...Starting Over...

GOOD MORNING! I can remember hurricane seasons when we had four named storms. Four. Like 1983. Six several times in my lifetime. But boy, to see 22, that is amazing. Even in the former busiest season, 1933, the W storm formed on November 15th. We are in uncharted territory now. There have never been 22. And there are still 39 days in this season.

QUICK CHECK ON TROPICS: Hurricane Wilma is setting her sights on Southwest Florida. It will be there before tomorrow morning. Preparations are pretty much done in the Keys and across the Peninsula. Tropical Storm Alpha weakened overnight as it transited the island of Hispaniola. It is emerging back over the water headed north northwest toward the Bahamas. It will merge with a frontal system. More on the tropics in Weather Talk. .

OUR FORECAST: Hey! Someone left the back door open! Too late...front number one brought us cooler air and lots of cloudiness that was slow to burn off yesterday. Areas where the sun returned warmed well into the 60s and low 70s. After morning lows in the 40s and a little patchy fog/clouds, with some stratocumulus clouds. A second cold front will arrive late in the day, accompanied by some thicker cloudiness. There could also be a few sprinkles with this front, but don’t look for much in the way of precip. Dewpoints will be dropping behind the second front, and lows tonight will be 5-7 degrees cooler than last night. Some areas will dip into the upper 30s tonight, although a brisk breeze will help prevent widespread frost. Monday will feature sun and lot s of those stratocumulus clouds. There will also be a brisk north wind as the pressure gradient tightens between high pressure over the Midwest and Wilma passing to our Southeast. Upper disturbance rotating over the area may bring period of clouds Monday night and Tuesday. We can’t rule out a shower or two. The upper low over the Ohio Valley will move out and big high pressure will take its place by midweek.

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: It wasn’t raining cats and dogs, but rather fish that fell from the sky in Marksville, Louisiana. Thousands of fish fell.

GOOD AFTERNOON: If you said that Hurricane Wilma was but a shadow of her
former record breaking self this afternoon, that would be an accurate
statement. But it would not accurately portray the relentless pounding that
Wilma has been delivering to the Yucatan Peninsula. I don't have the
benefit of any official observations, but I would not be surprised to find
out that the island of Cozumel has been experiencing hurricane force winds
since early Friday morning. Hopefully, that will end soon.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: A clearing line is advancing southeastward
across Alabama. Expect a clear, chilly night tonight. We will see a few
30s in colder locations tonight, along with some scattered frost, but most
places will be in the 40s. Cold air stratocumulus clouds will be plentiful
on Sunday, but there will be some sunshine. Look for temperatures to rise
into the middle to upper 60s at most locations. Another front will bring a
reinforcing shot of cold air late on Sunday. This front will be accompanied
by low clouds as well as sprinkle or two and some stronger northerly winds.
Those winds may keep a widespread frost from happening Sunday night, but
temperatures will be cold with 30s and 40s commonplace. Monday night will
be cold also. Cooler than normal weather should prevail the rest of the
week.

BACK TO WILMA: Now we get ready for Act II of Wilma's traveling road show.
The hurricane has weakened a good bit, but still is packing a Category Two
punch as it gets ready to emerge back over the Gulf of Mexico. Wilma will
strengthen somewhat as it turns to the northeast ahead of the developing
upper level trough over the eastern United States. Look for Wilma to
reclaim her major hurricane status tonight or tomorrow. Wilma should
encounter increasing wind shear over the southeastern Gulf and should be
weakening as it approaches the Florida Peninsula. Landfall will come Monday
morning over SW Florida. At that time, Wilma should be a Category Two
hurricane with max winds around 105 mph. We can't rule out that it might be
a Category Three storm then. It will accelerate northeastward, crossing the
Peninsula in just three or four hours and racing out over the open Atlantic.
The Atlantic version of Wilma will be a formidable storm.

AND NOW: We knew this was going to be an active hurricane season. It
became quickly apparent that we might have a record breaking season. And it
appears that the all time record for tropical storms will be broken shortly
when TD 25 becomes Tropical Storm Alpha in the Central Caribbean. How many
letters are there in the Greek alphabet? Just checking.TD25/TS Alpha will
cross the island of Hispaniola (Haiti/Dominican Republic) on Sunday then
over the islands of the southeastern Bahamas Sunday night. It will be
interesting to see the interaction between Wilma, the big trough and this
system.

