...Near Average Temperatures...

A WET SUNDAY: There is no dramatic story to tell you about
temperatures across Alabama for the next several days. The highs and
lows should be fairly typical for late November. That will include
some lows at night in the 40s all the way through midweek. It will be
rather cool Sunday, because of persistent clouds and occasional rain.
For the rest of the week, highs should be in low to mid 60s.

We still have some precipitation to deal with. That low-pressure area
developed as expected over the NW Gulf of Mexico, however, it has
turned into a slow-mover, which translated into a late arrival for our
expected rain in Alabama. That delay was good news for Saturday
football fans with all or most of the in state college games being
played under dry conditions.

This afternoon, the heaviest rain was over South Louisiana where
temperatures had hung out in the 50s all day. The rain was increasing
across
Central and South Mississippi and spreading into Alabama.

All of this movement means a few changes in our forecast. We believe
that most of our rain now will be overnight tonight and through much
of Sunday. Originally we had anticipated the rain ending early Sunday.
Even so, the more extensive rain will probably through Sunday morning
into the afternoon, but diminishing late.

HOW MUCH RAIN: Here in Central Alabama, we are thinking a storm total
of ½ inch or slightly more. The rain will vary greatly with the
lighter amounts in the Tennessee Valley and the heavier amounts down
south. Over the extreme south, some areas will get over 1 inch and
most of the south half of the state will get over ½ inch.

THANKSGIVING DAY: It is really too early to do this, but all of the
information we can analyse indicates a cool day with early morning
lows in the 30s with afternoon highs struggling to get above 50. While
we are at it, let us try to estimate weather for the biggest shopping
day of the year next Friday, which so happens to also be the day of
the Alabama/Auburn game. Early morning lows should be near freezing
and afternoon highs of 50 to 55. Please be advised that there can be
changes in that outlook since it is a full week away.

MISCELLANEOUS: It will be interesting to see the final damage toll
from Hurricane Ida, especially in Central American and along the
Atlantic Seaboard. The November edition of the Alabama Baptist
newspaper said that nine members of the First Baptist Church in San
Vicente, El Salvador were lost in the hurricane. There was a lot of
flooding and damage in El Salvador…back to North America, the heaviest
rain so far from the low-pressure area over the NW Gulf, has been well
over 1 inch in the last 24 hours in Austin, Corpus Christi, San
Antonio and Waco. There has also been some record flash flooding
during the past week NW of London. The warmest in the country
yesterday was 86 in Miami, the lowest this morning in the lower 48 was
3 above zero at Kremmling, Colorado and 46 below zero in Bettles,
Alaska. There is 8 inches of snow on the ground there and also at
Barrow. Nome has 15 inches on the ground.

NO TINY WORLD TODAY. I am subbing for Bill Murray who is with his
family at the Alabama/Chattanooga game. One of their sons is an
Alabama cheerleader.

...Wet Weather Ahead...

RAIN AHEAD: A low pressure system moving along the Gulf Coast will
gradually spread rain up into Alabama today. Some light rain could
begin as early as this morning, with more widespread and heavier rain
moving in this afternoon. The rain could continue for much of the
night, making for some wonderful sleeping weather overnight. Highs
this afternoon will top out in the upper 50s, perhaps reaching 60 in
spots. Lows tonight will be around 50.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Expect some leftover rain Sunday morning, with
clearing skies during the afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 50s.
Final rainfall amounts will be around an inch across Central Alabama.

SHORT WORK WEEK: By Monday morning, high pressure will be centered
near McComb, Mississippi. This will give us a fine mild day on
Monday, with partly cloudy skies. A cool front will pass through on
Tuesday, but not before we register highs in the 60s again. There is
a slight chance of a shower Tuesday afternoon.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Te busiest travel day of the year will feature
fairly benign weather across the country, including here in Alabama,
where northwesterly winds will be allowing cooler air to seep into the
state. It looks like Thanksgiving Day will be dry and cool, with
morning lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s. Friday looks good wit
partly cloudy skies and seasonably cool temperatures. Iron Bowl
weather looks fine.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama will host Chattanooga at Bryant-Denny
Stadium with an 11:20 a.m. kickoff. The sky will be mostly cloudy,
there will be increasing rain chances during the game. The kickoff
temperature will be near 58 degrees, remaining about there during the
game. UAB is on the road; they will play East Carolina Saturday at
2:30 at Greenville, North Carolina. The sky will be partly sunny with
a kickoff temperature around 65 degrees, falling into the upper 40s by
the final whistle. Auburn has the day off.

