GOOD AFTERNOON: Spent the morning working on my presentation for the Storm Xtreme weather seminar. I will be talking my 2004 storm chasing experiences. You will have the rare opportunity to receive basic and advanced storm spotter training all in the same day. Learn the clues that will help you identify potentially deadly tornadoes before they form. It’s training that might save your life, or prepare you for the exciting and rewarding opportunity to be a part of the network of storm spotters that are the eyes and ears of the National Weather Service. It’s all two weeks from today at the BJCC.

CHILLY START THIS MORNING: Temperatures fell into the 40s in most locations across Central Alabama. Readings actually rose during the pre-dawn hours at some locations thanks to some cloud cover that rolled across that area. Areas that were clear the longest, including southern sections turned out to be the coolest. Some state overnight low readings included:
43 at Troy

41 at Brewton
38 at Greenville
41 at Thomasville
40 at Jackson
39 at Fort Payne
44 at the Birmingham Airport
40 in Pinson

FOR THE REMAINDER OF YOUR WEEKEND: The cloudiness over North Alabama is being caused by a trough of low pressure that extends down into the state. The trough has pushed a weak cold front down into North Central Alabama, but it is barely noticeable. The front will stall and start to move back north on Sunday as a warm front. Readings tonight will drop into the lower 50s across the area. We will continue under a northwesterly flow aloft compliments of the trough through early tomorrow, when the trough will lift out to the northeast and allow the upper flow to become more zonal, or west to east.

LOOKING AHEAD: A fairly strong upper high Is forecast to develop over the Gulf of Mexico, which will keep subsequent fronts from sweeping through Alabama. But the high will be far enough east to allow some southwesterly upper winds over the state, which means increased clouds and a slight chance of showers, with slightly above normal readings for the week ahead. A front will give us a fairly good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday. Skies should remain partly cloudy on Wednesday, but a little more sunshine will appear on Thursday. Another front will try to approach the area on Friday, increasing that rain chances just a tad again.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: A major wildfire across eastern Washington and northern Idaho caused $8 million in damage in the Spokane and Coeur dAlene area. Two people died. The wildfire resulted from a moderate windstorm that downed power lines during extremely dry conditions.

...Beautiful Weekend...

GOOD MORNING! It is another refreshing morning across the area. For the second morning in a row, temperatures have bottomed out in the 40s in most locations. Most locations will stay out of the 40s for the next few days. Highs today will manage 70 in most locations under partly cloudy skies. A weak frontal system over the northern section of the state brought a few clouds along with it early this morning, and those clouds will keep us partly cloudy to occasionally partly sunny today and tomorrow. The Alabama and Auburn games should both feature decent weather with comfortable temperatures in the upper 60s and a mix of clouds and sun.

The front will barely be noticed pushing back north on Sunday as a decent southerly low level flow returns. Sunday looks like a nice day, although there are some signs that a shower or two might develop. We will keep them out of the forecast for now, and expect nice afternoon temperatures in the middle to upper
70s, just about normal for this time of year.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By Monday, that southerly flow will be in business across the state. Showers will begin to develop on Monday, but will be more likely on Tuesday as a front approaches from the north. But a strong subtropical high off the Atlantic coast will flex its muscles and push the front back to the north by Wednesday. But, those shower chances will remain with us through much of the coming week. Another front will approach Alabama by the weekend, likely stalling across North Alabama as a low develops to the west. This could spell a wet weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: The first GOES satellite was launched. GOES, short for the Geostationary Operational Satellite Program, is a series of satellites first launched by NASA and later transferred to the National Weather Service. The satellites remain in a stationary orbit some 22,300 miles above the same location on the Earth giving meteorologists a constant view of the same regions of the Earth so that they can monitor the formation, location and movement of cloud systems.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Hello from the Big D, Dallas, Texas on this Friday afternoon. When I am on the road, I occasionally will order a nice room service breakfast. That seemed appropriate this morning as I leisurely perused all of the morning’s weather data. A little NPR, a nice ham and cheese omelet, some potatoes with red peppers, (it is Dallas after all) some OJ and a grapefruit half. It’s amazing what you can get for just $31. Oh, well. You only live once, right?

