...Busy Weather Office...

Things are going to be busy over the next few days in the old weather
office. Lots to talk about on this Saturday morning, so let's get
started…

GENERALLY DRY WEEKEND: High pressure is centered over North
Georgia this morning. This ridge of high pressure will continue to
keep us fair and dry through the weekend with only an isolated storm
or two, primarily over western sections. Highs will be right around
90 degrees both days. Lows will be in the 60s as some drier air
filters into Alabama from the east.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama has an 11:45 kick off this morning in
Nashville with Vanderbilt. Should be near 86 at kick off, but rising
to near 90 during the game. About a 1 in 4 chance of a thunderstorm
in the vicinity of the stadium at some point during the game. Auburn
hosts South Florida Saturday night with an 8:00 p.m. beginning. It
should be near 80 at kick off with little or no chance of rain. UAB
plays Florida State in Tallahassee at 4:00 p.m. Mostly clear weather
and a toasty 90 degrees at kick off.

GABRIELLE: The area of disturbed weather off the East Coast became
better organized on Friday. It was classified as a subtropical storm
late Friday night. A subtropical storm is still wind and rain, like
a regular tropical storm, but it does not have the complete warm core
of a pure tropical system. It still could assume full tropical
characteristics later today. Gabrielle will move west northwest,
intensifying as it goes, and should be a strong tropical storm or
subtropical storm by the time it makes landfall on the South Carolina
coast near Myrtle Beach Monday. A tropical storm watch is in effect
for portions of the Carolina coast. The storm will move inland,
dumping some very heavy rains on the Carolinas before it turns
northeast ahead of an approaching trough and parallels the coast
heading out to sea.

BENEFICIAL RAINS AHEAD/HUMBERTO?: The Gulf of Mexico is very
nervous. The GFS hints that a tropical low will develop over the
South Central Gulf over the weekend and head north. It would reach
the Louisiana or Mississippi coast by Tuesday morning. It will bring
lots of moisture and heavy rain with it. The low will drift into
northern Mississippi and curve into Northwest Alabama on Wednesday.
As it does, Alabama will find itself in the favorable right side of
the low pressure system, and rain should become likely. With copious
moisture present, rainfall could be heavy and storms could be
strong. Let's hope so.

ON THIS DATE IN 1965: Hurricane Betsy crossed the Florida Keys
during the early morning hours. Winds were estimated at 125 mph with
gusts to 165 mph at Big Pine Key. The lowest pressure in Florida was
reported at Tavernier with a reading of 28.12 inches. The observer
there reported being in the eye for nearly three hours. Damage from
wind and water is heavy in the Miami and Palm Beach areas. Four
people lost their lives in Florida. The hurricane immediately moved
over the warm waters of the Gulf and regained any lost intensity as
it turned northwest toward Louisiana, where it would reach land again
just before midnight on the 9th.

BETTER CHANCE OF RAIN BY MIDWEEK: We cannot totally rule out an
isolated shower or a thunderstorm over the weekend. In fact, a few
were in progress across the western part of the state this afternoon.
Temperatures are going to be heating up a bit reaching 90 or slightly
above over the weekend and early next week.

SOME CHANGES DOWN THE ROAD: We believe there will be an increase in
showers and thunderstorms later Tuesday and Tuesday night and lasting
into Wednesday and Thursday. This is due to the possibility of a
front reaching Alabama as early as Wednesday. It remains to be seen
if it will have enough muscle power to get through Central Alabama.
It may stall somewhere south of the Birmingham area by Friday. Bottom
line: our best chance of showers and thunderstorms, if this
transpires, would be on Wednesday. High temperatures may back off to
the mid 80s by the middle of next week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Getting a bit more interesting due to a low-
pressure area between Bermuda and the SE coast of the USA. Winds
upstairs are becoming increasingly friendly for additional
development. It could become a tropical depression or even a tropical
storm later today. A flight into the system is scheduled for this
afternoon. The center of the disturbance is expected to move
generally west or NW during the next couple of days. It is a
situation where people living along the east coast should keep a
close watch, especially from the Carolinas northward. One of our
weather models also develops a low in the Gulf of Mexico that looks
interesting. The model moves it to a position SE of Brownsville,
Texas. Yes, we will watch that one too.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight, it will be rather
warm and humid with temperatures between 82 and 85 for the
traditional 7:30 p.m. kick offs. We believe that the risk of a
lightning delay during this evening's games is very low. Alabama has
an 11:45 kick off Saturday in Nashville with Vanderbilt. Should be
near 86 at kick off, but rising to near 90 during the game. About a 1
in 4 chance of a thunderstorm in the vicinity of the stadium at some
point during the game. Auburn hosts South Florida Saturday night with
an 8:00 p.m. beginning. It should be near 80 at kick off with little
or no chance of rain. UAB plays Florida State in Tallahassee at 4:00
p.m. Mostly clear weather and a toasty 90 degrees at kick off.

