...Showers, Storms Overnight..

Clouds are more entrenched this morning than expected across Central
Alabama. They are the result of a strong easterly flow between high
pressure over New England and a vigorous little low east of Florida.
Those clouds will hang tough through much of the day as we get ready
for the next weather system. A strong upper trough is moving on the
Plains of middle America today. Ahead of it, a complex frontal
structure extends from Minnesota to Texas. A surface low is over the
Red River Valley of Texas and Oklahoma. That low will move rapidly
northeast into the Great Lakes states by morning.

OUR FORECAST: This afternoon will be mostly cloudy with a wide range
of temperatures across Central Alabama, from middle 50s in the east to
middle 60s in the west. Our winds will shift to a more southeasterly
direction and increase in velocity. This will allow for a short
period of moisture return, but it will be too limited for significant
rain or storms. The powerful front will produce a line of showers and
storms this afternoon to our west that will move our way. Showers
will reach western sections of the state by 6 p.m. or so this
evening. The activity will sweep across the state during the
overnight hours. There is a chance for some damaging winds with the
line as it passes, so be alert to rapidly changing weather conditions
tonight.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Showers should be moving out to the
east tomorrow morning. Behind the system, much colder and drier air
will spread into the state on strong westerly and northwesterly
winds. Skies should clear fairly quickly during the morning and early
afternoon. Temperatures will struggle to reach 50 degrees, especially
over western sections. Look for a light freeze by Monday morning.

THE HOLIDAY WEEK: Monday looks to be dry and cool. By
Monday night, another disturbance will be approaching from the west.
It will deliver a few showers during the overnight hours that could
give Santa a damp ride. Look for showers on Christmas Day, with cool
and wet conditions through the morning hours. The afternoon hours
should be improved. The forecast becomes increasingly uncertain as we
head through time. Another system will be in the cards for Wednesday
with a good chance of rain. Thursday looks like a dry and seasonably
cool day with another system riding our way by Friday.

VOODOOLAND: The fast, progressive upper level pattern
continues into the New Year, with systems due in here about every
three days. Indications are that there could be a big wet weather
system for New Years Eve. But our track record with "big" wet weather
systems is not good recently.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Incredible cold across the United
States. 135 cities broke their record lows for the date, including 35
that set record lows for the entire month of December. It was -23F at
Kansas City MO, -26F at Concordia KS and -27F at Goodland KS to
establish all time record lows for those locations. Chinook winds
later that same day at Cutbank MT helped to warm the temperature 74
degrees from a morning low of -34F to an afternoon high of 4F.

...Welcome Winter...

It is officially winter now. The Winter Solstice occurred at 12:06
a.m. CST this morning. Meteorological winter begins December 1st,
marking the coldest three months of the year.
But astronomically, winter began this morning.

DOESN"T FEEL LIKE IT THIS MORNING: Temperatures are running some
five to ten degrees above normal this morning across Central Alabama.
On the weather maps this morning, low pressure is off the east coast
of Florida. Big high pressure is over New England. The counter
clockwise flow around the low and the clockwise flow around the
anticyclone resulted in an easterly wedge that pumped a cool, moist
flow into eastern sections of the state. Clouds advanced as far west
as I-65 by late afternoon. After some sunshine in the Birmingham
area, the clouds moved in. In Tuscaloosa, where it remained sunny,
the mercury rose to nearly 70 degrees.

TODAY: Our winds will be out of the east and southeast today and
clouds will be abundant. Temperatures will be mild, starting off in
the 40s, but rising to near 60 by lunchtime, topping off in the lower
to middle 60s. Any areas that get more sunshine will top out near 70
degrees again. Those winds will be on the fresh side, averaging some
7-15 mph, but gusting occasionally to 20 mph. Our next weather system
is a cold front that will pass through Alabama late tonight and early
Sunday. Showers may reach western sections late this afternoon, but
the rest of the area should be dry today.

LET' S GO BOWLING: The Papajohns.com Bowl kicks off at noon today
at Legion Field. The bowl, which features representatives of
Conference USA and the Big East will pit Southern Miss against
twentieth ranked Cincinnati. There is no better hot dog in sports
that the Legion Field and Bryant-Denny dog. I have had Dodger Dogs
and Fenway Franks and bratwurst in Milwaukee, but nothing beats this
hot dog. Come join me in one and watch a great football game today.
Good weather, cloudy, a little breezy and mild with temperatures
around 60.

