...Scattered Showers and Storms...

The calendar says late October, but the weather will feel more like June
today with warm and humid conditions and the chance of scattered showers and
thunderstorms. Temperatures will touch 80 degrees again this afternoon in
many Alabama communities. Showers should thin out tomorrow as the air
becomes slightly drier.

THE WEEKEND: A cold front will approach the Alabama/Tennessee border
Saturday night and stall out. This means the best chance of showers over the
weekend will be across the Tennessee Valley of extreme north Alabama. It
also means that temperatures will stay rather warm.

Early next week, a major fall storm is expected to develop over the nation's
breadbasket, which will swing a vigorous cold front through here Monday
night. This could be a set-up for strong or severe storms for the northern
half of Alabama Monday night. The storms will move rapidly out of the state
after midnight Monday night, and at this time we expect a dry and noticeably
cooler Election Day for Alabama, with a clearing sky, a cool breeze, and
afternoon temperatures only in the 60s. There is a good chance we will be in
the 40s by Wednesday morning.

THE LONG RANGE: Another significant storm system shows up toward the end of
next week, which could mean more strong storms about 8 days from now. Bottom
line is that the first half of November is looking stormy at times with
volatile temperature changes.

CALIFORNIA SNOW: A weather station in the central Sierra reports that 48
inches of snow has fallen there this month, the most for October since
record-keeping began at the site in 1945.

PRIME TIME: Join us for Storm Alert XTREME tonight at 7:00 on ABC 33/40!

MILD WEATHER CONTINUES: It is more like late May or even early June across
the Alabama landscape and we don't see any significant change to colder
temperatures although it will turn cooler early next week. Trying to
determine if it will rain and how many showers is rather difficult, but we
can't rule out a shower or a thunderstorm any day through the weekend.
Scattered showers and storms are expected Thursday with a lesser chance on
Friday. Probably our best chance will be late Saturday, Saturday night and
extending into Sunday. On Sunday, the better chance may be north of
Birmingham. See our day-by-day forecast. Latest indications are that
election day will be dry.

TONIGHT'S TOTAL ECLIPSE: While there may be some cloudiness this evening,
we think there will be a good chance to see the total lunar eclipse later
tonight. It begins at 8:14 CDT and reaches total at 9:23. The total eclipse
will end at 10:45 and the entire show will be over at 11:54. So, we will
have one hour and 22 minutes of total eclipse. The next one won't be until
2007.

OTHER EVENTS: Jason Wright, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the
NWS, reminds us that today was Severe Weather Awareness Day. We are rapidly
approaching our "secondary" severe weather season which is in November and
well into December. For the last several years, it has been our main
season...don't forget the one-hour special Thursday night on ABC 33/40
emphasizing some of Alabama's worst tornadoes and Storm Alert Xtreme at the
Civic Center in downtown Birmingham Saturday between 9:30 and 3:30.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: That is a major storm affecting the Western USA.
Heavy snow already covers the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah with 28
inches of snow already on the ground at Farmington between Salt Lake and
Ogden. An additional 1 to 2 feet will fall in the next 24 hours and in some
areas as much as 3 more feet. The NWS in Salt Lake warns that this is a
major winter storm and will be accompanied by strong winds...already 2 feet
of new snow on the ground at Big Bear Lake east of San Diego and 14 to 20
inches of snow expected in the Southern Nevada mountains...USA cold spots
this morning: 14 at Lake Tahoe and zero at Arctic Village, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: He was a beautiful solid white little dog only
slightly larger than little Miss Molly. He was new to our community and
lived on the other side of the thick hedgerow north of our walking track. He
was full of energy just like Molly. She got to rub noses with him one time
and it looked like love at first sight.but most of the time she could see
him through the thick hedgerow running rapidly across two big backyards.
Molly would frantically try to find an opening in the hedgerow to go play
with him. He was run over by a car a couple of days ago and hasn't been
seen since. On our walk early this morning, Molly again poked her head as
deep into the hedgerow as possible to try to get a glimpse of him. It is a
sad story, but life goes on. I believe dogs and other animals have very warm
emotional feelings just like us. Molly will occasionally plop down
overlooking the back yard where the big 90 pound Black Lab, Grady, used to
live lived waiting to see him. Only thing, he moved away almost a year ago.

...Warm October Weather...

Our weather will look and feel more like summer over the next few days. The
humidity will be high, temperatures will reach 80 degrees during the
afternoon in many places, and a few scattered showers are possible. Warm air
aloft should keep the showers widely spaced, and there will be some decent
intervals of sunshine at times.

