...Dry Weather To Continue...

GOOD MORNING! Four years ago, I was in Telluride, Colorado, watching in
horror as the terrorist attacks of September 11th unfolded before my very
eyes on national television. It seemed very surreal to see first one tower
of the World Trade Center, then the other billowing smoke after airliners
crashed into them. Then the jet crashed into the Pentagon and Flight 93
crashed in Pennsylvania while both towers fell to the ground. It was a
terrible day.

OUR WEATHER: It was a beautiful day in New York City that September
morning, and we are enjoying an unusually fine spate of weather here in
Alabama this September. Of course, it has not rained here in the month,
and we could really use some rain.

OPHELIA: Hurricane Ophelia promises no relief in the precipitation
department. It will definitely stay east of us. There is also now some
hope that it might miss the U.S. coast entirely, or possibly brush the Outer
Banks as it moves north and then north northeast. This would be good news
for places like Wilmington and Myrtle Beach and Charleston. A more easterly
track might also spare the Chesapeake a powerful storm surge like they
experienced from Hurricane Isabel in 2003 that flooded Alexandria, Virginia
and the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore.

OUR WEEK AHEAD: A big ridge of high pressure in the upper atmosphere is
present over Alabama and the Deep South this morning. A large trough of low
pressure will be digging through the Rockies, suppressing the ridge to the
south over the Gulf of Mexico. The large upper trough will be lifting out
over Canada by week's end, but it will allow a front to approach our area
from the north. We will reintroduce a chance of showers by Friday. Until
then, warm and dry conditions will prevail.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Residents along the Gulf Coast were carefully
monitoring the progress of Hurricane Frederic over the southeastern Gulf of
Mexico. More about the historic storm in today's and tomorrow's editions of
Weather Talk.

GOOD AFTERNOON: You couldn’t ask for a more perfect mid-September day out there across Central Alabama. The only clouds are a few scattered cumulus clouds over extreme western sections of the state. Temperatures were uniformly in the upper 80s over all of the state at 1 p.m., so a few locations will undoubtedly register highs of 90 degrees or higher.

OUR FORECAST: Hey! It’s football season! Had to grill a brat and sit down in front of the tube to watch Notre Dame/Michigan and Auburn/Mississippi State. Didn’t feel like fall up at the Big House or down in Auburn, with very warm temperatures for football. Don’t look for much change in our weather through much of the coming week. High pressure should continue to be in control of our weather. Ophelia is the only wild card in our forecast, but its only effect will be to spread some cloudiness over the state. The rains affiliated with the hurricane will stay to the east of Alabama. We could see a few clouds blowing off of the hurricane at times. Otherwise, it will be mostly sunny and hot until the end of the week when a few more clouds and a few showers will sneak back in.

IN THE TROPICS: Maria became extra-tropical overnight and Nate lost its tropical characteristics this morning, leaving only Ophelia in the Atlantic. But Ophelia will be a problem for the South-Atlantic and Mid-Atlantic states. Hurricane Ophelia was located about 225 east southeast of Charleston and about 250 miles south southwest of Cape Hatteras. Hurricane watches are already flying on the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts. The Category One hurricane has top winds of 80 mph and a central pressure of 977 millibars and some slow strengthening is expected. Ophelia could be a Cat Two or maybe a Cat Three hurricane at landfall, which is expected to come Monday afternoon, most likely somewhere between Charleston, SC and Wilmington, NC. Ophelia should continue northward, passing over the Chesapeake bay and then turning to the northeast with time and back over the open Atlantic.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama hosts Southern Miss tonight in Tuscaloosa at 6:45 p.m. Expect fine weather, with clear skies and temperatures falling from the lower 80s into the middle 70s by the end of the game. About the same weather at Troy, where the UAB Blazers will be traveling to take on the Trojans. Winds will be light at both locations.