HERE AND THERE: A real roller-coaster this summer in parts of the
NE. A case in point: it was 31 a few mornings ago at Saranac Lake,
New York. They had already reached 90 early this afternoon. It was 34
this morning at Lynn Lake, Manitoba—a distinct chill is beginning to
show up over the Far North. At International Falls, Minnesota, 35 is
expected Sunday night. A disturbing report that 26 children have died
in the USA this summer from being left in a closed automobile—either
forgotten or carelessness.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our fireman son came by early this
morning for a visit and completed disrupted the entire household.
Grandkids were trying to sleep late and so was the majority owner. I
was up. He immediately let Miss Molly out and he and the dog woke
everyone up on purpose. It was funny, because Little Miss Molly was
dancing all over the grandkids trying to get them up. They are still
yawning. Life goes on.....

...A Benign Weekend Weather Pattern...

SHOWERS REMAIN HARD TO FIND: The Alabama weather pattern won't change
much through the weekend. While we can't rule out the chance of a few
showers on a daily basis, they will remain widely scattered. The
chance of any one spot getting wet today, tomorrow, and Sunday is
about one in five, and the best chance of a shower will be over the
western third of the state where the moisture will be a little
deeper. Afternoon temperatures will remain a little above normal for
early September in Alabama; the high each day will be somewhere
between 89 and 92 degrees for most communities.

A CHANGE NEXT WEEK: A nice surge of chilly, Canadian air will drop
down into the Plains and the Midwest next week, and the cold front
ahead of that airmass should give Alabama a general increase in the
number of showers and thunderstorms by Tuesday and Tuesday night.
Then, we have a chance that some of that cooler air will slip into
the northern third of Alabama during the latter half of the week.
Looks like some North Alabama cities will drop into the 50s by
Thursday and Friday morning of next week. That, of course, is under
the assumption that the surface front makes it as far south as
Montgomery, which the models are now suggesting.

TROPICAL ACTION: While the disturbance in the Atlantic northeast of
the Bahamas has been seriously struggling in recent days, the wind
shear over the system is expected to vanish today, which should open
the door for an increase in organization, and possible development
into a tropical storm. The disturbance should move very close to the
coast of North Carolina by Sunday, and it is not far fetched to think
that the system might even be a hurricane at that time. It will move
northward, and then turn more eastward by early next week, out to sea
again. For now it looks like the greatest threat of a tropical storm
or hurricane will come in the general area from Charleston to
Baltimore, but the North Carolina coast seems to have the best chance
for now.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games across Alabama,
there is only a small risk of a shower for any one stadium, and the
kickoff temperature should be in the low to mid 80s, falling to near
80 by the end of the games.

Tomorrow, Alabama travels to Nashville to play the Vanderbilt
Commodores (the kickoff is at 11:34 a.m.)… the sky will be partly
sunny with just an outside chance of a shower during the game. The
kickoff temperature will be near 86 degrees. Auburn will host South
Florida tomorrow night at Jordan-Hare Stadium; the sky should be
mostly fair with little if any chance of rain. The temperature will
be close to 81 degrees at kickoff. And, UAB will be in Tallahassee to
play Florida State at 4:00 p.m… the sky should be generally sunny
with a kickoff temperature of 90 degrees. At this time we do not see
any significant chance of rain for that game.

SHOWERS AND STORMS STILL VERY SCARCE: We cannot rule them out each
day, but any shower or thunderstorm across Central Alabama through
the weekend should be few and far between. Translation, only about a
1 in 5 chance of your location getting wet. We have been conflicting
with some of our model guidance. Some of it keeps us bone dry through
Monday. We cannot accept that at face value, so we have introduced a
slight chance each day. High temperatures will be very close to the
90-degree mark into early next week.

