OHHHH...OCTOBER: Great October weather continues across Alabama on this
Sunday, but we want to highlight a high fire danger this afternoon and keep
an eye on a potentially major tropical cyclone over the western Caribbean
than could be a player in our forecasts later.

RED FLAG WARNING TODAY: A Red Flag Warning means conditions are favorable
for explosive fire development across Central Alabama. Dry vegetation and
moderate winds could make any fire get out of control quickly. Avoid all
outdoor burning today.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Clear and comfortable conditions across Alabama
this morning. A Perfect Weather Warning is in effect for today across the
area, so get out and enjoy it. The same great weather will continue through
Thursday. Temperatures will start getting a little on the warm side by
midweek. The next rain chance comes on Friday as a front approaches and
Wilma perhaps becomes player in our weather.

WILMA? TD #24 is slowly getting better organized in the western Caribbean
Sea about 200 miles southeast of Grand Cayman. It should become TS Wilma
later today. It is stuck in an area of weak steering currents. It will
continue to intensify, likely becoming a major hurricane over the next three
days. As that shortwave trough moves across the Central U.S. by midweek, it
will weaken the ridge over the South enough to allow the hurricane to enter
the southeastern Gulf by the end of the week. Overnight runs of the GFS
model paint a bad scenario for the Tampa Bay area and southwestern Florida,
both very vulnerable to hurricanes. The storm is expected to steadily and
maybe even rapidly intensify, becoming a major hurricane. If the storm does
get very far into the southeastern Gulf, it could spread clouds and showers
our way, especially over southeastern sections of the area.

NORTHEAST RAINS: The Big Apple is just a hair away from establishing a new
record for its wettest October ever at Central Park. 13.25 inches of rain
has fallen so far this month, just 0.06 inches short of the all time record.
16.67 inches of rain fell at the NWS office in Upton, NY during the eight
day storm. Several Northeast stations have already registered all-time
October rainfalls, including Providence RI (12.27), Hartford CT (13.12), and
Worcester MA (12.30.)

ON THIS DATE IN 1862: The Confederate raider CSS Alabama passed through
the eye of a hurricane about 600 miles east of Cape Cod. Admiral Raphael
Semmes wrote that the barometer fell to 28.64 inches and then the ship
passed into the calm. He would write: "The aspects of the heavens was
appalling. The clouds were writhing and twisting, like so many huge
serpents engaged in combat and hung so low in the thin air of the vortex, as
almost to touch the mast-heads." Although it sustained heavy damage, the
Alabama was still afloat after its rare encounter.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: The first GOES satellite was launched. GOES
satellites remain in a stationary orbit some 22,300 miles above the same
location on the Earth giving meteorologists a constant view of the same
regions of the Earth so that they can monitor the formation, location and
movement of cloud systems.