BRISK START THIS MORNING: Things got off to a chilly start this morning across Alabama. Readings in the mid/upper 40s were common, with a few low 40s mixed in for effect. It was 38F in Highland Home below Montgomery for the state’s cool spot this morning. Temperatures today are doing well to make it very far into the 60s. This fallish weather will still be with us tonight, as readings again fall into the forties across the area, perfect for those high school football games. Temperatures on Saturday will be near 70 and in the upper 70s on Sunday.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: This current chill is the result of an upper air pattern that looks like the big hill on the Scream Machine. The next two weeks will feature a progressive upper air pattern over North America with a series of troughs and ridges marching across the northern part of the continent. There will be a persistent high pressure cell off the South Atlantic coast, though, that will help to shunt most of the really cool air and more active weather to our north. Next week does look to be rather unsettled, with a chance of showers starting Monday or Tuesday lasting through most of the week. A cold front will edge slowly into the South on Friday, probably grinding to a halt over the northern half of the state. A low will then form to our west, and could spell a wet weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Perfect weather for tonight’s high school games and the UAB game at Legion Field. Saturday’s games will also be nice. Expect partly cloudy skies in Tuscaloosa for Homecoming at the Capstone with a kick off temperature in the upper 60s. Lots of sunshine on the Plains as Auburn entertains Arkansas. Again, game time temps in the upper 60s.

HAZEL’S LEGACY: When the subject of hurricanes is raised in South Carolina and North Carolina, stories about Hurricane Hazel inevitably come to the forefront. On this date in 1954, the hurricane made landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina on the South Carolina/North Carolina border as a category four storm with top winds of 150 mph. A record storm surge caused extreme destruction along the North Carolina Coast with an eighteen foot tide at Calabash. The tide height was enhanced by highest lunar tide of the year. Three hundred homes vanished without a trace at Long Island NC. One of the worst tragedies of Hazel occurred at Ocean Isle, a resort west of Long Beach. The tiny island was cutoff from the mainland early in the storm when the ferry was destroyed. Eleven people stranded on the island sought shelter in a two story building, but quickly found it crumbling around them.

They made their way to a truck through the breaking waves, but it too was washed away. Only two of the eleven people survived.

...A Chilly Wind; Sun By Afternoon...

The coolest air so far this fall season will blow into Alabama today on
strong westerly winds, which will gust as high as 30 mph in spots
(especially higher terrain). Some clouds could linger early this morning,
but the sky should clear nicely from west to east, and most places will see
sunshine by midday. Temperatures will struggle to reach the low 60s, and we
go back into the upper 40s early tomorrow morning with a mostly fair sky.

THE WEEKEND: We will forecast a partly sunny sky tomorrow and Sunday with a
warming trend. At this point our next chance of rain looks to be Monday
night into Tuesday of next week as a cold front stalls out just north of
here as it becomes parallel to the upper air flow.

The latest model data suggests the latter half of next week could be rather
wet as well.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: You will need a warm jacket for tonight's UAB-TCU game at
Legion Field (7:00 kickoff); temperatures will drop into the low to mid 50s
with a cool breeze. The sky should be mostly clear. Same deal for the high
school football games across the state.

Tomorrow, Alabama will host Southern Mississippi at 2:00. The sky should be
partly sunny with about 67 degrees at kickoff. Down in Lee county, Auburn
hosts Arkansas at 2:30. Great football weather there with ample sunshine and
about 67 degrees at kickoff.

FACE TO FACE WITH IVAN: I will be live in Gulf Shores tomorrow night for a
one hour special called "Face to Face With Hurricane Ivan". The show will
begin at 9:00 p.m. on ABC 33/40, and we will update the recovery progress in
coastal Alabama exactly one month after Ivan roared ashore.