TONIGHT: Showers and storms will overspread the area tonight. Most
of the rainfall should be between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. It appears the
system will be moving too quickly for moisture to return, and the
chance of heavy rain or significant storms will be limited. Rainfall
amounts will be light, around one quarter inch on average. It will
become quite breezy during the evening with winds averaging 20 mph.

SUNDAY: Drier and cooler air will spread into the state tomorrow
behind the cold front. Temperatures will have a hard time reaching 50
degrees. Skies should clear during the day. By Monday morning,
readings will likely be below freezing.

HOLIDAY FORECAST: Monday will be cool and dry overall, with readings
right around
normal for this time of year. Highs will top out around 50. A
disturbance will pass to our north on Christmas Day, giving us clouds
and perhaps a shower, mainly during the afternoon hours, but no rain
of significance. Wednesday should feature a better chance of rain and
storms as a stronger disturbance passes through. Hope fully this
system will have some heft to it, with some decent rainfall amounts.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Snow in Tampa and Daytona Beach? Yes, it
really happened on this date as Florida experiences its most
widespread snowstorm in history. Two inches falls in Savannah, one of
only three times that snowfall in the city required a ruler for
measurement. Charleston SC picked up 3.9 inches of the white stuff.

============================================================

MORE WEATHER CHANGES AHEAD: We will begin the weekend with relatively
comfortable weather tomorrow. After low clouds and fog during the
morning, we expect a few intervals of sunshine during the day with a
high in the mid 60s, almost ten degrees above average values for late
December. While we can't rule out a shower somewhere tomorrow
afternoon, we figure most of the state will be dry during the daytime
hours. For the Papajohns.com Bowl tomorrow afternoon at Legion Field,
which will feature a battle between Southern Mississippi and
Cincinnati, the weather should be partly to mostly cloudy with
temperatures between 60 and 65 degrees. The chance of a shower is
rather minimal.

RAIN RETURNS TOMORROW NIGHT: Another weather system will bring rain
back to Alabama tomorrow night into Sunday morning. At this point it
looks like the best chance of rain will come from around midnight
tomorrow night through noon on Sunday. Average rain amounts of one-
quarter to one-half inch look likely at this point, and there is no
significant chance of severe weather due to the lack on instability.
As the rain moves out tomorrow, colder air moves into the state.
Temperatures could begin to fall over Northwest Alabama tomorrow
afternoon, with some communities dipping into the 40s with a brisk
northwest wind.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: We expect a dry and cool day on Monday. We will begin
the day near the freezing mark, with a high in the mid 50s, which is
very close to average values for this time of the year. On Christmas
Day, clouds will begin to return, and there is some risk of a little
light rain by afternoon as the next wave approaches Alabama from the
west. Temperatures on Tuesday will remain cool; we are forecasting a
morning low in the mid 30s, followed by a high close to 50 degrees.
Rain will be more likely by Wednesday, and perhaps Thursday of next
week.

LOOKING FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS? The vast snow cover around the Upper
Midwest, the Great Lakes and the Northeast U.S. will stay in place
through Christmas Day; in fact many of these areas will be picking up
new snow over the weekend. On Christmas morning, the best chance of
snow actually falling will be around the Rocky Mountains. Denver
should have a nice, snowy Christmas morning. If you want snow for
Christmas here in Alabama, it will pretty much have to happen in a
dream, as usual.

BIG TIME COLD: Cold air continues to deepen across Alaska… Fort
Yukon...Huslia...and Noatak all reported 51 degrees below zero this
morning. Yesterday's high in Bettles, Alaska was 29 below zero.

J.B. TAKES THE DAY OFF: J.B. Elliott, the great Alabama weather
legend, is taking a well deserved day off today; he will return
Monday. I will be away next week, spending some time with my family.
On behalf of all of us at ABC 33/40 and The Weather Company, we have a
sincere hope that you and your family enjoy God's richest blessings
this Chistmas!

..More Rain Over The Weekend...

THE WEEKEND WET AT TIMES: Alabama will be in-between waves today, so
the day should be dry and mild with a partly sunny sky after some
morning clouds and fog. We expect a high in the mid to upper 60s
today, about ten degrees above the average values for late December in
Alabama. But, wet weather will be back over the weekend.