TWO ALABAMA CLIMATE NOTES: Back in 1884, this was the final day of a two
month rainless spell at Tuscaloosa AL that lasted from August 28 through
October 22nd comes to an end as Southeast suffers through terrible drought.
And in 1987, 23 degrees at Pinson and 28 at the Birmingham Airport are
both the coldest readings on record for so early in the season.

...Watching Wilma...

GOOD MORNING: Two mains stories in the weather world this weekend.
Locally, it is the fairly dramatic change to cooler behind a cold front that
moved through the area yesterday. In the tropics, Hurricane Wilma is
dominating the headlines, dealing a devastating blow to the Yucatan
Peninsula.

CHANGE TO COOLER: Cold front number one pushed through the area overnight.
A surprisingly significant line of showers and storms moved across the area
during the late afternoon hours, even prompting a severe thunderstorm
warning. A few light showers occurred over northern sections of the area
during the overnight. Low clouds have filled in overnight in the advancing
cooler air. Those low clouds will hang tough today, although some sun will
break out by mid afternoon. You can expect more of the same tomorrow, but
with perhaps a little more sun. Temperatures will struggle to reach the
middle 60s today and the upper 60s on Sunday. A second front will arrive on
Sunday night, ushering in more cold air. By Tuesday morning, we will see 30s
across much of North and Central Alabama, with a widespread frost possible.
Temperatures will remain below seasonal levels throughout much of the coming
week. Readings on a couple of afternoons may not even reach 60.

WILMA: Hurricane Wilma spent Friday night battering the coast of the
northeastern Yucatan. Wilma will move slowly over the northeast tip of the
Yucatan, emerging later on Sunday. The storm is already much weaker because
of the interaction. Wilma will gradually turn northeast ahead of a
developing deep
trough and move toward Southwest Florida, It should reach there Monday as a
Category One or Category Two hurricane The latest in Today's Weather Talk.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Mitch formed over the warm waters of the western
Caribbean. . Mitch would go on to become one of the biggest natural
disasters ever in the Western Hemisphere. The hurricane killed over 11,000
people, making it the second deadliest Atlantic hurricane of record.

SAY GOODBYE TO THE 80S: The late season daytime warmth has been
tenacious but finally the old thermometer is headed south where it should be
this time of year. Sure, we can still have some more 80 degree weather but
not anytime soon.

The cold front was moving eastward across Alabama this afternoon. It
could trigger a few showers through this evening but most areas should
remain dry. A line of showers had formed by 2 pm from east of Birmingham NE
to Dekalb County in NE Alabama. The showers were moving eastward. Some heavy
showers noated near Gadsden.

Unfortunately, most areas will remain dry. Many parts of the state
are approaching two weeks without rain.

You will really start feeling the cooler air Saturday and over the
weekend. Brisk north winds will accompany high temperatures only in the
upper 60s tomorrow as compared to 80s on most days recently. Another cold
front will replenish our cooler air later. We think Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday will be our coolest. See our day-by-day.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games and also the
Southern Miss-UAB game at Legion Field, there will be a slight risk of a
shower but most areas dry. Temperatures will be around 70 at kickoff and
about 62 at the final whistle. For the Alabama-Tennessee game at Tuscaloosa
Saturday afternoon, dry cool weather with near 68 for the 2:30 kickoff
dropping to about 60 at game's end. Auburn plays LSU in Baton Rouge in a
6:45 pm game. It should be clear, near 70 but falling through the 60s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: It's all about Wilma. We believe that major
damage is underway this afternoon in the Cozumel-Cancun areas of the Yucatan
Peninsula. She was moving ever-so slowly and this will give her time to tear
up a lot more property. Massive flash-flooding is also likely. Wilma may
hang around for the weekend. Then she is expected to start NE in a weakened
state toward South Florida late Monday. Not sealed in stone by any means.
Stay tuned. The circulation around Wilma has become so large that swells
were affecting areas as far north as the Alabama-Northwest Florida Coast
where a High Surf Advisory was in effect. Unless something unusual happens,
we don't think that Alabama will be directly affected.