CONTINUING WITH OUR TODAY IN HURRICANE HISTORY...IN 1964... Hurricane Dora was but a brief interruption for thousands of Beatles fans in Jacksonville, Florida for a much-awaited concert by the British rock group. The storm postponed the concert as the Beatles were diverted to Key West. Dora is the first hurricane to cross the coast of northeast Florida from the Atlantic since the Great Hurricane of 1880. The storm made landfall near St. Augustine with winds of 100mph and gusts to 125 mph. Tides reached twelve feet above normal, 4 feet higher than ever recorded previously. Jacksonville recorded its first ever hurricane force winds with a reading of 82 mph. 23.73 inches of rain were recorded at Mayo, Florida. Damage totaled $230 million.

...AND ON THIS DATE IN 1979... All eyes were on the Gulf of Mexico as Tropical Storm Frederic was moving slowly northwestward near the south coast of western Cuba. Sporting top winds of 50 mph, the storm was expected to reach the extreme southeastern Gulf of Mexico during the day. The storm continued to strengthen all day, and was upgraded to a hurricane at 5 p.m. CDT. Small craft from Tarpon Springs, Florida to the mouth of the Mississippi River were already being warned to exercise caution. Frederic would go on to become a hurricane. The late evening package warned that Frederic would begin to turn north and accelerate. It also stated that there was no known reason why it would not intensify.

...A Calm Weekend...

GOOD MORNING: September 10th is traditionally the busiest day of the North
Atlantic Hurricane Season. Given that fact, you would expect there to be a
plethora of hurricane stories in the old Weather Notebook. And there are.
Look for them all day.

Maria will become a plain old low pressure system this morning, albeit a
strong one, over the far North Atlantic. Nate will be absorbed by a large
trough today. The next main event in a runaway season is Ophelia. It
appears the hurricane will do a dramatic loop back toward the East Coast,
probably along the coast of Georgia or the Carolinas. There is a chance
that the storm could become a major hurricane. Lets hope Ophelia does not
become another infamous name in the list of bad storms.

NICE WEEKEND: It does not appear that Ophelia will have a direct impact on
Alabama's weather. We will remain sandwiched between a trough of low
pressure to the west and Ophelia to the east. Consequently, we will remain
under a ridge of high pressure for the foreseeable future. This means more
dry weather, accompanied by warm afternoons and pleasantly mild nights.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Not much change seen in the medium range forecast either,
with high pressure remaining in control of our weather. This means nothing
in the way of rain through the weekdays this coming week. In fact, I can't
find an organized rain chance in the next ten days.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Mississippi State travels to the Plains to take on the
Tigers at 11:30 a.m. Skies will be clear with game time temperatures in the
lower 90s. The Crimson Tide takes on the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss at
6:45 p.m. in Tuscaloosa and UAB takes on Trojan in Troy at 7:00 p.m.
Temperatures at both venues will be dropping out the 80s into the 70s under
beautiful skies.

ON THIS DATE IN 1811: As a tropical storm passed near the city of
Charleston, South Carolina, it produced a significant tornado that moved
northwest across the center of the city. Sixty homes, many of them
mansions, were destroyed. Eleven people died.

LIKE A BROKEN RECORD: That's what our forecast sounds like lately
and we do not see much change through much of the coming week. Even the old
thermometer will be rather stable.

Dry air continues to slide into the state from the NE. This means
warm afternoons, but pleasant nights. The humidity will continue relatively
low. Therefore, even when the afternoon temperatures edge upward to the
lower 90s it will not be unbearable.

By tomorrow the Birmingham rainfall will slip into a deficit. We
have been carrying a surplus for a long time. Up north, it has been a whole
lot drier. Huntsville has only received 29.25 inches of rain all year, which
is almost 11 inches below normal.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: Mountain City, in the NE corner of Tennessee, has
not reached the 90-degree mark the entire year. They are at an elevation of
2,499 feet, making them the highest town in Tennessee...now a look at some
selected low temperatures this morning:

54 at DeSoto State Park
58 in Athens
59 in Cullman and Huntsville
61 in Anniston and Montgomery
63 in Tuscaloosa
64 in Birmingham
42 atop Mt. LeConte, Tennessee
37 at Stanley, Idaho and in Yellowstone National Park