At this point, it looks like the best chance of rain will come
generally from 6:00 p.m. tomorrow through 9:00 a.m. Sunday. Rain
totals are expected to average around one-half inch for the northern
half of Alabama, although isolated spots could see more. Some thunder
is possible during the rain, but severe thunderstorms are not expected
to be a problem due to the lack of instability. Cooler air will filter
into the state Sunday with a brisk and chilly northwest wind.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: For now, we expect a dry day on Monday, Christmas Eve,
with a high in the upper 50s. Then, clouds return on Christmas day,
and some light rain could move into the state during the afternoon
hours. Periods of rain are likely Tuesday night into Wednesday. The
hope for any risk of snow at Christmas continue to dim, as usual in
Alabama!

SOLSTICE LATE TONIGHT: The winter season officially begins late
tonight, in terms of astronomy. The winter solstice will come at
exactly 12:08 a.m. CST… meaning today and tomorrow will be the
shortest days of the year in terms of the number of daylight hours.
After tomorrow, we will slowly have longer days and shorter nights
until the summer solstice on June 20, 2008.

GRAVITY WAVE: A gravity wave on the back edge of the big rain mass
across Alabama yesterday was responsible for downed trees and power
lines across about two dozen counties across the northern half of the
state. At one point 18,000 people in the Birmingham metro area were
without power due to the high winds. The highest gust measured around
the ABC 33/40 SKYCAM network was 53 mph at the Inverness site, atop
the Wingate Inn overlooking U.S. 280 in northern Shelby County.

THURSDAY'S RAIN: The heaviest rain was over South Alabama, where a few
severe thunderstorms developed. Rain totals yesterday include 2.89" at
the Mobile Regional Airport, 1.36" at Evergreen, 1.16" at Demopolis, .
91" at Centreville, .90" at Carbon Hill, .81" at Jasper, .67" at
Alabaster, .58" at Inverness, and .54" at the ABC 33/40 Weather Center
in Riverchase.

HODGEPODGE: An EF2 tornado touched down near Brookhaven, Mississippi
yesterday morning produce extensive damage and a few injuries.
Amazingly cold air continues to build over Alaska; the coldest spot in
the nation yesterday was Galena, Alaska with 54 degrees below zero. At
Fairbanks, the high was 36 below zero. New Orleans was soaked
yesterday was 2.06". Other totals around the Southeast U.S. included
1.07" at Memphis and 1.38" at Jackson, MS.

===================================================================

MORE RAIN LATER SATURDAY: It has been a rather wild day across
Alabama. A Tornado Watch was posted for several counties in South/
Central and SW Alabama. A powerful line of thunderstorms moved east
out of Southern Mississippi and into SW Alabama. There were a number
of reports of severe weather across South Mississippi. A lot of trees
were uprooted, some homes lost their roof and a few mobile homes were
overturned. There were several injuries. This afternoon, a fairly rare
weather event began in West/Central and NW Alabama. It is called a
gravity wave. It occurs during outflow after a large solid rain and
thunderstorm area has moved out of the way. It developed around 1:00
this afternoon in Marion and Lamar Counties where there were a number
of reports of numerous trees down and power lines down. Later the NWS
extended that caution further eastward. By midafternoon, most of the
heavier rain had shifted east into Central Alabama with the strongest
thunderstorms still over the extreme south.

Showers and storms will continue moving east and diminishing this
evening ending in most areas later tonight.

We believe that most of Friday will be dry with temperatures
recovering to the mid and upper 60s. The weather will not stay one way
very long. Another storm system will be moving eastward and we look
for some more showers to arrive in Central Alabama late Saturday.
Showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous Saturday night and
extend into Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, a cold front will race eastward across Alabama Sunday
morning ending the showers and bringing breezy and colder weather. By
Monday morning, the thermometer will drop to a more sensible 35 with
near freezing in the North Alabama valleys.

HOW DID WE DO ON RAIN TODAY? Unfortunately, the big blob of intense
storms and heavy rain down over the south half of the state cut off
some of our moisture from our dear friend the Gulf of Mexico. By far,
the more beneficial rain was down over the south part. However, there
were also some heavier amounts over West/Central Alabama.