USA EXTREMES: It was 94 in Laredo Thursday. Lows this morning
included 17 in both Stanley, Idaho and Northway, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When Little Miss Molly and I spend so
much time alone, I believe we bond even more if that is possible. Last
night, she slept at the foot of my king-size bed. She always sleeps in a
tight circle. She awoke me before my automatic 5 o'clock wakeup time, walked
up to be and said "woof-woof" Translation: time to go for a walk. Her tiny
nose was almost touching mine. I turned the flashlight on and I could see
those bright little eyes looking directly into mine with a real wishful
look. Translation: I am under bondage to that little girl and away we went.
After quickly getting dressed, of course. Coffee can wait. Molly needs to go
to the bathroom. Life goes on..

...Much Cooler Air Arrives Tomorrow...

Looks like today will be the last day for highs in the 80s here for the
foreseeable future. A cold front passes through late today, and will bring a
sharp change to cooler weather for the weekend. Any showers on the front
this evening should be isolated, and many places will remain dry.
The weekend will feature plenty of clouds along with a cool breeze and
temperatures struggling to reach the mid 60s. A secondary shot of chilly air
rolls in here Sunday night, and we could very well hold in the 50s all day
Monday.

We still expect a good potential for the first widespread frost of the
season by Wednesday morning of next week.

WILMA: Catastrophic damage is possible along the coast of the Yucatan
peninsula today as the big hurricane creeps through places like Cozumel and
Cancun. Wilma will be at least a category four, possibly a five, as she
moves into the coast this morning. Some of the computer models keep Wilma
over the peninsula for the next two days, which could lead to rain totals of
20 to 30 inches leading to flooding of Biblical proportion.

The interaction with land will greatly weaken the system as it kicks
northeast toward southern Florida late Sunday or Monday.

FOOTBALL: Just a slight chance of a shower for tonight's UAB-Southern Miss
game (7:00 kickoff) with a kickoff temperature of 76 degrees. Cloudy and
cool weather for tomorrow's Bama-Tennessee game in Tuscaloosa. The kickoff
temperature (2:30 p.m.) should be near 65 degrees, dropping into the upper
50s by the end of the game. In Baton Rouge for the Auburn-LSU game tomorrow
evening (6:45 p.m. kickoff), a clear sky with about 70 degrees at kickoff,
falling through the 60s during the game.

COOL AIR HEADED SOUTH: We have been gradually heating up for the
last several days. Afternoon temperatures in the 80s are too warm for this
time of year by about 10 degrees.

While most of our attention is turned south for obvious reasons, we
are also looking north and we see a nice push of cooler air headed south.
Cooler air already covers much of North Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and
Missouri.

The cold front will reach Central Alabama late Friday. It appears we
will not get much rain with this front. However, could be some scattered
light showers. Many areas will remain dry.

By Saturday we should have a marked change to cooler. While we are
expecting low 80s Friday, our highs on Saturday will stay in the upper 60s
with clouds in and out and brisk NW winds. As an upper level disturbance
passes to our north, it may shoot some cloudiness down into North and
Central Alabama Sunday and Monday. Monday should be one of our coolest days
in a long time with lows around 42 and highs near 60. Up in the Tennessee
Valley and also in places like Hamilton, Cullman and Fort Payne, highs
Monday will not get out of the 50s.

WILD, WILD WILMA: She remained a Category 4 hurricane this afternoon
with sustained winds around 145 mph. It looks more and more like she will
move onshore on the east side of the Yucatan Peninsula, There are some
indications that she will fool around there for awhile. Then, a NE track is
forecast bringing Wilma across South Florida late Sunday or Sunday night.

Wilma is going to dump lots of rain with 10 to 20 inches over parts
of Western Cuba and on Yucatan. Indeed, there is a chance that some of the
higher terrain of Western Cuba could get 40 inches! Translation: Major life
threatening flash floods and mud slides.

Governor Bush has already declared a state of emergency in the
threatened areas of Florida.

HERE AND THERE: Would you believe there may be some snow flurries
above 3500 feet in the Great Smoky Mountains Sunday night? Cold spots today
included 22 at Embarrass, Minnesota and 5 above in Deadhorse, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is pretty much queen
of my tiny corner. I am trying to let her be the boss this week while her
human mommy recovers from knee surgery. (She is doing great and will be home
from Medical Center East in a few days. Thanks for all the good wishes, very
much appreciated.) I have tried to give Molly some extra cuddling and loving
so she will not feel neglected. But, my gosh, she never gets too much
attention according to her. I have doubled the ballgame time with her. Yet,
each time I walk through the house she is ready to play again. She has now
learned to chase the ball, grab it and run half way back to me and then
sling the ball with her mouth toward me. I kick it again and it is all
repeated many times over. I feel like a little robot but life goes on. I
still love the little 9-pounder!

