I have never eaten there, but
it will now soar to the top of my list...need to contact my cousins,
Larry and Peggy McCray, who live there to go with us...James Spann
will eventually want to check that out too. He is a connoisseur of
good restaurants (any restaurant)...Little Miss Molly has slept a
record amount in the last 24 hours getting over a 2-night bout with
community fireworks. Great walk early this morning, but she upset
other dogs in at least 4 locations along the half-mile track. All the
dogs seem to love her. Life goes on.

...Showers Mainly This Morning...

A rare July "cold" front will pass through North Alabama this morning, bring
clouds and a few periods of very welcomed rain. By midday, drier air will
move in from the north, and most of the showers and storms will shift down
into South Alabama by afternoon. Because of the clouds and morning showers,
temperatures will be below normal today for a change; most spots will see a
high somewhere between 84 and 89 degrees.

We should be dry tomorrow and Saturday with ample sunshine, lower humidity,
and cooler nighttime temperatures. Most communities will stay dry Sunday as
well, although moisture levels will begin to increase by then.

We will bring back the chance of scattered afternoon showers and storms
early next week as moisture continues to increase.

TROPICAL UPDATE: An upper level low continues to spin away over South
Florida; that feature should move northeast in coming days, near the
Atlantic coast of the U.S. We will also be watching the Gulf of Mexico this
weekend and early next week; the front that is passing through here this
morning will stall and slowly dissipate in the northern Gulf; sometimes that
is a favored area for tropical depression formation this time of the year.
Sea water temperatures are running in the 84 to 88 degree range across much
of the Gulf of Mexico; station PCLF1 at Pensacola Beach reported a water
temperature of 89 degrees last night, about as warm as it gets.

A NICE CHANGE: Yesterday's high in Muscle Shoals was only 77 degrees with
clouds and occasional light rain (their total was 0.30"). The high in
Pinson, about 15 miles northeast of Birmingham, was only 87. Birmingham's
official high was 90 degrees.

FINALLY SOME BENEFICIAL RAIN: We think that much of Alabama will
have the best chance of getting beneficial rain from now well into
Thursday afternoon. While it may not rain over every square mile, a
lot of people will see more rain than they have in recent weeks. Why?
A moisture influx from the west and north, while a cool front now over
NW Tennessee will try to push into North-Central Alabama by daybreak
Thursday. Once again, most of the weather models are friendly with
each other and project the front to eventually try to visit Mobile and
the northern Gulf waters. Showers and thunderstorms were already
increasing across North Alabama this afternoon. They will continue to
spread eastward with the whole system shifting toward the SE. By
tomorrow morning, we may see some 1-inch rainfall amounts with some
places getting more than that due to the slow-moving storms.

Last night some slow-moving thunderstorms dumped over 2 inches of
rain around Vance in East Tuscaloosa County and also in areas of North
Bibb County north of Centreville. Nearly 1 inch fell in Gadsden, 2/3
of an inch in Blount Springs and 0.63 in Greystone Cove.

BEYOND THE RAIN: The combination of increased showers and clouds and
the cool front moving in will hold high temperatures into the mid 80s
Thursday. That is a real break. You will notice a drop in humidity by
Friday with mostly sunshine into the weekend. Nighttime temperatures
will drop as low as 64 early Friday morning.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: This is a new feature starting today. We will
try to run it every weekday afternoon. It will be literally a gumbo
soup of weather notes, climate and geography...we will try to make it
interesting...Death Valley is the only place in the USA that has ever
had nighttime low temperatures above 100. On this date in 1970, they
had a low of 103...they were the hottest spot in the nation yesterday
with 115...Death Valley is 140 miles long and 4 to 6 miles wide and
most of it is below sea level...40 at Lake Tahoe was the coolest this
morning...highs will be around 116 at Basrah, Iraq all this
week...Vostok, Antarctica reporting 95 below zero.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Clouds and showers continue from the Cayman
Islands north across Cuba and the Bahamas. All of this will drift west
across Florida during the next 24 to 36 hours. No threat of tropical
development.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I love Independence Day as much as
anybody, but it is sort of a relief for the firecrackers to be gone.
Little Miss Molly had a nerve-wracking 48 hours. She spent the entire
night under the bed last night. When I would walk through the living
area, she would come out briefly to see if I wanted to play and then
go right back to her safe place. She loves the bed in the guest
bedroom because the dust ruffle comes all the way to the floor. For
much of last night, you could only see the very tip of her tail or the
very tip of her little black nose sticking out. We could not even get
her to go outside for a bathroom break until after midnight. But the
little girl did us a favor and did not have any accidents. Life goes
on beyond firecrackers. We love it all.