Our next system will give us another good chance of rain Saturday
night and early Sunday. Many communities should get ½ inch or more
with this system.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: It is really, really cold in Alaska and it is
widespread. It is clearly the coldest weather we have seen so far this
season. This morning the temperature dropped to a bitter 53 below zero
at Chandalar Lake. That is over in Eastern Alaska near the Yukon
Territory of NW Canada. That is the area we watch more closely than
any for big arctic outbreaks that may head south. The wind chill was
68 below zero at good old Deadhorse today.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My son came by very early this morning,
rang the doorbell and came in speaking loudly. I had put him up to it
because I wanted to get everybody up early. That has been difficult to
do with all the folks here. You should have seen Little Miss Molly.
That doorbell was like lighting a firecracker under her. She came
roaring out of her bed jumping on everyone. Life goes on.....

===================================================================

...A Good Rain Event For Alabama Today...

TWO BIG RAIN EVENTS AHEAD: A strong short wave in the upper
atmosphere, and will swing across Alabama with periods of rain and a
few thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. The computer has been a
little more aggressive with expected rain with this system, and
accordingly we will forecast most Alabama communities to see anywhere
from one-half to one inch. A few thunderstorms are possible as well,
but a major problem with severe weather is not expected. The greatest
chance of strong to severe storms will come over far Southwest Alabama
over Baldwin and Mobile counties.

We will be in-between weather systems tomorrow, so the sky should
become partly sunny with a high up in the mid 60s, well above the
average high of 58 for December 21.

ANOTHER RAINMAKER OVER THE WEEKEND: A vigorous upper air system will
move in our direction, and bring another generous round of rain and
thunderstorms to the state by Saturday night and Sunday morning. The
computer models have trended slower with the weekend system, so it now
looks like the best chance of rain will come from around 12:00
midnight Saturday night to 12:00 noon Sunday. Like the system
tomorrow, rain amounts of one-half to inch are expected over the
weekend, and the best chance of severe weather will remain over the
far southern part of Alabama.

MODEL MADNESS DURING CHRISTMAS WEEK: Looks like the original idea of
dry and cold weather for Christmas Eve and Christmas day has flown out
the window. Global models are now showing another strong upper air
wave moving through Alabama early next week, and it looks like this
will have the potential to bring rain to our state Monday night and
Tuesday. Santa could very well need an umbrella this year here across
the Deep South. Later in the week, another rain producing system is
seen around December 28-29. In this active wave train pattern, it is
very hard to models to resolve any specific weather event beyond seven
days.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: Record cold in Florida. Record cold afternoon
high temperatures were set at Miami with 55 degrees and 58 degrees at
Key West. The temperature struggled to reach 44 degrees at Tampa,
shattering the minimum record high temperature for the date, and
coming close to the all-time coolest high temperature for the Tampa
area of 38, set on Christmas day in 1983.

ACROSS THE FROZEN TUNDRA: Big time cold air is building over Alaska.
Yesterday's low in the nation was a frigid 51 degrees below zero at
Huslia, Alaska. The
high at Bettles was 38 degrees below zero, which followed a morning
low of 43 below. Rain was widespread across California yesterday;
totals included 1.16" at Los Angeles and 1.13" at Fresno.

TWO GOOD RAIN EVENTS NEXT FEW DAYS: As we continue to struggle
through one of the greatest droughts in history, we grasp with straws
any evidence of getting some good rain amounts. We have two chances of
getting a good rain in the next few days. The first event will be
mainly from tomorrow afternoon through Thursday night. We look for an
average of between ½ and 2/3 of an inch of rain across Central Alabama.

A temporary break on Friday. Another batch of showers and
thunderstorms, mainly Saturday afternoon and continuing Saturday
night. A few of those showers may linger into Sunday morning. Some of
our latest model data is now hinting at some wet weather for Christmas
Day. We will address and finetune that in a later forecast.