...Hurricane Fatigue Setting In...

When will it ever end? Hurricane season, that is. Officially it ends at the
end of November but clearly this year has been an overkill. People along the
Gulf Coast are extremely wary.

Now we have Wilma, the last name on the 2005 list and she is definitely no
pushover.

We hope you will check in on our weather blog especially when Wilma gets
closer to the USA. We will have frequent updates and lots of extra
information.
Late Wednesday night, Wilma actually had a slight demotion to a Category 4.
However, she may intensify again to Category 5 today. She was centered about
235 miles SE of Cozumel, Mexico with sustained winds down slightly to 155
mph. That still makes her a devastating hurricane.
The latest track forecast has not changed much. After skirting the Yucatan
she is expected to curve NE and pass across the south part of the Florida
Peninsula Saturday night and early Sunday. Keep in close touch with this
one.

ALABAMA AFFECTED?: Unlikely unless Wilma fails to get picked up by a low
pressure trough aloft. Then all bets are off. We do have a couple of cold
fronts that will move toward Alabama. Due to a low aloft passing to our
north, we could very well have a band of clouds swinging down this way
beginning on Saturday. It will be a lot cooler with highs dropping back to
the mid and upper 60s.

Meanwhile, with mostly sunshine, it will be unseasonably warm today with
highs in the mid and upper 80s. That's about 14 degrees too warm for October
20. Very little rain expected.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: With my wife in the hospital (total knee
replacement) I am having to spend extra time with Little Miss Molly. She
clearly knows when one of us is missing and she acts differently. Last
night, when I can home from the hospital, she jumped with joy to see me,
then looked sad when a second person did not come in the garage door. She
had four half mile walks Wednesday. She and I are pooped.

A RED LETTER DAY: When an Air Force reconnaissance Hurricane Hunter plane
flew into Wilma early this morning over the western Caribbean, the monstrous
storm had been deepening at a dizzying rate for twenty four hours. The
central pressure measurements had been dropping like a rock, falling nearly
one hundred millibars in that time frame. The crew measured a barometric
reading of 894 millibars from a dropsonde, but estimated an even lower
pressure of 881 millibars. By the time all of the data was calibrated and
confirmed, the National Hurricane Center confirmed that we had a new
all-time record low pressure for an Atlantic Hurricane. The new top 6:

Wilma (2005) 882 millibars
Gilbert (1988) 888 millibars
Labor Day Storm (1935) 892 millibars
Rita (2005) 897 millibars
Allen (1980) 899 millibars
Katrina (2005) 902 millibars

TOP STORY: Suffice to say, Wilma is a Category Five monster. The
hurricane had an unbelievably tight eye, ranging in diameter from 2-4
nautical miles. I'll bet the Hurricane Hunters had a tough time staying
inside such a tight radius. This morning, the hurricane will likely undergo
cycles, with weakening followed by another period of intensification. The
hurricane will gradually turn more to the northwest and northwest as it
heads for the channel between the Yucatan and western Cuba, where Hurricane
Watches are in effect. It should then turn abruptly to the northeast ahead
of an approaching upper level trough and head for southern Florida. Our
friends along the Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Northwest Florida
coasts appear to be safe at this time, but we are dealing with a hurricane,
so all interests around the Gulf need to pay attention. Also, Wilma will
generate very strong swells all the way across the Gulf, and places like
Gulf Shores, Pensacola, Destin and Panama City will experience dangerous
riptides and rough surf this weekend. Southwest Florida will not be so
lucky, with landfall expected to come Saturday night south of Tampa. The
Fort Myers areas appears to be the most likely target. Wilma should weaken
some before then, but will still be a major Category Three hurricane. It
will cross the Peninsula and could impact New England early next week.
Remember 1938..

OUR WEATHER: Wilma will have no effect on our weather. Look for another
fine night tonight and day tomorrow. A broad trough of low pressure
advancing out of the Southwest will drive a cold front our way by Friday.
This front will bring a few showers to the area Friday and Friday night.
Temperatures will be falling back behind the front, and Friday night might
be unpleasant for the high school games. In fact, conditions all weekend
will be quite a shock after our extended warmth, with lots of low clouds, a
few light showers or some drizzle, and a biting north wind. Temperatures on
Saturday will be in the 60s at best over much of the area, and could very
well not get out of the 50s on Sunday or Monday. The clouds should hang
tough for much of the weekend, but when they break, probably Monday or
Tuesday morning, there could be a widespread frost across the area.