...Wetter and Cooler Weather Ahead...

Heat levels are coming down, and rain chances going up across Alabama for
the next two days, a trend that I think most folks will like. Deeper
moisture will be creeping into the state from the west, a surface front is
approaching from the north, and the upper ridge over us is breaking down,
being replaced by an upper trough over the eastern U.S. This should mean a
good chance of scattered showers and storms this afternoon, with the rain
becoming even more widespread tomorrow. Rainfall distribution won't be even,
but some Alabama communities should see one to two inches of rain during the
next 48 hours.
We will forecast a high today just above 90, but the high tomorrow will be
in the mid 80s in most spots due to clouds and showers. The last time the
mercury failed to reach 90 degrees was on June 26 when the high was 89.

The surface front will move down into Central Alabama Thursday night, and
drier air will work into North Alabama by Friday. For now, we expect mostly
sunny days and clear nights Friday through Sunday, with lower humidity
values and comfortable nighttime temperatures.

TOPIC: TROPICS: A westward-moving, broad surface trough and an associated
upper low will move across the Florida peninsula during the next 24 hours
bring occasional rain and gusty winds, but tropical storm formation is not
expected for now. The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet for
now.

ROAMING: New Orleans picked up 1.12" of rain yesterday. In Alabama, our
weather watcher in the western part of Hueytown reported 0.57" of rain from
several showers. Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with a toasty 115 degrees.

5-INCH RAIN SURPLUS: That is exactly what the excess so far this
year is at Birmingham Airport. That is why you have to use rainfall
statistics with a grain of salt and sometimes even a spoonful of salt.
The airport has been especially lucky to be under some of the heavier
showers. Only about 10 miles away at Clay in NE Jefferson County, the
deficit is about 5 inches. The driest part of the state is over the
south and SW, especially around Mobile. They have received only 14.89
inches all year compared to Birmingham with 34.50 inches. The Mobile
shortfall is an incredible 20 inches. That is also in part of the
state where there is still a lot of downed timber from Hurricanes
Ivan, Katrina and Rita—a great fuel source for forest fires.

JULY 4: Untold thousands of people are outdoors today consuming
barbecue and baseball all the way from Havana Junction to New York,
Boston and L.A. Widely spaced thunderstorms had already developed
early this afternoon in Alabama. Those will become a little more
numerous as the afternoon goes on, but most areas will stay dry. Our
chances of getting wet will increase substantially over the next day
or so, especially on Thursday when a cold front tires to force it's
way into North Alabama. We are also looking at an influx of extra
moisture from Mississippi—part of the glob of moisture that moved in
on the Texas coast a couple of days ago.

SOME LOWER HUMIDITY: That happens on Friday and Saturday as the
slightly cooler and drier air spreads across the state from the north.
Low temperatures will be in the mid 60s Friday and Saturday morning
with mostly clear weather. High temperatures will back off to the mid
80s by Thursday due to the increase in clouds and showers.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Showers over the NW Bahamas, due to a low pressure
area aloft, will spread west toward the Florida peninsula in the next
day or so. Tropical development is not expected.

ON THIS SPECIAL HOLIDAY: Let us never forget our military personnel,
especially the ones under the gun in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Temperatures in Baghdad and Basrah will top out between 107 and 118
during the next five days. Can you imagine going through that with all
the heavy stuff soldiers have to lug around? They are keeping our
country free. I especially like a quote in a letter to the editor of
the Birmingham News this morning which said, "To be born free is a
gift, to live free a responsibility, to die free an obligation."

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure am glad my Little Miss Molly is
taking long naps today. She had a frightful afternoon and evening
yesterday and well into last night. People in the community were
popping firecrackers. Molly got so scared that she came in my office
while I was helping record our Weather Brains podcast. She did not
just put her paws up for me to pick her up. She was pounding me on the
leg and shaking with fright. I don't know if Trussville has a law
against fireworks in the city limits like Birmingham, but there were
sure plenty of them going off. I am going to try to be available to
really hold Miss Molly tight and cuddle her tonight. I can't stand to
see her shake with fright. She hides under the bed for long periods of
time during holiday fireworks. Life goes on. —J B Elliott

...Hot as a Firecracker...