A warm front will start northward across Louisiana and SW Alabama
tonight bringing in a good supply of moist air. A low should be
centered over Arkansas and Mississippi Thursday. That is the main
source of our rain event. On Saturday, a low over Texas will move NE
quickly pulling a cold front across Alabama on Sunday, so we will have
a good chance of showers and maybe some thunderstorms, mainly Saturday
afternoon and night and extending into Sunday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: It is really getting cold in Alaska. The
temperature dipped to a bitter 49 below zero this morning at Huslia.
The wind chill today has been as low as 70 below across Northern
Alaska. The high in Fairbanks yesterday was 6 below and that is the
third latest in 103 years that they had to wait this long to have a
high temperature below zero. This is quite a change for Alaska. The
first half of December averaged an impressive 13 degrees warmer than
normal at McGrath. At Barrow, on the north coast, the sun will not
rise again until 1:12 p.m. on January 23. Stateside the cold spot this
morning was Presque Isle, Maine with 20 below zero. The Storm
Prediction Center has a slight risk for severe weather for most of
Louisiana and part of East Texas this afternoon. Tomorrow, the slight
risk area shifts eastward to affect most of Louisiana, the south half
of Mississippi and even into the Mobile area.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: This is a real early look and definitely subject to
change. It looks like mild temperatures in the 60s for the Papa
John.com bowl game at Legion Field in Birmingham Saturday. The game is
between Cincinnati and Southern Miss. At some point during the day,
showers should arrive. We will be more precise later.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Recent news reports say that the dog
that was skinned alive in North Cullman County a couple of weeks ago
may not have been the victim of a deranged person. Instead, he may
have gotten caught in a piece of machinery. I sure hope that no person
could stoop that low. For the third night in a row, Little Miss Molly
had a nightmare in the middle of the night. Have tried my best to find
more time to play with her the last few days. She misses me. I came
home from an errand yesterday. My grandson offered Molly a treat,
which is normal when some of us come home. She refused to take it from
him and insisted that I give it to her. Good sign that she really
misses me. Life goes on.....

...Moisture Levels Increase Today...

DROUGHT MONITOR: Lets begin with a check of the serious lack of rain
we have across Alabama… rain deficiencies for 2007 include 31.32" at
Tuscaloosa, 30.28" at Anniston, and 24.71" at Birmingham. There is no
doubt 2007 will be the driest year on record in Alabama; Birmingham's
total since January 1 is 27.36"; the current driest year on record
(since 1900) is 1904, when the total for the year was 34.32". It is
almost impossible for us to get seven inches of rain in the next 12
days.

RAIN IN OUR FUTURE: We will mention a chance of widely scattered
showers today (mainly this morning) with the tail end of an upper
trough passing through here, but most communities will remain dry.
Rain is much more likely tomorrow as a strong wave approaches from the
west; at this point it looks like much of the state will receive
around one-half inch of rain, with isolated amounts to one inch. A few
thunderstorms are possible, but severe weather is not expected due to
the lack of instability. The rain will end tomorrow night, and Friday
will be dry and mild with a partly sunny sky and a high in the low
60s.

WEEKEND PEEK: A strong storm system will organize over the middle of
the nation this weekend, and will bring a nice round of showers and
storms to Alabama Saturday afternoon and into Saturday night. This one
should bring rain totals of one-half to one inch, along with the
possibility of some strong thunderstorms. The best chance of severe
storms will be cover the far southern part of the state where the
instability values will be higher. At this time it looks like the best
chance of rain will come from around 3:00 p.m. Saturday through 3:00
a.m. Sunday. Following the rain, expect a sharp change to colder
weather on Sunday with strong north winds and temperatures holding
steady in the low to mid 40s. It will be a blustery day.

CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE: We are still looking at dry and cold weather
for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Early morning lows will be in the
20s, with afternoon highs in the 46 to 51 degree range. The GFS (our
primary American global model) brings a batch of precipitation into
Alabama the day afternoon Christmas (Wednesday of next week), with a
chance of some light rain, and maybe even a chance of a few snow
flakes over the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama. A stronger
system shows up in the December 28-29 time frame with some hope for
beneficial rain for Alabama. The weather pattern looks very active
into early January.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Bitterly cold air continues to build over
Alaska; the coldest spot in the nation yesterday was Huslia, Alaska
with 44 degrees below zero. Today's forecast high in Fairbanks is 35
below zero. Coldest in the continental U.S. was Whitefield, NH with 19
below, along with a very thick blanket of snow on the ground. In fact,
51 percent of the "lower 48" is covered by snow, an impressive
percentage for so early in the season.