...A Weekend Chill Ahead...

While our short term forecast does highlight unseasonably warm afternoons, we are looking at a big change to cooler weather for Alabama and the deep south over the coming weekend.
While high temperatures will reach the mid 80s today and tomorrow, we will struggle to reach the mid 60s on Saturday and Sunday with clouds and a cool north breeze. A few scattered showers are possible along the cold front Friday night and Saturday morning, but rain amounts should be relatively light and spotty.

There is a chance that many north Alabama communities will have their first frost of the season around the middle of next week.

TROPICS: Hurricane Wilma is expected to become a very dangerous category four hurricane over the northwest Caribbean during the next 24 hours. The system is forecast to take a right turn over the extreme southern Gulf of Mexico Friday, which will take it into the southern part of Florida over the weekend. The latest projections suggest landfall near, or perhaps just south of Fort Myers Saturday night. Then, Wilma comes out into the Atlantic Sunday somewhere between Melbourne and Fort Lauderdale. Wilma should be a category two or three hurricane at the time of landfall.

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS DAY: Today is fall severe weather awareness day in Alabama, a reminder that we have a secondary season of severe storms and tornadoes in November and early December. Be sure you have a NOAA Weather Radio receiver in your home so you can get tornado warnings, and have a plan of action for you and your family.

AN OCTOBER CHILL: Coldest place in the nation yesterday morning was the community of Embarrass, MN with 17 degrees.

A WARMING TREND FOR NOW: Afternoons are gradually warming up and by Wednesday and Thursday the highs across Central Alabama should be in the 84 to 87-degree range. That is more than 10 degrees warmer than normal for this part of October. Nights will still be pleasantly cool, but not as chilly as the last two nights.

Rain still looks quite scarce, but as a cold front approaches late Friday, we could see a few showers late Friday afternoon or Friday night. A few of those will still be around Saturday morning, but not many. That cold front is going to bring a brisk change to cooler over the weekend. Highs on Saturday might not reach the 70-degree mark and highs on Sunday will only be in the upper 60s. A low pressure area aloft will be to our north over the weekend. There is a good chance that will spread some cool air stratocumulus down across the northern part of the state.

WILMA PROMOTED: It was just a matter of time so Wilma was upgraded to a hurricane at midday. She may become a major hurricane over the NW Caribbean with sustained winds as high as 120 mph. Over the next several days, check our blog for updates. The latest official track forecast brings the center NW through the Western Caribbean passing just west of the western tip of Cuba early Friday. By late Saturday, landfall is projected on the SW coast of Florida near or south of Ft. Myers. By late Saturday night or early Sunday, she should pass between West Palm Beach and Ft. Pierce and out into the Atlantic. A very large dose of caution: the above paragraph sounds too specific. Actually the cone of concern covers all of the Florida Peninsula from the Apalachicola/Tallahassee area all the way down to the Keys.

NON-HURRICANE STUFF: Big concern in the Greater Boston area today because it appeared that a dam would break in the town of Taunton. Much of that town has been evacuated. By the way that is where the National Weather Service for Boston is located….big problems on the opposite coast also with flash flooding in Southern California and parts of Arizona and Nevada. A number of places in the heart of the desert, over 1.50 inches of rain in the last 24 hours...cold spots this morning, West Yellowstone, Montana and Arctic Village, Alaska—9 above.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly sure does vary her sleeping hours. Even though I kept her up until after midnight, she was awake at the crack of dawn. We had so many play sessions yesterday that she was totally wiped out. Yet, she was ready to play 45 seconds after she woke up this morning…out walking again, even before the hint of daylight...another walk at mid morning and she was beside herself when she met Jo-Jo coming down the track. They ran round and round in circles and chased each other...on an afternoon walk yesterday, Molly got to visit with four different people that live on this street—all of them great Molly fans. She definitely knows the people that love her most and she does a super job of returning the love. A little diplomat. Life goes on.

...Warm Afternoons Ahead...

Afternoons will be increasingly warmer across Alabama during the next few
days, with most communities reaching the mid 80s, about ten degrees above
normal for mid-October. The air will remain very dry and there is no chance
of rain here through Thursday.