SHOWERS TONIGHT, A DRY WEEKEND: The main part of our weather story today is
built around a strong cold front that will be moving west to east across the
state tonight. This will bring sharply lower temperatures and by morning you
are going to need a nice coat and, if you're really cold natured, a heavy
coat. As the front moves through, it's going to set off some showers but not
as much rain as earlier expected. We think that the heavier showers and some
thunderstorms will be close to the Gulf Coast. This tends to block off the
moisture supply to North and Central Alabama decreasing the amount of rain
here. When you get up tomorrow morning, there could still be a few patches
of leftover light rain or drizzle, but it should end quickly followed by
decreasing clouds. While temperatures are still in the mid 40s early
tomorrow, west winds of 12-25 mph will send the wind chill well down into
the 30s.

The weekend looks great with afternoon temperatures bouncing back to 70 to
74. Nights will still be cool.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games Friday night, dry and rather
cool with temperatures in the 50s. Same story Friday night for the UAB-TCU
game at Legion Field. On Saturday, Arkansas will be in Auburn and
Mississippi Southern in Tuscaloosa for 2:30 pm games. It should be mostly
sunny with game time temperatures in the 60s at both places..

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is a large low pressure area 550 miles WSW of the
southernmost Azores. (Translation: way out in the Atlantic.) It was moving
slowly north. It has no tropical characteristics, but it could possibly
develop into a sub-tropical cyclone in the next couple of days as it moves
slowly north.

THURSDAY TIDBITS: A very cold 18 in Embarrass, Minnesota was the lowest in
the lower 48 this morning. By the way, that town is not named because they
are embarrassed by their bitter cold winters.it was 7 above at Arctic
Village, Alaska.103 in Death Valley was yesterday's hottest...we will soon
be in our secondary tornado season. They are not out of the question even in
late October...on this date in 1909, an F3 tornado struck Pittsburg Landing
and Stantonville, Tennessee with 23 persons killed and 80 injured.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another walk with little Miss Molly at
nightfall yesterday. On the other side of the thick underbrush north of the
walking trail are some new homes. A beautiful little white dog, slightly
larger than Molly, lives there and he has the run of 2 or 3 yards. He came
down to the hedgerow to greet Molly and I thought that she was going to have
a heart attack trying to get to him to rub noses. She kept poking in the
thick underbrush trying to find an opening, but never could. She sure whined
and complained. Further up the walking track, while it was too dark to see,
one of the CRs (community rabbits) was sitting in the grass. In only two
leaps, he jumped the Old Crow Creek and disappeared into the underbrush(the
Old Crow Creek is a small wet-weather stream adjacent to the Old Crow
Motel)...first rabbit we have seen in many weeks...engaged Molly into a
rapid 30 minute play session as soon as her feet hit the floor this
morning...she loved it no end and seemed to forget that she needed to go
outside.

...Rain Tonight; Then Much Cooler...

Get ready for the coolest air so far this fall season. Before it arrives, we
will deal with a round of showers and thunderstorms late this afternoon and
tonight as a strong upper trough sweeps through the deep south. The air will
be cool and stable, so severe weather is not likely. But, I would not be
shocked to hear of some reports of small hail because of very cold air
aloft. The best chance of rain will come from about 5:00 this afternoon
through 7:00 a.m. tomorrow.

After early morning temperatures in the mid 40s tomorrow, the mercury will
struggle to reach the mid 50s during the day with a very chilly west wind,
which will gust to 25 to 30 mph on the ridges across north Alabama. The sun
should begin to appear during the afternoon as the air begins to dry out.
You will need a warm jacket for high school football games tomorrow night
with temperatures mostly in the low 50s. And, we will go back into the 40s
early Saturday morning.