We are looking at some possible changes in the weather next week.
There is the possibility of our best infusion of cooler air since
spring arriving at some point in the first or middle part of next
week. There is also some chance that the front will get tired and run
out of steam somewhere in Central Alabama. If that happens, do not
look for much relief. However, I believe that we can look for some
low temperatures in the low to mid 60s by the middle of next week and
some highs only in the lower 80s.

When that front gets closer (if it does), that will increase our
chance of showers and thunderstorms about Tuesday and Wednesday of
next week. That would be great news, because we are still classified
as an Exceptional drought area. In fact, the latest on the drought,
you could draw a line from Guin to Gordo to Centreville, Montgomery
and Troy and all areas north and NE of that are in the Exceptional
drought area—the worst designation there is. This despite some slight
improvements during the past week. So, this means Exceptional drought
continues for cities like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden, Anniston
and Montgomery.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We were pretty excited about a disturbed weather
area between the Bahamas and Bermuda. It has continued to become more
disorganized this morning. Upper-level winds are not friendly, but
that could change over the next couple of days. The low is nearly
stationary this morning, but it still has the potential to become a
tropical cyclone. Some of our latest models position it near Myrtle
Beach, South Carolina in a few days. Meanwhile, way over on the other
side of the country, what was once Hurricane Henriette is now only a
tropical depression and a lot of showers were spreading into New Mexico.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight and Friday night,
only a small risk of an interruption by lightning. Temperatures for
the traditional 7:30 kickoffs will be in the low 80s. We will have
forecasts for the college games tomorrow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our little 9-month old great grandson,
Brandon, went home to Russellville yesterday, but he did something at
the last minute that completely astounded Little Miss Molly. He saw
Molly taking her paws and ringing the little backdoor miniature
cowbell, which Molly does when she needs to go. Brandon crawled on
his belly all the way across the room and knocked the stew out of
that bell. Molly backed off with utter amazement on her face. I would
have given $50 dollars for a video. Life goes on......

...Hot and Hazy; Just A Few Showers...

HURRICANE THREAT FOR THE EAST COAST: The eyes of the weather world
will be shifting to the Atlantic during the next 5 to 7 days as a
hurricane threat looms for the Atlantic coast of the U.S. A
disturbance, now about 350 miles or so southwest of the island of
Bermuda, is forecast to slowly acquire tropical characteristics today
with a general west/northwest motion. The system is expected to
become Tropical Storm Gabrielle during the next 48 hours as it moves
over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. A blend of the best computer
model data suggests a threat to the coast of the Carolinas over the
weekend; the highest landfall probabilities run from north of
Charleston northward to Cape Hatteras. Needless to say, it is
impossible at this early stage of the game to be very specific, but
this has the potential to become a formidable hurricane by the time
it reaches land. We should also mention there is a chance that
Gabrielle will recurve before making landfall; we will be watching
closely in coming days.

WHAT ABOUT ALABAMA? If there is a significant hurricane on the coast
of the Carolinas over the weekend, it would actually keep Alabama
mostly dry as we would be in the subsiding (sinking) air that is
found around the periphery of a tropical cyclone. Even if you
discount any subsidence from a tropical system, it now looks like the
deepest moisture feed today through the weekend will remain a little
west of Alabama, so it looks like afternoon showers and thunderstorms
will remain rather widely spaced during the next four days. The
chance of any one spot getting wet today and tomorrow is only about
one in six. Afternoon temperatures will continue to run a little
above normal for early September, with daily highs in the 89 to 94
degree range.
For high school football games tonight and tomorrow night, we can't
rule out the chance of a shower, but most stadiums will be rain-free,
with kickoff temperatures in the low to mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Fall weather fans will be glad to know the coolest air so
far this young season (we consider meteorological fall September,
October, and November) will move into the plains states next week,
with freezing temperatures possible over parts of the Dakotas and
Minnesota by mid-week. The edge of that airmass will try to creep
into Alabama during the latter half of next week; if that happens
some North Alabama communities might dip into the 50s.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Moisture from Tropical Storm Henriette,
which moved northward through the Gulf of California yesterday, will
move up in eastern Arizona, New Mexico, and the western part of Texas
today with potential for heavy rain in spots. Yesterday's high in
Boise, Idaho was a refreshing 69 degrees. It was a wet day for
Arkansas; Little Rock was soaked with 2.33" during the day. To the
east along I-40, the rain was much lighter in Memphis where the total
was only 0.15".