TROPICAL WEATHER: No need to worry about Maria and Nate any longer.
They are way out in the Atlantic and moving NE. The disturbed weather area
over the SW Gulf of Mexico shows no sign of development. The main star of
the show now is Tropical Storm Ophelia. She was about 130 miles east of
Daytona Beach at midday moving slowly NNE at 5. She may become a hurricane
again later today. She has been switching back and forth. The track forecast
is very interesting. It shows a loop in the Atlantic and then coming back
toward the NW making landfall in the vicinity of Charleston as a hurricane
late Tuesday. However, the cone of concern extends from Central Florida to
Southern North Carolina.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Excellent weather for high school football
tonight with kickoff temperatures in the 80s, but cooling into the 70s. On
Saturday, Mississippi State will play at Auburn at 11:30 a.m., Southern Miss
will be at Alabama at 6:45 p.m. and UAB will be in Troy for a 7:00 p.m.
kickoff. Clear weather for all games. The temperature should peak around 92
during the Auburn game. For the two evening games, it should be about 82 at
kickoff dropping into the mid 70s.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have already set aside a block of
time Saturday morning dedicated to none other than my little 9-pound pal,
Little Miss Molly. I have played with her quite a bit this week, but not
very long at a time. When I do that, she looks disappointed. She would
prefer at least a 30-minute session going at top speed. I guess I need to do
more of those for my own exercise. I cut her morning walk to 1/4 mile. She
resisted and planted her feet on the walking track and did not want to start
back home. She looked longingly the other way hoping to go the distance.
Life goes on short walks or long walks. She and I have walked hundreds of
miles together.

...Warm Afternoons and Cool Nights...

Even though we are beginning to need rain, it doesn't appear likely any time
soon. So, what say we relax and enjoy the very nice weather that has been
going on for a week and will likely continue for at least five or six more
days.

That means mostly sunny days and clear nights. Overnight temperatures will
be very comfortable, generally in the low to mid 60s. Afternoons will warm
up a bit with most highs hanging out within a degree or two of 90.

A big high pressure system over the NE states extends down into this area as
a ridge. It keeps feeding us dry air, so our daytime humidity is fairly
comfortable.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks great for tonight's high school games. Saturday,
Mississippi State will be at Auburn (11:30 am) Southern Miss will be at
Alabama (6:45 pm) and UAB will be at Troy for a 7 pm game. Clear weather for
all games with near 90 in Auburn and about 82 at kickoff for the evening
games.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Ophelia was promoted to a hurricane Thursday afternoon
off the east coast of Florida. She is still throwing us curve balls trying
to determine which way she will go. The NHC official track forecast sends
her to about 250 miles east of Savannah, then she loops around and heads
back west! Translation: another game of watch and wait. Meanwhile, Nate and
Maria are way out in the Atlantic and no threat to the USA. We will continue
to watch a disturbed weather area over the SW Gulf of Mexico.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had a very enjoyable day
yesterday. Both our son and daughter came by. She dearly loves both and they
spent some time playing with her. I had at least three ballgames with her
plus tug rope and wrestling. Played with her some more late at night mainly
to get rid of her excess energy. Lfie goes on.

GETTING TOO DRY: Many sections of Alabama have not had a drop of
rain so far in September. We are no where near drought status, but you can
tell by the countryside that the foliage along the hillsides is beginning to
take on a dry look.

What are our chances for rain? Nil to none over the next 5 or 6
days. If we get any, it will be due to Ophelia off the east coast of
Florida. We will discuss that in our tropical paragraph.

Meanwhile, we will continue to enjoy humidity that is relatively low
with cool nights and warm afternoons. Sunshine will be predominant during
the daytime and nights will be mostly clear. We will continue to have low
temperatures mostly in the mid 60s, but afternoons will heat up a bit to
just above 90.
THE TROPICAL MORASS: A lot going on in the Atlantic Basin.
Hurricanes Maria and Nate are way out in the Atlantic and no threat to the
USA. The SW Gulf of Mexico is upset because of a low pressure area with
showers and thunderstorms. Little change in the last several hours, but if
it stays over water, it may get a little better organized in the next couple
of days. Naturally, our main interest is Tropical Storm Ophelia who remains
stalled about 60 miles ENE of Cape Canaveral. She probably will not move
much in the next 24 hours. Parts of East Florida may get an additional 5
inches of rain. The tropical models on Ophelia resemble a plate of
spaghetti. So, for now, we should go along with the official tracking chart
that eventually sends her NE by late Friday and Saturday, increasing her to
a hurricane and then starting a right hand loop. Her future course after
that is a toss up.