The weekend will be dry with a good deal of sunshine on Saturday and Sunday
and a slow warming trend.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will approach Alabama from the north early next
week, but it will become parallel to the upper air flow and is expected to
stall out somewhere over Arkansas and Tennessee. This could keep much of the
rain north of us at least through Tuesday.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: A tornado touched down last night near Elm City,
NC. Another tornado was reported near Scurry, TX. There was no major damage
from either storm. Wisdom, MT was the coldest place in the nation early
yesterday with 13 degrees. Some snow is likely tomorrow in northern
Minnesota.

A NICE COOL DOWN: It was already underway this afternoon. Temperatures were
in the mid to upper 50s with a fairly brisk westerly wind. The cool air was
spreading over much of the state. We're looking for another cold front to
move through the state Thursday and Thursday night. It's going to set off
some showers and possible thunderstorms. Most communities will have an
excellent chance of getting wet. Here in Central Alabama, almost all of
tomorrow's precipitation will be later in the day and Thursday night. If we
had to pin it down closer, we would say mid afternoon and until past
midnight Thursday night.

Tomorrow's cold front will likely cause temperatures to peak around midday
or early afternoon and then fall the rest of the afternoon and tomorrow
night. By Friday morning, almost all of the rain will be east of the state,
although we could have some lingering light rain or drizzle during the early
morning hours. Low temperatures Friday will be in the mid 40s and highs will
only be around 58-62. Brisk west winds of 12-22 mph will make it feel a lot
cooler. On some of the higher elevations, such as Shades Mountain and Mt.
Cheaha, winds may gust over 25 mph.

THE WEEKEND: It should be dry with considerable sunshine with highs close
to the 70-degree mark. Excellent college football weather.

WEDNESDAY NOTES: 99 degrees in Death Valley was the hottest
yesterday...lows this morning included 19 at Doylesville, Colorado where
some fresh snow fell.

OCTOBER RAINFALL: October is normally the driest month of the year in
Alabama and we have experienced some championship droughts in the past. We
are still very short on rainfall this October, except over on the south and
SW side of the state where Tropical Storm Matthew brought some good amounts
last weekend. Only one-third inch of rain has fallen so far this month in
Birmingham. It is encouraging that we don't have any tropical systems in the
Atlantic Basin to discuss today.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A record amount of playing with little Miss
Molly in the last 24 hours...last night I was determined to watch the
Yankees-Red Sox playoff game, but every time I would get up to get another
cup of coffee, she would interpret that as playtime and would come at me
with several of her toys. I tried to ignore her. Not easy to do. Finally,
after the game, we had a long rambunctious play session, including
wrestling, pull rope, soccer and chase ball. I finally ran out of steam and
migrated to the king-sized bed. Molly took a flying leap and landed right in
the middle of the bed with one of her balls in her mouth still wanting to
play...on a walk at dusk, she approached a big leaf with much apprehension.

It was almost dark and she couldn't tell if it was friend or foe. She
finally slowly walked a big circle around the leaf. Of course I was
laughing. Further up the track, she saw an animal in the distance but
couldn't make it out. It turned out to be a new community cat. When she
finally determined that, she gave me a semi-whiplash. But the cat
disappeared in the darkness. Life goes on.

Details are a little complex over the next three days, but the bottom line
is that we are still looking at the coolest air of the season in here by the
end of the week.

Today, we will mention only an outside risk of a shower with little in the
day of dynamic forcing. The sun will break out at times, but temperatures
will be cooler with highs only in the mid 60s along with a cool westerly
breeze.

A stronger front is now forecast to pass through Alabama late tomorrow
night. Clouds will thicken tomorrow, and a period of showers and possibly a
thunderstorm is likely late tomorrow and tomorrow night. Then, the showers
will end early in the day on Friday, with much cooler air rolling into the
state during the day Friday. It looks like the best chance of showers will
come from about 5:00 tomorrow afternoon through 7:00 a.m. Friday.