THE ALABAMA STORY: Looks like no major changes for the rest of this week and all the way through the weekend. That translates to afternoon highs of 90 to 92 for the next couple of days, backing off just a bit to the upper 80s over the weekend. Tomorrow we expect few, if any, showers. The rest of the time there will be widely scattered ones, mostly in the afternoon, but no widespread drenching rain. Looking further down the road, there are indications that a front will reach this area about Tuesday, giving us a better chance of showers and thunderstorms and maybe a break in the heat. We will wait to be more specific, but early indications are our lows and highs will be in the more comfortable mid 60s and mid 80s after that happens.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Lots of attention in the Atlantic Basin, especially a disturbance about 400 miles WSW of Bermuda. There are chances some organization will lead to a tropical or sub-tropical cyclone moving east now, but it should work its way back to the west or SW. Two of our leading weather models hint that it will be off the coast of South Carolina or North Carolina late Saturday. Some of our other model stuff points to a possibility of over 6 inches of rain around Wilmington, North Carolina over the weekend and heavy rain northward along the mid-Atlantic coast. If this system develops into a tropical storm or even a hurricane, it will be named Gabrielle. Meanwhile, Felix is still dumping a lot of rain in the mountains of Central America. Hurricane Henriette was moving across the narrow Gulf of California to make another landfall in NW Mexico. The remnants could be near the SW tip of New Mexico by Thursday. This extra moisture could produce some flood problems in the SW!
USA.

USA WEATHER: A rare Tornado Warning this morning in SE Idaho. A Tornado Watch was in effect for parts of that area, including part of Utah. In the last 24 hours, 6.10 inches of rain at Cleburne in Johnson County, Texas and 5.66 inches at Lake Whitney, Texas. Low temperatures this morning 31 at Saranac Lake, New York and 117 in Death Valley. On this date in 1925, Alabama recorded its hottest temperature ever, 112 in Centreville. Birmingham had 106.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Even more people overnight in Molly?s home. When the little girl went to bed last night, she had very few daytime naps. The majority owner and I retired around midnight. We fixed Molly a nice bed in a chair by our bed. 12:33 a.m. Molly walked to end of the bed, became airborne like a rocket and kerplunk, landed right by me. I woke up and pushed her back to the foot of the bed. 12:40 a.m. Molly got up and dove headfirst between us trying to plow her way up by our pillows. 2:00 a.m. Majority owner could not sleep and stayed up until 4:00. 4:45 a.m. Minority owner opted for coffee. That seems to be a typical pattern at our house now. Life goes on, but it sure is interesting, but occasionally very tiresome.....

...Showers Remain Widely Spaced...

EIGHTY TWO YEARS AGO TODAY: On September 5, 1925, temperatures soared
across Alabama as a massive heat wave gripped the state. The high in
Centreville was 112 degrees, the hottest temperature ever recorded in
the state of Alabama. Birmingham's high was 106 degrees, and triple
digit heat was recorded on 9 of the first ten days of that month. So,
as we forecast a high of 93 today, remember the heat could be much
more severe this time of the year.

We will mention the chance of a few widely scattered showers and
storms today and tomorrow as a flow of high altitude moisture into
the region continues; some of this moisture is actually coming from
Tropical Storm Henriette, which is over the Gulf of California on the
western side of Mexico. The low level air remains rather dry,
however, so widespread rain is not expected.

OUR WEEKEND: A few scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible
on Saturday and Sunday with a high temperature in the 88 to 91 degree
range for most communities. The best chance of a shower or storm will
come during the afternoon and evening hours, as you might expect this
time of the year. To the east, we will be watching tropical
developments.