WEATHERBRAINS: Last week, we had an interesting visit with Mike
Smith, the CEO of Weather Data, Inc. He brought a lot of insight into
the world of private weather firms and the warning process. This
week, it's a look at Ohio weather, with Dick Goddard, long time
meteorologist on television in Cleveland and Thomas Schmidlin, who has
a great book on Ohio weather history. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com

Hurricane Scale, died on this date of a heart attack in Miami. In
1965, Saffir, an engineer, developed the scale based on two decades of
research into the wind damage caused by hurricanes. He worked
tirelessly to improve building codes to help structures survive such
storms. In 1969, he collaborated with his friend Robert Simpson,

...Headed To Wet Weather...

ALABAMA WEATHER WORD—RAIN: In a way, it looks like a good old fashioned winter rain. Must not say that, because winter is not here yet. As far as weather people are concerned, winter is only 11 days away since we consider December, January and February as the winter months. Back to the task at hand. That task is trying to figure out when the rain begins, when it will end and how much we will get. Our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, is directing this project. A low-pressure area is already forming over the NW Gulf. It is destined to move NE passing south of the Mississippi-Alabama coast Saturday and into South Mississippi or SW Alabama Sunday morning. This is the perfect scenario to send a shield of rain north eastward across Alabama. For North-Central Alabama, including the Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston area, we are projecting over ½ inch of rain Saturday and an additional 1/3 inch Sunday morning. The rain should taper off and move out of the way by Sunday afternoon leaving Monday completely dry. We will introduce a few showers, however, again on Tuesday. With the thick deck of clouds and the rain, we have lowered the high for tomorrow to 59—otherwise to the low 60s through the rest of the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Could not ask for better weather for high school football playoff games tonight. There are numerous games all over the state. The temperature will be in the 50s at kick off and close to 48 or 50 at the final whistle. College games on Saturday include Chattanooga at Alabama at 11:20. It will be mostly cloudy with intermittent rain, especially during the second half. Game-time temperatures may start off at 58 and warming a degree or so. UAB is in Greenville, North Carolina to play East Carolina. They should have dry weather with 65 degrees at kick off at 2:30.

LAST NIGHT IN ALABAMA: Low temperatures dropped several degrees lower than we expected, which is not unusual when you have a clear sky and variable light winds. We have one report from an official NWS Cooperative Observer of 25 in Lafayette. Our 33/40 Skywatchers reported 30 at Scrougeout and Muscadine. Heaviest frost so far this season for Muscadine. It was 29 in Cottondale; 31 in Scottsboro, Belle Mina, Dora and Addison; 33 in Ft. Payne and Jasper.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: It is always interesting to sit at my desk and look out across the great North American landscape. Of course, I cannot see very far except by use of a computer. Not only do we have that low-pressure area forming off the lower Texas coast, but we have plenty of cold weather in the Far North. Some big snows have occurred in the last couple of days in the Pacific Northwest. In the high country, the snow continues to pile up by the feet. In Alaska, the coldest I could find this morning was 45 below zero at Bettles. In the lower 48, the coldest was 7 below zero at Laramie, Wyoming where I once had some of the best pancakes ever. Warmest yesterday was 86 at Miami.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Saw a news item this morning saying if your spouse has a high IQ, that the other spouse would live longer. The majority owner has an IQ much higher than mine and so does my puppy, Little Miss Molly. Maybe that means I will live as long as Noah who was 400 years old when he built the ark. I wish I had the memory of Little Miss Molly. After she jumped that rabbit two days ago, every time we walk for another week or so, she will go straight to that spot in the thick hedgerow, stick her head all the way in it to see if that rabbit is at home. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns Over The Weekend...

ONE MORE SUNNY DAY: Today promises to be another very pleasant fall day for Alabama with a sunny sky and a high in the mid 60s this afternoon, following a rather chilly start this morning. While we enjoy the nice day, to the west a storm system will begin to organize in the West Gulf of Mexico, and that will bring changes in our weather as we get into the weekend.

Clouds will move into the state tonight, and initially rain will begin around Mobile Bay. The rain will spread northward, perhaps reaching Tuscaloosa and Birmingham by afternoon. Then, tomorrow night, the surface low is expected to be just north of Mobile, which means widespread rain is likely for the northern half of the state. The rain will taper off Sunday from west to east, but some rain is possible all the way through Sunday afternoon for the eastern counties of the state. With the models trending northward with the placement of the surface low, it now looks like rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely along the I-20 corridor, with potential for amounts well over one inch to the south. All of the rain should be gone by Sunday night.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Excellent weather for the remaining high school football playoff games tonight; the sky will be mostly fair, with temperatures in the mid 50s at kickoff, falling to near 50 by the fourth quarter. Tomorrow, Alabama will host Chattanooga at Bryant-Denny Stadium with an 11:20 a.m. kickoff. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and some light rain is possible during the game, especially the second half. The kickoff temperature will be near 58 degrees, rising into the low 60s during the game. UAB is on the road; they will play East Carolina Saturday at 2:30 at Greenville, North Carolina. The sky will be partly sunny with a kickoff temperature around 65 degrees, falling into the upper 40s by the final whistle. Auburn has the day off.