Temperatures will hold in the 50s for much of the day on Friday, with a
chilly breeze out of the northwest. It now looks like our coolest morning
will come early Saturday, with low temperatures into the mid 40s over most
of north and central Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: Another front will slip in here early next week with another
chance of showers Monday night into Tuesday.

TUESDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included .90" at
Hamilton, .62" at Black Creek (in Etowah county near Gadsden), and .55" at
Clanton. At the ABC 33/40 Weather Center in Riverchase, our total was only
0.03".

TIME CHANGE: We go back on standard time at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 31.
The sunset time on October 31 will be 4:56 p.m. CST, so trick or treaters
can get an early start.

SHARP COOL DOWN AT WEEK'S END: The temperatures we're experiencing now are
quite comfortable, but nights will be a lot chillier starting Thursday night
and into the weekend. At that time, temperatures will be at their lowest
level generally since last spring. We expect low to mid 40s both Friday and
Saturday morning.

But let's revert to the present. We'll still have a chance of some showers
tonight and Wednesday. It will start turning cooler Wednesday. We will have
another cold front coming through on Thursday with windy conditions at times
along with scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorms. We think Friday
and Saturday should be dry.

On some of the ridges around North Alabama, the high temperature on Thursday
may barely reach 60.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A large low pressure area was way out in the Atlantic
moving toward the SW at 10-15 mph. It is not tropical in nature now, but it
may become sub-tropical later when it reaches warmer ocean waters.

TUESDAY TIDBITS: One of our readers sent us some beautiful digital
photographs of autumn foliage in Saranac Lake in Upstate New York. The
colors are at a peak there...so now I'm getting very excited about autumn
color here...still don't know how good it will be...the lowest in the lower
48 this morning was 16 at Hahn's Peak, Colorado...in Alaska, it was minus 4
at Anaktuvuk Pass...on October 12, 1954, Hurricane Hazel lambasted Haiti
with 125 mph winds. Many villages were totaled and 1,000 people
died...interesting thing happened on this date in 1978 when lightning struck
an automobile in Indianapolis. The bolt of lightning blew out all the tires
and destroyed the electrical system, but the driver was not injured.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: An interesting story from Carla McFarland-one
of our subscribers. Please excuse the extra length. Several months ago,
Carla's father obtained two ducks for her children (his grandchildren). He
thought it would be a wonderful experience to see them grow from ducklings
to full size birds. The children named them Aflac and Daisy. When it was
time for the ducks to go to the lake to live, her father and son took them.

The ducks were afraid of the other ducks. Eventually, they got into the
water and were quite happy. Later that day, her father and mother went back
to the lake to check on them. Aflac recognized her dad's truck and came
running and quacking like there was no tomorrow. Her dad started calling
Daisy. Each time he said her name, Aflac got louder, apparently alarmed. Her
dad followed Aflac and saw Daisy trying to get to him. When he picked her
up, she had a broken leg. It appeared that Aflac was happy as a lark that he
got help for Daisy and went back into the lake. Daisy rode home as happy as
could be. Six weeks after Daisy broke her leg, she sleeps in the doghouse
with the dogs and she follows Carla's dad everywhere he goes. If the windows
are rolled down, "he" will jump up in the truck and hope to go for a ride.
You see, Daisy turned out to be a drake. Her dad got so attached to Day Z.
Her parents go back to the lake several times a week to see Aflac. He now
has 40-50 ducks at the lake who are his friends and they all come running
and quacking at feeding time for a big picnic. Bottom line, having two ducks
for pets has been a wonderful experience for the entire family. Makes me
think of the time that I raised a 4-H Club pig and cried when it was time
for him to go to market. Life goes on.

...Clouds Hang Tough...

Don't look for much sunshine around here through mid-week as
residual moisture from former tropical storm Matthew hangs around. A few
scattered showers will remain possible today in the moist air with
temperatures reaching the mid to upper 70s in most spots.

