NEXT BEST CHANCE OF RAIN: Let's say Saturday and Saturday night. This will
be due to another cold front approaching from the NW. Indications are that
the front will be pushing into West Tennessee and NW Mississippi at daybreak
Saturday and by Sunday it the front will tend to slow down and partially
dissipate in Central Alabama. This doesn't mean that we will be completely
free of rain until that time. We have a pesky situation where we have some
leftover moisture hanging around. This will be just enough to give us a
small risk of a shower or possibly thunderstorm each day until that front
increases our chances on Saturday. See our day-by-day forecast for details
on all of that.

Even though we're getting toward the end of October, we do not foresee any
big time chill in the air. In fact, all the way through the weekend lows
should be mostly between 60 and 65 and highs between 76 and 81.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A large low pressure area about 500 miles ENE of Bermuda
was moving toward the ENE at 10 mph. It is part tropical and part "regular."
There is a possibility that a subtropical cyclone could develop from this.
Meanwhile, a westward-moving tropical wave was over the Windward Islands,
but so far no signs of tropical development. Sea surface temperatures across
the Gulf of Mexico have cooled quite a bit since Hurricane Ivan. This
doesn't mean we can't have another tropical storm or hurricane, but it is
not likely. The water temperature is only 79 at the Dauphin Island buoy and
80 at the Panama City buoy. Those temperatures are typical of most of the
Gulf of Mexico. Hurricanes love for the water temperature to be in the mid
80s.

OF INTEREST IN THE ASTRONOMY WORLD: Did you know that October's full moon
is known as the "hunter's moon" or sometimes the "blood moon"? In times
past, hunters trapped and killed their prey by the autumn moonlight,
stockpiling food for the winter. With that big moon, we have a treat coming
up Wednesday night as a lunar eclipse starts at 8:14 CDT reaching totality
between 9:23 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. The overall event will last more than three
hours...sunspot number 687 grew dramatically and is now almost 10 times
wider than the earth.

MONDAY NOTES: USA temperature extremes included 94 Sunday at Alice in South
Texas and 5 above this morning at Northway, Alaska and 7 at Stanley,
Idaho...San Antonio 3.53 inches of rain in the last 24 hours.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Still working hard to stay on the good side of
Miss Molly...one of the newest things she wants me to do is pick her up and
take her to the king-sized bed, place her on the bed upside down and give
her a rubdown from her chin to her hind feet. I think she would like there
for half an hour for that...nice early morning walks over the weekend. With
the shorter days, we're out walking while almost all of you are still
asleep. I can't describe how much she enjoys that first walk of the morning.
She reacts exactly like a small kid going to Visionland or the zoo. All that
enthusiasm rubs off on me and we have a merry, childlike adventure together.
Life goes on but I wish it would slow down at times.