EVENTS AND LINKS: Do not forget a two-hour ABC 33/40 telethon
starting at 6:00 p.m. this evening from the BJCC downtown. It will be
moderated by 33/40 personalities. The City of Helena, along with a band
titled 4 on the Floor and other bands, will be doing a free concert to
benefit hurricane victims. It will be a day of music and hope. These "Bands
of Hope" are donating their talents. It will be this Sunday (September 11)
at the Old Town Amphitheater Park between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. A truck
will be parked at the entrance for collection of donated items. One of our
longtime readers suggested this web site that could be useful in finding
family members and friends. It is gulfcoastnews.com. Input the person's last
name.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is difficult to stop thinking about
the Katrina disaster, but I must tell you that early morning walks with
Little Miss Molly is great medicine to temporarily push it aside. It could
not have been nicer this morning with a cool breeze and a bright sun
backlighting the Old Crow Motel. The sky was about 1/3 covered by scattered
altocumulus clouds at about 10,000 feet. That added to the beauty. The birds
were singing and the old crows fussing. Back home, Little Miss Molly got her
treat and I went back to work. Life goes on.

...Ophelia In No Hurry To Move...

Very dry air will stay in place over Alabama today, meaning another sunny
day with low humidity values and temperatures rising into the upper 80s
today. We will maintain a rain-free forecast through the weekend ahead with
warm afternoons and pleasant nights. For most Alabama communities today will
be the 8th day in a row without a drop of rain.

OPHELIA: Tropical storm Ophelia could grow into a hurricane today. The
system is about 80 to 100 miles east of Cape Canaveral, Florida, and is
moving very little. Occasional heavy rain, gusty winds, high surf, and
riptides will be a problem again today for places like Jacksonville and
Daytona Beach.
Steering currents remain weak, and the system won't move much through
tomorrow. The good news is that most of the computer models are now showing
Ophelia ultimately moving out to sea in the open Atlantic in 4 to 7 days
without making landfall on the U.S. coast.

However, we must stress that a move back to the west, across Florida and
into the Gulf of Mexico, is not out of the question just yet.

ELSEWHERE: Hurricanes Maria and Nate will not affect the U.S. mainland, but
Nate will be close enough to Bermuda today to produce tropical storm force
winds. And, a disturbance over the western Gulf of Mexico will bring locally
heavy rain to parts of the south Texas coast.

A WET YEAR: The rain total for Demopolis since January 1 is a whopping
63.88", about 25 inches more that has fallen in Birmingham, and 26.17" above
normal.

TONIGHT: Be sure and join us for a live telethon on ABC 33/40 tonight from
6:00 to 8:00 to benefit survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

IN THE COOL, COOL OF THE MORNING: Cannot get much nicer than this
even though the afternoons are a bit on the warm side. The humidity is lower
and the early mornings are nice and cool. A quick look at some lows this
morning:

55 in DeSoto State Park and Belle Mina
57 in Hamilton, Heflin, Valley Head, Grove Oak
58 in Pinson, Collinsville and Decatur
59 in Fayette and Muscle Shoals
60 in Jasper, Huntsville, Wedowee
63 in Tuscaloosa
64 in Anniston and Birmingham

Mostly clear and dry weather is expected all the way through the
weekend. Afternoons will heat up just a bit with near 90 over the weekend,
but we will keep mid 60s for lows all the way through.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Down the road our forecast may depend on the
future movement of Tropical Storm Ophelia now off the east coast of Florida.
Due to her slow movement, her future path is highly uncertain. A couple of
the models bring her across the Florida Peninsula and into the Gulf. The NHC
Official Tracking Chart is very interesting as it brings her toward the NNW
and north and by Monday morning starting a right hand loop. We will simply
have to wait and watch after that. She is expected to have sustained winds
around 80 mph by that time. She was located early this afternoon about 80
miles ENE of Cape Canaveral, Florida and essentially stationary. Meanwhile,
we do not have to worry about Hurricanes Maria and Nate. They will not
affect the USA, although Nate could be a problem for Bermuda. The nervous
weather area over the West Gulf of Mexico will develop only slowly, if at
all.