GETTING CHILLY: A cooling trend begins tomorrow, and by Thursday the
coldest air so far this season will arrive. Very cold air aloft is expected
over the northern half of Alabama on Thursday, and we would not be surprised
to see some small hail from the showers that form. Temperatures on Thursday
will be in the 50s much of the day with a very chilly northwest wind.

By Friday morning, we expect temperatures in the 40 to 45 degree
range over the northern half of the state. At this moment, it looks like
there will be enough wind and cloud cover to prevent the mercury from
reaching the 30s in most spots. At this point we expect Friday to be
rain-free.

WEEKEND PEEK: A secondary cold front is expected to move through on
Saturday, but for now the air looks fairly dry and we will not mention any
showers. Temperatures will remain below normal over the weekend, but it
looks like the coldest air behind the secondary front will push more to the
east, passing north of Alabama.

By Monday of next week, yet another front approaches which could
trigger a few showers.

IVAN SPECIAL: Don't forget ABC 33/40's one hour primetime special
Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. called "Face to Face With Hurricane Ivan". I
will be live in Gulf Shores, and we will show you far the recovery effort
has come, and look back at the storm's arrival through our crew that covered
Ivan on the coast. We will also have more details on our Ivan DVD to be
released next week.

MATTHEW'S AFTERMATH: For most of Alabama, Mr. Tropical Storm Matthew did
not amount to much. He never was a real bona fide tropical storm. He was
more of a hybrid between a regular storm and a tropical one. This afternoon
his remains were over Arkansas and spreading locally heavy rain northward
into the Central Plains.

Unfortunately, a big percentage of Alabama did not get much needed
beneficial rain from Matthew. By far the best rainfall amounts were over on
the extreme west and SW parts of the state. Livingston, for example,
received 1.50 inches in the last 24 hours and there were locally heavy
amounts in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.

There's a lot of residual moisture hanging around in the wake of Matthew, so
we will see occasional showers off and on for the next couple of days. Most
of the showers tonight will be scattered and light and we could even see
some patchy fog and drizzle toward daybreak.

By Thursday, the weather will look more interesting as a pronounced cold
front approaches. The front will set off some scattered showers and possibly
a thunderstorm on Thursday, followed by noticeably cooler Thursday night.
Look for early morning temperatures in the mid 40s Friday-our best shot of
cool air since last spring.

TROPICAL WEATHER: With Matthew's remnants fading away, the only other
thing on the board is subtropical storm Nicole about 550 miles south of Nova
Scotia. She will continue moving north and should not affect any part of the
USA.

MONDAY RAMBLES: It was 96 in Death Valley Sunday afternoon for the USA's
hottest...down here where the 48 states are neighbors, it was 21 in Stanley,
Idaho this morning...last time I was there, both the speed limit and
population was 35...in Alaska, the low was 7 at Anaktuvuk Pass...at the
northernmost weather station in North America, it was 9 below at
Alert...Matthew dumped 5.20 inches of rain on Vicksburg.

DID YOU KNOW? That Seattle does not get nearly as much rain per year as
Birmingham, even though we think of them as having a lot of rain. Their
normal yearly rainfall is 38.60 inches as compared to 54 inches in
Birmingham. On this date in 1991, Seattle had gone 40 days in a row with no
rain.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Tomorrow I want to do a brief story about a
family who had two ducks for pets and it was a perfectly delightful
experience...little Miss Molly cannot complain about having plenty of
playtime in the last 24 hours...my little tongue was hanging out from
chasing her around and around the couch with her trying to keep her ball
away from me. After this went on for about 30 minutes and we wrestled,
played soccer and pull rope, she suddenly stopped, went kerplop on the floor
and passed out. She can shift from vigorous play to sleep seemingly in 30
seconds. Life goes on.

