...Ophelia In No Hurry To Move...

Very dry air will stay in place over Alabama today, meaning another sunny
day with low humidity values and temperatures rising into the upper 80s
today. We will maintain a rain-free forecast through the weekend ahead with
warm afternoons and pleasant nights. For most Alabama communities today will
be the 8th day in a row without a drop of rain.

OPHELIA: Tropical storm Ophelia could grow into a hurricane today. The
system is about 80 to 100 miles east of Cape Canaveral, Florida, and is
moving very little. Occasional heavy rain, gusty winds, high surf, and
riptides will be a problem again today for places like Jacksonville and
Daytona Beach.
Steering currents remain weak, and the system won't move much through
tomorrow. The good news is that most of the computer models are now showing
Ophelia ultimately moving out to sea in the open Atlantic in 4 to 7 days
without making landfall on the U.S. coast.

However, we must stress that a move back to the west, across Florida and
into the Gulf of Mexico, is not out of the question just yet.

ELSEWHERE: Hurricanes Maria and Nate will not affect the U.S. mainland, but
Nate will be close enough to Bermuda today to produce tropical storm force
winds. And, a disturbance over the western Gulf of Mexico will bring locally
heavy rain to parts of the south Texas coast.

A WET YEAR: The rain total for Demopolis since January 1 is a whopping
63.88", about 25 inches more that has fallen in Birmingham, and 26.17" above
normal.