The weather in Alabama on the Fourth of July is supposed to be hot, and you
sure won't be disappointed this year. Temperatures again today will rise
into the 95 to 99 degree category statewide, about five to eight degrees
above normal for early July. The day will feature lots of hazy sunshine, and
by early afternoon showers and storms will begin to form in the summer heat.

Like recent days, the afternoon storms should be widely spaced; the chance
of any one spot getting wet today is about one in five. Most of the storms
will be over by fireworks time tonight.

SOME HEAT RELIEF AHEAD: During the mid-week period, we expect to see the
coverage of afternoon showers and storms going up, and afternoon
temperatures going down. The best coverage of scattered showers and storms
most likely will come on Thursday. Then, drier air slips into North Alabama
with little if any chance of rain Friday through the weekend. Humidity
values should be lower at the end of the weeks, and nights a little cooler.
There is a chance many communities will fail to reach 90 degrees on both
Thursday and Friday afternoon.

TROPICAL UPDATE: The Atlantic basin features a few scattered areas of
convection, but the overall pattern does not favor any tropical storm
formation during the next few days.

ONE YEAR AGO: Tropical depression four formed in the Caribbean; this would
later become Hurricane Dennis, making landfall at Santa Rosa Island, Florida

(east of Pensacola) on July 10 as a category 3 storm.

YESTERDAY'S HEAT: Both Tuscaloosa and Calera reached 99 degrees yesterday.
Anniston's official high was 97, while the high at the Birmingham Airport
was 96.

BETTER PROMISES OF RAIN? We could certainly use some. We
received a note from Michael Mills, the 33/40 weather watcher for
Alabaster, reporting that it rained only 3 of the 30 days in June. It
is beginning to look encouraging, but not right away. We still have
some hot, humid, hazy weather to deal with again tomorrow. There will
be an increase in showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday, as a rare
July cool front tries to force itself down into our corner of the
world. The front may squeeze into North Alabama Thursday morning. The
various weather models have been talking to each other and they seem
to agree that the front may possibly push into South Alabama by
Friday. That part is not sealed in stone, but we think that by Friday
the showers will be depressed to extreme South Alabama with less humid
weather over the north. In fact, we are lowering the high temperature
for Thursday and Friday to about 88.

FOURTH OF JULY: Another hot, humid day, but chances of you getting
wet in an afternoon storm is very small. By noon, the temperature will
be in the lower 90s topping out around 96 during the afternoon.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Lots of moisture feeding into coastal Texas and
South Louisiana from that minor disturbance that formed over the SW
Gulf of Mexico. Houston, for example, will get heavy rain at times
through tomorrow. There is a tropical wave spreading showers across
the Lesser Antilles. Upper winds are still not friendly for
development.

AT THE BEACH: Reasonably good weather for the 4th with about a 1 in
5 chance of a thunderstorm for Tuesday and Wednesday, but a better
chance by Thursday.

ELEVATION, ELEVATION: It certainly has a great effect on
temperature. A case in point is that the highest and lowest
temperatures in the lower 48 states in the last 24 hours both occurred
in California. It was 121 in Death Valley and 40 at Lake Tahoe. Did
you know that the highest elevation in the lower 48 states and the
lowest are only 95 air miles apart? Death Valley is 282 feet below sea
level and Mt. Whitney is 14,495 feet above. That is an elevation
change of 14,777 feet in a distance about Birmingham to Montgomery.

OZONE ALERT: A Code Orange was in effect again today for Jefferson
and Shelby Counties.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This little paragraph is reserved for
not only Molly stories, but general opinions. Wanted to brag on my
church, Huffman Baptist, for a tremendous service Sunday morning. It
was a great patriotic service making me more thankful than ever to be
in the good old USA. I have often mentioned that there is only one
creature in the world that has more energy and enthusiasm than Little
Miss Molly. That person is Dennis Altizer, our music director. Thanks
to him, Pastor Tim Lovett and the whole staff for renewing my faith in
my country and the necessity to keep it free. Life goes on.....