RUNNING OUT OF NAMES? Here we are with Tropical Storm Ophelia,
which is the earliest in history for the 15th named storm of the season. We
only have six more names ending with the "w" storm called Wilma. Several
have asked, if we go past Wilma, would start over on the 2005 list or jump
forward to 2006. Instead, we would shift to the Greek alphabet. Some of
those early names would be Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta.

You will never hear of Hurricane Katrina in future years. All "super
hurricanes" have their names retired, never to be used again. Storms like
Opal, Hugo, Camille. (Thanks to Shayne Hardesty for suggesting this story.)

FINAL NOTES: 28 this morning in Barrow, Alaska and Stanley, Idaho
for the USA low...it was a chilly 41 on Mt. LeConte in the Great Smokies, 43
on Mt. Mitchell, N. C. and 47 at Beach Mountain and Grandfather Mountain, N.
C.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This was one morning when Little Miss
Molly put her foot down. She was extremely assertive. Under no circumstance
would she let me shorten her walk. We had to go the full half mile. I did
not mind. That brisk NE wind and temperatures in the low 60s made it a
pleasure. Visibility was needle sharp. If I could have climbed to the top of
the Old Crow Motel, I believe I could have seen Mt. Cheaha...no one was in
the Old Crow. Since the cool weather on recent mornings, we have heard more
and more birds singing. I guess they stayed deep in their air conditioned
underbrush when it was hot. Sure was nice to hear the music of two old crows
also. We always miss them. I didn't think Molly was going to ever let me
come home, but life goes on.

...Tropical Weather Remains Active...

Very dry air will remain across Alabama and we see no significant chance of
rain through Friday. Afternoons will remain warm with low humidity, and
nights will be very pleasant.

WEEKEND PEEK: At this point Saturday looks dry, and we will mention the
chance of a few isolated showers by Sunday afternoon. Then, the weather next
week all depends on the situation with tropical depression 16 (soon to be
tropical storm Ophelia).

TROPICS: Maria and Nate remain tropical systems that will stay over open
water and are no threat to land. A wave in the Gulf of Mexico is moving
westward, and could bring some heavy rain to parts of Texas by the end of
the week.

The system we will focus on is tropical depression 16, which is near
Freeport in the Bahamas, or east of the central Atlantic coast of Florida.
Steering currents are weak right now, which will make for a difficult
forecast. The latest official track from the National Hurricane Center puts
the system near Jacksonville as a strong tropical storm early in the
weekend. Then, the system moves westward generally along I-10. If this is
correct, moisture will increase dramatically early next week with lots of
rain.

However, some of the models take Ophelia on a more southward track, cutting
across the Florida peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico. All we can do at
this point is wait and watch.

GETTING DRY: Birmingham's rain surplus for 2005 is vanishing; as of today we
are only 0.41" above normal for the year, with a total of 38.39" since
January 1. Today will be the seventh day in a row with no rain.

ALL WET: Mobile's total for the year is a whopping 65.58", 17.31" above
normal.

A PARADE IN THE ATLANTIC: Wish we could forget the Tropics for a while, but
we cannot. Now we have tropical depression 16, which is wanting to become a
tropical storm near the Florida east coast. The depression formed in the NW
Bahamas this morning. It is often difficult to get a good handle on the
future track this early in the game. Yesterday, some of the models wanted to
bring it across the Florida Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico. Still an
outside chance that will happen, but most models hint that it will be
indecisive for a time and then move slowly NW. The official NHC tracking
chart brings it ashore in NE Florida Saturday morning in the general
vicinity of St. Augustine or Jacksonville. It will be named Tropical Storm
Ophelia.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Nate was stalled 275 miles SSW of Bermuda. He may
become a hurricane Wednesday, but not expected to bother the USA. Maria
became a major hurricane yesterday, but today sustained winds were back to
100 mph at her position 545 miles NNE of Bermuda. She will bother only
shipping at sea and whatever else is swimming around in those ocean waters.
Fortunately, a tropical wave near the Lesser Antilles has weakened.