Part of a major storm system over the western U.S. will lift out at the end
of the week and move toward Canada. This will drag a cold front in our
direction, but it is expected to stall out somewhere along the
Alabama/Tennessee line over the weekend. So, while a few scattered showers
will be possible over the weekend, we don't expect a wash-out, and the most
concentrated rain activity should be north of us, over the Tennessee Valley.
Temperatures around here will remain well above normal through Sunday.

The part of the storm that is left behind over the western states will move
into the plains early next week and amplify. This major system should bring
our next significant rain event around Monday night or Tuesday of next week.
Some strong to severe storms will be possible, and then we expect a
noticeable change to cooler temperatures.

OCTOBER HEAT: The high in Montgomery was 88 degrees yesterday, beating the
old record of 87 un 1940. Down in Mobile, this is the 4th warmest October on
record so far.

LUNAR ECLIPSE TONIGHT: The eclipse tonight begins at 8:14 CDT, with totality
from 9:23 to 10:45. The eclipse will end at 10:54 as the moon exits the
Earth's shadow. October's full moon is called the "Hunter's Moon" or
sometimes the "Blood Moon." It gets its name from hunters who tracked and
killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter
ahead.

J.B. ON ASSIGNMENT: J.B. Elliott is down at the National Weather Service
today helping National Geographic as they put together a TV special on the
"Super Outbreak" of tornadoes on April 3-4, 1974. J.B. was on duty that
night when the largest outbreak of tornadoes in our nation's history was
underway.

If you want to see our version of J.B.'s experience that night, join us for
our prime time special called "Storm Alert XTREME" Thursday night from 7:00
until 8:00 p.m. on ABC 33/40. There will be many other remarkable Alabama
storm stories featured during the show.

Guess I better mention our Storm Alert XTREME show this Saturday morning at
the BJCC at 9:30. This is for people who love weather, and the highlight
will be basic and advanced SKYWARN training from ABC 33/40 meteorologist
Brian Peters, who trained over 6,000 storm spotters during his days with the
National Weather Service. There is no cost at all, just show up. You can
meet all of us while you are there, including people like J.B. Elliott and
Bill Murray who don't get the TV exposure like us. Bill will share pictures
and video from his wild tornado chase earlier this year when he intercepted
seven twisters in one afternoon. Bring some friends and come on down.

THE ALABAMA STORY: The key word for the mid-week period is warm. Afternoon
temperatures will remain a good ten degrees above normal for the next few
days, with the mercury reaching at least 80 degrees in most places. Enough
moisture will be in place for a few showers on a daily basis, but they
should remain widely separated, and many places will stay dry.

WEEKEND PEEK: A cold front will approach from the north over the weekend,
but it now looks like the front will run out of gas as it becomes parallel
to the upper air flow. It should stall out somewhere near the
Alabama/Tennessee border late Saturday, before moving northward again as a
warm front Sunday night. If this indeed is the case, then showers here this
weekend will remain few and far between, with the best chance coming near
the Tennessee Valley. And, warm daytime temperatures will stay in place on
both Saturday and Sunday.

ELECTION DAY STORMS? The longer range models suggest a major storm will form
over the southern plains early next week, and will bring a good chance of
showers and strong storms to Alabama by Tuesday of next week. This could be
a setup for severe weather, followed by noticeably cooler temperatures by
Wednesday and Thursday of next week. I can't recall having a severe weather
outbreak on election night in my many years of television weather; it will
be very interesting to see how the timing works out.

HANGING OUT THE WASH: Coldest in the "lower 48" this morning was West
Yellowstone, WY with 13 degrees. Lake Tahoe, CA should have 5 to 10 inches
of snow on the ground by this evening. Snow will fall as far south as the
mountains of southern California. A lunar eclipse begins tomorrow night at
8:14 p.m. CDT .

...Warm October Weather...

The normal high temperature for October 26 is 71 degrees; we should beat
that by about ten degrees across most Alabama communities this afternoon. In
fact, if we hit today's forecast high of 82, we will be within 6 degrees of
today's record high (88 set in 1963).

Enough moisture will remain in place for a few showers, but they should be
rather isolated. In fact, we will have to mention a chance of a shower every
day for the rest of the week in the warm and humid air. But, a strong high
pressure center aloft over the Gulf of Mexico should keep the showers fairly
separated. Temperatures will remain warm for late October.

WEEKEND PEEK: A major storm out west will move into Canada over the coming
weekend, dragging a cold front in our direction. The latest model data
output is showing the front becoming stationary near the Alabama/Tennessee
border late Saturday, and if this is correct much of our weekend will be dry
and warm with only a few scattered showers, mainly over the Tennessee
Valley. Then, early next week, a stronger system should bring a better
chance of rain and storms in here by about Tuesday.