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS: Many will be off to grandma's house next week. For now, the weather looks pretty benign all week across the Deep South. The global models have backed off on the idea of a major storm system on Tuesday; the bulk of the energy now seems to be well to the north of Alabama, so we will mention just a chance of a shower Tuesday afternoon. The rest of the week will be dry, and cooler air should arrive on Thanksgiving Day. Again, the models have backed off a bit on the depth and intensity of the cold air, so Thursday and Friday look cool and dry with seasonal temperatures. We will be much more specific over the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1900: A late season outbreak of tornadoes kills 77 people in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. A group of students and a teacher trying to escape an approaching tornado in Arkansas were injured when the twister overtook them. It had missed the school building entirely.

...More Changes In Our Weather...

MILDER TREND STARTS TOMORROW: We are making several changes in our forecast with this afternoon edition. You can blame 80% of that on our friend, the Gulf of Mexico.

Do no get mad at the Gulf of Mexico. If we did not have her, the entire Alabama landscape would look different, not only to trees and timberlands, but farms, lakes and streams.

The latest model runs have changed the path of the low that will form in the Gulf of Mexico. The low is now expected to move inland closer to Alabama. By Saturday morning, the low is expected to be along the Louisiana coast with rain overspreading the south half of Mississippi. By nightfall Saturday, the low should be over Southern Mississippi. Then it is projected to move up across Eastern Mississippi into the Tennessee Valley area of Alabama. This is considerably different from what the models were painting yesterday, so there could still be more changes.
It will not be quite as cold tonight, but there could be some patchy frost in the valleys by daybreak. Milder temperatures Friday with highs in the mid 60s and mostly sunshine, but clouds will move in Friday night. At some point later in the day Saturday, we will see some rain spread up from the SW with a better chance Saturday night. The rain should linger into Sunday, mainly during the morning. Monday looks like mostly sunshine and mild temperatures.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks great for the remaining high school play off games Friday night. It will be dry and cool with temperatures in the 50s for most of the games and maybe some upper 40s by the fourth quarter. No rain expected. For in state college games on Saturday, Chattanooga will be at Alabama at 11:21 and Eastern Kentucky at Jacksonville State at noon. We must introduce the possibility of some light rain, although much of those two games could be played dry. Elon is at Samford for a 2:00 p.m. kick off and Mississippi Valley State at Alabama A&M also at 2:00. Florida Atlantic will be at Troy for a 3:19 game. There is a chance of rain for those games and temperatures will be hovering close to 60.

THANKSGIVING: Too far out to be specific, but indications are that a good surge of colder air will be spreading across Alabama at midweek giving some clear dry weather for Thanksgiving Day with temperatures probably struggling to reach 60. More on that later.

MISCELLANEOUS: Two of the colder temperatures in Alabama this morning: 28 at Muscadine and 29 at Scrougeout. The latter is in NE Etowah County and had heavy frost and a bit of freezing fog…88 was the warmest in the USA Wednesday at Miami…cold spots this morning included 3 above at Stanley, Idaho in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountains…coldest in Alaska was 46 below at Bettles, Alaska after a high yesterday of only 38 below…as much as 30 inches of snow over parts of Western Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I think I know Little Miss Molly like a book; at other times, not so sure. As she gets older, her habits are changing somewhat. For the last week or so, there has been 100 zillion fallen leaves along the walking track, most of them are very small. Every time we walk she will seek out one single tiny leaf and sniff it for several minutes, if I let her. I do not know if she is text messaging or reading them like tea leaves or like it is her e-mail. Eventually she will leave a few drops and move on. Late yesterday she was right up against the hedgerow doing her business. The CR (Community Rabbit) was only inches away. He shot out of there like a cannon brushing the top of Molly. Molly took up the chase, leaping like a kangaroo. I followed behind like an Olympic runner until I got everything under control. Like I say, I never know what to expect and life goes on.

...Lots of Sun Today...

A SLOW WARMING TREND: Following a frosty morning, temperatures will warm nicely across Alabama today, with most places reaching the low 60s this afternoon with a bright, sunny sky. Tomorrow will be a similar day; sunny with a high in the mid 60s. To the west, as we enjoy the dry weather, a storm system will begin to organize in the western Gulf of Mexico that will impact Alabama by Saturday.