NOT AS COLD TONIGHT: Yes, it was cold across Alabama again this
morning. In some areas, especially east, it was colder this morning
than yesterday morning. Here are a few selected lows:

16 Hamilton
18 Valley Head, Muscadine
19 Jasper, Sylacauga
20 Ashland, Centreville, Scrougout, Gaylesville
21 Cottondale, Remlap
24 Moody, Pinson, Clanton, Decatur, Alexander City

This was also a morning with temperature inversions. It was 14 degrees
warmer atop Mt. Cheaha with 36 than it was in Mumford not far away
with 24.

It will not be as cold tonight. A rather broad band of cloudiness to
our west will slowly spread eastward overnight. There could even be a
sprinkle, although we do not have it in the forecast.

TWO RAIN EVENTS: While we will have a slight chance of showers
Wednesday, there will be a much better chance on Thursday, which would
also include a few thunderstorms. We believe that a good part of this
area will get around ½ inch of rain. Turning dry again on Friday only
to quickly go back to scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday and
Saturday night. We believe that second rain event will occur mostly
Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. Meanwhile, temperatures will
stay fairly comfortable considering it is late December. By Thursday,
the highs should be around 60 and even in the mid 60s on Saturday. We
look for cooler weather Sunday as the rain ends early in the day and
clearing.

THE RAIN SCORECARD: The 2007 rain deficit as of today had reached an
amazing 31.16 inches at Tuscaloosa Airport and 30.15 at Anniston. We
can almost give you a written money back guarantee that 2007 will go
down in history as our driest year ever. Then we look westward
lustfully at Oklahoma City, where they now have an excess of 22 inches
having received 56.84 inches this year.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The snow survey today showed that 51% of the
lower 48 states had a snow cover down from 57% yesterday. There is a
heavy snow pack in many of the western mountains. A couple of
examples: 207 inches on the ground at Dollarhide Summit, Idaho and 106
inches at Crazyman Flat, Oregon. Those are remote areas with automated
stations that report snow pack. In the NE, much of the area is still
heavily snow covered. 22 inches on the ground at Caribou, Maine.
Coldest temperature this morning included 19 below zero at Whitefield,
New Hampshire and 36 below at Bettles and Nuiqsut, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the second night in a row, Little
Miss Molly had a nightmare around 2:30 a.m. She squeaked like a mouse
and suddenly jerked. I pulled her over and loved her and settled her
down. There were 14 humans sleeping here last night, including Little
Miss Molly. We have a large living area and the traffic resembled the
intersection of US-280 and I-459. When I went to bed at 11, Molly
strongly petitioned me to put her up on the bed out of all of the
noise and confusion. Life goes on. Molly loves a quiet and restful
atmosphere.....

...A Slow Warming Trend Begins...

SLOW WARMING TREND: No record warmth around here anytime soon, but
temperatures will begin a slow warming trend this afternoon as we
climb into the mid to upper 50s with a partly sunny sky. Clouds will
thicken tonight in advance of a weak upper air impulse, and we will
mention an outside risk of a shower tomorrow thanks to this feature,
but most Alabama communities will remain dry. The best chance of rain
this week comes on Thursday with a stronger wave rolling in from the
west; looks like we can expect around 1/2 inch of rain Thursday with a
few thunderstorms possible as well. Then, a slot of drier air settles
back into the state on Friday. But, the wave train is very active, and
the weather will stay changeable through the rest of December.

WEEKEND PEEK: A fairly vigorous weather system will bring another
round of rain and thunderstorms to Alabama late Saturday, Saturday
night, and early Sunday morning. The latest guidance suggests rain
with this system will be somewhere between one-half and one inch.
There might even be some strong thunderstorms involved, but
instability values will be marginal for a major threat. The best
chance of severe storm, most likely, will be over the southern third
of the state.

DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS? Best thing to do is hop on an airplane
and head for a city like Chicago, Cleveland, Buffalo, or Burlington,
Vermont. A huge blanket of snow covers much of the Midwest, the Great
Lakes, and the Northeast U.S., and it isn't going anywhere through
Christmas. In fact, more snow is likely in these regions with the
weekend storm. They will be digging out for many days to come. Here in
Alabama, the weather looks very peaceful for Christmas Eve and
Christmas Day, with cool and dry weather along with temperatures near
normal; highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s.