Our next opportunity for a few showers will come Friday night or Saturday
morning, thanks to a passing cold front. At this point it does not look like
a major rain event due to limited moisture. Following that front, much
cooler air will roll into the state this weekend. Looks like we might stay
in the 60s all day Saturday with a chilly north breeze. Early morning
temperatures should go down in the 40s by Sunday and Monday.

WILMA: This tropical storm in the Caribbean should become a major hurricane
during the next 36 hours as it moves slowly westward through the Caribbean.
Wilma is forecast to turn to the northeast by the end of the week in
response to the upper trough passing through the southeast U.S., and at this
point the greatest risk seems to be over the southern third of Florida.
Places like Port Charlotte or Fort Myers could be directly under the gun
during the coming weekend. At this point the risk to the central Gulf coast
looks very minimal.

WHAT A WARM-UP: The mercury warmed up 40 degrees in Anniston yesterday, from
a morning low of 39 to an afternoon high of 79. This, of course, means the
air is very dry.

IT DOES RAIN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: Heavy rain was responsible for a
mudslide along I-5 yesterday; hail up to one inch in diameter was reported
in Pasadena. Burbank reported a rain total of 1.49", while LAX Airport
measured 0.55".

WARMER AFTERNOONS: You would think by looking outdoors that this is
the easiest forecast we have had in a long, long time. Not necessarily true.
It is an easy forecast weather wise, but not on the old thermometer. The
reason is much warmer air not far off the ground which could mix down to the
ground and ruin our high temperature forecast. Indeed, one of our most
trusted weather models (ugh) is calling for a high of 92 Wednesday. We do
not believe that will happen, but it is not totally out of the question. We
think it will be more like 86. We will still have some fairly cool nights,
but not as cool as last night.

Down the road we look for a cold front to approach this area early
Saturday. This could set off a few showers late in the day Friday or Friday
night and extending into early Saturday. It does not look like a big rain
event at all and most communities could remain dry.

THE NICE MORNING CHILL: I was out walking before daylight and it
sure did feel good. It was the coolest morning since last spring over most
of the state. In NE Alabama at Black Creek in Etowah County, the first light
frost of the season covering about 40 percent of the ground. That was also
one of the coolest spots in the state. Let's look at some selected lows:

36 at Black Creek and Hartselle
37 at Ft. Payne, Munford, Hamilton, Meridianville
38 in Pinson and Oak Grove (Jefferson County)
39 in Anniston, Huntsville, Gadsden, De Soto St. Park
40 in Moulton, Madison, Wedowee, Helena, Jasper
43 in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Livingston, Wadley
44 in Montgomery, Inverness, Guntersville

TROPICAL WEATHER: Here we are with another named tropical storm
which ties the record set in 1933 and using the last name on the list for
the 2005 season. If another one forms, the NHC will resort to the Greek
alphabet and name it Alpha.

It is early in the game and the future path of Tropical Storm Wilma
is not sealed in concrete. The NHC says that early guidance on this one is
unusually uncertain. This afternoon, Wilma was moving slowly but gaining
strength and was centered about 235 miles SSE of Grand Cayman. She drifted
south during the morning, but should gradually turn west. The official track
forecast brings the center to near the NE tip of the Yucatan Peninsula by
late Friday and into the Southern Gulf by Saturday. Most opinions are that
the northern Gulf Coast (NW Florida to Louisiana) should not be affected.
Could be a Florida Peninsula event. Remember, not certain! She should be a
hurricane by tomorrow..

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Might as well put one of those
electronic ankle braces on me and give Little Miss Molly the monitor. She
has followed me like a shadow since I got home late yesterday after being
gone most of two days. I may have to move the coffee pot in my office
because every time I go for a fresh cup, she ambushes me with her favorite
ball already in her mouth ready to play...I sure had a great time Sunday at
Havana Methodist Church in Hale County. That is the church that my sister
and I used to walk to each Sunday from Havana Junction two miles away.
Yesterday was "homecoming" and I saw some old friends that I had not seen in
50 years. Ran into some real Miss Molly fans including Marion Hallmark and
Charlotte Barton from Tuscaloosa. Mary Ann and Ed Avery also big Molly fans.
Have known them from way back. Some of the greatest people on earth in that
part of the world. Life goes on regardless of how much I play with Molly!

...More Sunshine And Too Dry...

There are places in West Central Alabama where only about one-tenth of an
inch of rain has fallen in the first 16 days of October.