WEEKEND FORECAST: Clouds will overspread Alabama Saturday morning, and rain will become widespread across the Gulf Coast as the low in the Gulf moves northeast. It still appears the most widespread rain will fall over the southern third of the state, but some light rain is possible Saturday as far north as I-20. North of Birmingham, the day should be generally dry despite the clouds. By Sunday, the low will move northeast of Alabama, and we expect the sky to become partly sunny by afternoon following lingering morning clouds. Highs over the weekend will be in the low 60s.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: Monday will be dry and pleasant, but a strong storm system will impact Alabama on Tuesday. At the moment, it looks like instability and moisture won't be sufficient for a major severe weather threat, but this is our fall tornado season, and we will watch developments as the event gets closer. Wednesday, the biggest travel day of the year, looks dry and seasonal for much of the Deep South. Then, a sharp upper trough is forecast to develop over the eastern U.S. late in the week, which promises to deliver sharply colder to Alabama by Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday/Iron Bowl game day. We will be much more specific early next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Excellent weather for the remaining high school football playoff games tomorrow night; the sky will be mostly fair, with temperatures in the mid 50s at kickoff, falling to near 50 by the fourth quarter. Saturday, Alabama will host Chattanooga at Bryant-Denny Stadium with an 11:20 a.m. kickoff. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and a little light rain is possible during the game.

EYE ON ALASKA: Bitterly cold air remains over Alaska; the low yesterday morning at Bettles was 46 degrees below zero. Some of that cold air will break away and head southeast within the next 7 days. Long range computer models hint at a much colder pattern for the eastern half of the nation by early December.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Hurricane Lenny stalled near the island of St. Maarten in the northern Leeward Islands for much of the day, dropping between 25 and 30 inches of rain that led to widespread flooding.

...Another Chilly Night...

THOSE STUBBORN CLOUDS: On a night like last night, clouds become the boss of our weather and they can be awfully stubborn. They can also disrupt our temperature forecast. Sometimes on a night like that, trying to forecast the overnight low temperature is not totally unlike tossing a dart at a dartboard. The areas that get clear weather can cool off quickly. A couple of examples: it was 32 at Scrougeout and 31 in Ashland, while Huntsville and Tuscaloosa (with a persistent cloud cover) had only 45.

NOW WHAT: The forecast over the next few days will not be too easy, although we do expect mostly sunshine Thursday and Friday. Look for
some scattered frost again tonight and Thursday morning. The frost may be a little heavier than we have had lately. We are forecasting an average low of 35 across Central Alabama while some of the colder valleys could be closer to 30. The clouds should move out of the area this evening. Beyond Friday, the weather gets more interesting and our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, is going to have a say in that. A low-pressure area will form over the NW Gulf of Mexico. By Friday morning it should be centered over South Texas. By Saturday morning it will be a little further eastward and spreading light rain into South Alabama. The low should move to the NE Gulf of Mexico south of the Florida Panhandle by Saturday night and by Sunday it should be over South Carolina.

SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR ALABAMA: It means rain will spread into the state, but occur mostly over about the south half of the state Saturday and Saturday night. The rain will be a little heavier over the south third of the state. By Sunday morning, light rain should be ending over extreme East Alabama and the rest of the state will have clearing weather. Rain amounts could be moderate to heavy down over SE Alabama, but across the central part of the state, including Birmingham, we may not get more than one-third of an inch.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We will discuss football weather more fully in our Thursday editions, but it looks excellent for high school play off games Friday night with temperatures dropping into the 50s.

ROAMING: It is getting that time of year when the weather gets more and more interesting and it is getting bitter cold over the far, far north. The warmest in the country yesterday was 86 at Pembroke Pines, Florida and Riverside, California…coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 7 at Gunnison and Kremmling, Colorado…another huge storm system affecting the Pacific Northwest…power was out in a number of Oregon towns near the coast, including 1,700 homes in the town of Oregon City…as much as 5 inches of rain can be expected from this storm with snow in the high country measured in feet…it was 45 below zero this morning at Chandalar Lake and Bettles in Alaska with a wind chill as low as minus 59. It was 54 below at Summit, Greenland.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our new little great granddaughter came by for a visit this morning. She is only three days old, but Little Miss Molly went into overdrive. I am convinced she thought that Kayleigh was another little puppy and she was demanding to play with her. The majority owner was cuddling the baby in her lap. Little Miss Molly became airborne and landed near the baby numerous times and was giving her the sniffing treatment. There is no way that Little Miss Molly would harm any living creature. Later Dino, her boyfriend, came by and they had a raucous time of it in our driveway chasing each other at breakneck speed. On a long very early walk with Molly, she had stopped behind the house where Dino lives and cried real tears because she could not see Dino peering out the lower windowpane in his backdoor. Life goes on.