We still cannot forget Hurricane Katrina. One thing I had overlooked is that
the Port of New Orleans is blocked. There are numerous barges parked all the
way up the Mississippi River loaded with Midwest crops. Incoming ships are
also blocked. We do not know how many things are sunk in the Port.

THE ALABAMA STORY: Cooler and dry air continues to spread into the state
from New England, the Atlanta Seaboard and the Southern Appalachians. We may
be breathing the same air today that someone in Boston or Saranac Lake, New
York was breathing just a few days ago. It sure does feel good with the low
dew points, reasonable temperatures and great visibility. We should stay dry
through Saturday. It is very easy for my thoughts to wander away to Mt.
Cheaha or DeSoto State Park on a day like this. Must wait, however, for
autumn foliage. Let us look at a few sample lows this morning:

56 in DeSoto State Park (Little River Canyon)
57 in Valley Head
58 at Russell Cave National Monument
59 at Ft. Payne, Pinson, Hartselle, Hazel Green
60 in Anniston
63 in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: 27 in Stanley, Idaho was the coldest this morning, 3
degrees colder than good old Deadhorse, Alaska...weather can be fatal
indirectly. On September 6, 1881, it was a "yellow day" in the NE due to
raging forest fires in Michigan. 500 people were killed and 20 towns were
wiped out.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Do not know what we would do if we were in New
Orleans and had Little Miss Molly and had to evacuate without her. Do not
think we could do it. In fact, we talked to Molly last night and told her we
would never abandon her. Sure was touching to see a lady crying her eyes out
because she was going to be forced to leave her dog behind. You could tell
they were tightly bonded...Miss Molly forced me to go an entire 1/2 mile
this morning on our walk. Sure did feel good with temperatures in the 60s
and a nice NE breeze. The leaves on the Old Crow Motel were quivering
reminding me of the quaking aspens in the west whose leaves quiver at the
slightest breeze...we heard several old crows. We wondered if they had been
down on the coast for an end-of-the-summer vacation and had to evacuate
because of katrina. Life goes on but sadly life ended for so many along the
Gulf Coast.

...Watching the Tropics...

Very quiet weather continues across Alabama through the rest of the week as
a fresh supply of dry air moves in from the east. Dewpoints will drop into
the 50s, making for a comfortable September day. We are forecasting low 60s
by early tomorrow, but a number of the cooler valleys across north and
central Alabama should reach the upper 50s, a very nice preview of fall.

Moisture will begin spreading into the state this weekend, and we will
introduce the chance of a few scattered showers by Sunday, which could last
into the first part of next week.

TROPICS: Lots of action in the Atlantic. Hurricane Maria continues to move
north-northwest through the open waters of the central Atlantic and is no
threat to land. Tropical depression fifteen formed yesterday south-southwest
of Bermuda, but it is expected to ultimately curve to the northeast and is
not a threat to the U.S. mainland as it stays over the open Atlantic.

The system we are focusing on is just off the Atlantic coast of Florida, and
should become tropical depression sixteen today. Steering currents are very
weak, and we don't expect much motion through mid-week. There is some chance
it could begin to move to the west, possibly moving across central Florida
and into the Gulf of Mexico at some point in the future, so needless to say
we will watch it very closely.

And, on top of all of that, a tropical wave is entering the eastern
Caribbean this morning and has the potential to develop some over the next
few days as it moves steadily westward.

EXTREMES: National hot spot yesterday was Bullhead City, AZ with 109
degrees. Deadhorse, Alaska dropped to 24 yesterday morning and was the
coldest place in the U.S.

...Happy Labor Day...