October is normally our driest month of the year and we have experienced
some great droughts this time of year. Looks like very little chance of rain
for most of the coming week. Another cold front may approach the area late
Friday and early Saturday. We could see some showers and possibly a few
thunderstorms along that front. At this time, it does not appear to be a
widespread rain event.

The BIG QUESTION, however, is what may become Hurricane Wilma and her future
path. Late last night it was still a tropical depression and moving ever so
slowly. It was located about 150 miles SE of Grand Cayman and moving WNW at
only 2 mph. The track forecast from the National Hurricane Center moves it
very slowly through Tuesday. It may become a hurricane by then. After that
the favored track brings in between the western tip of Cuba and the Yucatan
Peninsula into the SE Gulf of Mexico by next Friday. Beyond that it is
rather uncertain. We will have to wait and see if it curves more toward
Florida or moves more northward.

LOOKING ELSEWHERE: Heating up in the Desert Southwest again. It got up to
95 Sunday in Death Valley. The coldest was 21 at Stanley, Idaho and West
Yellowstone, Montana...sure would like to be atop Mt. Washington, New
Hampshire at this time. They received 3.46 inches of rain in the 24 hours
ending Sunday evening. Their high temperature was only 31 and the low 28. It
is likely they have some glaze or snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Spent most of Saturday at Briarwood
Presbyterian Church for the Storm Alert Extreme (some great information).
Then Sunday, I spent all day down in West Alabama. Bottom line-poor Little
Miss Molly did not have any playtime with me. I will for sure start a pay
back today. She always knows when I am going to leave because she follows me
every step with the forlorn look. She sure knows how to make me feel guilty.
Life goes on.

OHHHH...OCTOBER: Great October weather continues across Alabama on this
Sunday, but we want to highlight a high fire danger this afternoon and keep
an eye on a potentially major tropical cyclone over the western Caribbean
than could be a player in our forecasts later.

RED FLAG WARNING TODAY: A Red Flag Warning means conditions are favorable
for explosive fire development across Central Alabama. Dry vegetation and
moderate winds could make any fire get out of control quickly. Avoid all
outdoor burning today.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Clear and comfortable conditions across Alabama
this morning. A Perfect Weather Warning is in effect for today across the
area, so get out and enjoy it. The same great weather will continue through
Thursday. Temperatures will start getting a little on the warm side by
midweek. The next rain chance comes on Friday as a front approaches and
Wilma perhaps becomes player in our weather.

WILMA? TD #24 is slowly getting better organized in the western Caribbean
Sea about 200 miles southeast of Grand Cayman. It should become TS Wilma
later today. It is stuck in an area of weak steering currents. It will
continue to intensify, likely becoming a major hurricane over the next three
days. As that shortwave trough moves across the Central U.S. by midweek, it
will weaken the ridge over the South enough to allow the hurricane to enter
the southeastern Gulf by the end of the week. Overnight runs of the GFS
model paint a bad scenario for the Tampa Bay area and southwestern Florida,
both very vulnerable to hurricanes. The storm is expected to steadily and
maybe even rapidly intensify, becoming a major hurricane. If the storm does
get very far into the southeastern Gulf, it could spread clouds and showers
our way, especially over southeastern sections of the area.

NORTHEAST RAINS: The Big Apple is just a hair away from establishing a new
record for its wettest October ever at Central Park. 13.25 inches of rain
has fallen so far this month, just 0.06 inches short of the all time record.
16.67 inches of rain fell at the NWS office in Upton, NY during the eight
day storm. Several Northeast stations have already registered all-time
October rainfalls, including Providence RI (12.27), Hartford CT (13.12), and
Worcester MA (12.30.)

ON THIS DATE IN 1862: The Confederate raider CSS Alabama passed through
the eye of a hurricane about 600 miles east of Cape Cod. Admiral Raphael
Semmes wrote that the barometer fell to 28.64 inches and then the ship
passed into the calm. He would write: "The aspects of the heavens was
appalling. The clouds were writhing and twisting, like so many huge
serpents engaged in combat and hung so low in the thin air of the vortex, as
almost to touch the mast-heads." Although it sustained heavy damage, the
Alabama was still afloat after its rare encounter.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: The first GOES satellite was launched. GOES
satellites remain in a stationary orbit some 22,300 miles above the same
location on the Earth giving meteorologists a constant view of the same
regions of the Earth so that they can monitor the formation, location and
movement of cloud systems.