GABRIELLE? Looks like the East Coast of the U.S. will deal with the
threat of a hurricane over the coming weekend. A disturbance east of
Jacksonville, Florida is getting better organized this morning, and a
tropical depression is expected to form this morning. The system will
be forced to the west/northwest by Friday as high pressure aloft
builds north of the system. This means the coast of the Carolinas
could be threatened, and with a very warm Gulf Stream we believe that
this one could become a significant hurricane. All interests from
Savannah northward to Cape Cod will need to keep up with this one
closely in coming days; some of the models push this to near the
coast, around the border of North and South Carolina; then it turns
to the northeast up the coast.
Elsewhere in the tropics, Felix continues to produce incredible
amounts of rain over Central America, despite the fact that it has
been downgraded to a tropical depression.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: A code orange air quality alert has been posted
for the Birmingham metro today (Jefferson and Shelby Counties); that
means air quality could be unhealthy for sensitive groups, like
people with asthma.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: The heat has backed off a bit in Southern
California; the high in Los Angeles yesterday (at LAX) was 92. No
heat problems up in the Pacific Northwest; the high yesterday in
Seattle was only 67, and the city was soaked with 1.12" of rain. The
coldest spot yesterday in the continental U.S. was West Yellowstone,
Montana with a frosty 31 degrees.

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: Seems like our weather has settled into a
pattern that is average for early September. We are also getting into
the time of year that is traditionally our driest, especially the
month of October. We are certainly hoping and praying for a non-
traditional two-month period to help build up the huge rain deficits.
As of today, the deficiency at Birmingham Airport was 17.72 inches.
It will take a mere miracle to erase that by New Year's Eve. A year
ago today, our 2006 rainfall total had reached 42.26 inches—more than
double the amount this year.

We don't look for any big rain events for the rest of the week,
although there could be an increase in the number of showers and
storms by the weekend. There are increasing indications that a front
will try to reach this area early next week. We are looking for high
temperatures between 88 and 93 over the next several days. It can
certainly get hot this time of year. Today in 1925, we had a high
temperature of 105 as a killer heat wave affected the entire state. I
still say that is one of our worst ever. I will try to do a story on
that event on our weather Blog tomorrow.

There were some pleasantly cool temperatures this morning over NE
Alabama with 62 at DeSoto State Park and at Muscadine. Valley Head
had 63, Ft. Payne 64 and Anniston 66.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Vicious Hurricane Felix made landfall in NE
Nicaragua today as a Category 5. He was going downhill rapidly this
afternoon, but still producing major problems with excessive rain.
Winds had dropped to 100 mph. He will continue across Honduras,
Guatemala and Southern Mexico, probably producing life-threatening
flash floods and mudslides. A low-pressure area midway between
Bermuda and the NE coast of Florida continued to show some signs of
organization. Could be a tropical or sub-tropical cyclone over the
next couple of days. Movement is erratic.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: 121 in Death Valley was the hottest yesterday.
37 at Leadville, Colorado and Lake Yellowstone was the lowest this
morning. A sign of the season: it was 32 on Mt. Washington, New
Hampshire with 60 mph winds along with freezing drizzle and freezing
fog. More heavy rain in parts of South and Central Texas today. San
Antonio has received 44.70 inches this year, an excess of 23 inches.
Houston is 18 wetter than normal.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sorry there was no Molly story
yesterday. Ran out of space, but I did hear about it. That little
girl seems totally bewildered. Last night we had our great grandson
for spend-the-night along with three grandchildren, daughter and son-
in-law and the majority owner. The great grandson is a little baby
and Little Miss Molly loves little children. I believe she has walked
three miles just inside the house yesterday trying to check out
everybody and everything. She walked up to the little baby this
morning and gently kissed him on the cheek. The little baby grabbed
Molly's paw and they seemed to be bonding. Molly would lay down
beside the baby as if to protect her. When I got up at 5 this
morning, I accidentally kicked Little Miss Molly in the head. It did
not hurt her, but she sure looked surprised. Those things happen when
you have a houseful of people. I believe Little Miss Molly has lost
about ½ pound, because she is constantly on the move and the
grandkids run with her a lot. That means that she may be down to 8
and ½ pounds. Life goes on and is always interesting......

...Drier Air Slips into North Alabama...