OUR WHITE CHRISTMAS HISTORY: For Birmingham, where nearly 100 years of
weather records exist, there has never been a White Christmas in the
classic sense. Perhaps the closest resemblance to a White Christmas in
Birmingham was December, 1985. Flurries falling on Christmas Eve and
early Christmas morning lightly dusted some areas, but snow was not
deep enough to measure.Eight other trace snowfall events occurring in
1961, 1963, 1966, 1980, 1989, 1990, 1993, and 1995 were reported at
the Birmingham International Airport on either December 24th or 25th.
Weather records show that 5.5 inches of snow fell at the city office
on December 22, 1929. On December 24th, there was still 2.5 inches of
snow on the ground at 7 PM. However, most of the snow melted Christmas
Day when the temperature climbed to 51 degrees. (thanks to the
Birmingham NWS for these stats).

ROAMING: Cold air continues to deepen across Alaska; yesterday's high
in Fairbanks was 11 below zero, after a low of 26 below. The warmest
temperature in the nation yesterday was only 69 degrees, recorded at
Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

============================================================

GOOD CHANCE OF SHOWERS MIDWEEK: Last night was overall the coldest
night that we have had since last spring. The old thermometer dropped
to freezing or lower all the way down to Mobile and several North and
Central Alabama locations had lows in the teens. We have posted an
extensive list of morning lows on the 33/40 Weather Blog, but here is
a small sampling.

16 in Hamilton and Cottondale
18 Concord and Remlap
19 Jasper
20 Mumford, Centreville, Sycamore, Pinson
22 Tuscaloosa, Decatur, Vinemont
23 Ft. Payne, Huntsville, Birmingham, Oneonta
26 Thomasville, Jackson, Geneva, Ashland, Alex City

This afternoon dew points were in the low 20s and upper teens. The sky
will be clear overnight with little or no wind and a high pressure
area slowly moving across Alabama. We believe temperatures will fall
to an average of about 26 across Central Alabama. There will be quite
a variation, as usual, between the colder valleys and ridges.

A milder trend will start Tuesday and by Wednesday, a few showers will
arrive. Those will increase Wednesday night. We believe that the best
time window for getting some rain from this next system will be
Wednesday night and Thursday. Rain amounts of ½ inch may be the norm
with this system. The next chance of decent rain will be with another
storm system over the weekend.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: At least there is some good news. In Oklahoma
City, for example, the high is expected to be around 58 tomorrow and
60 by Wednesday. This will get rid of a lot of ice. The Oklahoma EMA
Office reported this morning that 126,174 homes and business
establishments were still without power across the state of Oklahoma.
That is a bunch, but a lot less than just a few days ago. The Great
Lakes and NE are in a mess from the latest storm over the weekend. One
of the heavier snow totals that we could find was 18 inches at Peru,
New York and West Topsham, Vermont. Boston got 9 inches, Saranac Lake,
New York 12 inches and Chicago 10 inches. Flurries here in the
Southeast Saturday night and Sunday morning left 3 inches of snow atop
Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains with a low this morning of 3
above zero. If you were on Mt. Washington, New Hampshire today you
would be in a pickle. The wind has been gusting over 100 mph all day
with zero visibility in snow, blowing snow, freezing fog—you name it.
The temperature was as low as 15 below zero.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the first time last night, I
witnessed Miss Molly having a nightmare. About every 5 seconds she
would squeak like a baby mouse and shake a little. I would give
anything to know what she was dreaming about. It might have been
chasing the community cat or running for her life when a big dog came
charging through the hedgerow and tried to attack her when she was a
little puppy. That scared her so bad, that she jerked the majority
owner off her feet. She fell and broke her wrist. I finally pulled
Little Molly over against my chest and loved her. That briefly woke
her up and ended the nightmare. Life goes on.....

...A Chilly Start...

We're getting off to a chilly start across the area this morning with
temperatures in the 20s in most locations. Skies are clear and the
day will feature lots of sunshine. Temperatures will climb into the
lower to middle 50s by mid-afternoon. Tonight will be chilly again.
With clear skies and light winds, the mercury will fall into the upper
20s overnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Our upper level pattern is transitioning to zonal as
the big upper trough that plagued the Northeast on Sunday and brought
us the colder air lifts out. This means that the upper level winds
will be traveling generally from west to east with little amplitude in
the pattern. We will deal with a disturbance Tuesday night and
Wednesday in that flow. It will spread a few clouds over the area,
along with a slight chance of a shower over western and northern
sections, but those chances are extremely small thanks to the dry
airmass that will be in place. Temperatures tomorrow will rise into
the upper 50s and to near 60 on Wednesday.

