...Rain Tonight; Then Much Cooler...
Get ready for the coolest air so far this fall season. Before it arrives, we
will deal with a round of showers and thunderstorms late this afternoon and
tonight as a strong upper trough sweeps through the deep south. The air will
be cool and stable, so severe weather is not likely. But, I would not be
shocked to hear of some reports of small hail because of very cold air
aloft. The best chance of rain will come from about 5:00 this afternoon
through 7:00 a.m. tomorrow.
After early morning temperatures in the mid 40s tomorrow, the mercury will
struggle to reach the mid 50s during the day with a very chilly west wind,
which will gust to 25 to 30 mph on the ridges across north Alabama. The sun
should begin to appear during the afternoon as the air begins to dry out.
You will need a warm jacket for high school football games tomorrow night
with temperatures mostly in the low 50s. And, we will go back into the 40s
early Saturday morning.
The weekend will be dry with a good deal of sunshine on Saturday and Sunday
and a slow warming trend.
NEXT WEEK: A cold front will approach Alabama from the north early next
week, but it will become parallel to the upper air flow and is expected to
stall out somewhere over Arkansas and Tennessee. This could keep much of the
rain north of us at least through Tuesday.
ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: A tornado touched down last night near Elm City,
NC. Another tornado was reported near Scurry, TX. There was no major damage
from either storm. Wisdom, MT was the coldest place in the nation early
yesterday with 13 degrees. Some snow is likely tomorrow in northern
Minnesota.
