...Happy Labor Day...
GOOD MORNING: Today marks sort of the unofficial end of summer for me. I
love going back and watching the old 8mm movies of my family getting
together when I was small on Labor Day. There was always a barbecue in the
backyard of my Grandparents' house in North Birmingham. Invariably, my
father and his brothers would be doing something to the house, such as
painting. There was always a baseball game on the radio. Those were fun
times. I know that the people of coastal Mississippi, Alabama and Southeast
Louisiana are longing for such simple times today as they struggle through
another day. Let's keep them in our thoughts and remember the gargantuan
relief effort that is underway.
OUR FORECAST: High pressure will maintain an easterly flow over Alabama
this week, giving us mild temperatures, intervals of sun and clouds, and a
few showers at times. Low pressure over South Florida will move northward
and may give us slightly better rain chances toward week's end. But all in
all, this will be a nice week weather wise.
KATRINA'S RECORD LEGACY: When the barometric pressure dropped to 28.74
inches just before 4:30 p.m. CDT on Monday at the NWS in Jackson,
Mississippi, it marked the lowest pressure ever recorded at the station. It
was even lower than the 28.94 inches measured during the passage of
Hurricane Camille.
ON THIS DATE IN 1925: Alabama's all-time record heat wave was at its
height. The state recorded its hottest temperature ever (112F) at
Centreville. Every reporting station in the state of Alabama recorded a
high of 100 degrees or higher on this date, an unprecedented event that has
never been repeated. Meanwhile, Birmingham was recording its third of seven
straight days with temperatures over 100 degrees. On the 5th and 6th, the
temperature at Birmingham topped out at 106 degrees. After letting up a
bit, the temperature would once again reach the century mark on September
22nd (the latest the Magic City has ever seen 100 degrees.) The high
temperatures were made worse by a severe drought.