...Dog Days Are Here...

GOOD MORNING: That seems obvious to the senses with all the hot weather we
have already been experiencing. But July 3rd marks the official beginning
of the Dog Days of Summer. The Dog Days are named for the Egyptian belief
that during the period of time from July 3 through August 11 when the Dog
Star Sirius rises and falls with the sun, that the star added to the heat of
the Sun It will feel like the Dog Days, especially for the next couple of
days.
HOLIDAY WEATHER: Expect hot and hazy conditions today and tomorrow with
just a small chance of an afternoon or evening thunderstorm both days.

BEYOND THE FOURTH: High pressure will break down on Wednesday allowing
scattered showers and storms and there will be a good chance on Thursday as
a front drifts down into Alabama from the north. This front will stall out
over Central Alabama on Friday, continuing our enhanced shower and storm
chances.

TROPICS: A trough of low pressure over the western Gulf will bring loads of
rain to South Texas today, where Flash Flood Watches are in effect. The
system poses no threat of tropical cyclone development now.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Smoke from the vicious Florida fires spread all the
way into the Florida Straits, to Cuba and even to the Bahamas. Visibility
was down to only one mile in both Havana, Cuba and at Freeport in the
Bahamas. The Pepsi 400 NASCAR race at Daytona was cancelled because of
fires in area. Track officials did not want to put any more pressure on the
already harried local residents.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: An eighteen foot high rogue wave crashes into coast
of Eastern Florida without warning, affecting a twenty seven mile stretch of
coastline from New Smyrna Beach to Ormond Beach. Seventy five people were
injured and 200 cars were damaged.

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: I love the sound of cicadas. They are the sound of summer
to me. I love being outside early on a warm, sunny summer morning. Today
was a textbook version of that.

ISOLATED STORMS: You can tell that the thunderstorm activity was limited on
Saturday. Just check the box score. The state temperature and
precipitation tables tell the story. Rain did not fall at a single official
reporting station in Alabama, Southeast Mississippi or Northwest Florida.
There were a couple of nice little storms over Central Alabama. One over
northeastern Tuscaloosa County during the afternoon and one over western
Jefferson County during the early evening. Both laid down narrow swaths of
decent rainfall.

Storms should be isolated across the area again today. With high
temperatures expected to be in the middle and upper 90s again, we are sure
to reach our convective temperatures. The air aloft is just slightly cooler
than yesterday, so if updrafts can reach the mid levels of the atmosphere,
they may find slightly better going than yesterday. Precipitable water
levels (the amount of moisture available in the atmosphere) are slightly
better than yesterday.

So, if you are lucky enough to find yourself under one, you can expect brief
heavy rainfall amounts that could exceed one inch, dangerous lightning and
some gusty winds, especially as the storms collapse.

TEMPERATURE WATCH: As of 11 .m., temperatures were running a degree behind
yesterday, but dew points were a couple of degrees higher. Interestingly
enough, dewpoints yesterday were only right around 60 degrees, which is not
too high for this time of year. It actually made the afternoon not as
oppressive. Those higher dewpoints might be a factor in forming a couple of
more storms today, in addition to making it feel more humid.

LOOKING AHEAD: The upper level area of high pressure that has been
suppressing storm development for the most part over the past few days will
be with us through at least Tuesday it appears. With the high holding out,
we may see a "ring of fire" of storms surrounding Alabama, while we mainly
stay high and dry. Good news for Fourth of July activities including
barbecues and fireworks, but bad news for most of our lawns. It appears
that the ridge will start to break down on Wednesday. This will allow an
increase of showers and storms, mainly during the afternoon and evening
hours. Then a frontal system will approach Alabama from the north on
Thursday, giving us fairly good shower and storm chances.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994 : A USAir jet crashed near Charlotte NC during a
thunderstorm. The cause of the crash was officially listed as wind shear.
Major efforts to understand and avoid wind shear has resulted in a dramatic
reduction in the number of air accidents involving this deadly phenomenon.

ON THIS DATE IN 1986: Amazingly, an F2 tornado at Jacksonville NC that
killed 3 people was the deadliest twister of the year in 1986 as the United
States experienced only 15 tornado deaths during the year (an all-time low
since records begain in 1916).