...Cool and Dry...

DRY THROUGH FRIDAY: Cool and dry weather will continue across Alabama through the rest of the week. We are forecasting a mix of sun and clouds today with a high in the upper 50s. Tomorrow and Friday will feature a good supply of sunshine with a slow warming trend. We will reach the low 60s tomorrow, followed by mid 60s Friday.

THE WEEKEND: A low pressure center is forecast to develop in the western Gulf of Mexico Friday night, and that feature will move east/northeast, spreading rain along the Gulf Coast. The latest global computer models have trended farther to the south with this storm system, and it now appears the heaviest and most widespread rain on Saturday will fall over the southern third of our state. We could see a little light rain as far north as I-20, but areas to the north will be dry. Otherwise, Saturday looks mostly cloudy and cool with a high in the upper 50s. The sky becomes partly
sunny on Sunday as the storm system moves on to the east.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: Our next chance of rain will come on Tuesday of next week when showers and thunderstorms are likely. Then, the weather turns sharply colder by Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, which is also Iron Bowl day this year. We will be much more specific about the weather next week on Friday.

WATCHING THE ALASKA COLD: Bitterly cold air continues to build in Canada. Yesterday's high in Fairbanks was -14, which followed a morning low of -23. Coldest spot was Tanana with 45 degrees below zero. Some of this air will break away and move down into the continental U.S. by the middle of next week.

WINTER AWARENESS WEEK: This is the week set aside by the NWS in Birmingham to remind you that we do have occasional winter storm threats here in Alabama. The most serious is an ice storm, which happens after a long period of freezing rain, or liquid precipitation that falls when surface temperatures are below freezing. One of our most crippling ice storms came in January 1982. Trees snapped, pulling down power lines and putting as many as 750,000 Alabamians in the dark. Thousands had to be sheltered.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: A tornado 100 yards wide was on the ground 27 miles across North Alabama from Rosa to near Albertville, killing three people. A home in the Susan Moore community in Blount County was thrown 500 feet killing one person.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24 hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Fresh Cool November Air...

FROM SHORT SLEEVES TO COATS: Quite a change in the weather overnight as our advertised cold front moved across Alabama almost exactly on time. There was quite a drop in temperature and even after daybreak this morning the temperature continued to fall. For example, after a high of 71 yesterday at Birmingham, by daybreak it was down to 52 and by early this afternoon all the way down to 47. We will barely get above 50 for the remainder of this afternoon.

THE NON-RAIN EVENT: We did not get enough rain out of this frontal passage to hardly swell the total for the year, only a trace at Birmingham Airport. Some of the higher amounts were around 1/10 of an inch. Our next rain will be at some point this coming weekend with probably a better chance on Saturday. However, for the second model run in a row, most of it is being advertised down over South Alabama and NW Florida. A low-pressure area is expected to develop over the NW Gulf of Mexico by late in the week. It is expected to be centered south of the mouth of the Mississippi Saturday morning and south of the Mississippi coast by Saturday night. The GFS model positions the center of the low about 250 miles south of Mobile late Saturday and then curving NE. If it follows orders, that will keep most of the rain south of the Birmingham area.

THE OLE THERMOMETER: Looks like some scattered frost for the next two early mornings, more so on Thursday morning. We expect lows around 37, but lower in the NE Alabama valleys. Do not be surprised to see some 33 to 35 lows. It will be cool again tomorrow with a high of 58,
but turning milder Thursday and Friday with highs in the mid 60s.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: Lots of interesting weather and I am thankful for rapid-fire communications that bring us reports instantly from
around the world. As recent as the early 1980s, it sometimes took 15 minutes to get reports from far-flung stations. I can sit at my desk now and get a report from Barrow, Alaska in less than 2 seconds. Speaking of Barrow, the sunrise there tomorrow is at 12:44 p.m. only to set less than one hour later at 1:41 p.m. They are losing 27 minutes of sunlight a day as they head into that long stretch of 24 hours of darkness…the Birmingham rain excess for 2009 is 17.26 inches…only 13 days until hurricane season officially ends. It has been a relatively quiet year over the Atlantic Basin, which includes our friend, the Gulf of Mexico…a huge storm in the Pacific Northwest the last two days. Gusts to 105 on the summit of Mt. Ranier with a temperature of 9 above. Crystal Mountain, Oregon had gusts to 115 mph…coldest temperatures this morning included an even zero at Greeley, Colorado. That town is out of the mountains at the edge of the Plains, but has a good snow cover…45 below zero was the coldest in Alaska at Huslia…it will be interesting to watch the Alaskan winter. I will keep a close watch on the small community of Chicken, Alaska, just for the fun of it.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A sad note from Jo Mitchell in Cook Springs. She and her husband, Marty, had to put down their beloved cocker spaniel, Clipper, Sunday afternoon because of a cancer that had spread to his lungs and head causing him to go blind. He was about 12 years old and they loved him dearly. They adopted him for the animal shelter in Pell City in 2002. I keep believing that rescue dogs may possibly make the best pets. Could it be because they deeply appreciate the sudden change in their lifestyle? I always get permission before posting these type stories and I feel like it makes all of us pet owners appreciate our pets even more…Little Miss Molly slept with me on the king-size bed last night. I automatically wake up at 5:00 and did not turn off the alarm. The alarm woke her up. Out she came, instantly rang the little bell and we were out walking well before daylight. I will never have the opportunity to get lazy with that little girl around. Life goes on.