SHOWERS WILL BE SCARCE THROUGH MID-WEEK: Drier air has moved into the
northeast half of Alabama, and accordingly showers will be pretty
hard to find today for areas north of a line from Livingston to
Camden to Eufaula. The dry air also means very effective heating by
the sun today, and most communities around here will peak in the 91
to 95 degree range. But, on the positive side, dewpoints will mix
down into the 50s this afternoon, meaning humidity levels will be in
the 20 percent range during the peak of the heat. Another words,
today will be hotter but less humid than recent days.

THE DAYS AHEAD: We will bring back the chance of widely scattered
showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours tomorrow and
Thursday, but once again the deeper moisture will be confined to the
southern half of the state. Then, on Friday, moisture surges
northward and scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible
statewide. For Saturday and Sunday, with ample moisture and an
approaching short wave, scattered showers and storms will remain in
the forecast with a high generally in the mid to upper 80s.

TROPICS: Hurricane Felix will move into Central America today, with
the center making landfall in the general vicinity of the Honduras/
Nicaragua border. Felix weakened a bit yesterday, but is still a
major hurricane, and is expected to be at category four strength at
the time of landfall (winds 131-155 mph). At this time it looks like
Felix will slowly dissipate during the latter half of the week as it
moves farther inland over Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico. But, it will
produce life threatening flooding and mud slides.

Out in the Atlantic, a tropical wave is about 1000 miles east of the
Lesser Antilles, but due to dry air surrounding the system and cooler
than normal SSTs, significant development in the short term looks
unlikely. And, we should note that a broad low pressure area about
200 miles east of Savannah has the potential to become better
organized today; most of the global models ultimately push this
system out into the open water before becoming a threat to land.

And, we should mention that Henrietta, in the far East Pacific, is
expected to become a hurricane today; that system will be forced
northward toward Baja California, and moisture from Henrietta will
wind up in the Southwest U.S. later this week, possibly setting the
stage for heavy rain over parts of Arizona and New Mexico.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hot weather is the story over much of
Southern California; Los Angeles International Airport soared to 99
degrees yesterday, but to the north the high in San Francisco was
only 71. Deep tropical moisture was over the Rio Grande Valley
yesterday; Brownsville, Texas recorded 2.03" of rain.

THE ALABAMA STORY: On this Labor Day 2007, a lot of us weather
people are working. After all, there is weather 24 hours a day and
365 days a year. I have worked more holidays than I have been off,
but I cannot complain because I am so thankful to have had a job in
weather for all these many years. It is an occupation that I never
dreaded going to work.

Back to the situation at hand, drier air has pushed down into North
Alabama. This will lead to some slightly cooler nights, but not
sweater weather, by any means. It was a pleasant 62 this morning in
DeSoto State Park and 64 at Ft. Payne Airport. Lows over the north
half of the state tonight should be mostly in the 60s. With the drier
air, afternoons will heat up a bit, but the humidity will be lower,
especially tomorrow. This is one of those weather situations where
there is going to be some risk of a shower or thunderstorm over the
south half of the state for the next several days. Here in Central
Alabama, we cannot absolutely rule out one each day, but we have left
them out of the forecast for tomorrow. Our better chance will
probably be next Friday.

Early this morning, a cluster of showers and thunderstorms developed
in West/Central Alabama, mostly south of the Tuscaloosa area. Radar
estimates indicated more than 2 inches of rain over NW Hale County.
Those showers took their time moving south and were over the SW part
of the state this afternoon.

TROPICAL WEATHER: It is all about Felix today. He continues to be an
extremely dangerous hurricane, but not especially large. He was
moving westward and had temporarily dropped to a Category 4.
Sustained winds this afternoon were 145 mph. Felix was moving west at
21 mph. The latest official track forecast continues to imply that
the USA will not be affected, although moisture may reach parts of
Texas and New Mexico by early next week. The track carries Felix near
the north coast of Honduras tomorrow and across Northern Guatemala
Wednesday and eventually into Mexico. There is a possibility he will
not emerge over the extreme south part of the Bay of Campeche.
Elsewhere in the Tropics, a well-defined low-pressure area midway
between Africa and the Lesser Antilles, has some potential. A broad
area of low pressure about 200 miles east of Savannah has the
potential for slow development as it drifts eastward.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A bit surprised to see the temperature at 110
below zero at Vostok, Antarctica today. It is expected to drop
further to 115 below. The Antarctic is getting very late in the
winter season. Back in the USA, the coldest this morning was 32 at
Stanley, Idaho. The hottest yesterday was 122 in Death Valley.
Between 1 and 2 inches of rain fell at Jacksonville, Savannah and
Tallahassee during the last 24 hours......