STORM ALERT XTREME: If you are reading this, there is a good chance you
really like weather. So, we personally invite you to our first Storm Alert
XTREME this Saturday at the East Exhibition Hall of the BJCC in downtown
Birmingham at 9:30 a.m. ABC 33/40 meteorologist Brian Peters will conduct
both a basic and an advanced severe storm spotting session, and our
colleague Bill Murray will be there with a great presentation on his tornado
chasing experience in the southern plains earlier this year. There is no
cost, just show up and enjoy!

NEXT BEST CHANCE OF RAIN: Let's say Saturday and Saturday night. This will
be due to another cold front approaching from the NW. Indications are that
the front will be pushing into West Tennessee and NW Mississippi at daybreak
Saturday and by Sunday it the front will tend to slow down and partially
dissipate in Central Alabama. This doesn't mean that we will be completely
free of rain until that time. We have a pesky situation where we have some
leftover moisture hanging around. This will be just enough to give us a
small risk of a shower or possibly thunderstorm each day until that front
increases our chances on Saturday. See our day-by-day forecast for details
on all of that.

Even though we're getting toward the end of October, we do not foresee any
big time chill in the air. In fact, all the way through the weekend lows
should be mostly between 60 and 65 and highs between 76 and 81.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A large low pressure area about 500 miles ENE of Bermuda
was moving toward the ENE at 10 mph. It is part tropical and part "regular."
There is a possibility that a subtropical cyclone could develop from this.
Meanwhile, a westward-moving tropical wave was over the Windward Islands,
but so far no signs of tropical development. Sea surface temperatures across
the Gulf of Mexico have cooled quite a bit since Hurricane Ivan. This
doesn't mean we can't have another tropical storm or hurricane, but it is
not likely. The water temperature is only 79 at the Dauphin Island buoy and
80 at the Panama City buoy. Those temperatures are typical of most of the
Gulf of Mexico. Hurricanes love for the water temperature to be in the mid
80s.

OF INTEREST IN THE ASTRONOMY WORLD: Did you know that October's full moon
is known as the "hunter's moon" or sometimes the "blood moon"? In times
past, hunters trapped and killed their prey by the autumn moonlight,
stockpiling food for the winter. With that big moon, we have a treat coming
up Wednesday night as a lunar eclipse starts at 8:14 CDT reaching totality
between 9:23 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. The overall event will last more than three
hours...sunspot number 687 grew dramatically and is now almost 10 times
wider than the earth.

MONDAY NOTES: USA temperature extremes included 94 Sunday at Alice in South
Texas and 5 above this morning at Northway, Alaska and 7 at Stanley,
Idaho...San Antonio 3.53 inches of rain in the last 24 hours.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Still working hard to stay on the good side of
Miss Molly...one of the newest things she wants me to do is pick her up and
take her to the king-sized bed, place her on the bed upside down and give
her a rubdown from her chin to her hind feet. I think she would like there
for half an hour for that...nice early morning walks over the weekend. With
the shorter days, we're out walking while almost all of you are still
asleep. I can't describe how much she enjoys that first walk of the morning.
She reacts exactly like a small kid going to Visionland or the zoo. All that
enthusiasm rubs off on me and we have a merry, childlike adventure together.
Life goes on but I wish it would slow down at times.

...Good Looking Week...

GOOD MORNING! Get ready for a nearly perfect day across Alabama today. I
was about to issue my first Perfect Weather Warning of the fall season, but
it is going to be a little warm for my criteria. After a little morning fog
burns away, skies will be partly cloudy over the area today, with high
temperatures reaching the lower to middle 80s. Still a nice day and a nice
week.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Expect partly cloudy skies for the most part. There may be
a few periods with more clouds than sun, but it should remain dry and warm
as a ridge of high pressure remains in firm control of our weather. After
today's 80s, temperatures hover around 80 for the daytime highs for the rest
of the week.

A cold front will begin approaching Alabama from the northwest by Saturday,
spreading a band of showers and storms across the state during the afternoon
and evening. This will be followed by another rainmaker the following
week.

ECLIPSE FORECAST: Alabama and much of the U.S. will enjoy their second
lunar eclipse of the year on Thursday night. It will be the last for three
years, so we need to enjoy it. It will begin at 8:14 p.m., with totality
starting at 9:23, lasting 1 hour and 21 minutes. The weather should be okay
for viewing the eclipse.