...Noticeably Cooler Today...

A COOL CHANGE: Our string of mild days with highs in the 70s has come to end, thanks to a cold front that is passing through the state this morning. A few patches of light rain will accompany the front, but moisture is very limited and rainfall amounts will be light and spotty. Many places won't get enough rain to measure; barely enough to wet the pavement. The light rain should move out of the state by early afternoon, and some sunshine could very well appear this afternoon.

The big change involves the temperature. We should hover in the 50s all day, meaning highs today will be around 15 degrees cooler than recent days. Most places will fail to reach the 60 degree mark today.

THE REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow will be a dry and cool day with a mix of sun and clouds and a high around 60. We will warm into the upper 60s on Thursday with a good supply of sunshine. The weather will stay dry during the day Friday, although clouds will likely be on the increase by Friday afternoon.

WEEKEND FORECAST: A low pressure center is forecast to develop in the Northwest Gulf of Mexico Friday afternoon, and rain will likely overspread the state Friday night as this feature moves northeast. We will have to carry a chance of rain into Saturday morning as the surface low moves through South Alabama. Then, the rain should end from west to east Saturday afternoon. For now it looks like the heaviest rain from this system will be over the southern third of the state, with amounts up this way in the 1/2 inch category. But, sometimes computer models don't handle weather systems very well in the southern branch of the jet stream in an El Nino pattern, so we will be watching for signs this disturbance might be stronger than forecast. Saturday will be a cool day with morning rain and temperatures in the 50s all day. Sunday will be brighter and warmer with a sunny sky and a high in the 60s.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: Many say this is the busiest travel week of the year, so weather is a big deal. At this point it does like a significant storm system will impact Alabama with a good round of rain and storms on Tuesday; the weather then looks dry with seasonal temperatures (60s during the day, 40s at night) on Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day.

EXTREMES: The warmest place in the nation yesterday was Miami, Florida with 84; coldest was Huslia, Alaska with 44 degrees below zero. Coldest in the continental U.S. was Greeley, Colorado and Laramie, Wyoming with -6.

NOVEMBER SNOW: An intense, cold core upper low is spinning away over the nation's mid-section. Dynamic cooling underneath the cold core resulted in snow for parts of Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri yesterday. Wichita, Kansas saw their first snow flakes of the season yesterday with a high of only 38 degrees.

...A Cool Front Approaching...

NOT MUCH RAIN: Most of our weather comes from the west, southwest or south. So, we spend a lot of time turning our eyes westward to see what is coming at us. This afternoon we find a moderate cool front crossing Arkansas and Louisiana. We also see a band of showers across West Tennessee and Mississippi headed east. That is where the simplicity ends. This is not a distinct clear-cut forecast. The temperature forecast is not too bad. We expect that front to ease through Central Alabama at some point tonight dropping temperatures to around 48 when you have your first cup of coffee tomorrow morning. It may not get out of the upper 50s during the day Tuesday. That band of showers to our west has been decreasing as it moves east today. We do not expect much rain. One of our favorite weather models, the NAM (that stands for North American Model), spits out only 0.01 rain from this event. The morning run of the GFS (Global Forecast System), which we probably use more than any other, shows only 0.28. So this is definitely not going to be a big rain event, especially when compared to Tropical Storm Ida. Some of those showers could linger tomorrow morning, but we are now calling for dry weather Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with lows at night from 38 to 34 and daily highs in the 60s. Our next chance of rain beyond that would be at some point over the weekend with probably the better chance on Saturday.