...Happy Labor Day!...

Labor Day usually has something interesting going on in the tropical
Atlantic. The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 is the all time champion
for intensity at landfall in the United States. In 1965, Hurricane
Betsy had forecasters and residents befuddled along the East Coast as
she twisted and turned more times than an Alabama Adventure roller
coaster. In 1979, Hurricane David was bearing down on the Southeast
coast of Florida, luckily a shadow of its former self. Behind David
was the sixth named storm of the year, languishing under the lead
hurricane's outflow as it churned westward near the Virgin Islands.
It would get a new lease on life in the Southeast Gulf of Mexico and
strike the Alabama coast on September 12, 1979. Its name?
Frederic. In 2004, Frances made Labor Day miserable for millions of
Floridians. On this Labor Day, we have a Category Five hurricane
churning through the Caribbean…its name?

FELIX: Hurricane Felix jumped into the ranks of the thirty one
Category Five hurricanes of North Atlantic Hurricane history last
night as an Air Force crew found near record winds, extreme
turbulence, unusual lightning activity and had their plane battered
by graupel, or ice pellets. The mission had to be aborted after the
crew had performed their heroic duty and found winds of 165 mph.
That number was probably conservative, and the top winds were likely
180 mph or more. Look for more on Felix in today's Weather Blog.

YOUR FORECAST: Was it just me, or did it feel like September
yesterday. Get used to it, because it will feel that way through
midweek. Easterly winds around high pressure to the north will
funnel dry air into Alabama over the next three days. This will
allow for coolish overnight lows in the middle 60s. With less
cloudiness, temperatures will be much warmer today and tomorrow than
yesterday. In fact, we will see highs back in the 90s in many
locations by tomorrow. Meanwhile, high pressure over the Gulf will be
sliding to the east and moisture will be loading to the west of
Alabama. A developing trough over the central part of the nation
will push eastward late in the week, This will allow a front to
approach us from the north on Saturday. Rain chances will increase
with the approach of the front. The wild card is Felix. Felix will
enter the southwestern Gulf by Friday and we will be watching to see
if the trough is able to influence the hurricane's motion. It looks
unlikely, but if it does, it could have a big influence on Alabama's
weather.

ON THIS DATE IN 1821: The Long Island Hurricane of 1821 is the only
hurricane to directly strike the area which is currently New York
City. The Category 3 hurricane raised the water level at the Battery
to thirteen feet above normal sea level. The East River and Hudson
Rivers reportedly merged, inundating Manhattan to Canal Street. A
similar storm today is a worst case scenario for preparedness
officials. A similar storm striking Manhattan today would result in
countless injuries and fatalities. Damage could total $50 Billion.

...Nice Labor Day In Store...

The holiday weekend is shaping up to be a pretty nice one weather
wise here in Central Alabama, although the definition of a nice
forecast has arguably changed with the drought conditions gripping
the state. But, if you have a lake trip or barbecue planned for this
afternoon or tomorrow, enjoy the less humid, relatively mild and
mostly dry conditions.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure over the northeast will keep an
easterly flow going over the northern half of Alabama for the next
couple of days. This will allow that drier air to push into the
state. You may have noticed a fresh easterly breeze today. The
lower dewpoints will allow for some comfortable overnight readings,
with lows in the middle to perhaps even lower 60s, which is quite
refreshing considering the recent record warm nighttime readings.
Three could be an isolated shower or storm each afternoon, but rain
chances will be very small. High pressure in the Gulf will slide far
enough east to allow a tremendous buildup of moisture to the west of
Alabama late in the week and an approaching trough will send a cool
front our way, increasing our rain chances for the weekend.