FALL SEVERE WEATHER SEASON: Alabama has a definite secondary severe weather
season in the falls months of October and November, The past four years
have definitely proved that with significant and deadly tornadoes. The
National Weather Service in Birmingham has proclaimed Wednesday Fall Severe
Weather Preparedness Day in Alabama. Take a chance to review your tornado
safety plans at home and at your place of work or worship.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: A freak accident at a road construction site on I-88
near Erie, Illinois. As two workers tried to cover freshly-poured concrete,
they became wrapped in the plastic they were using and blown into oncoming
traffic where they were struck by a passing vehicle. The two men were
critically injured.

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: Alabama will continue in the midst of a warmer than normal
weather pattern for the coming week as high pressure dominates our weather.
A strong ridge will establish itself over the Gulf extending up into the
Deep South. This will act as a large shield, keeping a frontal system over
the central U.S. at bay.

OUR FORECAST: A pretty simple one, actually. Monday will feature near
total sunshine. Partly cloudy skies will return on Tuesday as our winds
veer around to the east and then the southeast. We may see more clouds than
sun at times during the remainder of the week, but I think we can safely
promise some sun each day. The high pressure ridge will begin to weaken by
some by Friday, allowing a cold front to enter Alabama on Saturday. This
front will spread a band of showers and thunderstorms across the state. The
system will be weakening by the time it reaches us, and we don't expect
severe weather. Another system will follow on the heels of the first,
bringing better rain chances as an upper air trough sets up over Alabama the
first week of November.

IN THE RAIN GAUGE: Almost all of Alabama saw rain in the past twenty four
hours. Across Central Alabama, amounts averaged one half inch, but there was
a band of one to two inch amounts from parts of Lamar and Pickens Counties
into Tuscaloosa County. The Birmingham Airport had just over one half inch
and 1.29 fell at the Shelby Co. Airport. The state's big winner was western
Choctaw County where radar estimates indicated over four inches fell in a
small area west of Butler.

WEDNESDAY IS FALL SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS DAY: Alabama experiences a
secondary peak for severe weather in November and December. The state has
suffered some deadly tornadoes during these months, especially over the past
four years. On December 16, 2000, an F4 tornado killed eleven people in
Tuscaloosa County. On November 21, 2001, several strong tornadoes killed
four people across the state. On November 10, 2002, the terrible Veterans
Day Weekend Outbreak resulted in eleven fatalities in Alabama. All of these
events serve as a reminder of the threat that we face from tornadoes in the
fall. Now is the time to review your tornado safety plan with your families
and employees to make sure you and they know what to do if severe weather
develops. Make sure that you have a reliable way to receive weather watches
and warnings at all times, including when you are sleeping. Know where you
will go and what you will do if severe weather approaches. There will not
be a statewide tornado drill as in the spring, but the normal weekly NOAA
Weatheradio test will be conducted Wednesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: It had been over 100 years since a tornado had hit in
the Corpus Christi, Texas area before a series of three tornadoes touched
down in the Texas coastal city. One of them caused a wall to collapse on
the West Campus of Del Mar College. A teacher was killed and six other
people were injured. Heavy rains associated with the thunderstorm caused
flooding. A tornado warning was issued ten minutes before the first twister
hit.

...Nice Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Well, we had a little excitement around the weather
office last night as our predicted line of thunderstorms intensified over
Mississippi, producing several tornado warnings. As the line approached
Columbus, Mississippi, the southern segment morphed into an impressive bow
echo. But the activity weakened as it moved into more stable air over
Alabama, and no significant damage was reported.

The storms fired along a trough ahead of a cold front that is
located over Northwest Alabama this morning. The front will push
southeastward throughout the day, coasting to a stop over South Central
Alabama. The airmass behind the front is not significantly cooler, but it
is noticeably drier. This will allow for some more comfortable overnight
lows, but highs will still be near 80 for the next few days and the lows
will still be about 8-12 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Skies will clear over northwestern sections this morning, spreading
southeastward through the day. You can expect sunshine in the Gadsden,
Birmingham and Tuscaloosa area before lunchtime, with clear skies by
evening.

High pressure will build into the southeastern United States,
setting the stage for a fairly nice week ahead. The high will keep
approaching weather systems at bay through much of the coming week. Next
rain chance: Saturday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: With five weeks to go in the Atlantic Hurricane
Season, things have gotten a little more active. There is a strong tropical
wave about 500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Favorable upper level
winds could permit some development. There is a strong low pressure system
northwest of Bermuda that could develop subtropical characteristics. If it
does, it would receive a name. The name: Otto.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Mitch became a hurricane in the Caribbean
south of Jamaica and began to intensify rapidly. During a twenty four hour
period beginning on the afternoon of the 24th, its central pressure dropped
52 millibars, to 924 millibars.