GOOD MORNING: Today marks sort of the unofficial end of summer for me. I
love going back and watching the old 8mm movies of my family getting
together when I was small on Labor Day. There was always a barbecue in the
backyard of my Grandparents' house in North Birmingham. Invariably, my
father and his brothers would be doing something to the house, such as
painting. There was always a baseball game on the radio. Those were fun
times. I know that the people of coastal Mississippi, Alabama and Southeast
Louisiana are longing for such simple times today as they struggle through
another day. Let's keep them in our thoughts and remember the gargantuan
relief effort that is underway.

OUR FORECAST: High pressure will maintain an easterly flow over Alabama
this week, giving us mild temperatures, intervals of sun and clouds, and a
few showers at times. Low pressure over South Florida will move northward
and may give us slightly better rain chances toward week's end. But all in
all, this will be a nice week weather wise.

KATRINA'S RECORD LEGACY: When the barometric pressure dropped to 28.74
inches just before 4:30 p.m. CDT on Monday at the NWS in Jackson,
Mississippi, it marked the lowest pressure ever recorded at the station. It
was even lower than the 28.94 inches measured during the passage of
Hurricane Camille.

ON THIS DATE IN 1925: Alabama's all-time record heat wave was at its
height. The state recorded its hottest temperature ever (112F) at
Centreville. Every reporting station in the state of Alabama recorded a
high of 100 degrees or higher on this date, an unprecedented event that has
never been repeated. Meanwhile, Birmingham was recording its third of seven
straight days with temperatures over 100 degrees. On the 5th and 6th, the
temperature at Birmingham topped out at 106 degrees. After letting up a
bit, the temperature would once again reach the century mark on September
22nd (the latest the Magic City has ever seen 100 degrees.) The high
temperatures were made worse by a severe drought.

GOOD AFTERNOON: One week ago at this hour, Brian Peters and I were driving
east of US-90 from Biloxi, heading toward Mobile. Traffic was light and
people seemed to be nonchalantly going about their business. Preparations
were not going at the frantic pace that I expected. Radio reports out of
New Orleans were disturbing, with evacuees waiting for hours on area roads.
Brian and I looked at each other and worried simultaneously that this was
the big one, the one we had feared.

QUIET LABOR DAY WEEKEND... Labor Day weekend frequently involves a
hurricane threat somewhere around the U.S. Think about it. Last year we
had Frances. There was Betsy. And don't forget Elena in 1986. Not this
year, with our only active named storm, Maria, wandering out through the
Central Atlantic.
THE WEEK AHEAD... Broad high pressure continues over the eastern half of the
country today. That high pressure is the dominant feature in our weather.
There is quite a range in dew point temperatures, from the middle 50s over
Northwest Alabama to near 70 over southeastern sections of the state. Those
higher dew points are associated with a richer moisture field. You can
pick it out easily on visible satellite photos, with the cumulus field
limited to areas south and east generally of I-59. Partly cloudy skies will
prevail for the remainder of today and over the next several days. An
easterly and northeasterly wind flow around the bottom of the high pressure
will give us mild temperatures and relatively dry conditions, even though
there could be some intervals which are more on the cloudy side. There
could even be a couple of showers here and there, associated with any
disturbances that ripple across in the flow, but it should remain mainly dry
through the work week.

Temperatures should remain right around normal this week with the mild
easterly flow. Highs will be in the 80s each day and overnight lows will be
in the 60s. The GFS model still develops a low pressure system over South
Florida, but the morning run carries the disturbance northward over the
Florida Peninsula. Still, a few showers will likely develop by late
Thursday in the cyclonic flow over the state. But no major rain is expected
right on into the weekend.

IN THE TROPICS: Hurricane Maria is about 600 miles east southeast of
Bermuda this afternoon. The storm is moving north northwest and poses no
threat to land at this time. A disturbance is located about 400 miles
northeast of the Bahamas. It has some potential to develop into a
depression, but it is moving north. More disturbed weather is located
across South Florida and the Bahamas. This system is not very organized
now, but there is some potential for it to develop over the next day or so.
There is another tropical wave 600 miles east of the Windward Islands, but
development is not indicated at this time.

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: The remnants of Tropical Storm Norma caused severe
flooding in Central Arizona.. Twenty three people were killed (most of them
campers) as rivers rose five to ten feet in an hour in what would be the
state's worst natural disaster.