FELIX: Hurricane Felix intensified overnight and is now a category
two hurricane, cruising west northwestward over the southern
Caribbean. The hurricane passed very close to the islands of the
Netherlands Antilles and Aruba early this morning. But the islands
were on the weaker left semicircle and no tropical storm force winds
have been reported. The hurricane jogged a little westward during
the overnight but should be on a slightly north of due west course
for the foreseeable future. This will carry it over the open waters
of the Caribbean. By early afternoon on Monday, Felix will be about
200 miles south of Jamaica. Tropical storm force winds should remain
well south of the island, but a tropical storm watch remains in
effect out of an abundance of caution on the island, which dodged a
bullet with Hurricane Dean. Tropical storm force winds will begin
affecting the far northern part of Nicaragua and eastern Honduras
after midnight Monday night. Hurricane force winds will affect the
Honduran coast Tuesday and the eye will likely make a brief
landfall. Flooding will be a huge problem in the mountainous areas
of these two nations. Remember, Hurricane Fifi killed 8,000 people
on a similar track in 1974. Early Wednesday, Felix will make another
landfall on the Central Belize coast, likely as a category four
storm, although interaction with land could bring this down a
category or so.

ON THIS DATE IN 1666: It had been an intensely hot summer in
London. A dry northeast wind had blown most of the summer thanks to
persistent high pressure over northern Europe. The city's wooden
houses were tinder dry. The threat of fire was far from the minds of
most Londoners. They more concerned about a possible attack by the
Dutch, since England was at war. A small fire broke out on this
date. Fanned by strong winds, it spread rapidly. The fire burned
out of control for three days. Finally, the northeast wind ceased on
September 5th, but the fire kept on burning for four more days. The
rains arrived on September 9th to completely extinguish the blazes.
The final toll was 13,200 houses damaged. Nearly 100,000 of the
city's 600,000 residents were homeless. Amazingly, only four people
died. London would be rebuilt with stone and brick buildings.

...90 Degree Streak Comes To An End...

Held in check most of the day by extensive cloudiness leftover from
Friday night's convection, the mercury got a late start on Saturday
at Birmingham. It made a valiant effort to make 90, but fell just
short, peaking at 89F just before 2 p.m. The sub-90 degree reading
was the first since July 25th, marking the end of a record tying 37
day 90 degree streak in the Magic City. Pinson did keep their record
90 degree streak alive at 38 days. They could easily extend it today.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS THIS MORNING: A complex set of features adorn
the weather map this morning across the Deep South. First, we find a
frontal boundary along the Gulf Coast. Several small low pressure
systems are rippling along it. High pressure near New York City is
ridging down the east coast and proving an easterly flow into
Alabama. Some drier air is poised to advect into Alabama from
northern Georgia. A trough of low pressure is over Mississippi and
western Tennessee. It should continue to move westward. Now, our
main two forecast models are involved in a controversy. The GFS
keeps things much drier today, and over the next few days, with only
isolated storms. The NAM keeps things much wetter. I have to lean
toward the drier solution of the GFS for the next couple of days,
given the rapid demise of convection yesterday and the drier air over
northern Georgia. So, we will call for only isolated storms through
Thursday. By Friday, a large trough will be approaching the
Mississippi River and rain and thunderstorms will be widespread to
our west. This activity should affect Alabama next weekend.

TROPICS: Felix became a hurricane early last evening. It spent
Saturday steadily intensifying over the southern Caribbean. There is
nothing really to keep this trend from continuing. The westward
moving tropical cyclone will pass just north of the islands of
Curacao, Bonaire and Aruba. Felix should continue on a west or west
northwesterly course over the next five days, eventually brushing the
Honduran coast on Tuesday. It will then target the Yucatan, likely
making landfall in Belize on Wednesday. Then comes the uncertainty.
The trough that will be setting up over the Mississippi Valley will
come into play as the hurricane continues westward. If the influence
of the trough extends far enough to the south, it may draw Felix
northwestward into the Gulf of Mexico. If it misses the trough,
Felix will cross into Mexico. It will be interesting to watch. A
strong tropical wave between Africa and the Lesser Antilles may
become a tropical depression over the next day or so. I think it
ends up recurving out to sea.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Floridians were bracing for their second
category four hurricane in less than three weeks as Hurricane Frances
was chewing its way through the Bahamas. The storm, packing winds
of 145 mph, prompted the largest evacuation in the history of the
Sunshine State, as 2.5 million people were asked to evacuate.