...More Showers Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! How 'bout those Braves? It was almost too much for my heart
to stand. A pivotal fourth game, down 5-2 to the powerful Houston Astros.
But they pulled it out to force a final Game 5 in Atlanta this afternoon.
MATTHEW'S RAINS: Well, the rain finally arrived in Birmingham during the
afternoon hours. The disorganized storm weakened quickly after landfall
near Houma, Louisiana and the system began to unravel, its rain shield
diminishing in intensity. Rainfall amounts have been light, averaging less
than a quarter of an inch over most areas. The heavier rainfall fell over
Southwest Alabama, where amounts averaged an inch, with some two inch
amounts.

INTO MIDWEEK: Alabama will remain in a relatively moist and unsettled
airmass into midweek, thanks to Matthew. Occasional disturbances will
interact with this soupy atmosphere to produce periodic showers. Skies will
remain mostly cloudy for the next few days, but hopefully there will be some
periods of sunshine mixed in with the clouds.

CHANGES AHEAD: We have been advertising a change to cooler for late in the
week, and that looks to be on track. Cold air will be massing in Canada
early in the week and should be transported south by a deep trough starting
around midweek. This cooler air will surge southward behind a strong cold
front. This front should arrive in Alabama on Thursday, heralded by some
showers and thunderstorms.

Readings behind the front will be in the 40s by Friday morning, with a
repeat performance on Saturday morning. Southerly winds will return quickly
on Saturday, allowing for a quick warm up. Daytime temperatures by Sunday
will be back in the upper 70s.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: Most people think of Seattle as being consistently
cold and rainy, but you may be amazed to know that more rain falls each year
in places like New York and Chicago. On this date, Seattle was recording
its' 40th straight day without measurable rainfall.

GOOD AFTERNOON: I have to admit, I love this gray kind of weather. Are
you like me? Oh, bright sunny days are wonderful, but give me a good 'ol
drizzly, gray day anytime. Kind of makes you want to pull the covers and
sleep in, but...

NO SLEEPING IN TODAY: Not with a tropical storm in the neighborhood.
Thanks to JB for getting up at 5 am and keeping tabs on Matthew for a couple
of hours. He has now moved inland over Louisiana and will be heading north
into Mississippi. (Matthew, that is, not JB!)

MATTHEW AND OUR WEATHER: Matthew was spreading a large shield of rain over
Mississippi and Alabama this afternoon. This mostly moderate rainfall will
continue to push across the area during the afternoon and evening hours. It
has shown signs of diminishing slightly in intensity, and the precipitation
should begin to taper off during the overnight hours.

The center of Matthew is moving into southern Mississippi. The official NHC
track carries the remnant low north northwest into Arkansas around the
periphery of an upper low over the southern Plains before turning it back to
the east ahead of an approaching trough. The GFS model has the storm moving
slowly north and then northeast into West Central Alabama Monday night.
We will forecast a continued chance of showers and occasional periods of
rain right on into Tuesday. In fact, we may even see a few showers on
Wednesday.

CHANGE TO COOLER AHEAD: A strong cold front will be approaching Alabama by
Thursday. This will spread an area of showers and thunderstorms into the
state. Behind the front, we will see the coldest air we have seen since
last spring. Low temperatures Friday and Saturday morning will average in
the middle 40s.

NICOLE: Last year, the National Hurricane Center started naming subtropical
storms. Subtropical storms are low pressure systems that have both
characteristics of a tropical cyclone (center warmer than surrounding air)
and an extratropical or mid-latitude cyclone (cold core.) They often
transition into pure tropical systems. You might think adding a category
would greatly increase the count of named storms, but so far that is not the
case. Each of the subtropical systems that have been named since the
change in procedure has gone on to become completely tropical. Will Nicole?
Probably. Located about 135 miles west of Bermuda and moving to the north,
the storm has caused tropical storm warnings to be issued for the island.
Nicole will threaten the Canadian Maritime provinces by Wednesday
ON THIS DATE IN 1979 Snow was reported over a widespread area from Maryland
into southern New England. Boston MA and Richmond VA recorded their
earliest measurable snowfall ever. Worcester, MA picked up over 7 inches,
the most snow ever recorded so early in the season. The world series game
in Baltimore had to be postponed. The temperature at Philadelphia PA at
mid-afternoon was cold enough to establish a new record low for the date!