By then, a stronger disturbance will be approaching from the west. It
will spread showers into the area on Thursday. The models have been
waffling about the rainfall potential with this system, but suffice to
say, it probably won't be significant. Another, even stronger
disturbance will sweep through on Saturday, brining another chance of
rain and probably thunderstorms. The models have been consistent
about the intensity of this system, but the timing has been all over
the board. Colder air will spread into the area on Sunday.

THE HOLIDAY WEEK: By Christmas Eve morning, it will likely be cold
and mostly cloudy as the low that brought the weekend rains gets
caught in a traffic jam over the mid-Atlantic. Santa should encounter
dry but seasonably cold conditions Christmas Eve night. Christmas Day
should be dry with an increasing southeasterly flow leading to a rise
in moisture levels. Another storm system will arrive Wednesday night
with a healthy dose of rainfall. Fortunately, we will be locked in a
progressive weather pattern with frequent storm systems. Look for
another one on Saturday the 29th and another for late on New Years
Eve. Also fortunately (except for the snow lovers in the crowd) no
really cold air is in sight.

END OF THE WORLD MESSAGE: On this date in 2003, a test message being
created during a training session was accidentally released over the
National Weather Service's transmission network. It warned that
temperatures were going to be heating up as the Earth had slipped out
of its orbit and was hurtling toward the sun. A correction was
quickly issued. Fortunately, no one took the message seriously.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: A major cold wave was engulfing the Central
U.S. The temperature at Oklahoma City, OK dropped below freezing on
the evening of the
17th and did not rise above 32 again until New Years Eve, a record
setting period of two weeks.

...Miserable Day..

This is the definition of a miserable day. The day started off gray
and windy with a thermometer that was still in freefall in the rear of
last evening's cold front. Most areas were in the 30s this morning.
A thick covering of stratocumulus clouds covers the state at the noon
hour. Slow clearing was starting to take place, but the mercury will
struggle to make it back to 40 degrees this afternoon because of the
clouds and strong cold air advection. Wind advisories are in effect
for the northwest winds that are averaging 15-25 mph and occasionally
gusting higher.

FIRE DANGER HIGH: The windy conditions and low dewpoints along with
the dry fuel conditions lead to a high danger of wildfire today across
the area. Outdoor burning should be avoided and any flame source
should be handled with extreme caution. Winds should lessen on Monday.

COLD TONIGHT: The mercury will fall into the middle 20s generally
across the area tonight. Some of the normally colder locations could
see the lower 20s, so keep that in mind if you have pets or property
that are cold sensitive.

THROUGH MIDWEEK: By tomorrow, the U.S. will be in a zonal upper
level pattern, meaning that the flow will be basically west to east
with no big troughs or ridges of high pressure. This makes fast
moving, generally weak disturbances rippling along in the flow. One
such disturbance will pass over Alabama Tuesday night into Wednesday.
This will lead to a slight chance of light showers over Alabama
Tuesday night into Wednesday. A slightly stronger system will impact
Alabama on Thursday, with a chance of showers and maybe a storm.
Rainfall amounts look bleak with the first system, and perhaps not
much better with the second. The GFS model is still advertising a
better rain system during the weekend, but has delayed the inset of
the rain to late Saturday night. Still some chance of strong storms
with this system.

HOLIDAY WEEK: After the weekend system, there could be a little
wraparound moisture early on Christmas Eve morning, with the
possibility of a few snow flurries over the north. Another rain
system is through of the 26th, followed by another on the 29th.

ON THIS DATE IN 1869: Wisconsin Congressman Halbert Paine introduced
a bill calling for the creation of a national telegraphic weather
service administered by the military. Paine had been approached by
Professor Increase Lapham of Milwaukee, a successful scientist,
businessman and civil engineer who saw the potential benefit of a
warning system for mariners on the Great Lakes. 1869 had been an
especially terrible year on the Great Lakes with nearly 2000
shipwrecks that year. Although many of the prominent meteorologists
of the day wanted the weather service to be under civilian control,
Paine felt that it was a project that required military discipline.
Paine, a retired Union Army General also wanted the service to be run
by General Albert Myer, who was chief of the Army Signal Office and
had good political connections. So Myer began putting the plan
together and the following February, President Grant signed the bill
into law.