METEOR SHOWER: It is called the Leonid Meteor Shower and it peaks on Tuesday with a new moon providing viewing conditions dark enough to not compete. Scientists expect a relatively mild display of 20 to 30 meteors per hour over North America. There will be a whole lot more over Asia. Your best bet will be before sunrise tomorrow morning.

STORM ALERT XTREME: From all accounts, the event yesterday at the BJCC was the best one ever with the largest attendance.

PROWLING THROUGH NORTH AMERICA: 6 to 8 inches of new snow over parts of Kansas and Nebraska…at Dawson, Nebraska today, the snow was accumulating at nearly 2 inches per hour with one-half foot already on the ground…Freeze Warnings are posted tonight for a number of counties in Central Texas and Central Oklahoma…It may drop as low as 22 over NW Oklahoma…here in Alabama, the Alabama River is still in flood around Claiborne and Millers Ferry…the river level was about 5 feet above flood stage, but that warning will end probably by tomorrow…cold spots this morning 7 below zero in Yellowstone National Park and 38 below at Hulsa, Alaska…warmest Sunday was 89 at McAllen and Laredo, both in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Here we go again. A new great granddaughter born into our family this morning. Her name is Kaleigh Elizabeth. That makes a total of 6 grandchildren and now we have 3 great grandchildren. Maybe I should feel older than Red Mountain. No, I will never feel old. Little Miss Molly has reversed my aging and I feel younger every year. She became impatient with me yesterday because of no ballgames, around nightfall she took matters into her own paws and went on a vicious energy explosion. She was racing through the house so fast that you could hear her toenails digging into the carpet, which is tantamount to tires squealing on a speeding car. She was pouncing off the recliner, the sofa and another chair. Every few seconds she would stop and glare at me as if to say--I do not need you. Life goes on.

...Rain Back In The Forecast...

Rain is returning to the forecast for Central Alabama in the near term as a big upper low over the Central part of the country edges southeastward and weakens. An approaching cool front will increase clouds this afternoon and set off a few showers overnight tonight into Tuesday morning. Rainfall rates will be light, less than a quarter of an inch. Highs this afternoon will be in the lower 70s. Temperatures tonight will back into the lower 50s.

REST OF THE WEEK: The front will edge into Georgia on Tuesday, taking most of the showers with it. Sunshine should return, but temperatures will be cooler, with highs in the lower 60s. As the upper low rotates into Missouri, drier air will give us partly cloudy conditions on Wednesday. Highs will again be in the 60s after an overnight low in the 40s. It looks like high pressure will remain in control of our weather on Thursday, with a mix of clouds and sun.

HEADING TOWARD THE WEEKEND: By Thursday night, another upper level trough will be swinging eastward toward Alabama. Moisture will be meager across the state, however, and the prospects for rain appear to be low at this time. The best chances appear to be for Friday afternoon and night, and should be gone by Saturday. Even on Friday, rain chances should be less than 1 in 3. Saturday and Sunday look dry, with highs in the upper 60s. Weekend lows will be in the 40s.

HOLIDAY WEEK SNEAK PEEK: It looks like a strong storm system will affect the Mississippi Valley and Deep South on Monday the 23rd. We could see strong storms and heavy rain. The bad weather will move to the East Coast on Wednesday. We look cool and cloudy for Thanksgiving and into weekend.

A HISTORIC NOR'EASTER: The low pressure system that was leftover from Ida energized a powerful East Coast nor'easter that brought record storm surge flooding to places like Norfolk, VA. The storm surge at Sewells Point in Norfolk was 5.96 feet, higher than the previous record from Hurricane Isabel. Heavy rains of 6-11 inches fell over eastern North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. Winds gusted to 74 mph at the Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, Mike Smith, CEO Of WeatherData Services will discuss the role of private weather firms, the success of the warning system and how his company has evolved over the years. Future guests include Cleveland weatherman Dave Goddard, Stormchaser Roger Hill, famed broadcaster Roger Hill and a look at ice storm preparedness. Follow our tweets about the show: we are @weatherbrains at Twitter.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: An early morning tornado killed 8 people at Riegelwood in Columbus County, North Carolina. The twister struck at 6:38 a.m. A tornado watch and tornado warning were in effect when the storm struck. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 6:21 a.m. and upgraded to a tornado warning at 6:29 a.m. The tornado was an F3. The tornado was the third deadliest North Carolina tornado since 1950. It was also the 72nd violent F3 or greater tornado since 1950 in the Tar Heel State.