...More Showers Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Matthew's last hurrah came Saturday afternoon as the
sputtering tropical system weakened back into a tropical depression during
the morning hours, then regained tropical storm status during the afternoon.
By evening, the center was far removed from its thunderstorms which were
being blown well to the northeast by strong winds aloft from the southwest.
Still, ship reports indicated the system still had tropical storm force
winds. Mathew will move inland early this morning on the Louisiana coast,
heading on a generally northward course that will carry it into Mississippi
today.

A broad area of rain will accompany the eastern side of the landfalling
system. This rain will move across the Alabama coast and into southern
sections of the state this morning. By early afternoon, showers will
overspread much of Central Alabama, with moderate rain over southern parts
of the state. By evening, much of the state should be seeing rain, but the
precipitation will taper off overnight as the system moves further inland.
It will be increasingly breezy, with easterly winds picking up into the 6-12
mph range today and averaging 15 mph with occasional high gusts this
evening.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Matthew's remnants will move only slowly northward, moving
to near the NW corner of Alabama Tuesday afternoon. Showers may stay with
us into Wednesday. A strong cold front will approach on Thursday, and
indications now are that it will have quite a bit of moisture to work with,
so we will call for showers and storms. It will turn sharply cooler for
the end of the week.

DEADLY SEASON: The Hurricane Season of 1780 was one of the worst in
recorded history, and the storm which destroyed the Windward Islands October
10-12 is the deadliest ever in recorded Atlantic history. It became known
simply as the "Great Hurricane of 1780." It is believed that 22,000
perished in its week long rampage. 9,000 died on the island of Martinique
and nearly 5,000 in Barbados. It was just one of three deadly hurricanes
that month. More in today's edition of Weather Talk.

ADDITIONAL MINOR WIND DAMAGE COULD OCCUR TO PREVIOUSLY DAMAGED
STRUCTURES AND ROOF TARPS MAY BE BLOWN OFF.

...RAINFALL AMOUNTS...
ONCE MATTHEW'S CENTER MOVES ASHORE OVER SOUTHERN LOUISIANA...EXPECT
THE PRECIPITATION AREA TO EXPAND IN AREAL COVERAGE. THE HEAVIEST
RAINFALL WILL OCCUR EAST OF MATTHEW'S CENTER AND WILL LIKELY EXTEND
INTO SOUTHWEST ALABAMA. A FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR MOBILE
AND BALDWIN COUNTIES THROUGH THIS EVENING. RAINFALL TOTALS BETWEEN
2 AND 4 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS WHERE
THUNDERSTORMS MOVE REPEATEDLY OVER THE SAME AREA.

.TORNADOES...
ISOLATED TORNADOES ARE POSSIBLE LATER TODAY. SOME OF THESE STORMS
MAY CONTAIN TORNADOES. THE TORNADO THREAT WILL FIRST INCREASE OVER
THE COASTAL WATERS THROUGH LATE MORNING AND THEN ALONG THE COASTAL
COUNTIES OF BY EARLY AFTERNOON. INDIVIDUAL STORMS WILL MOVE FROM
THE SOUTHEAST TO THE NORTHWEST ALONG RAINBANDS ASSOCIATED WITH
MATTHEW. STORMS THAT DEVELOP OVER INLAND AREAS COULD ALSO PRODUCE
TORNADOES.

...NEXT UPDATE...
THIS MAY POSSIBLY BE THE FINAL STATEMENT IF MATTHEW IS DOWNGRADED TO
A TROPICAL DEPRESSION LATER THIS MORNING. OTHERWISE...THE NEXT
SCHEDULED STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED AROUND 1130 AM CDT.
