...Watching the Tropics...

Very quiet weather continues across Alabama through the rest of the week as
a fresh supply of dry air moves in from the east. Dewpoints will drop into
the 50s, making for a comfortable September day. We are forecasting low 60s
by early tomorrow, but a number of the cooler valleys across north and
central Alabama should reach the upper 50s, a very nice preview of fall.

Moisture will begin spreading into the state this weekend, and we will
introduce the chance of a few scattered showers by Sunday, which could last
into the first part of next week.

TROPICS: Lots of action in the Atlantic. Hurricane Maria continues to move
north-northwest through the open waters of the central Atlantic and is no
threat to land. Tropical depression fifteen formed yesterday south-southwest
of Bermuda, but it is expected to ultimately curve to the northeast and is
not a threat to the U.S. mainland as it stays over the open Atlantic.

The system we are focusing on is just off the Atlantic coast of Florida, and
should become tropical depression sixteen today. Steering currents are very
weak, and we don't expect much motion through mid-week. There is some chance
it could begin to move to the west, possibly moving across central Florida
and into the Gulf of Mexico at some point in the future, so needless to say
we will watch it very closely.

And, on top of all of that, a tropical wave is entering the eastern
Caribbean this morning and has the potential to develop some over the next
few days as it moves steadily westward.

EXTREMES: National hot spot yesterday was Bullhead City, AZ with 109
degrees. Deadhorse, Alaska dropped to 24 yesterday morning and was the
coldest place in the U.S.