===================================================================

It just doesn't get much better than this in November in Alabama, at least weather wise. We have a case of severe clear over the state, with not a cloud in sight. There are some fair weather cumulus clouds over in Mississippi, were dewpoints are in the 50s, but our airmass is still dry. Dewpoints are in the 40s across much of the state with air temperatures in the 70s. The nearest precipitation to Alabama is some light showers over eastern Texas and some heavier ones over Oklahoma and Missouri ahead of a powerhouse upper trough moving into the Plains states. Snow was falling over southeastern Colorado and western Kansas, where 6-8 inches is expected to fall overnight. The trough is expected to cut off into a big upper low, bringing more snow to northern Kansas on Monday.

THIS SYSTEM IS OUR NEXT WEATHERMAKER AS WELL: The same system bringing snow to the Plains states will have some influence on Alabama's weather early in the week. It remains to be seen whether the low will remain further west, or progress east and southeast on Monday. The morning run of the GFS did have it moving a little closer to us, increasing our rain chances for Monday night and Tuesday. The last three runs of the GFS have been more progressive with the system, so they may be on to something. We will look at tonight's data before significantly changing the forecast. Just keep it in the back of your mind.

REST OF THE WEEK: Model madness continues for the remainder of the week with a lot of uncertainty. The GFS has been trending drier for the end of the week, so the shower chances we have in te forecast for Friday and Saturday may have to be lowered at least. It will continue mild of the remainder of the week.

HOLIDAY SNEAK PREVIEW: The Holiday week should start off with rain and thunderstorms Monday into Tuesday. Tere are some indications another system will affect us Wednesday or Thursday, but if the fickle GFS is to be believed, Thanksgiving Day would be fair and colder with good weather for Friday's Iron Bowl.

WEATHERBRAINS: Don't miss last week's show with Tim Marshall. It was a great discussion about severe weather and wind damage. This week, it's what is right with the warning system wit Weather Data CEO Mike Smith. We will record the new show Monday night. Listen to the show at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: An outbreak of tornadoes across the Deep South was the result of an unusually intense low pressure system near Memphis, Tennessee. An early morning tornado near Hattiesburg, MS was rated as an F3. Several tornadoes were reported across South Central and Southeast Alabama, including one at Pintlala, Alabama, south of Montgomery. This same storm apparently caused damage near Taylor Road in East Montgomery. Brundidge, Alabama was also hard hit. A water tower collapsed there and a fire station was flattened.

...Nice Sunday Ahead...

The weather doesn't get much nicer than this in mid-November in Alabama. Highs today will be in the middle 70s, some ten degrees above normal. Expect plenty of sunshine with just some high clouds streaming across the area during the day.

NEW WORK WEEK: The models are starting to develop a little consistency about the forecast for the upcoming week. There has been good consistency in the concept that a big upper low would develop over the Southwest U.S. and move out into the Plains states early in the week. But these bowling ball upper lows are notoriously hard to predict, so there is quite a bit of uncertainty in the forecast, primarily with how far east the system will move and how fast.

It now appears that Monday will be dry and mild. Tuesday will feature increasing clouds and a slight chance of showers over western sections as the low edges a little further eastward. More showers will be possible, mainly over western sections on Wednesday. But high pressure over the Appalachians will start to flex its muscles by Thursday in the form of a southeasterly flow over the state, and the shower activity will be pushed away temporarily. By Friday, the southeasterly flow will moisten the atmosphere and showers and storms will come back into the forecast. The tug of war will continue, with another trough producing more showers on Friday.

NEXT WEEKEND: A stronger disturbance to our west on Saturday will pull a warm front northward on Saturday, accompanied by showers and storms. Sunday will be windy with increasing shower and storm chances. I would not be surprised to see us have to deal with some severe weather possibilities in the Sunday/Monday time frame.

HOLIDAY WEEK/IRON BOWL: The moisture will not depart behind the Sunday/Monday storm system. This will set the stage for a bigger storm system to affect Alabama, perhaps on Thanksgiving Day. There are signs this front could stall and cause additional showers and storms on Friday. This is not good news for the Alabama/Auburn game. But I caution that this forecast is not a high confidence one, and there will almost certainly bee changces.

LEONIDS: The Leonids meteor shower will peak Monday night/early Tuesday morning across Alabama. Experts say that if cloud conditions permit, one might see 20-30 meteors per hour from vantage points in the U.S. Hopefully, the clouds will cooperate.

WEATHERBRAINS: It's the podcast that's all about weather. Spend an entertaining hour each week with some of the big hitters in weather. This week, it is WeatherData CEO Mike Smith, who has a new book called Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather. Follow WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains.

IN 1989: Things were quite a bit different. There was no Doppler radar in Alabama yet. An F4 tornado that struck Huntsville on this date was not preceded by a tornado warning. Conflicting storm spotter reports led to a delay in issuing a tornado warning. NWS communication problems didn't help either. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.
